For the premium prices they charge, I expected near perfection. At 9 bucks each that was sadly not the case. Let’s start with the main attraction: the sausage. I ordered a classic Chicago and a Coney. Both featured jumbo all-beef franks with a coarser grind, closer to a bratwurst than the smooth texture of a wiener. Crucially, they lacked much flavor.
The toppings on the Coney were all out of proportion (see my photo). If it isn’t overflowing with chili then what’s the point? The mustard should have been an accent rather than the dominant flavor. And the onions were a bit skimpy to my taste.
The Chicago had the same problem with the toppings ratio. I count on my favorite, the bright green piccalilli relish, to pack a sweet-and-sour punch. I was let down again. Both buns were warm but could have been toastier or, even better, steamed.
I hated to say this because I’m an ardent supporter of local businesses, but this is a failed concept that doesn’t deliver the gourmet hot dog experience.
Originally called Umai Savory Hot Dogs, I think the extensive menu choices could be the trouble. If they focused solely on dogs rather than the additional choices of hamburgers and fried chicken sandwiches (their previous menu also offered noodles), they might be able to hit it out of the park
