Frankly Charleston Black History Tours

The is a history tour, not a tourist tour. History has been white-washed for centuries and continues to this day. Frank is a passionate scholar of Charleston history that you won’t learn on the tourist tours. When Frank taps his umbrella on the ground, listen up: He’s making a point! My wife and I loved Frank. He’s super kind and energetic. We would take this tour again just because there was too much info to process in two hours. He shared a bibliography and we plan to do more studying. He also shared a list of Black owned restaurants which you should try. (Hannibal’s = A+) This was the highlight of our trip to Charleston. Take this tour, you won’t regret it.

Our guide, Franklin, was an exceptional storyteller who brought Charleston's history to life. He shared valuable insights into the lives of overlooked enslaved artisans and builders, honoring their legacy. My family was captivated by Franklin's storytelling, leaving us eager to learn more about this beautiful city. I highly recommend taking a tour with Frankly Charleston Black History Tours.

Having grown up in Charleston and living outside for most of my adulthood, the tour was nostalgic!!! It allowed me the opportunity to share my city and childhood with friends in a way I could not have done alone. Thanks again Franklin!

Excellent tour! Franklin Williams is the consummate story teller sharing the real story/truth of our black history. He puts it all in perspective and challenges us all to contemplate and realize what we already know but has been white washed our entire lives. This is the history that needs to be taught in schools from a very young age continuing throughout our lives so we can appreciate the injustices and sacrifices made by the African Americans who were stolen from their country to enrich the elite in our country. He recommends other must see places in and around Charleston as well as interesting books to read and restaurants to savor.

We truly enjoyed our tour with Mr. Franklin. Everything about it was memorable, insightful, educational, and entertaining. This is the first of many tours I’d like to take but as a first time visitor to Charleston, SC we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. It was amazing to see so many of the preserved historical fixtures that still stand to this day there in Charleston and Mr. Franklin did an amazing job at giving the back story to just about any and everything there. One of the people on our tour had to check out of their hotel so Mr. Franklin didn’t get to take us to all the spots he wanted to but I will tell you, find time to take this tour while you are in Charleston. You will NOT be disappointed!

What a wonderful guide and teacher Franklin is! The two hour walk/ride tour was an only a mere entry point to the "Other Charleston". Franklin is so knowledgeable and passionate, you can't help but feel the urgency to discover more for yourself. As we walked around Charleston the day after our tour we looked past what the plaques and historical markers were saying and wondered what the real story was behind the beautiful homes "planters" who owned them. We counted 3 more auction blocks as we walked down Ashley Ave, were it not for learning about them on the tour we probably never would have noticed what they were. HIGHLY recommend spending some time on the Frankly Charleston tour!

I initially was looking to do a different tour, but wasn’t able to book during our short weekend in Charleston. So, I was referred to this tour, and I’m so glad that I was! Mr. Frank made a huge impact on my husband and I, and completely made this trip a most memorable one. I’ll never forget his wealth of knowledge and vigor for the subject matter. He challenged us and inspired us. You won’t be disappointed on your journey with Frankly Charleston.

We would give this tour more than 5 starts if possible! Frankly Charleston’s walking tour was the highlight of our visit. If you want to learn about the real history of Charleston, this tour is a must-do.
