The 7 Best Jacksonville, Florida Diners | Eater Miami

"Those seeking a traditional diner should visit Fox Restaurant in Jacksonville’s Avondale neighborhood. While there’s often a weekend wait, it’s worthwhile. The interior features an array of posters, pictures, and children’s drawings. Offering all-day diner favorites like French toast, omelets, and sandwiches, many locals tout Fox’s southern-style biscuits as among the city’s best. Order the griddled biscuits for a delicious twist; this technique crisps the edges while keeping the inside buttery and soft."

First time visiting, and it was great. Our waitress Alex was great. My wife had a bacon and egg sandwich with a side of sausage gravy. I told our waitress Alex I'd like an omelet and it was her choice. Food came out in no time, and I was very happy with her choice, which was The Dusty Hill. My wife enjoyed her sandwich, and my omelet was packed with flavors. Everything was great from the time we walked in until we left. It's a popular place as we were leaving. There was a line waiting for great food.

The Fox Restaurant was FANTASTIC! The wait is worth it if busy as there's plenty to see and read while you enjoy the upbeat music. The omelettes are themed and delicious! The contents are cubed for easy scooping and eating. I got the Greek omelette and drizzled the vinaigrette on top with home fries and it was delicious 😋. Chandy was sweet, informative, and genuinely appeared to enjoy her job. The manager was all smiles and respect in a relaxed way. The vibe is relaxing and great for conversation and family 10/10 will come again!

Food was worth the hype. It's so simple but so fresh and delicious. The service is funny. They are so care free. Whatever man type attitude. Don't expect to feel like your at a 5 star restaurant. Be ready to feel like your at your best friends house and he is cooking you some fire grub for the munchies.

This was my first time there and I was pleasantly surprised. This is an old style Cafe with a throwback to the 60s and early 70s style. You had booths down one side and on the other a bar with stools. Very reminiscent of the old days of the Walgreens that had the cafe. The staff and the waiters were very courteous. I had two eggs corned beef hash wheat toast and grits. It was cooked like I asked, service was fast. Excellent food. You can't beat the price. I'm going back again this week I think I'm going to make this my regular breakfast place. I tried to get there once before but when we got around 8:30 there was a line at the door, if there's a line at the door you know it's going to be good. I also like the music that played. 40s 50s 60s and 70s music 🎶. A big thumbs up to this restaurant 👍

My new favorite breakfast spot. Everything was 10 out of 10. Yes in Jacksonville. Lol the best biscuits and omelets just like make it home. 🤤 I got the somebody's man omelette.. with the jerk chicken and black beans. Yum! Coffee was yummy too. Mom and pop vibes which I love. It's definitely a must try.

Google
The food was so excellent. The portions were so large and tasty. The service was wonderful. I felt right at home from the time I walked in the door. The French Toast meal was excellent. Their drip coffee was hot and flavorful. The omelettes were light and fluffy. Go give them a try!

Google
Not a bad little diner. Food is VERY basic. Nothing special that makes it sick out. The atmosphere was great though. All the servers and the manager were very upbeat. Very small, quaint place. The interior could use an update, but that's just my opinion 😀

Google
This has kind of old diner vibe. Came here close to closing around 1 pm on Sunday so after rush. Got service and table very quickly, however on a weekend I have seen a line out the door waiting when it opens, so choose your time wisely! The service and food was delicious. I had a classic strawberry waffle and was just what I wanted. Service was great. They order and serve fast and I didn’t have a problem with that at all!

Yelp
It was a Thursday morning around 9:30 and it was standing room only. In fact we had to wait outside and were the first in line (outside). It took about 25 minutes before we finally got seated, but I will give the owner kudos for continually checking on us from time to time while we waited and letting us know how much longer it would be before we got seated. The wait was worth it. I had biscuits and gravy with a side order of crispy bacon. It was all very satisfying and delicious. The endless coffee hit the spot. The old style diner played older music and made one feel super comfortable. There's bar seating as well as booths and tables inside. There's also a couple of small tables with seating outside, but in Florida's heat and humidity it's nice to sit inside this time of year. 5 stars for great food and exemplary service. Check them out, and get there early!

Yelp
Great retro diner in Avondale. When you step inside, it feels like you're thrown back in time as if you're at a NYC or New Orleans diner with friendly staff. You can sit at the countertop in front of the grill. But my favorite part is that they serve the entire menu for breakfast. So you can order chili cheese fries if you wanted to start your day. Heads up: they don't serve alcohol so no mimosas. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Old school diner vibe and food. Sat at the counter. Wait staff knew customers names. Food was as expected. I had the corned beef hash with eggs and rye toast with a side of fruit. Coffee was only so so but that's how I feel about most coffee served in restaurants.
google avatar

Shan T.

Yelp
My favorite go to diner. I'm a sucker for their chili with a grilled cheese sandwich! Comfort food in the exact right way. Teen enjoys the blueberry waffles with fresh fruit. Fruit is always a good mix and not simply the cheap melons. Place is killer with the vibes! The man at the door is by far the coolest hostess to exist. He makes every moment worth the wait; A riot of awesome waitstaff at this place! Every employee makes this special. Parking for this place can be dicey. Usually street side parking is available down Ingleside or Riverside and is a short walk across the street from the restaurant.

Yelp
What a fine! We were in the area and stumbled across the Fox restaurant. Ian, the owner happened to be there, I get the feeling he is there every day, and was beyond friendly. Our server,Sarah, provided incredible insight into the menu items. She has worked there for eight years! The food here is some of the best food I have ever had at a breakfast restaurant in my life. You could eat the gravy straight out of the bowl with nothing else it is that good! The French toast is some of the best French toast I've ever had. All of their food is fantastic and you cannot go wrong. The Fox restaurant has a family atmosphere and an old-school diner vibe to it. We will definitely be going back many, many, many times!

Yelp
Love this original-Avondale place! Only a few booths and spots at the bar; therefore, you wait in a line outside the door! But no frets... the line moves smoothly & quickly! So many great brunch choices: corned beef hash, brioche French toast, omelets, etc! There are lunch choices as well. The decor is classic, eclectic 1950s. PS - The coffee is great! Plus, the waitresses are so attentive!

Yelp
I'll just say first off. I have no idea why this place isn't more popular. That being said I've heard about it for years and finally got around to trying it. When I first arrived I immediately felted welcomed because it felt like a diner with super great energy. The place was clean and just felt really at home. The servers or whomever was behind the bar asked me how many was eating in and told me to choose where I would like. I asked and pointed to confirm is a certain table was ok and they agreed. Upon sitting down we were promptly greeted and asked if we would like drinks. Those did not take long at all to come out. Then we ordered and were checked on at least once before our food arrived. Let me just say, I order scrambled eggs soft everywhere I go and very very few places have gotten them right. I didn't mention any of this and didn't even say anything more than just scrambled eggs soft. My eggs may not look like it from the picture but they were perfect! They were soft scrambled with a little runny in them exactly how I like them. My cheese grits were pretty normal and great. But the pancakes, they were way better than I was expecting. They were so good that I actually finished them all. As usually I only finish half and don't care to finish the rest. Absolutely can't wait to come back and try more items.

Yelp
We haven't been to The Fox in a long time and my son suggested it for breakfast for Mother's Day weekend. We arrived early and had a short wait for a table. There's always a line outside so that tells you something right there! We were waited on right away and we ordered the eggs and corned beef hash (scrambled for hubby and over easy for my son) and I had the Ortega omelette. The corned beef hash is made in house and it is fantastic! I will order it the next time we go. The Ortega omelette was delish as well and tasted so fresh with the fresh tomatoes on top. I would absolutely get it again. The biscuits were yummy and the grits were nice and creamy and had a perfect consistency. The weakest thing was the coffee, literally. But we won't hold that against them, ha ha.

Zack P.

Yelp
Literally the best breakfast ive probably had in a while. I got the steak and eggs The steak was top tier cooked to perfect medium rare and eggs were fluffy, you also get what you pay for here. The manager and employees are nice and I love the atmosphere. It was quick and no wait and they were pretty busy. Highly highly recommend

Yelp
First time here, great diner atmosphere but could use some upkeep or a refresh. The back of my side of the booth caved in whenever I sat back too far. Came for breakfast and all three of us enjoyed our omelettes. The pesto on mine was a surprisingly good addition to all the vegetables, cheese and egg. The biscuit was big, fluffy and buttery. The potatoes were cooked well but had an unusual faint taste of cinnamon. The coffee was fantastic, always happy with a place that makes a great cup of regular coffee. Service was great, our waters and coffees were never empty.

Yelp
The Restaurant used to be referred to as City Hall West since many elected officials would meet there for breakfast. The employees used to be friendly and courteous and at least be cordial. Now, the restaurant is outdated, a Man at the front counter asks "How many"? Without even a hello or welcome. Once seated, a waitress walks by and says "what do you want to drink" and drops a menu on the table. She returns with a drink and asks "you know what you want"? I ordered a simple breakfast of eggs, grits and toast. The food was okay but you typically eat at diners to enjoy the nostalgic setting and friendly atmosphere. If you want a basic breakfast and don't care about the overall experience then you may try this. This is nowhere close to what this diner once was.

Yelp
Went for the 1st time after years of living here. I know I'm late. But my friend advocated for the BLFGT served with blue cheese crumbles and a fried egg. I gotta say it is tasty. I loved the sauce on the sandwich it has great flavor and kick from the horseradish. And we got a side of biscuit and it was wise choice. Carbs on carbs. How do you go wrong.
google avatar

Cameria G.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere was absolutely adorable! The manager and staff were fast and friendly! We look forward to another brunch date here
google avatar

Ashton R.

Yelp
This bustling little diner in Avondale always has a long line of eager patrons! Friendly staff, good food, and a great cup of coffee! No reservations or call aheads here, but the line outside moves quickly with consistent check ins from staff (and even a few bubbles blown our way by one waiter)! If you're looking for quick, tasty food at a good price, look no further. I'll definitely be stopping by again soon!

Yelp
There was a line outside of the restaurant for the indoor seating on a Sunday morning, but we didn't mind to take the last 2 outside seats. The food was ok, it took a little long to get it, but we didn't mind as it was lovely out. My Greek omelette was good. The fruit cup was kinda dull and had lots of bananas. Service was great, our drink were refilled timely.
google avatar

Whitney D.

Yelp
This isn't our first time but it has been over a year. We arrived around 12:30 (Sunday) and got lucky and didn't have to wait. Ellen greeted us and got our drink orders while we looked over the menus. We ordered and didn't have to wait long for our food. Our complaints: friendly staff, really attentive, too much bacon, food was cooked perfectly, really cool and fun decor. I got bacon cheeseburger with provolone and fries with side of ranch. My boyfriend got the French toast breakfast with cheesy eggs, too much bacon lol, cheesy grits. We took the extra bacon home to our pup. *We don't expect staff to be perfect and have a smile on their face at all times. They are humans working a hard job dealing with entitled ppl.
google avatar

Kiera M.

Yelp
I've eaten at the Fox several times now and the breakfast is always delicious. The pancakes are not like any I have had before. They are fluffy and sweet almost like a cake and you only need a little syrup for it to be even more delicious. The bacon is always crispy and salty. I've tried the French toast which is good as well. The only breakfast item that lacks in my opinion is the turkey sausage which has been very dry. Skip that and get the bacon or regular sausage. The owner is great and takes his restaurant seriously and will come to recognize you if you visit 2+ times which is a nice feeling that I haven't experienced anywhere else in Jax. The restaurant is classic movie style diner which of course means it could use some updating but that's part of the charm. Just don't crowd around his front door and you will be fine :).

Adeline L.

Yelp
The Fox is my favorite breakfast spot. It's an upgraded diner with the best service. From the owner greeting people and making conversation while you're standing in line (which moves fast, I promise) to the servers who remember that I always get a family man omelette with no cheese, it's the neighborhood spot to go. Not to mention the quirky decor and good music! Definitely recommend the omelettes, home fries, waffles (soo good), and the biscuits, which are fluffy and soft.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
A little bit of an outside wait for breakfast but the (I assume) owner comes out to greet you. The Jaco and the honky tonk were yummy. Homemade biscuits very good! Good music and "eye candy" on the walls!

Keidy C.

Yelp
From beginning to end our meal at Fox was terrific! Our waitress was quick and efficient as was the seating process. You wait to be called from the line that forms outside but our wait was actually really quick considering the long line that had formed. I ordered breakfast (corn beef hash with eggs) and I wasn't disappointed. Our waitress mentioned that the corned beef hash is made in house so I couldn't resist. It's classic diner food which is what we were looking for that morning. Loved it!
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot! I think they could use a better quality bread for the French toast but it's still decent. The quantity is good. The bacon, eggs, & fruit cup were great. My friend got the home fries and those were stellar.
google avatar

Haley L.

Yelp
If you have been missing out on north east USA diners this is the place to go! I felt like I was back home with the friendly wait staff and delicious food. I will dream about the French toast and all of the yummy sides I got.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Had a delicious omelet, and the service was fantastic. It is a really cute little diner, and I enjoyed the familiar throwback feel. Only downside is the noise level. I was meeting a friend who is deaf and speaks very softly to avoid being too loud and it was extremely challenging to have a conversation. The Fox strikes me as an excellent place to go with kids who are always too loud for a quieter venue.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! The décor reminds me of my childhood. The food is perfect. Every single one of the staff are amazing. And the owners are the nicest people you could ask for. You have to get there very early if you do not want to wait, but the line signifies that the food is worth it. The portions are large and the prices are very reasonable. When I want breakfast out, this is my go to place. Love it and keep up the great work!

Yelp
Decided to stop in at the Old fox restaurant. Haven't been here in many years. I figured I would give it a second chance since the first time was not very rememberable. I ordered a big waffle with strawberry toppings, and when it came out, the strawberries were heated up and the waffle became nothing but mush. I'm familiar with getting waffles at multiple different restaurants and they ask if you want strawberries or blueberries and they are on top of them but they're not heated up like hot soup. They're just cold our room temperature fruit so when the waitress came and asked me how everything was, I decided to let her know what my opinion was on the waffle as a customer that way it could help other customers in the future, know that their toppings, hot like mush. She already got an attitude for the fact that I was bringing it up to her since she was already in a mood, the first time she came to the table you can tell something was off, so I just let it go, but when I reported my opinion on the waffle, she went back there to her manager. He came out here with his arms crossed, already presenting a hostile attitude, not acustomer service service attitude . He came over here and said I heard there was a problem what was wrong with his arms crossed I told him he looked at me like I was crazy because I said the topping were completely stinging hot and so well that's how we do it and I said OK I don't want nothing free. I don't want nothing replaced. I'm just letting you know my opinion so that you can put on your menu Steamed toppings for waffles that way it doesn't cause a confusion and will prevent more negative reviews. But because of his attitude and the staff members attitude, I decided to go ahead and give them a review instead of just letting it go and giving them a great review and overlooking it. My only advice to anyone that is stopping into to get a quick bite catch up with family or friends or just have a quick lunch or breakfast . Prepare to have a side of attitude if there's anything wrong with your order. You would be better off going to another establishment thanks for listening.

Yelp
Finally made it to the Fox. I dig local spots like this. A good ol greasy spoon. The food is just ok, so I had to give it a 4 instead of 5. Sorry. It also took a long time for standard grub. But I will give you that the place was slam packed. But still... lol The host dude that comes outside to shuttle people to seats based on party size - super cool. Great vibes. Checks on you occassionally thru the meal. People like that keep patrons like me coming back. The coffee needs help in there though. Ouch. Bacon is on the soggy side. Too much butter on the toast. Yeah, it is a diner. All is well. Oh, and the prices are reasonable so much respect on that. I will be back! At some point. haha
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
May have just found my new favorite diner! Happily greeted when we walked in, staff really made us feel welcome. Restaurant is very clean and you can tell everyone cares. My omelet was about the best I've ever had and the hubby really enjoyed his salad. Overall, we will be back!
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
My absolute #1 go-to breakfast or lunch spot in Avondale. Inexpensive but quality food served efficiently by super friendly people in a casual local diner setting. My top choice is the Larry David, but the burgers are among the best in town. Great old school breakfast featuring the classics. Seriously, there are no bad choices at The Fox. And don't let the line on weekends scare you off as it moves quickly.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
An absolute must frequent diner! The food is fantastic, the retro vibes are really enjoyable and the staff is excellent. Run, don't walk to this spot.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Waffle House of Avondale. Go to Southern Grounds, Brick or Pine Grove deli. Much nicer people and better food.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
We were visiting from Indiana and decided to stop by the fox after finding them on yelp. Great food, and fast service. The prices are excellent especially in such a hip side of town. We loved the old school music and the art on the walls. This place was very eclectic. The food servings were a great size and you cannot go wrong if you order the biscuits. Give them a try and support local.

Yelp
THE BEST BREAKFAST IN JAX!!!!! If you're looking for a delicious breakfast food, an entertaining owner who loves his restaurant, and a good atmosphere... go to The Fox!!!! Every server and chef is friendly and accommodating AND attentive. Love the owner and energy he brings to the place!

Colleen B.

Yelp
This place really is a gem. Every employee was pleasant and kind and the service was speedy! The eggs were perfect and honestly it was one of the best biscuits I've ever had. Cute inside with a bunch of drawings from kids that have eaten there before. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Austin S.

Yelp
Dropped by and it was very busy, but was able to get a seat at the bar. Everyone was very nice and service was fast. It was $16 for breakfast, soda, and an extra biscuit to try. I got the Super Fox sub bacon for sausage. It's very chill here and would love to come early when they just open and I definitely want to give them another review. Bacon was nice and smokey. I also really liked how fluffy the biscuit was (and it wasn't burnt so that was great!).

Sandra N.

Yelp
Excellent food & service! We had 6 people in our party and enjoyed eggs, bacon, sausage, pork chops, pancakes, biscuits, grits, fruit, coffee and OJ! It got quiet when we received our food so you know it was goooood! The owner was very welcoming and came by to say hello! The best part was being their for the daily visit from one of their doggie friends who gets a piece of bacon when they past by the restaurant on her walk with her owner....so cool! There's only street parking but that won't stop us...We will definitely return!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
First time and will not be the last, service was great as well as the food. Want it to be the go to Breakfast stop on Sunday. Staff are great as the price points and servings.
google avatar

Dani P.

Yelp
The menu would benefit from more options for appetizers. It's a small hole in the wall with an open kitchen so that's quaint however, seating at the bar feels narrow. Server was really sweet and service was so fast! Employees were planning on going out for a drink after work and that warmed my heart to see coworkers enjoying each others company. Their funny banter prevented me from burying myself in my phone. The walls are decorated by cool stickers and the handwashing sink says "EMPLOYEES MUST CARVE 'SLAYER' IN THEIR FOREARM BEFORE RETURNING TO WORK" I thought that was cool. This place is hip. The owner and manager complimented my Charlie Brown tattoos and we had a whole conversation of the origin of Snoopy and the staff Halloween plans and later about talent in tattoo artists and styles. I know that has nothing to do with the eating experience but I was impressed with the willingness to interact with people who will likely return due to the comraderie. When the owner of an establishment is fully involved with customers- that's rare to see. I left my wallet in my car and though I was embarrassed, server was super chill about it and upon returning, the owner ran my credit card for me since she was assisting a guest at the time. Great place. I will return.

B B.

Yelp
Place was very nice, service and food was good. I only had breakfast there but reminded me of a diner you find in most cities. I would definitely recommend and would return if back in town.
google avatar

Christos L.

Yelp
Great spot for a tasty honest breakfast or lunch . Today I had the Nam burger and it was great, with chorizo and an egg. My wife had and loved the Mediterranean salad with added chicken and bacon. The romaine lettuce was fresh and crispy and she thoroughly enjoyed it. We both had a cup of chili which was good (not amazing but good). The service was great and the staff were working really well together. The place itself has a great home feel and hippie vintage feel and ambiance which works well for the neighborhood. We love the Fox and we return every time we are in the area.
google avatar

Bart S.

Yelp
Service was excellent. I usually enjoy breakfast there. Unfortunately this time the French toast was way undercooked. I'll still eat there.
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
Waiter was phenomenal! There was a little bit of a wait, but the service and food was well worth it.

Brooke Y.

Yelp
Great local joint been around 27 years I think? Owner came out and spent about 10 minutes speaking to us while waiting for a table. Food was fresh and service was great

Kaitlyn A.

Yelp
Decided to change things up and try this little spot for breakfast. Was definitely worth the drive from our area! The gentlemen behind the bar are hilarious and so friendly! Ask Chris for some jokes! It's a very small environment but it makes up with the big flavors from their food! Would definitely recommend to anyone in the riverside area!
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
It doesn't get much better than The Fox as far as delicious diners go! I enjoy everything I've ever had, but I'm mostly posting just to say that the waffle is always delicious and one of my very favorites! There's usually a bit of a wait on the weekends, but it's worth it to me. Great atmosphere and service, too.
google avatar

Tyrica Y.

Yelp
Quaint local restaurant with traditional breakfast. Stopped here in between business meetings downtown and the food was delicious. Traditional breakfast items, cooked fresh, and great service. Close to downtown Jacksonville and great for good eats.
google avatar

Devon G.

Yelp
Best breakfast in town!! Great options on the menu for all types of flavor cravings! The coffee is great as well and is always fresh. The atmosphere is calm and cozy. Even when The Fox is busy they somehow find you a table instantly!! It is always my first choice when it comes to a sit down breakfast in town.

Yelp
Welp! Sorry to say this Waffle House.... there's a new sheriff in town. Actually, they've been here, it's me that's just now discovering them. LMBO! This restaurant has won my heart and it was only the first visit. From great customer service to deliciously fresh breakfast with so many options of what many would consider be most simply ingredients. The OJ tasted sweet, and freshly squeezed; the eggs was cooked to perfection; the mounds of bacon... (I just need a moment of silence .) And the sausage patty... took me to food coma. Oh and the cinnamon raisin bread needs no introduction. #JezuzTakeTheWheel I was sure of what I wanted to try during this visit, the broad selection of omelets as mouthwatering but, I wanted to taste each of my breakfast foods separately and thought about how hunger I could possible have been. Final results: I ordered the Super Fox which comes with 4 eggs; 4 pieces of bacon, a sausage patty, and your choice of grits, breakfast hash, or fruit, and a biscuit or toast. Our waitress was super cool. She sat us in the "VIP" area. LOL! It wasn't VIP but, just by her saying it was made us feel super special. I love the vintage vibes of this restaurant. But, will be prepared to wait for a seat as everyone else loves this place too. So I have so that they're packed most of the time.
