Boris Johnson Visits Pubs Opening With Covid-19 Rules | Eater London

"Portrayed as a closed pizza restaurant used for a carefully staged meeting that nonetheless sparked confusion; tables were arranged like an Apprentice-style boardroom and every participant was seated two metres apart, making the episode feel largely theatrical and prompting debate over whether rules were breached or whether the affair was simply muddled publicity." - James Hansen

Went here for dinner and was really hoping to eat some excellent pizza. The place was easy to find and seating was a flight of stairs down. There was plenty of room and I was seated quickly. The atmosphere seemed lively but not overly noisy so overall pretty good. I placed an order for a glass of wine and mixed olives. They came out quickly. The wine was literally served in drinking water glasses, which isn’t a big deal I suppose. Just different! I then looked around to get the attention of the wait staff when I was ready to order my pizza. It took a bit but I got my order in. I ordered their OG Margarita pizza and a side salad. The food came out fairly quickly. I started with the salad which was OK. The dressing was not great but overall it wasn’t bad, but not great either. The pizza slices were very wet and almost mushy. When picked up, the center fell off and lost most of the sauce and the cheese. Slice after slice, same issue. I didn’t really like the pizza much. Definitely have had much better margarita pizzas. The first wasn’t very good either - felt very wet and unstable. For dessert I got the tiramisu. Came out looking pretty beat up. It was OK. Overall, really wanted to like it but definitely disappointed. Wouldn’t recommend, I’m sure there are better options nearby.

Starting with the absolutely excellent service! Very responsive and helpful service. I would definitely recommend it and will be coming back! The Pizza’s we ordered are all rated 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟! We loved it and loved the vibes. Toilets are clean & the place is lovely and quiet.

Wow - wow - wow!!!! Best TRUFFLE - MUSHROOM PIZZA we ate worldwide!!! I highly can recommend this place ( I dont know if every Franco Manca is the same, but this one was top) They dough is super delicious and the topping is great. Extraordinary - no run of the Mill like every other! Reasonable prices We loved it. Service was very friendly - kids Menu plus pens to colour available - everything for a great time! My daughter was super happy as well and loved the Pizza. The Restaurant itself is nice, neat and clean. You have to go downstairs - But not a typical Italian Restaurant with white tablecloth and fifefold cutlery. If you expect something like this, you will miss this Chance AND pay a Fortune!

The staff here were really friendly. The pizza was really good too. Really good vegan options - the vegan mozzarella was high quality.

Went to Franco Manca to celebrate my friend’s birthday and had such a lovely experience. Our waiter Erdona was absolutely wonderful, friendly, attentive and accommodating. She made my friend feel so special and even surprised her with a tiramisu and candle to celebrate. The food was great as always and the service really made the evening memorable. Thank you Erdona for making our visit so special🥰

Yelp
Five stars for a slice of sustainability and soul! Tucked into a London corner, this charming Italian gem serves up more than just pizza -- it offers purpose on a plate. The pizza was exquisite, with a dough so flavorful and light it could only come from flour born in Wildfarmed's biodiverse fields. Paired with crisp salad and a glass of thoughtfully selected wine, every bite felt like a celebration of quality, care, and conscience. Love that this place honors slow fast food with heart and principles -- it's dining that delights and does good.

Yelp
Delicious food and very good service. The ambiance was quite sultry and romantic. We enjoyed our meal and it made our visit from California memorable.

Yelp
We were hungover and wanted pizza. This was a pizza, service was great and fast. They even had very good and fresh orange juice which was a random surprise. The salad was ok but did the job. It's a quiet place but the upstairs outdoor seating is nice. Not amazing, but I would go back for a pizza.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, felt like having a dinner at home among friends. The food is wonderful and the deserts even better. The nature of the restaurant and the location provides the authentic Italian experience. Couldn't recommend more.

Yelp
Quaint location, I was surprised to see that it was primarily in a basement setting. Great quality food for a small pizza chain, a gorgeous wood fired oven and high quality sourdough crusted pizza. Was pleasantly surprised to discover Green Coke, a healthier, stevia based cola product! Well worth the money to try it. The focaccia was delicious, as well as the burrata and rocket (arugula), as well as flavorful cherry tomatoes. Pizza was hot, red sauce was gorgeous and flavorful, very happy to get such great Neopolitan pizza at a notably forgiving price. Servers were kind and friendly, they offered gluten free dough, and were very concerned to make sure no health concerns were unaddressed. As a note to potential readers, lower reviews by other Yelpers may not understand the Italian history behind these pizzas, this is not your Americanized pizza chain or anything like it. Traditional Neopolitan wood fired pizza here.

Yelp
Nice sour dough pizza chain. The menu consists of less than 10 pizzas but all looked amazing. I had a chorizo and buffalo which was perfect also had lamb side which was great for dipping. The bill was about £20 less than Pizza Express for better food. Defiantly going again and won't bother with pizza express again

Yelp
A very affordable place for pizza. The crust is nice since it's sour dough crust. I enjoyed my vegetarian pizza but there is a lot (too much) crust for me. Not enough toppings unfortunately. Pizza prices start at £5,65 which is very cheap. I guess that is why the crowd is so young and it's very noisy. I would give it a 3.5 stars. Service was efficient.

Yelp
Great pizzas. Thin dough, fresh ingredients and delicious! The staff are very nice and helpful. I wanted to add toppings to my pizza, it was already in the oven. They did with no issues and with a smile! The only thing is, it is a little confusing to find them. The restaurant is downstairs. The entrance looks like a small shop. But once you walk downstairs, it's a nice, casual Italian restaurant.

Yelp
It's nice to see them prepare and cook the pizza while your waiting and overall food is ready pretty quickly. It felt like a family run restaurant with the waitstaff joking and arguing in Italian. Many of the other customers who came in were also Italian. I got a side salad and their special meat pizza. They usually only have half a dozen or so pizzas on their menu with a meat special and a veg special. While the crust of the pizza is doughy and delicious, I found the middle to be extremely soggy and there weren't enough toppings for my taste. I also deducted another star for service. It took over 10 minutes to get the bill after it was requested and there is definitely preferential treatment to Italian customers. While I'm all about having fun interactions with customers, one waitress spent over 15 minutes with a table of four with over half of that time being spent watching pizzas being made, while a dozen people piled up at the door, waiting to be seated/order takeaway.

Yelp
I'd probably give this place 3 to 3.5 stars - it is pretty good value and the pizza is large and filling for under £, but it wasn't something that would keep me running to come back every so often. The menu is a not very large, which is fine -- I'd rather they do a few things well than a bunch of things in a mediocre fashion. They do have about 6-8 pizzas that you can choose from, so you should be able to find something that suits your taste. You can also get pizza and add some toppings, which is nice that you can customise things. I ended up wth the Gloucester Old Spot Ham, Mozzarella, Buffalo Ricotta, Wild Mushrooms (£7.35) and added extra tomato sauce (+£0.95) per the server's recommendation. I thought the pizza was okay, it wasn't quite as hot as I would have liked it, but maybe that was my fault for sitting outside. I didn't really care for the ricotta on the top, and the ham was just okay. The crust was thin but a little bit soggy and the crust was a little bit burnt. Maybe it was just an off-day but I didn't really love my pizza. I had Pizza Pilgrims the other day and I prefer their pizza. The actual crust around the edges was nice and had that sourdough chewiness. It is a good deal at only £7-8 per pizza, so it's an affordable meal and certainly a decent option if you want pizza. I'll give this another shot some other time but I wouldn't really go out of my way to come here.

Yelp
I don't know if it's the water or the flour or both, but pasta and dough-related foods are so delicious in London! And Franco Manca did not disappoint! Recommended by my trusted Yelp app, we decided to give this place a try. The actual restaurant is actually in the basement, but the decor is so hip and modern you won't feel claustrophobic at all. Relatively small menu compared to what we Americans are used to, but I think there is something for everyone. Between the two of us, we split the tomatoes mozzarella basil pizza and a salad. One gripe I had was that the entire pizza (enough to share for two light-eaters) had exactly TWO basil leaves. That was a bit disappointing. Naturally, service was not what we are used to in the States either. Just really slow and relaxed and nonchalant, but they are nice when they do come around to checking on you. Definitely will come back when I am in London again!

Yelp
For me, pizza is more than food, it's a religion, so I knew that I had to try Franco Manca. First of all, I love the aesthetic of the location, which is below street level. It gives a very authentic vibe. Second, the ingredients. All fresh, all tasty. Third, the price, which was unbelievably affordable. My only complain was about the service. The waiter was nice, but it took forever to get the bill.

Yelp
The Berwick Street Franco Manca is actually in the basement - wine and beer are stored upstairs, take a good look if you want to order these downstairs. The neapolitan pizza is made in a special brick oven using slow-rising sourdough - what this means is its genuinely fresh and soft! Excellent value for money - great pizza for under a tenner - you will never want a Domino's or even a pizza express again. Number 6 is highly recommended for chorizo lovers.

Yelp
the pizza was a little too doughy and the light cheese/sauce/toppings did not match up. however the ingredients used were quality and good service

Crystal C.

Yelp
SUCH good pizza!!! I'm a sucker for a good, generous crust and this place does just it right. Sourdough crust that is someone fluffy, light, but also chewy. ummmmmhmmm. They skimmed quite a bit in the toppings which wasn't cool, I literally found two mushrooms on my mushroom pizza. But once I dig into it I got over it, so good! Ham, mozzarella and ricotta cheese, absolutely delicious. Are the entire pie no questions, it's what you do there. So go for it and enjoy! Was also crazing a light sweet treat after and The tiramisu was just that, hit the spot, totally recommend. Great job, folks!

Yelp
I was very pleased with my recent dinner here! The price is amazing for the quality. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and clean. I ordered a margarita pizza and I added mushrooms and artichoke. My friend ordered the #3 with added artichoke. We both loved our pizza! The crust is thin in the middle with a fluffy sourdough crust. Delicious! The pizza was large so we could both only eat half! So we both had half a pizza to take away. Two meals in one!
google avatar

Yelp
Great pizza! The server was awesome and super friendly. I only waited about 5 - 10 min for my food. I ordered #6 - the chorizo - and the lemon cake. Great dinner!

Yelp
Surprising delicious at the price! The cheapest italian in town. Their sour dough pizzas are delicious and so is the burrata, so fresh! Must try! It will surely become our go-to place for pizza.

Yelp
Not being a local London laydee I wasn't aware of the small chain of Franco Manca pizza restaurants in London. Myself & my boyfriend were in Soho for a book signing (at the brilliant comic/graphic novel/book shop, Gosh!) and afterwards we were on the lookout for food, I had spotted this pizza place (with my pizza-spotting-eagle-eye) as I had walked along Berwick Street earlier & the 2 words that made me go 'Ooh...' were 'SOURDOUGH' and 'PIZZA', that's 2 words I dig heavily. It also seems London digs all things sourdough too as later on in my wee jaunt to London I also consumed copious amounts of sourdough bread/toast and sourdough doughnuts (OMG! BEST DOUGHNUTS ALERT!) So it only felt appropriate that my 1st meal in 'that London' was a pizza of the sourdough variety. We had a bit of a wait for a table but all good things (hopefully) come to those who stand on some stairs in the cold for a wee while, as the saying goes. Once seated I noticed how deceptively big this place is. You wouldn't think so looking at the entrance but once downstairs it's a good size & they fit a lot of tables in. We were greeted & seated & handed the fairly simple menu. They're similar to a restaurant in Glasgow called Paesano, which also has a simple menu of sourdough pizzas & I am a fan of, so I had high hopes for this place...I am very happy to say this place certainly did not disappoint. Wow. I ordered a No Logo Pale Ale (£3.35) and for my pizza ~ The Gloucester Old Spot (Home Cured) Ham, Mozzarella, Buffalo Ricotta & Wild Mushrooms with only a little amount of tomato (£6.85). Service was speedy and within about 10/15 mins we were eating these magnificent bready beasts. The pizzas were absolutely DIVINE. If any pizza could be described as melt-in-the-mouth then this was certainly one of them. The base was one of the nicest pizza bases I've tasted probably ever. It's not as thin as some but it's not a 'deep pan' either, it's just right. The sourdough obviously makes the dough & base totally pillow-like in lightness, yet with a nice slight chew also. I also didn't have to fight it when cutting into it which sometimes happens with other pizzas. The toppings were all super delicious as well, with just the right amount of everything. I like that this pizza also had not much tomato (sugo) on it as sometimes I find most pizzas have too much for my taste & it can overpower the delicate cheese & other such flavours/toppings. Dessert wise I think they only have one option; the Tiramisu. It was a beautiful Tiramisu though. They also serve coffee and as well as beer wine and soft drinks. Our bill, for 2 pizzas, 2 drinks and a dessert came to under £25 and we were both stunned at the price for the quality of the food we had just devoured. Especially as we were in London! (nae offence; you just assume everything is going to be 5x more expensive down here than in Glasgow, but I was happy to say we were proved wrong) The staff here were all very friendly & super efficient also. All in all, this place ~ brilliant. If you are in search of a pizza in London then please check this, or one of their other restaurants out, as you will not be disappointed. Next time I'm in London I'm gonna make sure I squeeze in a visit to this place again. Oh yes.

Yelp
I went with 3 Italians and they all swore by it. I found the crust a bit too thin but otherwise delish!

Terry M.

Yelp
Some of the BEST pizza ever! The two times I went I got the Margherita Pizza and the red wine. The prices are very reasonable and not too expensive. This place is a must when I come to London

Josh S.

Yelp
Amazing pizza, service was quick, a bit crowded but that's to be expected when the pizza is £6. Some of the best pizza I've had the cheese and dough work together very well.
google avatar

Dominique R.

Yelp
This pizza place is in my top 2 for pizzas in London. The sourdough base is really special! I had the wild broccoli, mozzarella and Gloucester Old Spot sausage pizza with no tomato sauce and I highly recommend it =] They also do special starters with authentic fresh tasting ingredients. Very yummy! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I can't decide if I prefer it to Homeslice Pizza.
google avatar

Sheikha J.

Yelp
The pizza was so good, ingredients seem fresh, menu was simple. would definitely go back there again, although i wasn't expecting it to be in a basement. Most importantly, the staff were nice and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
An understated little basement restaurant. Good pizza. I'm not used to eating pizza with a knife and fork, so that was different. I'd recommend.

Artur J.

Yelp
Amazing pizza, friendly staff, good wine and all for a great price. Plus our waiter Luis was very professional. I'll definitely come back!

Leah B.

Yelp
Excellent handmade pizza and what a value! Ate here today and was once again totally impressed with the quality of the pizza and the congeniality of the staff. Great food and drink and helpful wait staff, just a delight. If you want truly delicious pizza, and a drink, COME EAT HERE, you won't be sorry. My latte was perfection, and only £2!

Robert M.

Yelp
I just love this place, the pizza's are delicious and cheap for London. Most are priced at £7 to £8's, great side salads and love the fact that it's sourdough. Great organic wines I try to go at least once or twice a month. Go early as it gets very busy.
