The Best Soft Serve Ice Cream in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Sometimes, old-school spots can be cloaked in an air of nostalgia that obfuscates sub-par flavors and experiences — luckily, that’s not the case at Fosters Freeze. First opened in 1946 in Inglewood, this chain still offers some of the best soft serve in town that tastes like a hot day sitting on the bleachers at a local park, or an after-school snack. Though options abound in different forms, the classic vanilla or chocolate cone is still the way to go." - Mona Holmes

Ice cream shop with burgers huh? I was going to get a burger but I got fish and chips. The lady at the counter was friendly, the service was fast. The portion was pretty small an appetizer size rather than a complete meal. Fries and fish were perfectly crispy. Tasted mediocre and not memorable. Ranch sauce they use is very sour and just doesn't taste good. Tartar was bland. Overall I didn't enjoy the flavor just fulfilled my stomach. I am assuming the burger situation is similar. The seatings are located right next to the busy road. There is no music playing or anything. So the ambience is no good here.

Best custard I've had since living on the East Coast. My go-to place! They also make a tasty grilled cheese and so many other great treats. Very reasonable prices!

An old-school, iconic drive-thru just like the good old days. We absolutely love their soft serve ice cream — especially the half-chocolate, half-vanilla swirl. But the real must-try? The chocolate-dipped cone. The staff is always friendly and super helpful. A true gem!

This will be the second time I've been to Foster's Freeze. We love the nostalgic feeling of this place. They have outdoor seating in front which is very great to use because eating a Chocolate Dipped cone is not advisable when driving or in your car! I never had one so I learned my lesson after the first time around. The ice cream underneath will melt and come out of the bottom from all around the cone. By the way, their cake cones and waffle cone are top notch delicious. They will survive a medium. That's another thing. In my pictures are medium sized cones! What the heck is a large?! I couldn't imagine! Great pricing to portion sizes and affordable for a family of six kids! We love Foster's Freeze!

Google
Fosters freeze is Rad! Love this retro vibe ice cream and burger joint. The ice-cream is my fav! Especially the banana split. My comfort food! To celebrate a banana split. If i'm sad a banana split and just because a banana split. There's only a few fosters left and I hope they keep going! Its like a blast from the past!

Came by to try it out after hearing about its “classic” status. Ice cream products are tasty. Burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, etc. are simply way too expensive for the quality. Sadly, I don’t see myself coming back considering the various other options that provide the same product for better prices.

Google
The chocolate-vanilla swirl was exactly what I needed. Also, the person taking my order was so nice (wish I would’ve asked his name). Really helped cheer me up after a bad day. You never know the impact you’ll have on someone, so I’m glad this one was so positive!

Google
I'll make this quick and simple as we all have no time for an autobiographical review 🤘 Parking at the back ✅ Drive thru ✅ Walk thru ✅ No dine in ❌ - there was never one even before covid as this just a small burger joint. Outdoor seating ✅ There's a tip jar outside their window. Pls tip. Don't be a savage 🤣 Amazing food! They can be busy but it's worth the wait! ✅ Enjoy! 😎

Yelp
I only come here for the Twister with my partner Never disappoints!! It's a small establishment but there's always parking when I come. Sometimes there's a line and sometimes there isn't but the service is always quick since we only order ice cream. The staff are friendly. There are a few tables if you want to sit and eat but I usually just take my order to go. Recommend going for a nice sweet treat!

Yelp
I used to love this place. Yesterday the thought of stopping by here crossed my mind but then I remembered the last 3 or 4 times I've been there (over the last year) how awful it is interacting with the people who run it. I mean, seriously, they treat you like they're doing you a favor by even acknowledging your existence. So arrogant. Terrible service. I didn't want to burdent them with my presnence so I went somewhere else.

Yelp
So we are watching tv and remembered we saw a television commercial Foster Freeze BOGO free sundae February 12-26th. We arrive and the kid behind the counter taking the order said "You are kidding me right." We showed him the Facebook posting. He said sorry but no one told me anything about this. I told him so does this mean you are not going to offer the sundae. He said No sorry! Well no more Foster Freeze for us! Welcome BR. See you soon.

Yelp
Got myself a oreo strawberry twister. 2nd time I've had it and it was delicious. Service was quick and staff were nice.

Yelp
This place fell off soooo bad. It used to be the best. The prices are too high and every time we come here there is no consistency at all when it comes to preparing our order. It's not even worth it anymore. I've been coming here for like 30+ years, a super regular. Not anymore. Sucks.

Yelp
This was one of the worst burgers I've had in LA, the one in the picture was somehow dry and soggy at the same time? The other unpictured burger had lettuce on it, and it was very wet and fell apart quickly. The service was also interesting, the staff was very kind but extremely slow. At $15 a meal should be more edible than this. The outdoor tables were clean and the store was well maintained.

Yelp
We have never visited the location. The hamburgers were very delicious. Mario, the cook seems so proud of what he does, and it shows because these hamburgers were top notch. The twirl ice creams were delicious. What a memorable meal thanks to Mario! He's very polite, fast, and professional. The mature lady was not in the best disposition, she seems to be either the owner, or the manager. THANK YOU MARIO!

Yelp
I've been here a couple times for ice cream now--never for food--and the service has always been great. We have never known what we've wanted to order, but every staff member we've interacted with has been patient and kind. The ice cream comes out remarkably fast and is always VERY good! As a Burbank local, I can appreciate the vintage aesthetic about the building, but I do think it could use some sprucing up. They get QUITE busy when it's warm and only has a few tables, so I think seating could be improved as well. Pricing is not that far off from other fast food places I've been to, honestly. We just went to that chain in the mall last week and the pricing was about the same for ice cream treats. The place that does mix-ins by the movie theater is crazy expensive! I always prefer to support a small business in my community over a chain anyway. Everything we have gotten has been high enough quality to warrant the price we have paid, which I think is all that matters to me.

Yelp
Absolutely the best . The chicken sandwich is crispy and toppings fresh and perfect. The burger is Huge and flavor is on point. The freezes are thick, and the toppings are soooo good. I tried the Oreo freeze, addicting. Their mudslide freeze is my favorite, coffee, fudge, Oreo --- it's perfect. Also so many flavors I haven't tried yet but I just love this place. The vibe is so cute in Burbank. Very pleased

Yelp
Nope, never again! I just paid $7 for chili cheese fries that had store-bought fries and some disgusting tasting chili on top. I asked the woman for onions, but couldn't even get that. I should've drove down the street to Del taco and purchased their deluxe chili fries for half the cost with better quality

Monet

Yelp
This place is usually my favorite but after today I will no longer be coming back. I asked for a parfait with a custom topping which she repeated to me I had to pay $2.50 for and I paid because I obviously wanted to add an extra topping. I received the ice cream with the wrong topping and RESPECTFULLY asked her if she could please remake it because the topping she put ( I asked for Reese's cups she gave me Oreos which make me sick !!) and she continued to be extremely rude saying no you never said that and tried calling my bluff saying she had cameras and she could run the footage back. To make things easier I told her no simply because she was trying to make a big fuss over something she knew she did wrong. She also doesn't give any receipts ever so I had to just throw the ice cream away. Worst experience ever 12 dollars down the drain :(

Yelp
Not all fosters freezers are created equal. This is the McDonald's of fosters. I swear they never have chocolate. Usually I leave. Today I stayed and got a twister. Don't expect it to be loaded with good stuff. They add toppings like tell run out of that too. I'll give them a star for being nice about it. The prices are also pretty ridiculous. I got a junior which is the smallest one and it was $7.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Had the worst experience at this fosters, do not recommend because this is not the first time. A older Armenian lady helped us today ( race and age don't matter but leaving that comment for reference so that management can help their team improve) I asked for a chocolate dipped waffle cone with nuts as pictured on display. When I received my cone, there was no nuts so I asked her if it included it ,just like the picture and she said no that if I wanted nuts, I had to tell her. I told her I wanted what was on the photo and I pointed and she knew so she then charged me $1.50 for the nuts. Which is fine but we only got two items and it was 20+.. she then just gave me the exact same cone double dip the cone in chocolate for a second time and added the nuts. Less than 10 nuts for $1.50 is crazy. Therefore, the entire ice cream was melting all over the cone and through at least 15 napkins( no exaggeration). I asked her why couldn't I get a new one especially if she was charging me the extra $1.50 and she said no that if I don't want it, she can give me a full refund. Long story short I stayed quiet and just took the cone half melted.. which I couldn't even eat because it was so melted that it broke apart. The other ice cream that we ordered, we paid extra money for extra toppings. There was not enough strawberry on our freeze therefore I asked her if we can have extra and I will pay and she told me no because I already purchased the ice cream. I'm not sure why she couldn't just sell me a side of it, but she was obviously trying to prove a point and be rude. I don't understand if people are bitter why are they working with attitude? It's not about the money. It's about the experience and the way I was treated. If management can contact me that would be nice.
google avatar

Edgar S.

Yelp
Against my better judgment I returned. 30 Dollars and change for a number one and number two. I was debating ordering a big boss alone but it's 11.50. This Froster freeze is charging too much. Probably the last time I go.

Yelp
I always try to support small businesses whenever possible, but I can confidently say I won't be returning to this one. Both times I visited, the store was closed despite their posted hours on Apple Maps showing they should have been open. Wanting to help, I stood outside and tried to update the information on Apple Maps. At that moment, the owner, an older Armenian woman, came out and said they were closed. I explained the hours on Apple Maps were incorrect, and I was simply trying to fix that. Instead of appreciating the effort, she got defensive, insisting that she knew when her business was open and accusing me of having an attitude when I was just trying to explain the issue. My partner eventually pulled up the app to show her the discrepancy, but it felt like she was more willing to listen to them (white) than to me. The entire interaction was unnecessarily confrontational and frustrating. I don't plan to deal with that kind of unprofessionalism again. Be wary of the posted hours--they seem to open and close based on personal convenience rather than the times listed.

Basia L.

Yelp
10.50 for a kids hot dog, drink and fries. Enough said. For these prices, they should make more of an effort to clean up their eating area, and offer free refills which they make it very clear they do not offer. Maybe I went on the wrong night, but there was some car meet up here too. Don't think I'll be back.
google avatar

Miranda Jay C.

Yelp
I come here only for ice cream and I just LOVE it, always delicious, not expensive at all and fast service. I've been coming to this location since I was a kid just for their soft serve.

Edward G.

Yelp
Everything about this place is awesome. Starting from the wonderful burgers to sundaes. Variety of options in everything. The car shows that happen are just a bonus :)
google avatar

Yelp
Foster's Freeze located on Glenoaks and Oilve in Burbank is a one stop destination for two of the most perfect pairings. Yup, burgers and icecream. Offering a variety of burgers, milkshakes and other tasty treats via drive thru or walk up window. Depending on the time, this place can get busy. We ended up with cheeseburger combos that included crispy fries, charbroiled burgers and drinks. If your hungry go with the double cheeseburger. Food was yummy. However very basic. It was more of a blast from the past type of place. There are a few outdoor tables and that is it. Most people take everything to go. They have a slow drive thru lane or a one window walk up option. They accept cash or credit.

Yelp
I wish I could leave a zero star review. The Armenian lady is so difficult to order from. She messed up my order which happens. Understanding. I ask for an exchange and she said that I ordered incorrectly. I order from here all the time. She even read me back my order and I explain to her that I didn't receive the order she just read back to me. She wouldn't exchange my order. She said she could exchange it but wouldn't allow me to reorder. What type of service is that?

Ashley F.

Yelp
Friendly staff, fast service but I do think the building itself needs to be repaired/updated. Food is pretty standard but it's always hit or miss if your stomach is going to hurt afterwards

Mark B.

Yelp
Service is atrocious You will get less smart talking to their employees I wouldn't feed my dog here. Service is terrible. Messed up all our orders I wish I could say at least it's cheap but it's not even cheap.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
This is old school. You walk up to order or the there is a drive thru. The hot fudge sundae was topped with a cherry. The soft serve ice cream is delicious . There is outside seating and you can seat out and watch the cars drive by
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
This place is hit or miss. Sometimes you get something good and you can be pleasantly surprised. For certainty is the old fashioned desserts like a chocolate malt! Yum! Also, their candy twisters are great for my sweet tooth!

Alexis R.

Yelp
Editing the original review: service has been better. Workers as well. Been a much better experience. Thank you. P.s. the hot dogs are as good as the ice cream

Yelp
A hollow shell of what it used to be. Years ago this place was great! I recently took someone from out of town to a spot that had some good memories for me - only to find out the service was terrible and the prices where INSANE now. Service: pretty bad - everything i asked was given an answer that sounded like it was a chore to give. The place was empty and felt a bit run down which made me sad. Food: priced horribly. A single cheeseburger was $10.00! Then i paid $5.00 for additional waffle cut fries only to be five clearly frozen so all crinkle cut fries. The ambiance was not the best - pricing bad - all of this makes me so sad as this was a Glendale/Burbank local spot that was always a nice change of pace. there are now, sadly, better options all over the place locally and i won't be going back : (
google avatar

Yelp
$28 for a kids meal and a burger combo? The only reason why we went here was because my kid wanted a corndog for dinner and it's walking distance from our place, but sheesh!!! The food isn't any better than any other fast food joint. I could have spent the same amount of money on something better. For now on I'm keeping my freezer stocked with frozen corn dogs and fries because never again
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
Overpriced for the quality you get. Good variety in the menu, from hot dogs to burgers, chili cheese fries, various milkshake flavors. You order at the window, they have a credit card charge fee if you aren't spending over $10. Food comes out quick, very fast food vibes. I liked how crispy the fries were. Chili dog with very thin hot dog size, more bread to hot dog ratio, chili was very basic. Few outdoor seating tables but looks like most items are taken to go. Easy parking next to it.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
We arrived 40 minutes before close and they looked at us, closed the window, turned off the lights, and flipped the closed sign. There were people in the drive-thru. They wouldn't even look at us.

Erxtsto J.

Yelp
Best Los Angeles California is affordable try anything mix fill Twister's menu up ,rap her here.
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
You guys close before your listed hours, please update I drove from Pasadena for a delicious chocolate dipped cone. This place is great but needs to honor information.
google avatar

Giselle E.

Yelp
You're better off going to a different foster freeze. This location has the most terrible service and it's dirty. They are very rude!! Especially the woman who's in charge. She gives you attitude for no reason...Save yourself the time and money.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
When is the last time you've gone to a Foster's Freeze? How about the the last time you've thought, hey let's go to Foster's Freeze. Yeah I didn't think so, not ever. I saw the place and thought I haven't been to one in years and I thought of getting a Sunday but unfortunately I didn't have time for that so I ordered a burger and fries which is a simple classic meal for them because it looked and tasted like a burger and fries should. I thi k the worse part about it was that I ate it so fast cuz I wanted more. I was glad I was able to stop, next time I need a Sundae for sure. I think places like this don't get enough love because alot of the places from the past are quickly disappearing. Ive learn to appreciate them more because some of the places we are getting now don't have any nostalgia or any deep spot in my heart.
google avatar

Marybeth M.

Yelp
My husband got me onto Foster Freeze since we don't have them in Michigan where I grew up. Now we come anytime we want to celebrate something.... New job, Father's Day, etc. I am nostalgic for a twisted chocolate dip cone and my husband loves the peach shakes. We recently got the cowboy dogs and was impressed in the size and flavor of them. Great spot to pop in with the kids and letting them pick out something.
google avatar

Siran T.

Yelp
Horrible. I ordered my usual, the rocky road twister and they had messed it up. Put Oreos in it and no chocolate syrup. When I questioned him, he said they'd been doing that way for 20 years! Well, other locations don't! You got it all WRONG!
google avatar

Marla S.

Yelp
Decided to give this place another shot, this time we came 2 hours before closing and what do ya know, they were open! They are still out of supplies and have items listed on the menu that they don't serve. The soft serve is still pretty great and stands true to the classic Fosters recipe. Beware, there was some insane car show going on at Fosters recently and all the cars filled the entire parking lot, leaving it impossible to park or access the walk-up ordering window. Patron at your own risk!
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Come here for the soft serve ice cream. Hubby got a double burger. He enjoyed it and said had that old school flavor. The serve was ok. It was a quick order and not much exchange happened. We sat outside for a bit and enjoyed our snacks. This place has been around forever and I've been coming since I was a kid. Don't let the 2 stars fool you. You come here for the soft serve and maybe some fries and burger. Don't come expecting something fancy, it's not gourmet but it's very solid.
google avatar

Tania G.

Yelp
Service was perfect!! My son enjoyed his shake so much and the service was fast. I will definitely visit again! The tables outside are perfect for a little mid day break with the kids.
google avatar

Dave F.

Yelp
Don't listen to the hater's out there. This place is a staple in the community for many years. They are known for soft serve ice cream. Not Burgers or corn dogs. Go to in and out for a burger and hot dog on a stick for corn dogs. People there are 2 types of soft serve? Vanilla and chocolate. This isn't some gourmet place so keep your expectations somewhat normal and you'll never be disappointed. Add all the other stuff you want after. Most come here for their sugar fix. Try it at least once sitting in parking lot and relax. Enjoy...
google avatar

Cade H.

Yelp
Well.....I just paid $14.31 for a single burger.....yea I'm out. And it was painfully ehh.

Jillian M.

Yelp
Yum!!! Great ice cream; thick and dreamy and they aren't skimpy with the cookie dough!!

Micheal J.

Yelp
This place is horrible. Don't ever come here. The workers literally have the worst customer service. The second I started ordering they made me regret pulling up.

Doña O.

Yelp
Love a good old fashioned ice cream shop!! Great for the summer season. Lots of options!

Steph C.

Yelp
Ice cream was fire, dipped cones the way to go. Don't order other food here and you'll have a good time
google avatar

Ed C.

Yelp
My dog can make a better cone. Idk if it's the owners that are being cheap or the employees flat out suck.

Maggye G.

Yelp
Good burger, was not expecting but I am very picky. Loved my ice cream too. My dog also enjoyed his patty and vanilla I soft ice cream. Wish it had more seating.

Kelley C.

Yelp
Great "Twisters" like a DQ blizzard and dipped cones are great!! Their waffle fries were amazing - the seasoning!!!
