Yelp
Really disappointing experience at Founding Farmers this morning - I would not be back.
First of all, our expectations were set for a good experience, 2 stars for me indicated it fell short of expectations. With the type of food on the menu, the price point, and the reviews combined, we felt very mislead. We expected a lot more. I will walk through our morning and give an itemized run down of the items I think they did well and not so well.
First the ambiance is a 5/5. The restaurant is very clean, the chairs and booths are comfortable, the light fixtures are all new looking. Inside is beautifully curated and very comfy. Very appropriate for a business lunch, a casual lunch, breakfast, etc. It has a really nice stained glass hanging piece and the decor is really beautiful. A lot of money went into the ambiance.
The food menu is 5/5. I think they offer a great variety of sandwiches, salads, soups, entrees, etc. The choices were consistent with what you would expect from southern inspired American fare, the combinations made sense, the sides and entrees were well curated. Great menu with lots of options. Lots of desserts, there is a mini bakery in the front so definitely check that out
Drink and bar menu 4/5. They have about 5-10 cocktail options for each type of liquor - there are so many cocktail options. I wish they had beefed up their non alcoholic selection a bit, but the variety for the regular section was astounding. It seems like many of the liquors are made in house.
Now we run into all of the problems.
Service 2/5. The only thing I can really say was our server wasn't rude and he helped answer questions but that's about all. I requested Mac and cheese instead of potatos for my side and he was able to do that but then my collared greens got replaced with green beans without notifying me. It took a long time for him to come back for me to even let him know, and then he quickly let me know they were out and ran off again. We were out of two different sauces and could not flag him down until 20-30 mins later. He passed our table multiple times and walked right by us. By then I gave up on most of my food it had already gone cold. We were going to order a dessert but passed since we had to travel today and couldn't spend more time here. If our server had showed up earlier during service I probably would've brought the quality of the food to his attention - unfortunately he was absent.
Food 2/5. The biggest kicker for the review is the fact that the food and service, the two biggest points for a review, were far below expectations. I outlined above the problems with the service and the food was just as bad. We had a southern fried chicken with Mac and cheese, green beans and a biscuit. My boyfriend ordered a turkey and avocado BLT with fries. Everything looked amazing when it came out, but the presentation was misleading.
The fried chicken was the skimpiest portion I've ever had. I may have gotten a bad piece but the breast was literally nonexistent, I cut through the fried part and the entire piece was bone and skin, no meat. HALF of the chicken went to waste because it was such a bad piece. The second piece had meat on it but it was so insanely dry and bland. Some of the worst fried chicken I've had. The Mac and cheese was delicious but felt more like a cream pasta than a mac. The green beans were inedible - no flavor at all and they were shredded (supposed to be fancier I guess?) but they were literally so undercooked they were crunchy. Biscuit was good, Im sure their baked stuff is fine. Over half of my meal went to waste because the green beans were inedible and the chicken was half skin and bone.
My boyfriends sandwich was the same deal. Fries on the side were boring and under seasoned and the sandwich itself the bread was too soggy and the turkey was extremely dry and bland. The produce (tomato, lettuce and avocado) was fresh, but for soggy bread, dry turkey and the SKIMPIEST bacon portion I've ever seen? Not worth it.
On the menu it also specifies there is a 5% optional charge for a mental health/healthcare fund for the workers... if this is such a big priority for Founding Farmers, why is this optional? I am disappointed that the cost of this is put on the customer not the business especially considering the food is already overpriced and they have multiple locations in dc. It feels like a marketing ploy to advertise they care about their employees mental health on the menu when they aren't including this in their normal operating budget. Do better.
Overall this seems like a really popular spot for serving overpriced under seasoned food on a fancy plate. Great ambiance and presentation, but if you want to enjoy your food I'd look elsewhere.
