So I honestly don't know how many stars to give this place.
On the one hand, the donuts are seriously amazing. They make one type of donut - a cakey, plain one - that is perfectly dense and moist on the inside (cakey donuts get really dry, but not these at all), with a crunchy exterior. I could eat them plain and be happy. When we were there, the machine was churning out donuts possibly to order, or maybe just getting the first ones made for the day. So they're fresh and hot.
Then they dip them in a glaze of your choice, and toppings of your choice. I got the honey glaze with cinnamon sugar and coconut, and it was probably the best donut I've ever eaten. Because the donuts are so hot, the glazes just sort of melt into it. And the base dough isn't overly sweet, so they don't get overly sweet with the glaze.
Service was prompt, even though they had a line immediately upon opening (and they opened about 10 minutes early), and very friendly - and patient with our indecisive kid.
If I could stop there, I'd give this place 5 stars and look for an option to give six.
But. BUT. You guys. I honestly do not know how this place passes health inspection. It is FILTHY. Not a single surface looked clean. The bins with the glazes were all completely open, with streaks and chunks of partially dried glaze running down the sides. The toppings bins were similarly messy. The wall of the prep area that I could see was just coated with multicolored... STUFF. I assume glazes, but who knows for sure?
We were there first thing, so this wasn't end-of-the-day mess. This was clearly there from the day before, and the day before, and probably weeks or months of just not cleaning at all. I really can't overstate how gross it was. I almost couldn't eat my donut (you take them out, not eat there, so that helped). Even the coffee service area was dirty.
So, if they start cleaning the place and maybe get some covers for the glazes (seriously - the door stays open, so bugs can get in, go straight for the bins of liquid sugar, get stuck there.... shudder), I'd be there every day I'm in OC. As it is, I don't think I can go back.
