I think Fox Theatre Atlanta is simply amazing and breathtaking! This is my first review of Fox even though I've been coming here since the first week that I moved to Atlanta in 2015.
We came here to see Fiddler On The Roof in mid-November. I've parked one of the parking lots only once, and it sure wasn't fun trying to leave the parking lot and the area because everyone else is trying to leave at the same time after a performance at Fox Theatre. Since then, we've only taken MARTA trains, and North Station is so located so close to the theater.
We got to Fox Theatre Atlanta early, and were able to walk around without a lot of people also walking around. The outside/entrance of the theater, inspired by Islamic architecture, provides just a hint of what is inside the venue, of which sections were inspired by Egyptian architecture. The marquee lights up, providing a preview of upcoming events. A box office right under the marquee is no longer used, but there are other windows that have been used for almost 100 years.
Entrances are staffed by security employees, and everyone entering must pass through metal detectors, then present their ticket. Just about everything in the building is either original or restored to look like it did when the theater was built. The carpeting is deep red with gold, and very detailed patterns, throughout much of the theater. Although most theater goers use the stairs, an old working elevator, complete with an elevator attendant who actually operates the elevator, is available. We took the elevator upstairs, and were able to enjoy the views of the theater from the upper level of the main hall. The stage looked small from up there, and the keyboardist was playing songs on the huge "Mighty Mo" pipe organ. The entire areas from the stage and upward, including the ceiling, were renovated to look like everything was outside in the open air, with blue lighting and projected moving white clouds on the ceiling, and the front face of the stage looking like it was part of the outside of a building, and this look carried throughout the other upper sides of the auditorium. Fox Theatre Atlanta has almost 5,000 seats, and just about all of the seats have a great view. The seats are comfortable. The only things that I could complain about are that the aisles are a little cramped, making it a tight squeeze when someone needs to get past your seat, and the theater's process of attempting to route everyone trying to get to the lowest level restrooms during intermission is a big fail.
During this visit, R and I found a long wall, that was just about full of pictures of and signed by celebrities who have performed at Fox Theatre throughout the years, near the upper level restrooms. Oh, and everything at the concessions stands are expensive, so just be prepared to pay high prices.
I loved coming here in mid-November 2021. This is a great venue, and Fiddler On The Roof was a great musical.
