I've wanted to try Frank Pepe's ever since I first saw the signs saying 'Coming Soon' on the building. Well, last night I finally made the effort and rather than going to my regular 'best pizza' joint, Tucci's, I went to Frank Pepe's. It was busy, and there was no wait to sit, even though the place was packed.
We all ordered a glass of wine. I was unimpressed with the delivery of it in a small water glass. Not only a small serving, but the glass doesn't allow the wine to breathe.
I asked our waitress, who was very friendly, if I could get a white pizza without the spinach and gorgonzola cheese. I was told no changes on the specialty pies. Okay. But it makes no sense, since pizza is made to order, isn't it?
We started with a small Pepe salad, which comfortably served all three of us. It was loaded with Calamata olives, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, cabbage, grated Pecorino Romano cheese, and lettuce. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing was done right, not too much, not too little. For $7.50, a great value.
After discussing options, we decided to get a Frank Pepe Small Pie Sampler, which is three, four, or five pizzas starting at $45. We got that spinach, mushroom, and gorgonzola white pie, a meatball and ricotta, and a classic mushroom and sausage.
The pizza was served quickly, and all three pies were set up next to the table. Each of us tried all the pies, and while we differed on our favorite, we agreed they were all good. My personal favorite was the sausage and mushroom. I wish there was more sausage, because it was really delicious, but there were loads of mushrooms, which I like as well. The ladies favored the meatball pie. We all liked the spinach.
To me, the toppings aren't as important as the crust. Like a building, the foundation matters. Everyone has their own preferences, but for me, the crust was too brittle, or maybe too hard. I like it a little softer and chewier. This one didn't gain favor with me.
While I would return if friends wanted to go, I would choose Tucci's first.
