Frank Guido: “I Don’t Want to Change. I’m Who I Am” | Bon Appétit

"A family-run, old-school Italian-American red-sauce restaurant in Midtown Kingston that opened in 2007 and has become a community anchor where regulars celebrate births, anniversaries and often hold after-funeral gatherings. The atmosphere mixes dark wood, white-linen tablecloths and a photo wall of family and famous visitors, conveying continuity and comfort. Signature offerings include a best-selling chicken Parmesan, fried calamari, a “Traditional NY Style” pizza topped with mozzarella and Mama’s tomato sauce, meatballs and gravy inspired by the owner’s grandmother, and a special “filet and tail” of sliced steak with lobster and pasta; customers frequently ask to take home the house tomato sauce (sometimes packed in 16-ounce containers). While small, modern additions have appeared—such as a goat-cheese, pear and arugula pizza—the focus remains on plentiful portions, familiar favorites, long-standing vendors and a refusal to change the core identity even as the founder steps back and his son takes over." - ByJen Doll

There's a good reason so many famous people have eaten here. The food was fantastic with huge portions, our servers were on top of things, and even though it was crowded, our reservation was honored within 5 minutes.

My family and I have eaten and celebrated at Frank Guido's over the last 10 years, the food and service is always excellent. I recently had my daughters graduation party with all our extended family and friends. First, the staff that served us was beyond top notch, always smiling quick to serve and assist, just excellent! The room we dined in was beautiful, The food is as, has always been, delicious and everyone enjoyed their meal. We will be back as always.

We joined my Mom's friends here for a belated birthday celebration. They treated us like we were the only customers at the restaurant. The food was absolutely fantastic! I had the steak. Ssooooo good!

Stopped in for the first time the other day for dinner with family. The inside of the building is fantastic, clean and comfortable with a touch of nostalgia. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating as well. The food was outrageously delicious and worth every penny for quality Italian cuisine. My favorite part was the affogato for dessert which is my favorite, but hard to find at local Italian restaurants. I will absolutely be back!

I really can’t say enough good things about Frank Guido’s Little Italy. From the owners, staff, food… everything. My family & I have shared numerous celebrations and dinners here over the years but nothing will ever top doing our wedding reception with them in May. The amazing service and care we received that night and leading up to it meant so much to us that it’s hard to even put into words how thankful we are. Special recognition for Marie who spent months talking with me, organizing, and making sure everything was perfect.. & it was!! Also, Amanda who made sure we were taken care of all night. You are both exceptional and I can’t thank you enough..And to all the other staff that made our wedding night amazing as well.. THANK YOU!! To top it off today getting a letter & gift in the mail from Mark thanking us for holding our reception with them..Truly made our day and proves we made the right choice when we decided to do a smaller reception at a local spot we love so much! I would recommend them to anyone, for any event, big or small! 10/10! ❤️ -Nicole & Derrick Jackson

This place was fantastic! Food was excellent, very authentic. Would go here again.

I had such high hopes for this place. What an absolute disappointment. The service was awful, our server was a young lady and likely did not have much experience. She has a lot to learn, drinks were empty for a long time, no dessert was offered, just given the check. The food was “consumption”. It didn’t taste bad, we were able to eat it but it was not special in anyway. It was calories. I could have done the same or better at home. Major regret for coming here.

This was our first time going and we had to get takeout. It was so good, I had to call the restaurant and tell them. I've worked restaurant most of my life, from management, to cook, and kitchen manager. Our phone order was taken by Terry or Theresa (i believe). She was super nice, personable, and helped me with all my questions. We got the Family to-go deal #1. Penne a la vodka, Caesar salad and bread. We added the meatball app, calamari fritti, and bocconcini. My wife had to run in a pick up the food because i currently have a bum foot, but they offered to help walk out our order to the car. All these little things add up to why they've been around since the early 70's (if i read correctly). Everything was absolutely amazing. I can't wait till me and the wife can have a proper date night and sit for a meal. Thank you for making this family so happy.

Yelp
This place reminds me of a NYC restaurant. Good music, good atmosphere with Italian photos on the wall, and a great menu. Kingston never disappoints!

Yelp
Delayed writing a review because it's been hectic. Long story short, we came here for Thanksgiving dinner and my family all left happy and full. Two of us had the thanksgiving meal while others opted for a non traditional Italian Thanksgiving- eggplant parm. Service was good, it was my first time visiting but my parents love it so that's where we went while visiting for Thanksgiving. Reservations were easy and they even followed up prior to to confirm the time and number in our party. Good food and service.

Yelp
Best meal in Kingston. After a long bike ride, this place was great quality taste. I felt like we were tapping into a spirit of Kingston, by visiting such a historic anchor to the city. Crystal was our server. She was super kind and always attended to us. She gave us great recommendations, the chicken parm. 100% recommend this dish. Get it with penne pasta. The chicken is extremely well prepared. The marinara sauce on top is so juicy. We also got an October special. Linguine with pinenuts, prosciutto, and figs. It was a very sweet pasta, kind of tasted like a dessert. I really enjoyed the freshness and that that dish was. Complementary bread was appreciated. The Zeppoli was very tasty.

Yelp
The ambiance is quite charming - typical old shool Italian restaurant feelings! We were able to get the table without any wait time. The restaurant is huge. The service was great! Our server was quite attentive of everything! We started off with peach and tomato summer salad. This was such a vibrant salad to have - so much freshness with all the good quality ingredients! Love this one and it did set our expectations high for the main course. The complimentary bread basket was not that appealing. For the main course we had Fettuccine Alfredo and Cavatelli (with beans as vegetarian version). Cavatelli was quite average - personally we didn't enjoy it. The fettuccine Alfredo was good but after putting lot of black pepper seasoning myself. They charge extra for broccoli which I don't mind. But it should be explicitly mentioned while ordering. Overall the vegetarian options felt a bit underwhelming except the summer salad.

Yelp
With 50 minutes to spare before closing and at least 20 minutes to get there, I called just to make sure it was safe to go for dinner. When Terri told me over the phone that we're "fine", we burned rubber. Located in the Midtown Kingston area, Frank G's is about as serious as it gets for Italian food made the right way. No impostors. Just run by a passionate, Italian family serving a wonderful mix of staples and other surprises. The inside is extra. Tons of space up front by the bar area and lots more seating towards the back in a cozier setting. There might even be an upstairs- but that's just a guess. Our server Amanda was spot on and incredibly polite. Between our drinks, their homemade olive oil spiked with all these herbs, our Burrata+Strawberry Bruschetta and Caesar salad starters, they were all on point. Hubs devoured his Chicken Parm and said to me that if I did eat poultry, I would've loved their tomato-only sauce. My Shrimp Scampi had a scrumptious garlic bite. If only the shrimp were a tad bigger(?). We seriously couldn't do dessert this time- but there will be a next. This is where you need to come to satisfy your Italian food cravings with an extra dose of friendliness. Frank G.'s marks the go-to place for many celebrities. That aside, the atmosphere here is alive and not uptight. Terri was wonderful and greeted us instantly. But my girl Michelle the hostess with the mostest, has the warmest vibe ever! Gracias!

Yelp
This was an excellent place to hold our Kiwanis event for a Governor's visit. I came up here from Long Island. It was a very easy trip and the restaurant has plenty of parking in a lot facing them. It is very centrally located in downtown Kingston. I have been here before and was definitely looking forward to some really good food. The restaurant is very rustic with plenty of light from windows and electric but... not too much, so it stays cozy and warm. After a few minutes of a meet and greet, the amazing-helpful staff, who were so attentive to us, opened the buffet for our excellent meal. Salad, Penne a la Vodka, Meatballs & Sausage and Chicken Francaise. All foods that I can just eat and eat. Everything was extremely tasty and hot. I love their meatballs and sausage. Plenty of delicious meat in an extremely tasty-rich marinara sauce. The chicken is just tremendous, tender and tasty. They certainly have the formula correct at Franks. I am definitely looking forward to another return trip here. It's well worth the car ride. KUDOs to the team at Frank Guido's Little Italy.

Yelp
We have been to this restaurant several times and are never disappointed. The portions are very large, freshly prepared. The service was excellent, Amanda and Terri were outstanding, they were friendly, gracious, attentive and went out of their way to make sure everything was satisfactory. The menu has something for everyone, and they accommodate special requests. We will definitely return. Greg and Donna Bisanz

Yelp
This pains me to write this review but if it prevents someone else from over spending on a terrible experience, it's worth it. Sat at front desk waiting for a woman to fill out papers before we sat down. Strange and awkward. She said one moment while I finish this up. This should have been our sign. The food: -Fried dough was too doughy/big -the waitress shook a thing of olive oil and slammed it on the table...I guess to dip bread? -bruschetta-over done toast, soggy tomato's...clearly done sometime ahead of time -shrimp scampi...ok. Pasta was sticking qtogether -fresh parm...pointed to a thing on the table...like an old school pizza place shaker. -we could not transfer our bar tab to our table tab. Server sent us back to the bar to pay. -the restaurant is very loud. I've received better service at the diner. Better food too. I also recently attended a Party in the back room and must say in The serving sizes were very small portions. The Chicken Marsala was excellent tasting and the service was better during the party. The back room is beautiful. I would not go to dinner here again but I would consider having a party here, considering the cost, which is unknown but I wouldn't pay more than $40 per head for food, no Open bar.

Yelp
Food, service, ambiance! Frank Guidos has it ALL!!! Been here a handful of times and is always incredible but last night was review worthy. Uriah is an amazing waiter! Attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, kind. 10/10 recommend! He and all the staff at Frank Guidos made my birthday celebration one to remember

Yelp
Favorite Italian restaurant in Kingston. We went there with a big family group. The appetizers were delicious.,mamas meatballs were one and garlic bread with melted mozzarella stole the show, so good. We had a lot of mains that were delicious. Hubby loved his veal parmigiana, I loved my shrimp fra diavolo, others had linguini aragosta, daughter had gnocchi in vodka sauce, so many delicious entrees. We had a few desserts, the black and white mousse cake was amazing. Others like tiramisu. All in all a wonderful meal, great service. The restaurant staff really make you feel comfortable like you are part of their family. I would highly recommend eating here.

Yelp
We were just in this awesome restaurant for Thanksgiving! We go every Thanksgiving! Our waiter is one of the best: Cory is his name. Food was delicious as always. The whole staff were friendly and made us feel welcomed!! So a huge thank you. Sue LaShomb!

Yelp
Food is good, I love the ambiance. Service is quick and helpful. Love that they do birthday celebrations and they let you pick a free appetizer ( I believe ) for free in your actual birthday.

Yelp
I have never left a review before but I had such a great experience here that I had to. Michelle and Crystal behind the bar were so welcoming and friendly and attentive and just all around great ladies! I came for the burrata and I'm so glad I did because it was beyond delicious! What a great atmosphere and such a friendly staff. If I lived here I'd go there every week!

Yelp
Top shelf service can be quick even when they're busy. Great food and atmosphere. Seemed like a bunch of regulars around the bar. Great vibe. Braciole, Gnocchi and pizza for the kids all excellent.

Yelp
Went on a cold, rainy spring evening and greeted with friendliness and warmth. Fire of central pizza oven gave added glow to center of the restaurant. No reservation, but seated almost immediately in corner, private table (with hubby - romantic). Server- Vanessa - very attentive and again, friendly. We had chicken marsala and Mom's platter/ meatballs, etc. & also mussels appetizer. Super rich yummy food (gonna take a lot of rowing to work it off). The old pics of famous Italian singers (John Travolta!) & actors (Robert Deniro, etc.) great fun. Not cutting edge, but if you want a solid (reasonably priced) dinner, where you feel welcomed (unusual these days) this is the place!

Yelp
It has been a loooong time since I've been here. My hubby has never been so we decided to hit this spot with some friends. We made reservations for 6:30 and still had to wait 30 minutes for a table. It was not a great start to our visit. We were seated at a nice table with Amanda as our waitress. She is FANTASTIC! We started with drinks and we all ordered espresso martinis. They were delicious. They also brought out a bread basket with three different breads and a bottle of olive oil. Again delicious For starters, we ordered the calamari which was delicious and tender. The clams oreganata were great. We ordered that family style, double the price bit three times as much. So delicious and there was plenty for three to four people. Next we all ordered different dinners and all great. I had the eggplant parmigiana. The best Ive had out. They put one slice then roll up a bunch of slices and put it in top with mamas sauce and cheese. It was so great and so much better than the measly slices I've had in other places. Hubby had the veal parmigiana. Super tender and so good! Our friends ordered the brasciole and penne ala vodka and linguine with white clam sauce. We all enjoyed our dinners greatly and Amanda was a great waitress. Very kind and attentive. She knew the menu inside out. We all ate half our dinners so we could make it to dessert. My crème brûlée was the special. Delicious and smooth and bigger than I expected. My hubby had the last Tiramisu of the night. He said it was good but too small in size. The cheesecake and the chocolate cake were also good. The chocolate cake is super rich and fudgy. All in all we had a wonderful dinner and will definitely be back.

Yelp
Delicious! Old family recipes. Fantastic red sauce. We had the ravioli and eggplant parm and both were wonderful. Get the cannoli for dessert, they fill it at the time of serving. Beautiful historic building. Yummy thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
I've never had a bad meal here. We cqme for salads and stayed for dessert. The staff was helpful and friendly. The decor is classic traditional Italian. I feel like I'm out to dinner with my Italian grandparents. They would respect a place like this!

Yelp
Came here as I was on vacation with my fiancé, celebrating our engagement. First off, when I called to make the reservation I told the host we were celebrating. I then again told the waiter, after being asked if we were celebrating anything. Did they do anything for us? No...this was super disappointing. My second complaint was the pasta. I got the spaghetti and the sauce was super water. Lastly, the service was very slow. I was expecting more from this place as it came highly recommended. I will say the burrata was very good and the atmosphere was cute.
google avatar

Mary E.

Yelp
Really solid Italian food!! I came here with my boyfriend a weekend night and it's got a nice casual but traditional fancy Italian vibe to it. We got sat on the second floor which was nice. Service was decent, portions were fine, food was DELICIOUS!!! Will come here again for sure.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
I went here to eat for Thanksgiving with my family. The food did not disappoint, but I thought they skimmed out on some of the dishes. We ordered the large turkey meal which costed us about $400 for all eight of us. The atmosphere was very loud and rowdy but we were in a loud room. Our server was not very welcoming and did not tend to us for long periods of time. Overall I thought the restaurant was ok but I would go again. I hope this review is helpful.
google avatar

Krist D.

Yelp
Go here for a great Italian meal! Had attended repast event in Kingston and the penne vodka and salmon were phenomenal! They had it served family style so I was afraid the fish would be dry or not fresh but it was probably one of the best salmon I've eaten and the best penne vodka that I've had in YEARS!!! Yay!!!
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Great food! They made everything to our liking. The service was nice. It was a little crowded when we went but that's not their fault. I suppose it's a good thing.

Yelp
Frank Guido's Little Italy is well known for their "Birthday dinner is on us!" promotion. Wow, lots of people with the same birthday - about 20 the evening we were there! Wife had shrimp scampi; I had the truffle risotto special. Both excellent with generous portions. The bruschetta we shared was also excellent. Our server, Alanna, was outstanding. Very attentive, informative and helpful. All that with a good table wine and great old school ambiance made for a delightful dinner. Thanks!

Yelp
Frank Guido's Little Italy is a fantastic spot serving up big Italian Flavor in the heart of Kingston. The food looked so appetizing, I forgot to take any pictures for this review, before i dug in. We called and made a reservation for 12 people. Upon arrival, we were seated pretty quickly and the staff was exceptionally friendly. The high level of service continued throughout the meal with a fantastic waitress who was both engaging and attentive to everyone's needs. The interior was decorated tastefully with italian styling and low lighting that makes it a great spot for a date, a special event, or just a normal night out. We got the Caesar Salad, Garlic Bread w/ Mozzarella Cheese, Bocconcini (Deep Fried Mozzarella), and the Little Italy Parmigiana Bomb. Without dragging out the review any further, everything we ordered was fantastic! My favorite was the Parmigiana Bomb, the mix of chicken parm, eggplant, and prosciutto made for an incredible bite. The caesar salad was exceptional as well. I 100% will be back the next time i'm in the area.

Spi H.

Yelp
Well.... Where do I begin. A door to the kitchen would be beneficial, esp when the staff is cutting the bread with their bare unwashed hands. Not to mention, the bread is sitting out in the open uncovered, on top of the dishwasher! I had prime seating, where I could watch the dirty dishes go in and the bread be cut all at the same time . Don't worry they washed their hands afterward. Who could enjoy a meal with the sounds of dishes banging and clanging. As far as the food.... I give it a 2 out of 10 stars . It tasted mass produced and pre made. Note to self, Bobo does not know genuine Italian food.

Yelp
Very nice Valentine dinner. Food was delicious as always. I loved the drink special. It's an Italian family dining experience but who brings very exuberant toddlers to a Valentines dinner? Yelling and running up and around the dining space. I guess I'm old fashioned. It's not the restaurant's fault, I know. Next year we may be looking for a quieter place for our traditional romantic dinner. The whole atmosphere was loud and felt rushed but like I said it's a family restaurant. Food and service was wonderful.

Annarita M.

Yelp
Fried Calamari are the best of the best! And I am Italian! I eat in a lot of restaurants, but this is the #1!

Yelp
Great food and cocktails. Very family centric feel and vibe. Comforting and relaxing.

Rita D.

Yelp
Attended a private lunch for 20p. Food and service amazing!!! Can't wait to go back! All the items were served family style.

Laureen H.

Yelp
Greeted warmly when we walked in-shown to a table in the back. Only two other tables seated. Took awhile to get one Coke & 1 glass of wine. Gave our orders when delivered; cavatelli with sausage, mushrooms, broccoli rabe; the Feroe salmon w/ tomato basil "salsa" & spinach. Asked if it came with any pasta -no-so, asked for small dish of plain penne. Took a long time to rcv our food. Both dishes underwhelming. The bill came & they charged $8 for the small dish of penne w/my $29 salmon. Won't be going back any time soon -there are a lot of better Italian restaurants around.

Yelp
I have yet to be able to take a picture of my food at Frank Guido's, mostly because the food is so amazing that there's no time to take a picture before you start eating it. I've gone to this restaurant for multiple occasions, including multiple birthdays and just for dinner and when I tell you that the service is excellent, that's an understatement. There's no argument that Frank Guidos is one of the best Italian food restaurants in the Hudson valley. First they come out with the bread basket that is loaded with the softest bread you'll ever eat, as well as Zeppoli's. The salad is always dressed perfectly, and the main dishes are delicious. They used to have a deal for a free or discounted birthday dinner for a birthday person on their actual birthday. I will check in with them if they still do that. But I've done it before and the food was great. The next time you're near Kingston and are feeling Italian food, please check out Frank Guido's.

Terry W.

Yelp
Good and service perfect-especially when you sit upstairs and see how expert the waiter is in carrying dishes up the stairs. Never drop and quick enough to still be hot.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
It takes a lot for me to say that I love a restaurant. I absolutely love Guidos. As soon as you walk in everyone is so nice and welcoming. The ambience is truly comforting and the space is very modern Italy, but with a sense of family as you can tell through the pictures on the walls that their family has been, making incredible Italian food for the last few generations at least. The eggplant balls appetizer was honestly so incredible and they served three types of bread with them. Mind you, the bread was all super warm and perfectly baked. I also loved my entrée which was gnocchi with nuts and the most delicious sauce. My partner got the Bolognese I want to eat here every night. I literally love this place so much and highly recommend!
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Really one of my favorite places. Great owner who is always willing to help the people of our community. The food is always delicious and really fun to go for dinner.

Terry W.

Yelp
We had a reservation for a party of 6 for lunch. Before ordering we asked the waitress to split our check 3 ways. We were the only people in the restaurant. The waitress told us she coouldn't do that. We showed her on the menu where it clearly states that the policy of the restaurant was that they will split a party of 6 into 3 checks. The waitress said she still wouldn't do it and called the manager over. The manager was rude and hasty and begrudgingly said she'd do it but would only have the bartender serve us. We have been to this restaurant many times. There are too many good eating establishments in Kingston to dine in. We left and will never go back.
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
We've been coming here for over 18 years. I've never gone to your place for a holiday fixed price dinner but we've gone there for dinner several times each year. Last night's turkey dinner was the quality & quantity of a TV dinner! $35 is not chump change. The 3 of us rang up a $150 tab plus a $40 tip for our wonderful waitress Jenn. She's been our waitress before. She's excellent! Hannaford pie! What were you guys thinking? (I saw the pie boxes on the way out). Whoever is planning the holiday meals at your place needs to take a good, hard long look in the mirror! All you're accomplishing is chasing your client base away towards your competition. I will be back because you regular menu is very good. I will never eat a flat rate holiday dinner at your restaurant ever, again! George Graham 845-803-1710

Yelp
The food was amazing. We had the chicken parm, white pizza , meatballs pasta It was delicious. Amanda was excellent and attentive to our table. We sat outside. Overall excellent experience. Highly recommend.

Yelp
It's always a treat to go to Guido's. The atmosphere is comfortable and unpretentious, with friendly and excellent servers. This trip was to specifically try a couple of their new dishes, which Ric Orlando helped put on their menu. Delizio! We tried two of their new dishes, and one of their regulars. Each meal was scrumptious. We started with a yummy bread basket-- and we ended with tiramisu that was out of this world.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
We ate outside on the deck and had it all to ourselves on a bright Saturday afternoon. The food was great, service was even better and it was an enjoyable experience. We were served bread and olive oil to dip it in before our meal arrived. They even included some zeppole which my nephew was excited to see (who doesn't love dessert before your meal!?). The calamari was pretty good but mainly tentacles, which was ok but I don't eat that part. Nice marinara served with it. Caesar salad was very tasty. Spaghetti and meatballs was plentiful and the two large meatballs were super yummy. The salad and spaghetti were large enough portions for my brother & I to share and be satisfied. My nephew devoured his kids cheese pizza which was a nice size and pretty gooey with cheese.
google avatar

Jules D.

Yelp
Not sure you could actually call this food, let alone Italian food. Incredibly oily and bland, weird mix of diner and low brow American.
google avatar

Ellen L.

Yelp
Dinner upstairs at Frank Guido's Little Italy did not disappoint. Delicious Caesar salad followed by Shrimp Francese for me and Veal Francese for my husband. We tried the unusual drink special and were not disappointed. Priced fairly. Highlight of the meal was our waiter - Corey. Professional, friendly, and thoughtful. I would ask for him by name - he is that good!
google avatar

Yelp
Buongiorno! If you want Italian for lunch tomorrow, head out to Frank Guido's Little Italy for dinner the night before. The helpings are substantial and what foodies might expect from Italian fare. The cocktails are on point, as is the family style food and service. It is clear Frank Guido knows exactly what you want in an establishment like his, and his staff delivers. Steer clear of nothing good-wise. The entire menu offers something for everyone. Large parties and banquets are never a problem they have private spaces just for this, and appear to be just another one of Little Italy's specialties. Get out and see these guys, and as Nona would say, "Mangia!"
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
It was a busy night server was not attentive. Food was ok portions were smaller than one would expect and the pasta dishes with seafood was stingy to say the least for $40 a few more shrimp I think there were 5 medium shrimp in the whole dish a few more for the $$ would have been nice. Also, too much sauce and too little protein. The house sauce is very sweet needs a bit of tang. Chicken was really dry.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Great old school type of spot. Long wait but the people before us lingered and we were a big party. Once we got settled the good and drinks were very good. Veal saltimboca was excellent, as was the penne vodka and chicken parm. Nice wines, good ones by the glass. Good bread basket, too, zeppoloes! Fair pricing, nice atmosphere, friendly service. Excellent.

Yelp
One of the Great Restaurants in The Frank Guido chain. Staff is great very attentive as they are in all Frank Guido's establishments.
