My husband and I were visiting some friends who live in nearby Kennett Square and they introduced us to this lovely restaurant. I was immediately charmed by the meticulous attention to the grounds - vibrant trees, bushes, and flowers with lovely whimsical accents such as a small fire pit, wooden rocking chairs, and a garden gate with metal pots and pans positioned as decor. I cannot speak to the interior of the restaurant because we chose to lunch outdoors, but the patio spaces are incredible. From what I could tell, they have four patio sections, making this one of the largest outdoor eating areas I've seen. On the unseasonably hot day we visited, I thoroughly appreciated that most of the tables were in the shade or under an awning. We arrived at the restaurant shortly before they opened at 11:30am - if you have to wait for a table, they certainly have cute and comfortable grounds to keep you happy. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and even though we were limited to an hour and a half due to our table being reserved after us, we never once felt rushed. I noticed that the area filled up very quickly, so I do recommend reserving your table in advance - even if you are just going for an early Saturday lunch like us.
For an appetizer, our table split the crab nachos, which was such a unique spin on the classic nacho. On each chip, there was plenty of delicious crab, covered with a blend of cheeses and avocado sour cream; the most intriguing thing was that the restaurant opted to go with a tomato sauce base, so it resembled a flatbread as well as a nacho - it totally worked though and I found myself really loving this appetizer. For my entree, I went with the margherita flatbread which was super thin and crispy. After eating the appetizer, I was afraid it might be too similar but I was happy that the crust and tomato sauce were different on both. The rich tomato sauce on the flatbread was in small dollops along with drizzles of pesto. The serving size was quite large, but because of the thinness, the flatbread made for a light lunch, even with me eating the vast majority of it. My husband's entree was two crab cakes with grilled asparagus. We both agreed that they were prepared well and not too heavy. Our friends ordered the beet salad with grilled chicken and a soft-shell crab sandwich which was the daily special. Both dishes looked outstanding and were met with rave reviews. My favorite bite of the day (or many bites, actually) was the lemon meringue ice cream pie. It was even better than it looks in my photo! The balance of the creamy sweet meringue with the tart lemon custard and vanilla ice cream was perfect. I can't think of a better way to end our delightful meal.
