A Beer-Riddled Dive Bar Food Crawl Through Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley | Eater LA

"A beloved, small, dark Valley dive with a friendly-surly staff and the intimate, slightly shadowy vibe of a classic watering hole; it doesn’t serve food regularly and is notable for having been used as a filming location for Magnolia." - Noah Galuten

The 20 Best Dive Bars in Los Angeles

"For a dive bar that looks like it’s right out of a 1970s television sitcom, drop by this Valley Village lounge that’s replete with saloon doors, wood-paneled walls, well-lit dart boards, and even a cushion running along the edge of the bar top to rest weary barfly elbows. Locals flock here to enjoy strong pours while watching a game and singing karaoke. For those looking for an early start, the saloon doors swing open at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends." - Eater Staff

The location is a very chill vibe with a red tint inside. Feels like a relaxed drinking environment to take friends to. The dart board is a nice touch with a lot of skillful players. The drinks were good and the bartenders were cool. I’d definitely come back here again to try their other menu items. Parking is limited but worth the trip.

I went for Shyboy pizza and stayed for darts! Pizza is served Wednesdays and Sundays only. It was very tasty and well-prepared. Rick has fabulous service and a nice guy who is passionate about food. I had a drink and it was very affordable. The crowd was very local. Everyone I encountered was nice. Bar staff were attentive, kind, and professional. Parking was easy.

I mean … being a regular for almost 10 yrs. This place never disappoints …. Never…. The cast of characters is entertaining and the history etc … the owner Mark is the best… I’m not gonna go in too much cuz they already know how much we love and haunt this place…. You’re missing out if you don’t come.

Google
Definitely a CHEERS atmosphere where everyone seems to know your name. Had a blast at karaoke. Staff has an abundance of great personalities.

Google
I love dives and this one feels like home. They’ve got a guy (“Shy Guy”) providing food now: pizza, burgers, wings, snacks. Great addition! Karaoke on….Wednesday?

Google
OK. Let me introduce you to the finest bar in the nation. The Foxfire Room in Valley Village, CA. Of this, there is no question. They have all of the live and local games, major playoffs, and all conceivable sports. I like Sunday mornings: they feature professional bull riding. This is a dark place that caters to all crowds. They serve real drinks for real working people. See Jody on Thursdays or see Rhonda on Sundays. They're always glad to see you. Tell them Nick sent you.

AUTHENTIC ST. PATRICKS DAY IN FOX FIRE! Great atmosphere, friendly crowd, Generous drinks and great music. Im from Ireland (lived in metro DC since '88) and am visiting my son and his family in the Village. I usually hate venturing out on St. Paddy's day in the US. I am glad he suggested FFR tonight!

Google
Your classic dive with just enough charm to keep you coming back. Strong drinks, dim lighting, and a jukebox that knows its audience. Service can be hit or miss, but hey, it’s a dive—you’re not here for Michelin stars. Perfect for a low-key night.

Yelp
Secret sleeper dive bar off Magnolia. So glad I went. There isn't a menu posted on yelp for a reason, it's a dive bar...they'll make anything you want. I'll tell you the bloodies are $7.50 and that's all you need to know. Rhonda is a nice bartender that makes you feel like family. Will be back to get wasted

Yelp
Solid dive bar. I can see why it's a go to for a lot of people in the studio city area! Great beer selection and service is quick.

Yelp
Lively and filled to the brim with humans on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We got there at 3pm and some people were so drunk they could hardly walk. The bathroom was one stall only and when I went inside the woman outside waiting started kicking the door and yelling.... It seemed like a lot of locals come here as several people seemed to know each other. It's really dark inside and a bit stuffy. The drinks were very strong and I could see why some patrons were already past the limit. One man was spinning around on his chair at the bar and the man next to us was so intoxicated he couldn't focus his eyes and was talking to himself. Overall I did enjoy my time there, as it was a very nice date.

Yelp
It's a pretty active spot with karaoke. Came In randomly with a group of friends after a goth night and it was really fun. We got to see some local talent show off their pipes. Some good voices. The bartenders were busy but friendly. I ordered some food there mind you I was buzzing hard so the food tasted amazing. Drinks are nice and strong. Overall had a great experience.

Yelp
I went for Shyboy pizza and stayed for darts! Best dart machine I've seen!

Yelp
I used to go to the foxfire around the year 2001. It looks like it really bounced back. In 2001 , it was getting a nasty, rowdy crowd . I guess Mark cleaned it up. From what I saw in the photos, it looks absolutely beautiful. My compliments Mark.

Yelp
Valley Village staple. Exactly what you want out of a dive bar: cheap drinks, chill people and heavy pours.

Yelp
Ch. 3 Just got notified that my previous review for Foxfire is being featured and as it has been many years since writing it I thought I'd re-read it so I did. I would definitely like to edit some of the stuff about the guy buying us a drink... seemed I rambled on too much there but I can't edit so I am just going to update it. I just want to say that I frequent this bar more as of late and it really is one of my favorite bars in L.A. The bartenders pour a good strong drink, in fact I've been known to ask for a weak pour. The regulars here are a friendly and entertaining bunch and I will reiterate that I love the old school vibe with the wood paneling and red vinyl booths. They have a great juke box and a really fun karaoke night or two if I'm not mistaken.... I know they do it on Sunday nights but I'm pretty sure there's also another karaoke night during the week. To summarize, this place is an outstanding little bar with fun people, great drinks and atmosphere and I just love it!

Yelp
This is a very friendly neighborhood bar. The draft beer was cold and they had a decent selection. I watched half of a Dodgers game from the bar.

Yelp
Nestled discreetly in the heart of the city, Foxfire is truly a diamond in the rough - the best-kept secret for those in the know! From the moment you step inside, the cozy atmosphere wraps you in its warm embrace. It's the quintessential "hole in the wall" with an unbeatable charm that makes it an absolute favorite. The service at Foxfire is nothing short of exceptional! The staff goes above and beyond, treating you like a cherished regular from the first hello. Prompt, friendly, and always with a smile - they make you feel right at home. And let's talk about the darts - a game-changer! Foxfire boasts the best dart setup in town, providing endless entertainment. What's more exciting is the chance to engage in thrilling dart battles against patrons from other bars. It's a fantastic way to spice up your night and make new friends. In a city full of options, Foxfire stands out as a unique haven for those seeking a memorable experience. Whether you're a local looking for a new hangout or a visitor in search of authentic fun, Foxfire is the place to be! Cheers to Foxfire - where good times are not just promised but delivered with flair.

Yelp
Went there a few times, including NYE of 2017, had a blast, so much fun! The last visit was completely different, though. The place looked half empty, yet there were one or two people at every booth. My gf and I went to sit down on the far end of one with only a single guy there, but he quickly said, "Oh, those seats are taken." Unbelievably, the same thing happened at another nearly empty booth (the place isn't huge to begin with). So we went to the bar, where there were two stools open, but the bartender said, "Yeah, I think those people are coming back, they're outside smoking." No offer to take our order was included. We left, went to the Roguelike Tavern in Burbank instead, had a great time. I get that bars have "regulars", and those folks often get priority seating and all, but what about us regular stiffs, can't even offer us a drink FFS? I try not to base my reviews on a single bad visit, especially having had a few great nights there...hence, the 2 stars instead of one. Having said that, I'll never go back again, so crappy was the experience.

Yelp
Sunday 3pm, this place was on fire! Bigger crowd than expected, probably because of Football season. It was awesome nonetheless. I'll be back unannounced soon, and see what the vibe is like during primetime.

Yelp
I've visited this bar several times now, so my review is based on not just one experience. First, let me preface this review with the fact that the bar staff, kitchen and security are outstanding and give a welcome feel to its patrons. After only a few visits, I was recognized and made to feel like a long time regular there. The problem is with the incredibly rude an unprofessional karaoke KJ who serves on Wednesday nights. I've been to karaoke bars and clubs globally, and never have I experienced such a deplorable, rude and self centered KJ as the one who host's Wednesday nights at the Firefox room. my first visit there, the KJ had the unbelievable idea to vocally advertise the bars pizzas served IN THE MIDDLE OF MY SONG! I found this to be beyond belief and although he apologized afterwards, a true professional would have never done such a thing to a customer during their song. Another aggravating feature about this individual, was that despite a rather long cue of singers, he decided to take the liberty of interjecting himself into the line up to sing himself and playing random music between guests, prolonging and already excessive long wait time to sing. Customers who go to sing karaoke go to do just that, not hear pipe music between singers or to hear the KJ sing when he wishes to! He's supposed to be there for the customers, which was clearly not this KJ's s objective. I also noticed he placed favored guests over others, skipping those who had waited for their rightful turn at the mike. Tonight, was the final straw of unethical and inexcusable behavior and cause for my NEVER RETURNING TO THE FOX FIRE ROOM AGAIN. My girlfriend and I decided to sing a love song duet and for some reason, after we started, THE KJ DECIDED TO SING WITH US!! We did not want him to, nor asked and it was a LOVE SONG! Seriously? Perhaps he thought he was going home with us for a threesome, because there is nothing to support why he took the liberty of taking away the enjoyment of a couple signing to one another. absolutely and withiut question, the WORST KJ I've ever witnessed and one which has convinced this patron to never return again. Eventually, he will be singing to only himself if he continues to disregard patrons as I witnessed and experienced him do. a KJ is their for the bars patrons, we don't want him to sing, play canned music, or include himself in other people's songs. You are there to serve your patrons, not your self centered interests and ego. just unconscionable!

Yelp
I was introduced to this bar by My dear friend Manfred, may he RIP. It's a great spot to hang out with a chill crowd .

James M.

Yelp
Verily, on Thursday morns at the Foxfire Room, Brooks, the barkeep, doth attend to a motley crew of revelers most prodigious in their proclivities. His mirthful disposition and benevolence doth engage the entire assembly in discourse most communal. Bawdy jests and ribaldry, of a carnal nature, do pervade the atmosphere without respite. Furthermore, his custodianship of a splendid jukebox doth resonate through the chamber. He transforms this humble tavern into a haven, a sanctuary, nay, a hearth for all who enter. A place of true distinction, and Brooks, the heart and soul thereof.

Yelp
Bring you mood, but leave the tude... a red light special dive bar with wall to wall wood paneling... Karaoke twice a week (I believe) and some of the best drink prices in town $5 wells... loaded Jack & Coke... clearly not too light with the pours either. They don't serve food, but all outside food is welcome including food from the food trucks that past through and park in the back (where parking is) and also the entrance as well as the patio. Mixed crowd here (semi-diverse)... have yet to have a single problem (knock on wood)... and been here a handful of times. Side Note: Uber and Lyft seem to have easy access and indication that the back entrance is where most get picked up.

Yelp
Hand down THE best bar in Los Angeles. Bartenders/security and the regulars are like one big friendly family, they have dart machines that you can play people online anywhere in the world with video livestream, and they pour up VERY strong drinks. Basically the Kibitz room of the valley but with top of the line dart machines and karaoke. This true SFV time capsule is your new watering hole....

Yelp
I drive by the Foxfire Room on a weekly basis and have always been curious about the 70s-vibe wood paneling and cushy Seats. I know they have Karaoke Sunday nights via "Sign Me Up" Karaoke and wanted to check it out since my boyfriend loves to sing! They have ample, free parking in back and we walked right in from the back door around 8:45. We got some Coors lite and a ginger ale (for me) and the place is so packed, it was hard to find seating but did and watched the TVs while chatting. Everyone was having a good time and seemed like they were in post party mode, the patrons seemed to know each other. They also enjoyed the dartboards for extra fun! I was hoping Karaoke would start at 9 because in reality, I had to get up early the next morning. But no, it started at 9:45 and the sound quality wasn't super. Boyfriend was able to sing around 10:30 at least and Adam the KJ was kind to him (he seems fun)! All in all, if I need to go back, I would - definitely a cute, neighborhood hole in the wall!

Yelp
Foxfire room is the classic definition of a dive bar (For the record, dive bar is not a derogatory term, it is a style of bar). This place is old school and it's fantastic. The smell of stale cigarettes permeates the entire room, with its dark oak paneling and red vinyl booths. How many Perps did Columbo annoy at the Foxfire? How many drinks did Manix, Barnaby Jones and Jim Rockford have together at the Foxfire? If Quinn Martin Productions had a bar, this would be it! This place is a time portal to the 70's and beyond. No food, no frills, just good stiff drinks and an atmosphere that allows you to let your guard down by the 2nd round. I'm a huge fan of the Foxfire Room!

Amy T.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in, we knew we had found a great spot!! I love this place! Good people, fun atmosphere, and really Great staff!!!!

Deb E.

Yelp
It's almost 2020 and the place still rules. Cheap drinks, 70's ambiance and bartender Jodi! She had some great stories about her time in Vegas in the late 70's. Never change Foxfire.

Charlie J.

Yelp
This place is an amazing neighborhood bar. The servers are friendly , the beer is cold and I could go on and on.

Yelp
This is one of the last good dive bars in Sherman Oaks/Studio city area. It's a great lowkey spot to meet a friend for a drink that's not boogie or over priced. Drinks are strong, environment is simple. Classic. Convenient parking lot in the back. Jodi is a very special woman (the bartender) talking to her automatically puts a smile on your face. On the weekends it's also a great place to chill with friends and get lit. There are games and plenty of seating.

Korrine V.

Yelp
Love this place!! Reasonable prices and an overall fun crowd. Jody makes a killer gin gimlet!! Stop in you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
Great dive bar with an old school vibe. I have lived around this bar for over 20 years. I always wanted to go try it out and we finally did. Wish we would of done it a long time before as it's a great old school bar. We will be back for sure
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
Here's the deal. In town for two nights and my buddy brings me here for karaoke on a Sunday night. We get there about 930... karaoke started at 9. We both got on the list. Were told we were 25 songs away. Yikes, but ok. Midnight rolls around; we ain't even five away from singing, and the DJ tells us it's still another 30 minutes. We left. Now, let me tell you that at least 5 people sang twice, and a couple even three times before we got up once. Wha?? Playing favourites is not cool. Bartenders were cool enough, and the drinks were fine, but that dang karaoke mess had us livid. Three hours is no where near 25 songs.

Erik T.

Yelp
So I came back to Foxfire and totally forgot about my previous review. Someone reminded me about the review and I couldn't help but order a Michelada from Brian. It was better than I remembered. I highly recommend asking Brian to make this delectable treat. He is scholar of beverages. He can make anything. I implore you to inquire about some of his specialties.

Yelp
I Had A blast Yesterday Night There. Very chill bar. The ambiance is cool and people are pretty nice. Cocktails are good and cheap. ( $10 for a vodka cranberries and a Long Island ). What a good surprise !

Alicia D.

Yelp
I recently started coming here and I think Mark,Brian and Debbie are awesome!!! Great drinks! Great atmosphere and ambiance . The customers are super friendly too!!
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
The regulars and Wayne, the bartender, made an otherwise dull Friday night at a dive bar in The Valley a pretty jolly one. I rolled in at 6 and didn't leave until after midnight. Darts were the main attraction, other than alcohol, which is the obvious one. Top it off with a cast of colorful characters, and there's nothing more entertaining! Gets packed towards the later hours, Karaoke on Wed/Sun, and they take cards!
google avatar

Bradley P.

Yelp
Yeah this place is the best. It's a classic. The way a bar should be, without any frills. Some old booths to sit in and maybe a dart board or something. The entry is around back through the parking lot. There are plenty of available parking spots most of the time too. I've never had trouble getting a drink in there, usually pretty quickly.
google avatar

Brenda D.

Yelp
Weird spot lol but fun, nonetheless. The crowd it attracts is an array of characters. You got your old, your young, your hip, your weirdos, Etc. whatever lol. The drinks are good. Great prices. The bartenders are very nice and full of customer service. Big tv's. Dart game. Jukebox. I always seem to come back.
google avatar

Travis H.

Yelp
A true dive bar. I was actually surprised at how the diverse the crowd was here. Looking for drunk ladies singing karaoke? Foxfire's got it. Looking for a bearded hipster in plaid? Foxfire's got it. Looking for a bearded guy who looks like he works on motorcycles for a living? Foxfire's got it. Looking for unsolicited advances from other patrons? Foxfire's got it. The drinks are suuuuuper cheap, which is awesome. I actually really like this place, and would go back.

Yelp
I've passed Foxfire Room several times without even realizing it was there. A friend suggested we meet up there and I had to Google it only to find out it was literally twenty yards from another place I visit often. I'm also a bit of a sucker for movie locations and PTA used this as the bar where William H. Macey hangs out in Magnolia. I got there fifteen minutes before my friend did so I asked the bartender, a pretty nice guy named Alec, for a Hef on tap and sat back to watch the Dodgers game at the bar. It's a little place with a jukebox and two electronic dartboards in the corner with tables lining one wall and a bar lining the other. It's basically every dive bar you've ever been to without the pool table. It kind of had that locals vibe when I first arrived but that wears off shortly. When my friend got there I had another Hef and made friends with a couple other people at the bar. A chick named Megan and some Canadian guy, both of them were very cool. If they're representative of the bar regulars I'm most certainly up for checking them out on a slightly busier night. It wasn't exactly thumping at eight on Thursday (but why would it be?). - This part is an update but I didn't think it was worth an actual update... I was waiting for the bus one day in front of Foxfire and walked in to ask if I could fill up my water bottle. The bartender, I want to say her name was Lisa but I could totally be making that up, was really nice. There was also a local lady and another guy who were just super friendly and welcoming. They encouraged me to come back and hang out when I could and I don't know... it inspired me to share. Heh. This place is a gem in a city filled with trendy, hipster ass bag establishments.

Yelp
This place is super divey and great bar for a date or a fun time with friends. The bartender is super suave and likable. The place is small but on the night we came it wasn't packed so we got seating at the bar. The drinks are a good price and with plenty of alcohol. Cool chill bar if you want to come and enjoy time with your friends. There's a few games to play that are definitely fun while drinking lol

Andrew M.

Yelp
While searching for things to do in the area, we had looked into seemingly easy to like places and found a guy with a bun / hipster crowd. We are not that, so we were hopeful with the dive bar status of the Fox Fire Room. It's now one of my favorite places anywhere. Ideal friendly atmosphere and cozy decor. All the bartenders are attentive, remember who you are, and make the experience inviting. It reminds us of our favorite watering hole from our hometown, something that's lacking where we live now. Seems like there are several regulars which is easy to understand, and a fairly diverse crowd compliments that. The cocktails are free pour and get you to your destination with a quickness. They have a decent beer selection and several people seemed content with their wine selection. The AMI jukebox has virtually every song one could think of and an app to order with. It shuffles continuously even if no one has purchased songs. Back entrance is what everyone uses, the front entrance is locked in the evening. Pizzeria across the street is convenient to grab something to eat, delivery to the bar is common. If getting slices it might be good to know they literally pile the toppings on after it's made and reheat. It can make for an uncontained meal, but a knife and fork would help that. We ended up going back on the second night as it was the best thing on the list. In its business model, it would be hard to imagine somewhere better suited to fill the need.

Yelp
Great bar I went there after wedding for after wedding party it was the best bar ever it is awesome I deafly will go there again.
google avatar

Kristin H.

Yelp
One of my favorite dives in the valley! Strong and cheap drinks. The people are always friendly. Music selection is on par!
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
I liked this place because it was relatively quiet, and had decent prices. It is definitely a dive bar, so dark and dingy is what you should expect. There are some locals that are off their rockers that frequent this joint, but they will more than likely leave you alone. One of them walked away mumbling in drunken disgust when he overheard me talking to my friend about some historical events, saying something along the lines of me re writing history. Dont know what he thinks happened in history, but he clearly does not agree with the facts. In any case, the place was pretty cool, I'll probably be going back there at some point.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
Foxfire Room is the place to be for Monday night karaoke!! I'd never been here, but I was really pleasantly surprised. Good, stiff drinks, 60,000 karaoke songs, AND.... Guinness on tap. We had a blast, the dj was awesome and really encouraged us to get up and sing. No one felt self conscious, it was a very cool eclectic crowd with all age ranges.
google avatar

Carley C.

Yelp
Love the spot! My neighborhood bar the bartender is always the nicest super friendly super fast service very good drinks the prices are amazing and very inexpensive a great place to just go hang out and catch a good vibe love playing darts at this bar such a good vibe
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
First of all, the main reason I ever went here is because the Foxfire is also known as The Smiling Peanut thanks to a little movie that was shot there called Magnolia. This alone makes it worth the trip (for me at least). A Mickey Rourke movie called Barfly was also shot here, but whatever. Aside from this, there are 2 dart boards and a jukebox full of.. music. Not the greatest music, but entertaining music. The drinks are cheap as all hell. They have 2 of the little bar game tap screen things which I love. And of course karaoke, which is always entertaining due to the variety of people involved. There are the regulars that all know each other and dedicate songs to one another, there are the seasoned professionals, and there are the tone-deaf drunks. I prefer the latter.
google avatar

Osmar A.

Yelp
I came here for a show and boy did I get one. The cougars and cougar bait stories are true. I've been here twice. First time it was an amazing time watching the crowd. People there were cool and the music was not that bad. Yes, there was a lot of older ladies having fun, but there was an abundant amount of cougar bait stalking the predators. It should be the other way around. Anyways, good times. Second time, wow! The place totally changed from a tab bit classy to trashy and raunchy. There was a lot of cougars on site, there was a lot of hookers as well. I even saw a pimp walk in with his girls like he owned the place. The bar also wanted a deposit for our moscow mules that we order and that was strange. I guess people are stealing these copper cups?! Any who, I still had a great time with my friends here people watching. $10 cover, guys must have a collard shirt to attract a sugar mama. Sad to see close its doors at the end of Jan 2016.
google avatar

Evan L.

Yelp
The consummate local bar. Walking in, the bar will be packed with regulars - the bartenders are friendly and foment conversation and laughs amongst all patrons. The lighting is dim, the drinks are inexpensive and yeah - it's a little dated, but there's the charm. Definitely a good spot for the locals.
google avatar

Yelp
Why didn't I come here earlier in life? Oh, yeah. Probably because I was younger and dumber than I am now. This dive is pretty amazing. Stiff drinks, personable patrons, and nice tenders coupled with a smooth & easy vibe. I went on a Sunday night and they had karaoke going. I'm not much of a singer, but throw a couple drinks at me and I'll start butchering anything in my vocal range. I'm really bummed that I won't be able to frequent this place much in the future, but I'm hoping some of my illegitimate children will.
