Ice cream to me is right up there on the most important things in life. Ice cream is one of the reasons I know I wouldn't be suited to live 100 years ago. We tried the Franklin Ice Cream Bar on the coldest day in November, but I don't think that affected how much I enjoyed it. The ice cream was good quality and the shell was thick and crispy. However, the oil they use in the shell is super duper unhealthy as far as I know. Unless they're sing something revolutionary the shell that crisps up like that is made with coconut oil. 2 tablespoons of coconut oil is 120% of your saturated fat for the day. It's delicious, but basically not something you should be eating.
I think the biggest problem with this place is I didn't understand how it works. I still think I don't fully understand it. When you walk in there are packed freezer cases on the left. Those are for people who want to take the ice cream to go, that's totally separate from what they make for you when you want something custom made.
Next, I didn't understand what the word bar meant in the name of the restaurant. A bar to me means alcohol or candy bar or "ice cream sandwich" type dessert where the ice cream is between two cookies, crusts, or other similar biscuit. The bar in this case is no alcohol, it is ice cream is served on a stick, like a popsicle. The next point of confusion has to do with the overhead menu when you're at the counter. The one sign looks like a list (order this first, then this type layout), but it's numbered 1.) 1.) 3.) It's not a list. It's saying you choose one of the first, then one of the next, then three of the last. I felt like I was crazy!!! I didn't even know what questions to ask to figure out what I didn't know!
So quickly here's how it all works. You choose an ice cream flavor, chocolate or vanilla. Then a coating for the bar on a stick, milk chocolate or dark chocolate. Then you choose the toppings, they sprinkle the topping on the bar just as the coating is hardening so they stick real well. There are some toppings like marshmallow drizzle and I'm sure others.
Or you can get ice cream/custard in cups/cones, hot fudge sundaes, or milkshakes.
