Here are the best restaurants, cafes, and bars to eat and drink in East Lansing near Michigan State University | Eater Detroit

"Foster Coffee Co. embraces strengthening the community through coffee. Most vendors at this establishment come from Michigan, so you know where your dollars are going. This two-story establishment decorated with an industrial feel is a great space for students to do work while enjoying Foster’s popular drinks like lattes sweetened with caramel or honey, and specialty drinks like the strawberry matcha or espresso mule." - Julianne Noye

I’ve been a long standing supporter of Foster for a number of reasons. The staff is always kind and goes above and beyond. The menu rotates seasonally, fits the feel of the season, and always tastes amazing. And the people that come into Foster are people who I generally want to associate with. Visit Foster if you want a coffee shop that holds a place in your heart. I love it, recommend it, and can’t wait for the day that they unveil an organic option ;)

Stopped in for a latte on a rainy day during Art Festival. I had their honey lavender latte. It was very good and tasted as I expected. It was nice that there were tables both below and above. Worth trying.

This is now my go-to coffee shop in East Lansing. My kids love the lavender lattes while I have enjoyed working my way through the menu and specialty drinks. I love anything Michigan cherry 🍒 and the iced cherry mocha was divine. For breakfast we have tried the oatmeal and a variety of avocado toasts. The avocado toast comes in a big plastic to-go container—I keep forgetting to ask for an alternative. The staff is friendly and willing to answer questions allowing me to pick out the perfect coffee for my mood. There are plenty of seating options from a couch, window seating, and a cozy upstairs area.

Food: 5/5 (great tea and sweets!) Service: 5/5 (great and hardworking staff 💪) Atmosphere: 5/5 (Foster was the place to be!) Foster Coffee Company is a great place to get beverages, meet friends, study, etc. Located in Lansing, Michigan, this place is awesome! As this was my first time, I really enjoyed all Foster Coffee Company had to offer. The food is great! The apple bread and turmeric/ginger tea was a hit! I had my tea iced, and I enjoyed every sip. The punkin latte was amazing as well. The service was nice! There were really great staff who smiled! A smile goes so far. I enjoyed seeing how hardworking the staff worked and how well they explained the menu. So awesome! The atmosphere was lit! 🔥 You would have thought this was a club for college students to study! It was a beautiful atmosphere, and it felt good holding conversations in this coffee house. I loved, loved, loved the vibe! Foster Coffee Company has some great items! Without a doubt, I had a great experience there. Also, knowing the syrups and everything were made by them, I felt great spending money on great products.

Google
Foster is great coffee shop in downtown East Lansing with a great selection of specialty drinks and breakfast/lunch food. There are two floors of seating and the atmosphere is always calm - good spot to relax with some coffee. The iced miel (honey and cinnamon) latte is my go-to. This is my preferred stop on the way to the East Lansing Farmer's Market in Valley Court Park.

Google
Great iced lattes! Tried this place out at our church today! Thank you for coming out on Mother's Day! The Carmel latte was amazing! I will definitely be coming into the store to get a latte soon! It made my Mother's Day extra special!

Google
WOW what a great latte! Ordered the vanilla mint with oat milk after the barista working suggested it and am very impressed! Love the atmosphere and the aesthetic, what a spacious shop with a loving vibe. I would come here to study or for just a quick drink. The merch was adorable and I will rave about this drink for weeks..:

Google
We hired Foster Coffee for our graduation party for our daughter. They did an amazing job and were truly a highlight of our event. Staff was super friendly and made amazing drinks! We highly highly recommend Jon and his amazing staff.

Yelp
I've loved this coffee shop since I first arrived in EL, the welcoming, friendly staff, and delicious coffee has me coming back consistently. I recommend this spot to anybody who wants a tasty, friendly staff, and a good environment!

Yelp
I was looking for a local good coffee and this popped up on Yelp. Have to say it did not disappoint. Oatmilk cappuccino was delicious. The place is clearly a great place to hangout and work for students as well. Great coffee, highly recommend.

Yelp
Beautiful coffee shop in the heart of East Lansing and right next to Michigan State. I really enjoyed chatting with their staff and the coffee was delicious. I usually get a vanilla latte with oat milk and theirs was really good. My son had a cup of drip coffee and really enjoyed his as well. Founders has plenty of table space inside and out for meetings and getting work done.

Yelp
One of the best coffee shops in East Lansing. It is located in a great spot downtown and is such a nice spot to check out especially in the summer. My go-to has always been an Americano but their Barista Picks are worth checking out every week. The baristas are super cool and bring a lot to their vision of foster community in their coffee shop. My barista Bryan just started but is super nice and serves with a smile and a great conversation. Definitely a place worth checking out this summer. Great place to catch up with a buddy as well as a great place to cram on homework or read a book

Yelp
My daughter and I road tripped up here from MO for basketball camp at MSU - while she was there during the day, I ventured over to this coffee shop to read, do some computer work, and chill. The staff was so great, and the guy that took my order on day one actually remembered my name when I came back the next day! Even though the space can appear a little modern and open/airy it really feels comfy and quaint once you're here. Highly recommend the avo toast, oatmeal and the brown sugar cinnamon latte (hot) with oatmilk. Chef's kiss.

Yelp
The coffee was good. I had regular drip coffee hot and my teen had a St Elizabeth's iced. The young lady was nice and guided my teen towards her drink....sort of. Cute space for sure with Merch.

Yelp
I graduated from MSU many moons ago and every time I drive through or visit East Lansing, I'm always blown away by how different it is these days. Discovering Foster Coffee Company was so cool as I think it's a great addition to the city and a great spot for locals and students alike. There are definitely hipster, Instagrammable vibes happening here. According to their website, they started with their Owosso location and utilized Madcap partnered with Grand Rapids' MadCap for training, beans, and other resources as they got started. They made an impression on me so I think they're doing something right. The employee at the counter was friendly and tried to answer my questions about their iced lattes. I got an oat vanilla iced latte as they note that they make all their syrups in house. Nate had a work call that he had to hop on and their wifi was strong. The seating options are actually comfortable, which is nice because often I find that the modern and trendy seats can be pretty uncomfortable. The couch looked nice! I also liked the upper mezzanine seating overlooking the space. There is a lot of great natural light on the main floor but less in the upper level, so you can choose if you'd like a brighter workspace or a cozier, darker area. It wasn't super busy when we were there, but I could see how sound could travel if it was more crowded. They have a limited food menu with toasts, etc. that looked pretty tasty for a light bite. I'm glad we had time to check out Foster Coffee Company and would stop by again next time we're in the area. I loved their branded merchandise, but a $50 sweatshirt was a bit steep for me.

Yelp
Great food and service! I came in on May 9 while in town for a graduation. Ordered an oat milk latte and an avocado toast. The coffee was smooth, with pretty good latte art considering oat milk can be so hard to work with. The standout was the toast though! Highly recommend. Just one thing that could've been better: do wish that they had offered me a plate instead of a to-go container. I felt wasteful sitting in the cafe and eating out of the disposable plastic. I'd definitely return if I happen to be in East Lansing again!

Heather M.

Yelp
Really lovely place to go for a great cup of coffee and a quick breakfast on the go or sit down. Highly recommend getting the St. Elizabeth while it's in season. Quick service as well, and a nice outdoor seating area.

Brent W.

Yelp
Good service, good coffee; nice sit down amenities. Coffee was well priced and a large menu of drinks. Breakfast foods (bagel & avocado toast) were okay.

Larry E.

Yelp
I have loved coming here for years. However, lately it has been mildly disappointing overall. While the coffee is usually pretty good, the baristas have been unusually slow at times and not very interested or interactive with the customer, even when it is slow at the time. It's a place I have always really liked coming to because of the atmosphere. Sadly that seems to be changing. Hopefully it is just a temporary situation.

Yelp
Excellent coffee -- though I would not recommend the food or baked goods. We tried the coffee cake muffin and looked amazing and was pretty dry and tasted like too much baking soda. Also tried the avocado toast and it was fine, but tasted like mashed avo with tomatoes on top. No salt or seasoning. BUT the coffee is very good and on a nice rainy day it is so pleasant to sit and enjoy their giant windows and natural light. I also loved the music they played and the aesthetic.

Yelp
The excitment when you search for a local coffee shop while in Lansing and what do I see? FOSTER COFFEE!! Their Owosso (largest) and Flint locations serve amazing coffee, incredible service and that local coffee shop feel. East Lansing? The same experience you expect from any Foster Coffee location. I did deduct one star as parking is a bit tricky, but doable. There is a parking garage "around the corner" for those traveling by car. Well worth that walk !

Yelp
Fun coffee spot in the heart of East Lansing. You'll find a ton of students studying here which makes the experience very loud if you're looking to concentrate. I recommend using this coffee shop for socializing and group work if you don't mind a loud atmosphere. The coffee and lattes are delicious and beautiful made (see attached picture) however, I wasn't a big fan of their matcha. It was grainy/gritty and not my favorite; I'm a avid matcha drinker. Prices are a bit high for a college town coffee shop but that's to be expected with how places like this are today. I love the loft area upstairs, adds as fun flair to the location

Yelp
The location and the interior was nice. The staff was friendly and attentive. But the product... I ordered a simple black coffee. It tasted sour. I really wanted some coffee in the morning so I decided to bear with it and even got a refill. I had them add cream to my refill, but that didn't help mask the sourness. 3 stars for the experience and I'm going to assume it was just a bad batch that day.

Jeremy H.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, great customer service. I don't know what they are doing with their water, double reverse something with extra mineral added.... I don't have to understand it to know that it makes a difference. Best option in the area!

Yelp
Grabbed an iced coffee at Fosters today while perusing the East Lansing Art Festival and enjoyed it. I was hoping for a cold brew but since they didn't offer cold brew, the iced coffee was the next best thing. It looks like this is a great spot for college students as there are a few booths with outlets under them for charging electronics, as well as a number of tables and chairs. The prices here are more than reasonable and the baristas were friendly and polite. Nice to have another coffee option in the heart of East Lansing.
google avatar

El Raul S.

Yelp
Try the Miel Latte. Enough honey and cinnamon to taste the flavor without over peeing the coffee taste. Tasty!
google avatar

Trevor F.

Yelp
A good spot to drink some coffee and chill! The staff are friendly and the space is very hip. Price was reasonable too.

Yelp
Perfect study spot with cool vibes, great coffee, and even nicer people. The service here is amazing, very personable and friendly everytime. I love the menu options they have and how it switches up frequently. I love the presentation of drinks especially the hot teas and the cute bottles they come in. The atmosphere here is perfect for studying because it is so new, clean, and aesthetically pleasing. This location is almost as good as the Owasso location but not quite. My only major con (sad) is that it does get super crowded and it is almost impossible to find a table unless you go on a weekday morning. So if you are looking to study make sure you get there early to fight for table, you won't be disappointed.

Charlotte P.

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee in east Lansing hands down. They have an amazing set up inside with many places to study/chill. There's also an upstairs area that's a little more private and quiet and I really love doing my work up there. The general vibe is amazing! Every barista is so friendly and the drinks are always good- the consistency here is on point. I don't recommend going during peak times if you're looking for a super quick coffee run, but even so, it's worth the wait. I love trying out the seasonal menu and you cannot go wrong with any of their lattes or smoothies. Check it out! It's the best.

Xochi B.

Yelp
Best staff, spacious and friendly environment, best pour-over options, amazing espresso, consistent drinks, and great seasonal menu. All around amazing shop!

Yelp
Foster Coffee Company is a very open and lighthearted space. The people who work there really seem to revel in the experience of making coffee, and they produce wonderful product. My favorite thing to order is a simple iced vanilla latte!
google avatar

Veronica Z.

Yelp
Loved everything about it. Good music. Great coffee. Friendly staff. Can be a little hard to find parking tho.

Yelp
I wanted to like foster, but unfortunately I've tried it multiple times and every time my coffee comes out tasting sour! I am a daily coffee drinker and used to be a barista myself and have never had espresso that has tasted sour before trying Foster's. I've gotten a few drinks from here and none have hit the mark for me when compared to other options on MSU's campus. I researched the issue and sour tasting espresso could be due to a few brewing mistakes, so hopefully foster's is able to turn around the problem in the future. I do like the ambience, location, menu, and seating options at foster, however I wish the quality of the espresso shots improve for the future.

Niky K.

Yelp
Visited here a few times now they have it down pretty well. They seem busier than they really are though?? There was 3 people ahead of me and maybe 1-2 waiting and it took 8-9 mins to get my drink. I definitely had more than enough time to wait so I was in no rush however the baristas here are super chatty. Friendly for sure but seem to not be so concerned about speed? Again not sure I have only been a few times but this seems to be my experience so far. I wouldn't come here in a rush I dont think

Yelp
Stopped in for the first time this past weekend right at 9am as the store opened. The staff was incredibly friendly and so kind. I was presented with the menu right away and their covid procedures are top notch! I felt really safe in there. My latte was perfect and the ambiance is so minimalistic and chic.

charlene s.

Yelp
The coffee and tea is OK but a coffee shop that doesn't open until 8am is completely useless.
google avatar

Brittany M.

Yelp
Beautiful store and pleasant workers. The upstairs space is very cool. The brown sugar latte was amazing!
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Loved this addition to East Lansing! It was great coffee and every employee was so friendly. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Nice minimalist environment. Decent place to get work done, but limited access to outlets as you need to get one of the few tables along the edge of the place. Additionally, I didn't think the coffee was that great. So, overall fine, but not a must stop.

Jeremy E.

Yelp
Nice place, nice people. Only complaint is that their espresso is a little weak (but still tasty) and they served it in a paper cup. I can get paper cups at Starbucks.
google avatar

Molly V.

Yelp
They lost my order but after I confronted them, they refunded me in full and gave me my drink. Stuff like that happens and it was annoying but the staff was really nice and made it up. Neat place. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Great place for any occasion! I had great service and the vibe in this coffee shop is amazing. I'd definitely recommend a pour over or a latte for your first trip. The upstairs has a darker and lounge feel, great for studying and conversations. Downstairs has a great view of Albert and is a great socializing area. The decor is very urban and simplistic with is a great conversation piece for any date.

Jen H.

Yelp
Over extracted espresso. Friendly service but my latte tasted burnt. For the price, I was very disappointed. Threw out most of it. Yuck.
google avatar

Lindsay R.

Yelp
Went here one of the first weeks it was open and I loved it! The atmosphere was amazing, the decor was adorable, the employees were so friendly, and my drink was delicious. 100% would recommend to others and will be returning!

Mollie M.

Yelp
Stopped by here to have a latte and work on finals and really enjoyed it! Got a caramel latte with oat milk (recommendation from the barista as I'm lactose intolerant and they don't have soy milk) and it was great! Cute latte art in a nice mug. I will say it did take a little bit to get the drink (maybe 6-7 minutes) but when you're getting handcrafted drinks in a non-corporate coffee shop that's expected. Overall great atmosphere and a nice latte, I will say more tables would be great.
google avatar

Collin T.

Yelp
great service and great coffee!! there are so many quick service coffee shops around and foster is worth the price. that being said, it is your classic kind of gentrify-y coffee prices, but the quality seems worth it to me!!
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere and great coffee. You can really tell there is a lot of thought as love put into their high quality products. Keep it up!
google avatar

Hieu L.

Yelp
Great location and atmosphere, coffee is also really good. They make it in front of you!

Lucy B.

Yelp
one time i was at foster and i was drinking a cortado and then i remembered that i had to go to a virtual birthday party and i really didn't want to go but i went anyway. i guess it's a good place to go to a virtual birthday but i still can't get past the dark energy that lingers in this coffee shop. idk i can't even explain it.
google avatar

Becca A.

Yelp
By far my favorite coffee shop in East Lansing! I only wish they would've opened earlier in my career as an MSU student! The staff is always super enthusiastic and kind. The coffee is fantastic and they always play great music to study/work to. The whole atmosphere is great. I highly recommend this place (and the iced vanilla latte with oat milk, and the avocado toast)
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Best coffee in Lansing. Awesome building, great baristas, pretty much everything about Foster Coffee Co is A+. Couldn't be happier it's now in Lansing!
google avatar

Tori Y.

Yelp
Best place in East Lansing to get a drink. Really chill vibe, perfect for studying or getting some work done. Definitely set up to be a cozy spot in fall/winter when you want to hide from the snow. I would recommend trying all the seasonal drinks you can. The workers spend a lot of time curating special drinks to serve you each season.

Camille M.

Yelp
The best coffee shop in East Lansing. Whether you want to spend a day doing productive work, or have a good spot to grab coffee with a friend, this place is perfect. Amazing staff and great music. The only coffee shop I'll go to in the East Lansing area. And of course, all their coffee is FANTASTIC -- highly recommend getting any of their pour overs.

Dustin B.

Yelp
Visited here a couple time and it is a great addition to downtown-good coffee, delicious food, super convenient location next to shopping and campus

Ellie B.

Yelp
Foster has the absolute best coffee I've ever had. I am a loyal customer at their first location in Owosso, where I learned to love the company and their delicious coffee. I was overjoyed when they announced the opening of the East Lansing location because I am an MSU student. Fosters is the place to go if you want an amazing atmosphere and even more amazing coffee.

Leah K.

Yelp
The chai-der is the BEST drink I think I have ever had, a mix of chai tea and hot cider, I never would have thought these two could mix so well! About average price for a coffee shop, great environment and service. I have all my friends hooked on the chai-der, praying it's not a seasonal drink
