Serpentine Closes After 13 Years of Packed Brunches and Beloved Burgers | Eater SF

"Halvorson’s catering company, Foxtail, grew from a single six‑foot table in a commissary kitchen into a massive operation based at the AIC North building across the street from Serpentine, at one point selling about 10,000 corporate meals a week and subsidizing the restaurant’s losses; the pandemic obliterated that events and office business (dropping revenue to roughly 10 percent of its prior level), so Foxtail pivoted to offering “virtual experiences,” custom‑branded curated food and drink boxes for corporate video conferences and distanced parties, and DIY meal kits to prepare at home — products that Halvorson says have been doing better than he expected." - Eve Batey

Coffee at Foxtail was surprisingly delicious, far better than I expected. The quality of the drinks really stood out—smooth, flavorful, and freshly prepared. Service was equally impressive. Even with a line stretching out the door, the staff moved quickly and kept everything organized without sacrificing friendliness. The space itself is cute and cozy, with décor that feels intentional and perfectly on theme. It’s the kind of place you actually want to sit and enjoy your drink, whether catching up with a friend or working on a laptop. Prices were fair for the quality—good value for what you’re getting. The only drawback is the limited indoor seating. It can be tough to find a spot if you come during busy hours, though the outdoor seating helps a bit when the weather’s nice. Still, I’d gladly come back again for both the coffee and the experience.

Google
I visited this location earlier this week and received a drink that was far too sweet. I politely asked for an extra shot of espresso to balance the flavor, not for the drink to be remade. While I was still standing there, the baristas began talking about me and my order, saying, “Of course the drink was sweet—she asked for both honey and hazelnut.” This comment felt unprofessional and unnecessary, and it made the experience uncomfortable and disappointing.

Katherine P.

Google
Overall, this coffee shop was in a good location, but it was loud and did not have many seating options. The matcha was too sweet, but they remade my drink when I explained my concern. It seemed like they had a lot of new coffee options, so it could be a good place to go in the area.

Jenna E.

Google
Coffee was very good, staff was nice. Croissant tasted like an airport croissant. would come back for the coffee and not the food. The outdoor area available is nice and could use some love - umbrellas/shade, plants.

Qingchen Y.

Google
I came to this location after my morning workout and treated myself to a refreshing iced cafe con leche made with oat milk. Everything about the experience was truly fantastic! In fact, I even indulged in an hour of reading a captivating chapter from a book. Their adorable fox-themed cups for hot beverages also added an extra touch of charm. It's a shame I didn't have the opportunity to sample their delectable-looking pastries, as my post-workout appetite was not quite there. Nevertheless, this place is excellent for enjoying top-notch coffee and leisurely moments, whether alone or with friends. I highly recommend it!

Colin R

Google
The barista was nice and on it, but the coffee (cappuccino) i.e. beans, coffee to foam ratio (all foam, no real milk, which is obviously what she's expected to do), and size weren't worth the drive or price.

NetSec N.

Google
Bring a jacket, this place is always cold. The inside is fairly small and often full. It can be loud inside, but that's not always the case. A couple baristas are pleasant, but most are indifferent.. there's no attempt at being friendly in my many experiences here.

Sara Y.

Google
I frequent this Foxtail almost every day and I'm a big fan. The baristas are so kind and make my day, and they have great coffee. They're pretty quick with orders and always make me smile! Only two things are that you might have trouble finding parking if you're running in for a quick pre-office pick me up, and it's not the best warm weather study spot because it has pretty limited indoor seating. My fav order is an iced honey oat latte or a raspberry rose tea with splenda! They have cold brew flights which are fun!

Yelp
I've been to Foxtail a couple times now and just love this place! They offer such a wide variety of coffees and teas, with just about every milk or add in you could think of. Not to mention, their food isn't too bad either. The interior is super cute with the best vibes. The service is always on point and I have found the staff to be very helpful. It is also kept clean, which I appreciate. Foxtail makes for an excellent study spot too, very good environment! As for their menu items I've tried, I have had nothing but good experiences. Their cold brew is definitely one of the best, creamiest cold brews I've ever had. It almost doesn't need milk it is so smooth with such a good flavor profile. I would highly recommend trying this if you are into cold coffees. I still need to try some of their syrups, but I am most intrigued by their sugar free cold foams. For the food, I've really enjoyed their croissants. Surprisingly fresh, buttery, and flakey, they won't disappoint. And heated up, game changer!! The chocolate one is super tasty and pairs perfectly with a coffee. All in all, I think Foxtail is a wonderful coffee shop in Gainesville. I'm so happy they opened one in midtown as I will definitely be frequented it more. Cannot wait to explore more of the menu!

Yelp
I normally don't complain but the sign says opens at 7am. It's disappointing when I arrive at 7:04 and the door is locked. On top of that the stagf seemed to ignore i was outside. With several options around i don't know if I would return.

Yelp
Overall good! Cute little coffee shop with a decent drink menu. Highly recommend ordering on the app, where you can see the full menu and customizations. Good place to bring your laptop and sit outside. The downside is that it's overpriced. A small cappuccino with nondairy will run you $7+. Price and menu-wise, it's pretty similar to Starbucks. The Gainesville location can get pretty busy and doesn't have a drive thru. If you arrive after 9am on a busier weekday morning you may not find a seat.
google avatar

Martina O.

Yelp
Popular coffee spot in town. Went there like middle of the day and there is a line. That is a good sign! Choose a seasonal drink, pretty tasty I never had them before. Pretty decent drinks and snack menu for a coffee place. Good location in middle Buttler's stores, restaurants, boutiques and there's the whole food market close by too. Small but got some seatings with WiFi And plenty charge stations. Definitely a casual ambience.

Yelp
Stopped in for an afternoon coffee. The inside is small and all the seats were filled with people working on their computer or catching up with friends. The space is very well decorated. The cold brew was one of the best I've had! Not acidic at all, super smooth and yummy. The coffee came out fast, they also had some pastries but we didn't try any this time. Will be back again!

Yelp
Rude rude rude! Whoever is taking orders this morning at the front is extremely unhappy with her job. My husband left feeling like completely inconvenienced her by ordering a plain coffee and cappuccino. In addition that would be ok if the coffee actually was good. Tastes very bitter and the cappuccino had zero foam. I would not recommend this at all for the price.
google avatar

Brett W.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and service! Only complaint about my first experience here is I just wish there was more seating because it was busy and full inside.
google avatar

Hayli Z.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop near other shops. I got a drink they had posted on their Instagram for the summer, which supposedly to be a sprt of layered drink but this didn't loom the same. It tasted ok, they are similar in proce to places like Starbucks. Nice staff, would come back to try some different non-coffee drinks.

Yelp
Visiting Gainesville for the first time and was looking for a good coffee in the area! Foxtail coffee offers variety of small baked goods as well! I bought the plain crossaint which was good and an Iced mocha latte which was also good! Small place and fast service!

William S.

Yelp
Cold, hot cup of coffee. I'm old fashioned, when I order a coffee I do not want it lukewarm .
google avatar

Pam F.

Yelp
Life is too short for bad coffee. I get it. Starbucks has trained people to drink burned coffee. There is another way. But not here. It's copying the bitter, unpleasant taste of the green awning. I like more taste, smooth flavors, delicious from first sip to last. This coffee just got stale. Sorry Foxtail. I'm not a fan.

Teresa M.

Yelp
I know all have the issue but the "large" size is laughable, especially for the cost. The latte was just ok (lacking flavor mostly water) Won't go again because then that's on me.
google avatar

Vyshak C.

Yelp
Every time I've gotten coffee here it has been made well and quickly. I have tried a few of their fall/winter specials, most recently a peppermint mocha, and I'll say it didn't quite match up to the standard competitor's peppermint mocha sadly. That being said, it's nice to have a coffee shop in Butler plaza when you are walking around on the weekends. Hope it gets enough traffic to make it!
google avatar

Henry K.

Yelp
Got the Iced Chai Latte with Pumpkin Cold Foam and it was soo creamy and smooth. As a big fan of chai, this would be a solid choice for a go-to drink. The 2 kings behind the counter were friendly and quick to finish our drinks. Inside, there are few seats in this cozy space. Definitely an inviting environment to study/work. There's more seating with small round tables outside, some of it shaded.
google avatar

Priscilla L.

Yelp
Small place, quick service, great coffee! Wifi available to sit inside or outside and get some work done on your laptop! I love that their is to-go parking which is usually open to pop in quickly for that morning coffee... 10/10
google avatar

Gabriela S.

Yelp
The coffee is alright, but man the girl taking orders said all of two words and looked entirely annoyed. It felt like going to the McDonald's drive thru and asking for extra bbq. I'll stick to my Starbucks.

Yelp
I was recently in Gainesville and looking for a spot for some breakfast, coffee, and to get a little work accomplished. Foxtail Coffee Co to the rescue! I came here mid-morning on a weekday. They have your standard coffee shop menu (mochas, lattes, cappuccinos) as well as a few seasonal specialty coffees. I opted for the holiday cookie latte from the seasonal coffee menu, which is made with cookie butter and vanilla. They have milk alternatives, so I was able to get it made with almond milk. It was good, though I found the espresso a skosh more bitter than I typically prefer. For my breakfast, I was happy to see that they had options beyond the sweet treats in their bakery case (which all looked lovely, I just happen to prefer savory eats in the morning). I opted for their turkey sausage, egg, and cheese bagel. I think they make them in a panini press and it was hot and tasty. I appreciated sausage options beyond pork! Their space is small but squeaky clean. They have bar seating looking out the front window, a few tables inside, and outdoor seating as well. I was able to snag a spot at an indoor table and get some work done while I sipped. The service was absolutely lovely and the prices were reasonable. Get to it!

Yelp
On Sunday October 27th around 11:15 am, my friends and I visited the Foxtail in Gainesville next to Aerie and had a horrible experience for multiple reasons. When we arrived the line was relatively long and the employees working were only focused on online orders for about 30 minutes. Also, during this time we saw that one of the female employees was talking to a group of about 4 people asking them what they wanted to drink and "what milk/flavor" they wanted today. This group did not pay for their orders nor did they have mobile orders. Not only that but that same employee was handing equipment to this group of people to make/mix their own drinks. This group was also reaching over the counter to move around things and grab the flavor pumps. Not only did this employee pause the flow of the store but allowing outside personnel to touch the equipment is unsanitary and completely unprofessional. Due to this predicament, we ended up leaving the store at around 12:15 pm. Coffee service should NOT take that long. And after all of that, one of our drinks was incorrect and when asked to fix it she was incredibly rude and ended up making it wrong again so we just left with the second wrong coffee. I would advise, if you have a camera at this establishment, to check the day and time I mentioned (between 11:15 am - 12:15 pm). I'm hoping something can be done about this and I hope to hear back with a resolution.

Yelp
Excellent coffee! I dropped in here to grab an afternoon pick me up and I'm glad I did. I ordered the on-tap cold brew with vanilla and caramel already added in. With a bit of cream, it was delicious. The coffee was smooth and a medium roast. The transaction was quick and the workers were efficient. The shop is rather small, but there is plenty of outside seating.

Austin V.

Yelp
Foxtail is okay! The quality of drinks depends on how busy they are. The baristas also have the worst attitude, I've been a barista for like 8 years... I get it......... but to be in a bad mood every shift you're working is actually a problem, maybe consider another field
google avatar

Uma P.

Yelp
really love this one too. It's a smaller shop. It does have seating mostly facing the windows but again it's smaller and if you don't get there early I'm pretty sure it fills up. They do have outdoor seating but it is hot outside at this time. They have a large variety of coffees and food/pastries. Service is fast and I really loved their lavender vanilla latte which had great flavor. Prices are good. There is free parking as well. Located in an eye shopping area where you can go around after you get coffee and walk around. Overall I would recommend it, my only downside of it is just that it's not super spacious inside but if you just want to grab some coffee and a snack, it's a wonderful place to go.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Wow Aesthetics are amazing, this coffee shop is modern, but rustic as well I absolutely loved it. I mean if you're gonna pay $5 for coffee anyway might as well do it at a place that you can feel comfortable and cool. I have loved their coffee before and im happy they're in Gainesville definitely if you're in Butler wanting coffee choose these guys over Starbucks no competition. The ice cafe con leche was delicious.

Yelp
Foxtail Coffee Co. is a franchise I've personally enjoyed since discovering it in Orlando. They offer a wide variety of coffee brewed in different ways as well as loose leaf teas. Tucked away in the new butler plaza behind Cheese Cake Factory, it is a nice place to work on a laptop and be productive if you want a change of scenery. The aesthetic and ambiance is similar to most coffee shops with a mix of modern and rustic. There's small splashes of foxes imprinted around the cafe. I usually am not adventurous when it comes to coffee. I get latte with oat milk and a splash of mocha. One of the downsides about this place is the size of the location. I thought it would be bigger, but the capacity they can hold is about 22. Realistically two tables and a row of tabletops that are more so geared towards socializing than being productive. Regardless, I believe it's nice to add a staple to the coffee scene in a prime location for years to come.
google avatar

Alesa W.

Yelp
Tried this place in Orlando before it came to Gainesville and it's so yummy! I had the iced chai latte and it was incredible! I mean whoever made the drink, understood the assignment! I hate the inside is super small because the one I went to in Orlando was nice and spacious but nevertheless it was a beautiful day in Gainesville so we drank our drinks and walked around the area! Makes me happy that Gainesville is continuing to grow! I love it coming from a big city and being a big city girl, I'm here for the growth! You want to try something other than Starbucks, Go here!! I actually prefer more local coffees and local coffee spots better than Starbucks anyway! Great way to try new places and experience new things!

Yelp
I have been a fan of foxtail since a friend introduced me to it a few years ago in Orlando. Now anytime I am somewhere where they have one I stop by for a guaranteed good coffee. I was pleasantly surprised to find one in Gainsville. This was a great location small indoor seating area but had more options outside. Service was friendly and most important my coffee was excellent.
google avatar

Kyla M.

Yelp
I saved my opinion for this place until I has gone a few times: First the good: - Gainesville needs good, non-Starbucks, coffee shop options. I was excited to see them open. I love getting coffee and snacks and bringing my laptop to do some work. It's in a great area and I am happy to see more shops opening over here. - The coffee was really good and so was the quiche. All 3 times I visited, I got the cafe con leche and the jalapeño bacon quiche. - There are outlets everywhere on the tables so power is never an issue - The decor is really nice and modern. Now the "not-good": Size: It's pretty small. Inside, there are about 10 seats. I wish this place was 4 times this size. They would make a killing. I came to do work one day and left without purchasing anything since there were no seats. They added more seating outside, but I get hot after a while and the sun makes a glare on my screen. Price Point: I paid $14 for my large cafe con leche and quiche each time. My wallet let out a small scream but I asked it to be quiet since people were working . Burned Quiche: Today, I got a quiche (pictured in the review) and it was burned. I pointed it out to the barista and he literally threw his hands up and said he couldn't do anything about it because it gets cooked at a set temperature. He didn't offer any substitution or a solution. If this were my shop, I wouldn't want someone with this type of disposition representing my shop. This quiche is too expensive to be burned and nothing done about it. I'll probably still come back but I will keep my orders to beverages only that can't be burned.

Yelp
I have had before and liked it In Orlando.. so seeing now here in Gainesville it was a must stop. Grabbed banana bread a large iced matcha latte and hot latte and sat outside before shopping and walking around. The coffee was as good as I remembered from Orlando and the banana bread I should've grabbed another one. Oh well next time...
google avatar

Yelp
As the coffee scene continues to evolve and expand in Gainesville, I'm glad that Foxtail decided to come all the way from Orlando to set up shop in Gainesville. The aesthetics of the shop are excellent, with a good balance of modern and hip with a cozy and personal feel. I definitely agree, the space is cramped through. When it's busy, there's pretty much no seating inside. However, being located in Butler Plaza, there's plenty of outdoor spots for sitting around and chatting if you grab that coffee to go. The coffee itself, while a bit pricy, is of good quality. I got the Nitro Cold Brew and it was cold and refreshing with that signature lightness from the nitro charge and the fruity and rounded bitter notes that are present in dark roast coffee. Overall, I'm happy for the space and the addition in Gainesville. They definitely bring a more unique menu than you will ever find at a Starbucks :)
google avatar

Tracy M.

Yelp
Coffee is delicious, Chai Latte is scrumptious, service is friendly. Seating inside and out.
google avatar

Javier P.

Yelp
Second time here Tough the first time was just a bad day but again today Might as well go to mcdonalds and you'll get better coffee ‍
google avatar

Alyssa F.

Yelp
Foxtail is a cute little shop perfect for studying and or getting work done away from home! The service was average for a coffee shop. I got a tea and astray and the pastry was yummy along with the tea.

Mia M.

Yelp
Never again will I spend my money there! My tea tasted like watered down lemonade. The blueberry muffin was lacking flavor and was overall dry. Also they were understaffed and the barista was having trouble taking care of all the costumers. Was a very small location especially with the amount of people that were squeezed in there
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
At last, my favorite coffee place in Orlando is finally open in Gainesville! If there is Buddy Brew in Tampa, there is Foxtail coffee in Orlando! I love their industrial interiors and their coffee is much better than Starbucks or Dunkin. In my opinion, along with Opus, this place is now one of the best coffee places in Gainesville! Though the store is not as large as the one in Orlando, I am very happy that we have Foxtail! Thank you for coming to Gainesville and improving our coffee quality!
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Really delicious coffee. I'm a fan of the iced vanilla latte with whole milk and I've also had the lavender coconut tea. If the line is long, try ordering through the app to expedite your order!
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop idea in a great location. However the store was shockingly dirty and the bathroom horrendous. Seating is almost non existent however as it's usually taken up by students without drinks using the wifi. It's also very loud. Overall, I don't particularly feel it's good enough to bother with stopping in for - maybe on an off day if there's no crowd and you're picking up a coffee to go.

Ron S.

Yelp
Great experience as always. It was early evening and they didn't have their darkest coffee available. However, they said if I was willing to wait five minutes they would brew it up just for me.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
I would say they are very good for a chain coffee shop. My oatmeal latte was very good.

Anne A.

Yelp
I like the atmosphere and location but I wish it was bigger since the indoor seats are usually full. I don't recommend the matcha but the coffee is okay. The prices are a little high for a regular size ($7-8). The main con is their customer service, I've been here at least 10 times to give them the benefit of the doubt but each time the baristas don't greet, smile, or say anything even when I was the only customer. I've been to their Orlando location and it was overall a better experience!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Here's the thing - I think Foxtail has potential in Gainesville but the space is incredibly small and the prices are WAY too high. Ordered a small latte and with tip it was $8. I don't mind the prices if the drinks are on point but mine was so sweet I couldn't even finish it. Hope to try again once they figure everything out!

Ces A.

Yelp
My Coffee was good but not impress with the doughnut it's very dense. Probably back to try a hot coffee choices and different pastry next time.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Staff was nice, everything we tried was yummy. Coffee is delicious! It's become my new favorite place here in Gainesville. Not much indoor seating but lots of outdoor seating. Ambiance is nice, it's quiet and cozy.

Julia B.

Yelp
Was very excited to try this place after looking for a good coffee place in the area. I ordered a coffee and it came out to over $7. Upon trying the coffee I found it very watery and it just tasted like sweetener. The longer I had it the more the drink started to separate and I just decided to throw it away. $7 I will not see again. The only good part was the ambiance. The place was very cute and gave a very hipster vibe and the service was also very nice.

Maya K.

Yelp
Overall cute place but very expensive. The inside is very small, so I wouldn't recommend as a study spot. My flat white was pretty good but expensive. Not a bad spot, but for the price I'd rather go to Opus or another local shop.

Kelli C.

Yelp
Very cute coffee shop with excellent coffee. Enjoyed the croissants and the breakfast sandwich. Everything was very fresh and tasty. Staff was friendly and helpful. Foxtail has become our favorite coffee stop in Gainesville.
