The Best Restaurants Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"It’s all about the dogs at Franks, a longstanding hot dog and fast food joint that’s been open in San Luis Obispo since 1977. The interior looks like something stuck in a past decade, with a worn-in tile floor and red booths. There is an entire section of the menu just dedicated to hot dogs, with versions of the dog including a Chicago dog and a Polish sausage dog. Other dishes like burgers, a solid breakfast burrito, a hot pastrami sandwich, and mozzarella sticks are also on the menu here." - Rebecca Roland

Where to Eat Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO)

"Frank’s is far from being the single best culinary destination in all of San Luis Obispo County, but that’s okay. Located near a cluster of off-campus housing complexes, this breakfast-through-dinner spot has been serving up reliable breakfast burritos and namesake hot dogs (plus burgers, wraps, and more) for nearly half a century." - Farley Elliott

My new favorite burger place in slo. The service was incredible, food tasty and fresh plus they open at 6:30am and are local!!!

Jason Stillman

Google
The service was great. The girls behind the counter were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and there was plenty of open seating.

Google
Great hotdogs! I had a polish dog and my son had a sausage dog and both were amazing. We came back the next morning for the Sunday shake special and were not disappointed. Both got chocolate shakes after a day of partying at our family reunion and it hit the spot!

Ron Godbey

Google
An Old School style restaurant with really good comfort food 🌭 Hot Dogs and Hamburgers 🍔 with fries 🍟 and the usual sides. And chili and Cheese to take it to a new level!

Jim Canelo

Google
I had the polish dog with onions and jalapeño peppers...oh and mustard!! Delicious!!!

Google
this place has to be a front or something. how do you justify a $10 dog that is worse than a costco’s and a $12.50 burger that has more ketchup than meat? the people working there are nice, but everything else about this place (food, value, ambiance) is a travesty. skip!

Google
We got the breakfast burrito, it was delicious. It’s a good size burrito. The service is fast and the staff is very nice. I will go back again.

Google
We were really excited and had high hopes for this place but we definitely weren’t impressed. Even my boys who will eat just about ANYTHING weren’t too thrilled. We placed a to go order, and after traveling all day we were pretty hungry, but none of us ended up even finishing our food. The meat on the burger was extremely dry and the cheese was rubbery. The deep fried hot dogs weren’t deep fried at all, and my moms hot dog had the weirdest grayish green hue to it that we began debating if it was even okay to eat. The fried zucchini and mozerella sticks were pretty sad, and we didn’t end up with a single napkin, ranch, ketchup packet or anything else for our huge order. Maybe it’s better if you eat in? Not to happy that we just spent $99 dollars for food that sucked. On the bright side the breakfast burrito was big and okayish.

Yelp
Frank's Famous Hot Dogs is a true San Luis Obispo classic. I've been coming here since 1992, and it's remained consistently awesome, affordable, and delicious. Their breakfast burritos are fantastic--loaded with fluffy eggs, crispy chewy bacon, and melty cheddar cheese. The salsa can be a bit spicy for me, so I usually ask for it on the side--still enjoy it, just in moderation! Their chicken strips and fries are to die for, especially with an Ortega chili on top--super yum. It's an easy place to park, and they offer convenient delivery options. They're open until 9 p.m., but delivery seems to cut off extra early--which is a bit of a bummer if you're craving something later in the evening. Frank's is a great local business to support, and I hope they never change. A San Luis Obispo classic!

Yelp
What I learned from moving here is that this place is a local spot in SLO that has fallen off. That is sadly true. I ordered the chili cheese fries, soda and a LA style dog for $26.63. overpriced in my opinion. The hotdog was mid and the bun was soggy when it got to me so it fell apart when I ate it. I have never seen chili cheese fries like this in my whole life that came with whole beans. They tasted how they look unappetizing. The service was good and ambiance and restaurant was clean. There are better places in the area for food.

Yelp
I used to come here when I went to college and used to come for lunch weekly. I ordered a bacon blue dog and a hamburger. Both were delicious. My food arrived fast and fresh and with a smile. The girls at the register were very friendly. They had some cool music playing and the place was very clean. I will have to stop here again before I leave town.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. Well priced plenty of portions and has flavor that is beyond what you would expect from a small

Yelp
Go get a breakfast burrito with a wiener in it! Super clean, very fresh and delicious breakfast burrito. Perfect for a road trip stop!

Yelp
Open on New Years day! I occasionally come to Franks when I'm trapped at work for an ungodly amount of hours. I was definitely impressed they were open new years and also super thankful since my 30 min lunch break doesn't allow for me to go far from my work. I do love their shakes and appreciate the ability to preorder online
google avatar

Athena O.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Franks for ages and always loved the kraut dog. It was ok, but didn't taste as yummy as years ago. And the price was a shock at almost $10.
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
Had to run to SLO for an errand Friday and called in an order for the Breakfast Sandwich and Hash Browns for my coworker and I to share. Everything was finishing up right when I arrived and tasted delicious as always
google avatar

Randy R.

Yelp
Chicken Tenders Normally they're really crispy like jollie bee crunch... but I brought it back to office to watch some YouTube on a bigger screen and the crunch was not so crunchy when I got to the office... the chicken is not a salt lick fries are usually over salted with season all but I like the tendies here because it's quick fast and doesn't taste bland if that helps

Yelp
Good food and ready excellent service. Yes, it's hot dogs, hamburgers and fried foods which isn't always a super spectacular experience but the staff here do a wonderful job of great customer service and big thank you to Hector for all the help with our order today. I made a huge mess up and ordered something with pork unknowingly for my boyfriend who has pork allergy. I just didn't think to ask beforehand and he was able to help us fix it right away and was wonderful and so helpful. Really appreciate it and all the excellent knowledge on the food products here. Everything was really tasty and we loved everything we had. Would definitely come visit them again!

Yelp
Just go to Costco for hotdogs. Visited the Famous Franks in San Luis Obispo. Ordered two hotdogs, fries, mozzarella sticks and two drinks. All of it for $40. Literally the worst hotdogs I've ever had. If they are gonna charge $7.50 for a hotdog then make it worth it at least. Honestly, just got to Costco, they have much better hotdogs and it comes with a drink. I won't be back.
google avatar

Hugh P.

Yelp
Simply one of the best breakfast burritos I have ever tasted! Congrats to Hector and his team
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
I am only giving this place 2 stars because employees were great... The hot dogs in other hand was officially the worst I've ever eaten... they where flavorless and discolored like they where from 7-11 rollers down the street that where made yesterday... the cajun dog was even worst .. nothing cajun about it.. it was just strange and disgusting.... The chili dog was just chill water that made bun so soggy it was not edible... Have no clue how they place survived serving this stuff....

Yelp
Been in SLO 8 years and it's the first time I've ate at Franks. We went on a long mountain bike ride and it sounded amazing. Staff were all super nice. My chicken wrap was delicious! The chicken had a ton of flavor and was really moist. I love avocado and wrap was loaded. We also shared the chili cheese fries. Super cheesy and great tasting chili This will def be my new after mountain biking grub spot.

Yelp
I have known Frank's restaurant for quite a while. They're always quite friendly and professional. The food is excellent especially their fries. Their service is fast. I enjoy going there. I have invited others and I will go back again.

Yelp
REALLY BAD FOOD! Really disappointing meal! I ordered a cheeseburger which came with a special sauce which I assumed was similar to in and out or something similar. The sauce was a strange version of bbq sauce and was pouring out of the burger. :( the chili cheese fries had almost zero cheese! It wasn't good at all. I felt sick after coming here. A meal for two was almost $50 and it was terrible unfortunately. I didn't finish anything and it wasn't because I wasn't hungry. :/ I won't return.
google avatar

Thomas Jeffrey E.

Yelp
What the heck happened to Frank's Hot Dogs? They used to be so pleasant and really nice when you went inside of the restaurant. Did they change owners? It's none of the same guys that used to work here. Rude cashier, I was ignored when I asked if I needed a number or if they wanted my name. This isn't the same place it once was. People wonder why restaurants are closing time and again. This is exactly why. Treat people like crap and they won't come back. So sad!
google avatar

Marjo G.

Yelp
- cheese dog was not great, the bread was stale and tasted like cardboard. The cheese was definitely something pre-shredded and came from a package lol + Chicago dog was properly built with the pickles, relish, and celery salt The total for our 2-dog order was like $18. That didn't really match the quality of what I was expecting for that price. The folks who run this place are very lively and eager to bring you what you ask There is a parking lot on both sides of the restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating This place is definitely no frills and not that exciting which is unfortunate because SLO has lots of fun foods to offer

Yelp
After our daughter living down the street from this place, we finally made it to Frank's. I had the chili cheese dog and it did not disappoint. Have I had better? Sure. However, it was still pretty good. My wife had the cheese dog and my daughter tried the Frank's Dog and all were pleasantly surprised with a good meal. The onion rings were quite overpriced and not that great. Overall, I would give this place 4 stars.

Yelp
Stopped in for a hold me over, snack and to use restrooms. I was last here about four years for a breakfast burrito. This time I plunged in for a Chicago Dog, nothing like my in Chicago dog. Okay well at least try, thin frank maybe 5 to one, tasteless. A couple half sliced tomatoes, relish, and a dill pickle spear with small peppers. I added some yellow mustard. The problem was that the bun couldn't support the additional condiments. Either the frank or the pickle or the tomato or the relish or the combination created a soggy bun. This disintegrated as I attempted to enjoy the Chicago Dog. Nuf said. foodguy-martin

Yelp
So the place was nice and clean, and the people were nice, but the food was underwhelming for the price. I thought it would be a lot better since it's been standing since 1977. Also, I wasn't sure if the hotdogs are supposed to be pink on the inside or not? About $40 for two chili cheese dogs, chicken tenders and fries. Chicken tenders were overly fried and had no flavor /: kinda disappointing
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
The food menu is so diverse and not good on any of them. Service sub par. Just a standard dining room. Won't be seeing us going there.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Great service in this old school institute. Good quality grub that hits the spot. Really liked the snappy dogs and others loved the corn dogs. A fun stop.
google avatar

Elliot R.

Yelp
Honestly. Just look at my picture. This was $8.50 and it does not taste like good beef it taste like boiled chicken.
google avatar

Yelp
I decided to give "Franks Hotdogs" a try since I heard they were changing owners. I ordered a cheese dog and fries and sat to wait for food. Food arrived promptly and I ate while reading news. The restaurant was nearly empty 2:15 pm and 3/4's the way through my hotdog I noticed the color of the dog looked off, it had a greenish tint to the outside casing. Took out my phone flashlight, yeah, dog was two different colors. A worker watching me, asked if I needed a to go box? I then shared my discolored dog and got the reply, "I don't see anything wrong." I'm sorry, but this is not the Franks I first visited when my boys were little. I politely tossed the rest in trash and said goodbye to Franks.

Yelp
I've always passed by the restaurant on the way downtown and heard they had great breakfast burritos but have been skeptical to try it out because of the poor Yelp Reviews. I decided to finally give it a shot, and walking in I was greeted by the nice staff who seemed very energetic. It's a smaller sized restaurant that is red all over and gives major diner vibes. They had a good amount of options but I ultimately ordered the Double Dare Dog with fries. The bacon wrapped sausage seemed deep fried, which made it crispy and gave it a unique texture. The flavoring was great, but my only complaint is although there were two sausages there was still a lot more bread than meat, especially for the price. The fries were good, nice seasoning and good quantity. Franks gets too much hate on Yelp. I would definitely try it again. Maybe the breakfast burrito is better?

Wendy M.

Yelp
I love Franks, a true SLO staple! I've been coming here since I was a little kid so it's a super nostalgic place for me. Staff are always super friendly and the hotdogs and fries always hit the spot.

Nick M.

Yelp
I've been here twice recently and find the HotbDog to be excellent. There are a variety but I prefer the traditional Franks dog. The restaurant is clean and bright with tons of seating. It gives off an old-fashioned atmosphere. Service is fast and polite. I will be back on my next SLO visit.

Yelp
This place is classic and timeless! Love the dogs and this place holds a special place for the in-laws. We enjoy stopping by Frank's when we're in town and craving a solid weenie!! Stop being FRANK about your love for hot dogs! Kraut Dog @FranksFamousHotdogs Big weenies are better at Frank's! San Luis Obispo, CA

Yelp
I was excited to try the breakfast burrito because I've heard about it, but it was a complete disappointment and was also $14! It was filled with 3 day old dry potatoes and just gross. I can't remember a time when I didn't finish something, but I could not eat this. Sad, just sad that they would even sell that to someone.

Sarah D.

Yelp
Baconwrappedhotdogs That's it. That's all you need to know. Go and indulge yourself! The side of fries is of epic proportions and totally shareable.

A L.

Yelp
Wow, what a terrible breakfast and the vibes were quite chaotic, lack of a better word. Ordered 2 scrambled eggs, side of home fries, toast and a coffee. This literally had to been one of the worst breakfasts I've ever had. I've had better from cheap hotel continental breakfasts. I saw him pour the eggs from a juice jug, so not even real eggs and boy did they taste like it. Watery tasting and super bland, the only thing that resembled an egg was the yellow color they had. I doused them in salsa and hot sauce to try and make them palatable. The potatoes had to be from frozen/bagged as they had no crisp to them and were quite soggy. They had a decent seasoning on them though, all give them that. They only have wheat toast and it was barely buttered and it was so very dry. The coffee was luke warm, even though I showed up at 7am, so it should have been fresh, it was not. The whole time there, the man at the counter and the Hispanic staff yelled at one another loudly while mariachi music blasted from the back. I am a local and Frank's use to be the place to go for any meal, but I doubt I see myself coming back here ever again, especially for breakfast. I'm not kidding, worst eggs I've ever had. The only redeeming quality is their salsa. It is quite good but now I am less than 1/4 way through my meal and have gut rot and I just can't choke it down. $14 wasted here.

Jolene G.

Yelp
Very good Chile dog and regular dog. French fries huge and tasty. Service was very good. Bathrooms needed some attention. Would go again if in area.

B. C.

Yelp
I ordered 2 hotdogs, a burger, a breakfast burrito and fries which came to over $50! My adult son would not eat the hotdogs they looked green and completely unappetizing! The burrito was not good. The burger was fine. The fries had a slight taste of old grease. I grew up in SLO and Frank's was always a family favorite! I will never go there again and would not recommend it to anyone
google avatar

Samuel O.

Yelp
I dunno. I haven't been here in 15 years. I feel like it used to way better and cheaper (even for the time) and i don't remember it being in this old taco bell building? I just got 2 regular franks and i feel like they used to come plain. This time they had relish, onions, and mustard on them. Anyways, there was nothing bad about the food. It was good. But its basically just some hoffy or casper style hotdogs in some buns. Really expensive for what it is so minus one star. If you like hotdogs then you'll like this place. Kinda like that pinks hotdog place in L.A. but way less crowded.
google avatar

Terry C.

Yelp
Overall, 2.5 stars. It's been a while since we've eaten at Franks Famous Hotdogs. We had a craving for a good burger & hotdog, so we decided to head over to Franks. Perhaps the ownership has changed, as all the familiar faces we've seen here over the years, are gone. Our cashier was very friendly & upbeat. Yet, looking around the restaurant we noticed it wasn't as clean as usual, and furnishings are showing their age. The quality of the food seems to have slid downhill a bit. Our Bacon Cheese Hotdog contained one of the thinnest hot dogs I've seen in years. The portion of bacon was generous, as was the shredded cheese. The Mushroom & Swiss Burger patty was of a decent size. However, it was so greasy, the basket paper was soaked and the bottom bun was soggy & fell apart. It was dressed with about 3 mushrooms, and many half-grilled onions. The crinkle-cut French fries we usually look forward to, were cold and overdone. Overall, this visit was very disappointing.
google avatar

Gator G.

Yelp
I had not been here in a while, but I had a craving for a chili dog. I ordered the chili cheese dog and I was not disappointed. It was great with a heaping portion of thick chili over a long hot dog. I think the tomatoes that were in it made the difference. I live 25 miles to the north, but I cannot wait to go back. The service and the restaurant match the excellent food. A couple in the next booth were excited to see what I had and a mother and son in the next booth from them were excited to have ordered the same thing.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
I'd give it less stars if I could, worst hot dogs ever, flavorless, boiled, unseasoned, soggy bread. Don't go unless you like awful food
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
My first time here and unfortunately I probably won't make it a second time. I had a chili verde breakfast burrito but felt like it didn't have any flavor. My friend liked the food more than I did.
google avatar

Brett S.

Yelp
Hamburger, please. Hold the chunk of hair... I have been going to Frank Dog for the past 20+ years and it is what you would expect from a small college town: good food, priced well and in an old building. Today I met my family there for lunch and my oldest child (who is a little OCD about eating out), pulled a big chuck of hair out of his mouth after taking a bite from his hamburger. Not only did it ruin a $50 family lunch, but there is no way my son is going to eat at places like this again. I took the chunk of hair and showed it to the manager. I didn't ask for a refund as that would not have improved the situation, or for store credit because I will not be eating there anymore. None of their employees were wearing gloves or hairnets so I can see how it could easily happen. We won't be visiting this place again. Just gross.....
google avatar

Jan R.

Yelp
We were on a hunt recently to find a really great cheeseburger in SLO. We looked hi and lo. Frank's hands down is the best tasting and lowest priced cheeseburger we've had in a long, long time. The bonus find... Best fried zuccinni since 'zircles' of Hamburger Hamlet days!
google avatar

Evelyn R.

Yelp
Best place in San Luis Obispo to grab a great hotdog. Fries are seasoned and come with a side of ranch. Hotdogs are the kind that snap when you bite into them. I chose a Chicago dog which is my favorite. Comes with a large dill pickle slice, mustard, and onions. Quite large so only ate a few bites of my fries - so much food. They also serve burgers, chicken sandwiches and things like that. They have a kids menu for smaller appetites. It's nice to be able to sit outside during these times. Also, my order came out extremely fast so if you're trying to grab lunch quick this is your place.
google avatar

Janet Z.

Yelp
We stopped at Frank's for our very first time and I will say it was expensive for its worth. It was a sloppy burger over filled with lettuce and super greasy not to mention.
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
Food and service were both meh. I had the breakfast sandwich which was flavorless. Person at the counter spent more time socializing to coworkers than listening to my order which she got wrong. IT's disappointment as I used to live this place 10+ years ago. The quality of the food has slipped.

Cassidy B.

Yelp
I think 3 stars is a fair rating. The fried zucchini, fries, and onion rings were really good but the hotdogs were mid at best. Very friendly staff and quick service. also I felt the prices were a little high for the quality of the food.

Joshua N.

Yelp
I came to this restaurant for some food with the kids and ordered A franks hot dog and fries and a breakfast burrito the food was nothing amazing but it was filling flavor was mid but that's expected when you're in California.

Poppy C.

Yelp
I had a Chicago dog and fries . Food poisoning I was so sick will never return dog was discolored and had no snap. Terrible two thumbs down. Nice staff but do not recommend

Barry R.

Yelp
I think I just got robbed. I paid $15.00 for a hot dog and another few bucks for a Pepsi. It's always a bad sign when there are more people working then eating at a place. I feel bad because the staff seemed to really try. The food was just ok, not great and if your gonna call a place Frank's and your logo is a hot dog shouldn't it be good...or great!! Not weak and this place is weak. Really a heart break as I wanted it to be good. There are so many good place to eat in SLO. Sorry to leave a bad review. Maybe tourists like the gimmick.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
$20 for a breakfast burrito and coffee? That isn't inflation, it is bad business (& greed)! I used to love Frank's breakfast burrito, but over the years it has become smaller, more expensive, and less tasty. Also come on the coffee isn't even decent. There used to be 2 people working there at once. Now there are half a dozen people behind the counter laughing it up singing and dancing. I guess I'd be enjoying making that much money too! I don't know if they had a change in ownership or management, but it won't last.
