The Best Restaurants in West Chester | Eater Philly

"Whether you sit outside on the flower-flanked patio or inside the rustic dining room, you will have a delightful experience at Four Dogs Tavern. Chef David Cox’s traditional French culinary background is evident with dips of crusty bread in a velvety fondue made with the tavern’s namesake IPA, brewed locally by Stolen Sun Brewing Co. Don’t miss the piping hot vessels of escargot topped with garlic herb butter and airy gougeres." - Sam Herring

Google
Never had a bad meal at Four Dogs until my most recent. Ate on the dog friendly patio. It was busy. Our server was hustling. She recommended the crab cakes, but they were the most tasteless I have ever eaten. Had a weird, kind of doughy texture too. My husband's fish sandwich had way too much breading. Couldn't taste the fish. Had very good drinks and mushroom soup.

Had a great day date with my fiancé at the Four Dogs Tavern. Mike, who was bartending, also waited on us at our table in the bar area and he was so personable and friendly. He made great recommendations which we tried and absolutely loved... grilled octopus, shrimp lejon, beet & goat cheese salad with the most tender chicken (you could cut it with your fork). The portions are substantial and beautiful presentation. I can't wait to go back this summer and sit outside on the outdoor patio! This is a great spot to go to then drive around the beautiful countryside and hit either Northbrook Marketplace or the Amish Market at 202 and 926 for some great baked goods. Highly recommend this restaurant and will be back!

Google
Four Dogs Tavern never disappoints! Every time I visit, I'm reminded why it's one of my absolute favorite spots. The service is always top-notch—attentive, friendly, and professional. The food? Consistently delicious—creative, flavorful, and made with care. Whether you're stopping in for a casual drink or a full meal, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. If I could give it six stars, I would (and just did). Highly recommend!

Google
Quintessential country tavern, tucked away in Chester County. The setting and atmosphere are great, sadly the food and service have gone down hill in the past few years. This used to be a go to spot for us, but no longer. We loved bringing the kids and dog to sit outside on the patio. On our last three visits the bees/ yellow jackets were everywhere. This is a known issue but they will not address.

Google
This is a really nice place to stop by and grab something to eat, super casual and laid back and the outdoor area is dog friendly. They even brought my buddy some water, the service was excellent. I highly recommend the onion soup and Reuben sandwich. My husband ordered the Carolina pulled pork sandwich and it was also really good. The drinks are on the pricier side, $14 for a hot cider so definitely something to keep in mind when ordering. The food was fairly priced. Overall i recommend this place and definitely would return.

Google
What a treasure that we wouldn't have found were it not for the local recommendation! We are based an hour away, but enjoy this area for hiking, history, and food exploration, and were delighted with how well-above-expectations this place turned out. We chose the bar seating in the back, which was a particularly charming, cozy nook, and were treated to excellent insider information from the ammicably respectful bar tenders. They know their stuff; on recommendation we got the best clam chowder soup, two lovely cocktails, shockingly well made pomme frites with garlic aioli, a special in house dessert, and the whole cured olives. All incredible. But the true stunner was the entre meatloaf melting with scrumptious flavors in our mouths. It won't be there much longer, with the changing seasonal menu, so I highly recommend trying it this weekend. The fresh salad greens of the brilliant pulled pork sandwich were also beautifully dressed and balanced. It was the first of many visits, but I don't think you can go wrong here. The French cuisine-trained, well-travelled chef owner has cultivated a gem. I particularly appreciate the local, hand-made and grown ingredients. No photos, because, frankly, we were just too engrossed in our meal to stop for proof.

Michael B.

Google
Really nice atmosphere with good vibes all around. It’s a kid-friendly spot too, which is a huge plus for our family. The patio has a nice layout and very cozy. Overall, it checks all the boxes for a solid place for lunch and dinner.

Google
Four Dogs is the beeest! The crab cakes (and cheese puffs!) are exquisite, as is the filet mignon. I haven't had everything on the menu, but have had enough to know it's top-notch. Chef David and his staff know what they're doing! That, the charming rustic atmosphere and the dog-friendly theme make it a cozy gem in the country!

Yelp
Time to update my review. Ambiance: Rustic feel, we sat outside. Seating: We sat at a table outside. Service: Friendly and attentive. Crowd: Older. Drinks: Good beer and mixed drink selection. Food: Food was good, small portions. Restrooms: N/A, did not use. Parking: Plenty of private parking. Value: Ok, overpriced. Experience: Nice atmosphere, friendly service, good food, but expensive. I'll come here for the outdoor seating, since it is 5 minutes from my house.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as pleasant today, but it's still such a relaxing place to visit. The rain held off till we finished, so that was good. One item I was hoping for was not on the menu, but there were other choices. I chose the crabcake special, and was not a huge fan of that. It's not something I'd order again as I found the crabcake small and dry. Even with the tartar sauce, which was left off and had to be requested, didn't help the dryness. The beet salad was very good though, so I'd order that again in a heartbeat. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal of Jerk Chicken Wings and a Margherita Flatbread. The service wasn't rushed, and Sarah did a great job. I'll have to go back again when the Watermelon Salad with Feta returns.

Yelp
Yummy and cozy spot! The service was good and we were able to walk in and get a table with no problems. They had lots of local beer options and a range of options on the menu. We ended up deciding to split the fondue with steak tips and beet salad. All of it tasted fresh and local. Cute little area to walk around outside too.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing. Beet salad was so good! Loved the staff too - very friendly and did a great job helping me choose! I'm a little picky!
google avatar

Christiane M.

Yelp
the vibe of the restaurant is super cool - very rustic and chill but still feels nice. service was attentive and my mac and cheese was so good. i rate 3 stars because my family had crab cakes and said they weren't particularly flavorful and because prices were very high - macaroni and cheese was $24 which feels expensive for the vibe of the restaurant. still a nice place though, just wouldn't come all the time

Yelp
I brought some friends from out of town to Four Dogs after a long day tubing down the Brandywine. The staff was nice, the wait for a table (no reservation) was quick, and the ambiance was great outside on the patio. I will say I don't think the food is anything too special, most of us agreed it was lacking some flavor for their prices. But otherwise a great meal in a cute spot.
google avatar

Judith G.

Yelp
Food is always delicious, everyone who works here is super friendly and the fireplace in the bar is perfect on a cold winter day!

Carley D.

Yelp
Talk about a HORRIBLE experience: from the waitress chewing gum and asking us to hand her our plates to the wilted lettuce and unblackened blackened chicken, everything was terrible. Service, food, ambiance--everything I used to love about Four Dogs Tavern was gone. I'm very sad; this used to be one of the best restaurants in West Chester.
google avatar

Ruth L.

Yelp
We were taking a little vacation in the area to visit some local gardens and this is the best restaurant we ate at. It's true we paid a bit less at some other places--but I'm tired of paying for mediocre food. Here you pay a fair price and get quality ingredients that are well prepared. We had a shrimp appetizer, Reuben sandwich and a flatbread. Everything was flavorful and we felt good afterwards. The service was good and the ambiance was pleasant.
google avatar

Caroline K.

Yelp
So happy I finally got to try Four Dogs Tavern! The outdoor space is just so charming. Even while waiting for a table, you can enjoy a drink and the atmosphere outside. For our appetizers, we got the charcuterie board and blackened chicken nachos which were both amazing. The highlight to me was the charcuterie board, which featured grilled bread, blue cheese, parmesan crisps, what I'm assuming was gruyere?, fig jam, a selection of cured meats, olives & baby pickles. I kind of got full from the appetizers, but for our entrees, we split the french dip sandwich and the fish tacos. The fish tacos were "make them yourself" which was a little overwhelming. I guess it's a fun little activity to do at the table though! Ultimately everything tasted great, and I will definitely be coming back! Maybe next time I'll bring my dog

Yelp
Great food. Great location and a loved the history of the area. The patio area is beautiful.

Yelp
Food, Service was fantastic. Enjoyed the ambiance of a hearty pub in a small Chester Co. town. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This out of the way rustic inn has some great food and drink! You can also bring your dog to the outside patio (if it behaves). The chef routinely updates the menu with new items and everything is always very fresh. One of our favorites on a chilly Fall day is the fondue! The burger and NC BBQ pork sandwich are awesome as is the humongous Reuben! Sadly, one of the local favorites, the Lump Blue Crab Nachos and Beef Chili have been taken off the menu (management-please reconsider putting them back on!). Service can be slow if busy and on nice weekends it's very busy.

Ruby C.

Yelp
Awesome food, not the cheapest, but well worth it! We came because our favorite server, Devin, is working there- service was phenomenal, as always. Good food, great service, can't go wrong.
google avatar

Isabella H.

Yelp
The waitress was very unfriendly. I ordered a paloma and I rarely ever send drinks back before so I was very hesitant but I tried the paloma and it was way too strong and just straight tequila. So I asked if I could send it back and the waitress was like yeah sure no problem and offered me a different drink. I ordered the Hot cider and it was really good! The chocolate cake was also really decadent and rich. When the bill came the paloma was still on the bill after asking if I could send it back so I brought it up and was told just because I don't like a drink it can't come off the bill. I thought that was really unusual since most restaurants are okay with it if you don't drink it and they'll bring you a different drink. So I was just shocked after I asked if I could send it back and the waitress said it was no problem. I just think that she should've disclosed that before giving me another drink that I wouldn't have been refunded or anything.

Yelp
Great farm to table food! Drinks are well made. Patio is large & dog accommodating with fireplaces. Live music is fun! Highly recommended for happy hour, casual lunch, or date night.

Yelp
We were in the WC area for a college visit. We found this place right outside the campus and stopped for drinks and appetizers. The Nachos were amazing. I would highly recommend

John K.

Yelp
I've been going to 4 dogs for over 20 years, even before the owners bought it in 2006. Fully understand that it is not a cheap option for dinner but the food and ambiance are amazing. Service has never been an issue for me. If you are looking for value pricing this isn't the place but if you want to enjoy a beautiful atmosphere and good food it is.

Yelp
I have been going there for years and never had any complaints until today. I was there to celebrate my birthday. There were five of us at our table. It was very busy. When the food came out four of us were served and we waited about a half hour for my daughter to get her order. After asking where her food was, twice, we were told the order was never put in. I asked to speak to the manager for some kind of explanation instead of apologizing to me or rectify the situation. I was yelled at by this manager. I have never been so poorly treated at a restaurant and will never go back there again because of that manager. Needless to say gave our waiter a very nice tip for having to work under such circumstances and being managed so poorly. No wonder he made a mistake. I would too if I was under that much stress because of management.
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
Service was outstanding. Food was delicious. Presentation of the food was excellent! It was all delicious I got the chicken BLT and it was great. Definitely will be going back!
google avatar

Ellen L.

Yelp
The French onion soup appeared to be precooked and then heated as it was not hot? Just an average experience.
google avatar

Tommy W.

Yelp
Took my brother there for dinner. We had a great meal, service was fine. There was a problem with the draft beer. No drat lines working. Problem, but our waitress managed to come through for us.
google avatar

Yelp
Went as a group for lunch. Great daily special. Food was great. Service was unbelievable for our 14 person group. Liked it so much we stayed in the bar two more hours!! A must visit!!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
A local treasure excellent food very friendly service Nice out door seating Or cozy indoor dining The nachos with local beef is a favorite The even have their own beer on tap made by a local microbrewery
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Delicious food, especially the appetizers. Best charred octopus in the area. Amazing duck terrine. And the Shrimp Le John is delicious. Good wine selection. Atmosphere is cozy in the winter, and wonderful outdoors in the spring and summer. Great spot for a date.

Yelp
An amazing place for dinner with some friends and/or family!!!!! The inside was beautiful and reminded me of an old cabin. There was an upstairs to the restaurant as well as an outdoor seating area. I heard in the summer it is beautiful set up outside and people bring their dogs all the time. I will definitely be bringing my dog here in the summer! As for the food, it is delicious. Unfortunately I panic ordered (ordered at the last second) and got a salad as a default and didn't enjoy it as much and some of my friend's food and it was great but will definitely be trying some of their other items in the near future. It is a bit pricey, but I guess you're paying for the atmosphere/dining experience with some friends/family. The service was top notch, our server was great and attentive!

Diana M.

Yelp
As to the food- I have always enjoyed dining here but today not so much. i ordered the crab cake sandwich which was mediocre at best-more sandwich than crab. As to the service-There were five of us at the table. The shared appetizer and four of the five meals came out together. However, my granddaughter's lunch did not appear and, after asking our server twice for it, it finally came when the rest of us were nearly finished. We asked to see the manager who arrived asking as to our problem. The restaurant was crowded and extremely noisy. My daughter tapped on the table to get the man's attention to explain our concerns. Instead of listening to us, he chastised my daughter for tapping on the table and gave us a lecture on respect and how hard he worked as the manager, demanding an apology. Although she meant no disrespect, she apologized but he continued to rant. At no time did he acknowledge the late dinner or offer any reason or solution for the inconvenience. He even stated that it wasn't a problem as "we were still eating" and continued his rude behavior. Later, the server told us that he had simply neglected to put the order in and apologized. When the check arrived for the full amount, we added a substantial tip as anyone can make a mistake and we felt that he deserved it for having to work under such a disrespectful and arrogant manager.

Yelp
Thank goodness for outdoor seating because that's the only way that I will dine at a restaurant currently. We were visiting with friends and this was their first time visiting Four Dogs as well. They are new to the area so we were glad to help them give it a try. It was quite busy on Saturday afternoon but the wait for a table was only about 15 minutes. We were seated outside under a very large tent. The server was a nice young man that was very efficient and helpful. Everything that we had was absolutely delicious. I ordered the mushroom soup and a side of the brussels sprouts - which I enjoyed thoroughly. I also shared some warm, rustic walnut-raisin bread with date butter. Let me tell you...I would come back just for that freakin' bread. It's that good. Others at the table had a gluten-free flatbread option and French onion soup. We also had cocktails! Two of us had delicious whiskey seasonal bevs and the others had hot apple cider and something else with gin (I think). Overall this was an excellent experience from start to finish. My only "criticism" is that the menu does not do the food justice. It's very hard to make a decision because some of the descriptions of the food could be a little bit more elaborate (to help figure out what to order). The choices are extremely eclectic and varied enough to really please anyone with any kind of taste or dietary restriction.

Michele D.

Yelp
Great food and service, love the patio in the spring and summer! And you can bring your well-behaved pup along too!

Yelp
Marshallton's Four-Dogs Famed Chester County Tavern Door: not an entrance #Nola_Haiku #FourDogs #Tavern #ChesterCounty #EatLocal #Haiku #GoodEats #SignsOfHumans @FourDogsTavern #BlackAndWhite

Yelp
I ordered the Mushroom Flatbread. It was really dry. Was not on the traditional rectangle flatbread but a dry circle. I only ate 2 pieces took the rest home I chopped up a tomato cooked it with garlic and OO added fresh basil and served it to my husband for dinner. (I can't eat tomatoes) My desert was delicious. Sticky Toffee Pudding

Beth G.

Yelp
let me start by saying this is a LOUD restaurant so, if you're going for something romantic, find another place. Food.....Eh, go someplace else for this as well. Started with nachos. suppose to be table shareable according to their menu. for $18.50 you get about 25 chips with a sprinkling of cheese (not even really melted) and a sprinkling of tomato and white onion. no sour cream, no guac, nothing. Way over priced. Main meal was the risotto special with 4 shrimp and a butternut/mushroom risotto. Sounds good, and right? only thing good was the nicely cooked shrimp. The risotto was like a bowl of wallpaper paste goo with a couple slices of mushrooms and squash. Will definitely NOT be going back nor would I recommend it. don't waste your time or money on this overpriced, sub par establishment
google avatar

Tanner C.

Yelp
Great service and the outdoor (covered and uncovered) is dog friendly. It's a little more on the pricey side. Indoor bar is rustic and inviting. Go Tos: Prime Rib Sandwich with upgrade fries to pomme frites. Mushroom Soup. Pear Salad. Crab Cakes on special. Lemon Ice cream Pie (take it to go if you need to, it's huge!), Martini's Just a short drive from West Chester this place is worth it! Dont Get: Mexican Grouper Special
google avatar

Theresa S.

Yelp
Brought our 2 small toddlers here, were immediately sat. And sat we did, for 25-30 mins until a server finally came over, telling us he forgot us. Ordered and then the food came out long before even our drinks. And this food is not cheap, so be served without even having a water for the kids was ridiculous. The pasta was soaked in a heavy cream sauce that was not flavorful, my kids didn't like their entrees either. Bad experience overall. The only good thing we had during the entire meal was the key lime pie. Will not return here, that's for sure!!
google avatar

Savannah M.

Yelp
Pros -dog friendly -nice outdoor environment Cons -highly overpriced. We were charged $30 dollars for nachos with chicken? Ridiculous! -food quality going down hill -slow service -menu not flexible. Would not remove olives from salad despite allergy and would not substitute fries for "pickled vegetables" which was the listed side with Turkey burger Do not recommend unless you are going out for the outdoor environment only. Food is not great and it is extremely overpriced for what you get.

Rodger C.

Yelp
This was a comfortable place to eat with a unique menu. A fantastic change from the ordinary cookie cutter places. Service was attentive and fast on a busy Friday night. Portions were good and everything was served with presentations easy on the eye. The price was high, but what isn't these days!

David M.

Yelp
BOYCOT THIS PLACE!! Prices are far too high!!!! $10 for a draft beer? $20 for a tiny pizza with a food cost of $2? really stingy serving of "Rustic Nachos" for $18.50??? Ridiculous! Bartenders play favorites, and are not nice to my friends and other regulars!! Often the service at the bar is just awful!! They have been the only game in town out here for too long!!!
google avatar

Suzanne D.

Yelp
Waiting for our table with the pooch. Always a fun place to take your well behaved dog. Food was good, atmosphere was great. Always a stop when we visit nearby Kennett Square.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Not sure what happened but the food quality and value used to be better. I no longer think the price is worth it anymore. Better restaurants worth dining at.
google avatar

Miriam S.

Yelp
This place used to be "our place", we went at least once a week. I emphasize, we went, as we can no longer afford to go there! Their chicken nachos are $30! And God forbid you'd like a little sour cream, they're going to charge you an extra three dollars for a tiny little dollop. And of course, this up charge is not mentioned on their menu! Their happy hour is a joke, and the only reason we go back every once in a while it's because the service is so great. All of the staff is so friendly, greets us by name, and always remembers my favorite drink. It breaks my heart to see the food quality go down so far, while their prices just keep climbing.
google avatar

Meg G.

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance are 10/10. I've come with friends, groups of 6+ and the service was just as good as when I am there with 2 people.
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
Cozy tavern with great staff and food. Good draft beer selection, the menu unique selections with options we are all familiar with. The beer was cold, the fries were hot, the salads were crisp and fresh. We are not from this area but we hope to be back soon
google avatar

Ann V.

Yelp
We have not been to the Four Dogs in a while so we decided to stop by for dinner after our day trip at Longwood Gardens. We walked out of there sticker shocked! Two drinks at the bar were $30 - not including the tip. We started our meal with a cup of soup and chili. When I got our bill we were charged $20 for a cup of chili!!! I mean come on?! My husband's pasta dish lacked flavor and my turkey burger was just bad. Needless to say we will not be retuning. I normally take photos of my food and post them. In this case the food was not photo worthy.
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Great menu selection, and very friendly and helpful staff! The bar is excellent and they mix a nice drink (although I'm surprised they don't have blocks of ice for their Old Fashion and specialty drinks). I enjoyed the chargrilled octopus--it's grilled perfect and delicious. I'm also going to call out the Linguini and Bolognese Meat Sauce. It's spectacular, honestly one of the top 2-3 I've ever had (homemade and just melts in your mouth). I wish the prices were a bit friendlier on the wallet, but will admit the food and service are very good. It's also a very nice area and a great drive.

Yelp
I want to preface this review by saying that I live in Chester County, with some beautiful land and streams abound. I understand people from the suburbs and City would instantly be charmed by this quaint place. Now, my review: I believe that you need to pay for ambience yes, but this price gouging is amazing. The last time my girlfriend and I were there prices seemed considerably cheaper. Yesterday we went for a hamburger and a French dip, with two drinks and tip came to $85. There's no small price items on the menu, even their appetizers are near $20 a plate. I would have no problems with these prices if there were some sort of flair to the cooking. My burger was standard, The fries were bland, and the dip was barely passable. If an owner happens to be reading this review, please consider what I'm saying, as I want every business in Chester County to thrive. You guys used to offer a lot better for a decent price, and now we've decided not to return.

J D.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Service was attentive. Food was delicious. Salad with grilled tuna had decent portion side. The lemon pie is just ridiculous.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Amazing ambience- they had a fire going which was so nice. We got mushroom soup, French onion, and escargot. All were fantastic. The French onion soup is a slam dunk. Very cute little town and really cool restaurant!!

Yelp
The Four Dogs Tavern is great. I used to come here all the time in my youth and just visited yesterday for the first time in probably a decade. It's just an all around good spot. We got the baked brie to start (it was delicious) and then I got a watermelon feta salad. I don't normally get salads for entrées but yesterday I wasn't very hungry. Don't get me wrong the salad was great and very fresh but today I'm wishing I had taken advantage of some of the more popular entrée dishes because I know they would have been terrific. Our server was also amazing. + Great outdoor seating for a beautiful summer night + They sell local beer

Yelp
My husband and I were visiting some friends who live in nearby Kennett Square and they introduced us to this lovely restaurant. I was immediately charmed by the meticulous attention to the grounds - vibrant trees, bushes, and flowers with lovely whimsical accents such as a small fire pit, wooden rocking chairs, and a garden gate with metal pots and pans positioned as decor. I cannot speak to the interior of the restaurant because we chose to lunch outdoors, but the patio spaces are incredible. From what I could tell, they have four patio sections, making this one of the largest outdoor eating areas I've seen. On the unseasonably hot day we visited, I thoroughly appreciated that most of the tables were in the shade or under an awning. We arrived at the restaurant shortly before they opened at 11:30am - if you have to wait for a table, they certainly have cute and comfortable grounds to keep you happy. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and even though we were limited to an hour and a half due to our table being reserved after us, we never once felt rushed. I noticed that the area filled up very quickly, so I do recommend reserving your table in advance - even if you are just going for an early Saturday lunch like us. For an appetizer, our table split the crab nachos, which was such a unique spin on the classic nacho. On each chip, there was plenty of delicious crab, covered with a blend of cheeses and avocado sour cream; the most intriguing thing was that the restaurant opted to go with a tomato sauce base, so it resembled a flatbread as well as a nacho - it totally worked though and I found myself really loving this appetizer. For my entree, I went with the margherita flatbread which was super thin and crispy. After eating the appetizer, I was afraid it might be too similar but I was happy that the crust and tomato sauce were different on both. The rich tomato sauce on the flatbread was in small dollops along with drizzles of pesto. The serving size was quite large, but because of the thinness, the flatbread made for a light lunch, even with me eating the vast majority of it. My husband's entree was two crab cakes with grilled asparagus. We both agreed that they were prepared well and not too heavy. Our friends ordered the beet salad with grilled chicken and a soft-shell crab sandwich which was the daily special. Both dishes looked outstanding and were met with rave reviews. My favorite bite of the day (or many bites, actually) was the lemon meringue ice cream pie. It was even better than it looks in my photo! The balance of the creamy sweet meringue with the tart lemon custard and vanilla ice cream was perfect. I can't think of a better way to end our delightful meal.
