Fran’s - Review - Hackney - London - The Infatuation

"If you’re looking to romance your life by way of eggs and bacon, this all-day poster child for that distinct breed of gingham Hackney living is an excellent place to start. Between the ‘70s daydream tan leather booths and the server in a beret, Fran’s feels like the charming caff that a flighty, broke protagonist would own if the film ‘Four Weddings And A Rented Damson Madder Dress’ existed. There’s even an adjoining flower shop so you can eat a very satisfying full English while admiring pampas grass and debating whether a ketchup and chrysanthemum-scented candle should be a thing. It’s all very cool and charming, but more tasteful than tasty. The food at Fran’s satisfies and blurs into the background—an almost sweet lattice-top apple pie in a thin pool of cream, or a jacket potato you probably could have made at home but no one’s currently arranging a bouquet in your living room so this is better. The evening menu of pasta dishes follow a similar vein of home comforts cooking, but we like this place best during the day. Come for the aesthetic, stay for the Climpson’s filter coffee, and leave with a bouquet of flowers and the sincere belief that you might put up gingham curtains at home. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Food Rundown Full Breakfast A proper “good morning!” of a full English. The sausage has a slight tang to it that goes a treat with the earthiness of the mushrooms. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Apple Pie Apple pie counts as a nutritious breakfast. After all, there is fruit involved. We’re deeply charmed by the perfectly baked lattice top but the filling could be a touch sweeter. PlayMute video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Tagliatelle Al Ragù There’s something about the chunky carrot cubes and generous dusting of parmesan that gives this pasta dish a real home cooking feel. The kind of simple, happy cooking that should be accompanied by a cheek kiss from an aunt. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley" - Heidi Lauth Beasley

The location is lovely and has a lot of potential. I visited for breakfast with a group a few months ago and we waited around 45 minutes to be seated. We all ordered either the English breakfast or the vegetarian version, but unfortunately none of the meals met expectations. The food arrived cold and was not well prepared. There was only filter coffee available, the toast was white and served cold, and the eggs and sausages (including the lentil sausages) were underwhelming in both taste and texture. At around £20 per person, it felt overpriced for the quality. Based on this experience, I wouldn’t return for breakfast or recommend it.

Just found my new favourite restaurant, Fran’s on Wilton Way. Super friendly staff, great atmosphere and the food was amazing, plus great value. If you want genuine authentic Italian food, definitely pay a visit. Highly recommend the White veal ragu, steak and the onion farinata (homemade, chickpea flour bread, gluten free). Intend to visit again shortly - loved it.

Very poor English Breakfast. One single slice of overcooked bacon. Toast was so pale it was barely toasted and came pre-buttered. Terrible fried egg. Would have preferred to have given feedback in person and frankly refused to eat or pay for the meal but the FOH was giving the feeling they were put upon by having customers to serve.

Went there for breakfast. The quality of the food is substandard and overpriced, the only option is a fry-up (veggie or standard), which is served with white toast and tastes a bit bland. Only filter coffee.

Setting and location very charming but food is lacking, despite the menu giving the impression otherwise. Linguine and aubergine dishes were pretty bland and side salad looked like it was out of a bag. The chicken livers and tortelloni were great but other dishes were very average. Breakfast here is a different story - more reliable and flavourful.

A wonderful warm restaurant operated by a local couple who have bought their love for hospitality into every aspect of the space. The Natural Wine selection gives you a chance to try some classic Italian grapes served in a new, affordable and accessible way. The food was like a home cooked meal that you would get served by your Nonna. Complimenti!

Only been once so far, for dinner, but will definitely be back. Nice small menu of simple but well prepared Italian dishes and a few glasses (mainly Italian) of wine. Lovely personal service and a great transformation of the place compared to its previous life as footnote (or William Hill if you remember that far back). Great addition to the street.

Delicious pasta!! We had the gnocchi with Gorgonzola and radicchio and the tagliatelle with ragu - both amazing. Proper homemade pasta, which felt really hearty. The portions were a good size too, we left feeling perfectly satisfied, not absolutely stuffed. The staff were really attentive and the service was speedy, even on a busy Friday night! Will definitely come back to try some more of their pasta dishes.
