Fran’s - Review - Hackney - London - The Infatuation

"If you’re looking to romance your life by way of eggs and bacon, this all-day poster child for that distinct breed of gingham Hackney living is an excellent place to start. Between the ‘70s daydream tan leather booths and the server in a beret, Fran’s feels like the charming caff that a flighty, broke protagonist would own if the film ‘Four Weddings And A Rented Damson Madder Dress’ existed. There’s even an adjoining flower shop so you can eat a very satisfying full English while admiring pampas grass and debating whether a ketchup and chrysanthemum-scented candle should be a thing. It’s all very cool and charming, but more tasteful than tasty. The food at Fran’s satisfies and blurs into the background—an almost sweet lattice-top apple pie in a thin pool of cream, or a jacket potato you probably could have made at home but no one’s currently arranging a bouquet in your living room so this is better. The evening menu of pasta dishes follow a similar vein of home comforts cooking, but we like this place best during the day. Come for the aesthetic, stay for the Climpson’s filter coffee, and leave with a bouquet of flowers and the sincere belief that you might put up gingham curtains at home. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Food Rundown photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Full Breakfast A proper “good morning!” of a full English. The sausage has a slight tang to it that goes a treat with the earthiness of the mushrooms. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Apple Pie Apple pie counts as a nutritious breakfast. After all, there is fruit involved. We’re deeply charmed by the perfectly baked lattice top but the filling could be a touch sweeter. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Tagliatelle Al Ragù There’s something about the chunky carrot cubes and generous dusting of parmesan that gives this pasta dish a real home cooking feel. The kind of simple, happy cooking that should be accompanied by a cheek kiss from an aunt." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

Setting and location very charming but food is lacking, despite the menu giving the impression otherwise. Linguine and aubergine dishes were pretty bland and side salad looked like it was out of a bag. The chicken livers and tortelloni were great but other dishes were very average. Breakfast here is a different story - more reliable and flavourful.

Just found my new favourite restaurant, Fran’s on Wilton Way. Super friendly staff, great atmosphere and the food was amazing, plus great value. If you want genuine authentic Italian food, definitely pay a visit. Highly recommend the White veal ragu, steak and the onion farinata (homemade, chickpea flour bread, gluten free). Intend to visit again shortly - loved it.

Only been once so far, for dinner, but will definitely be back. Nice small menu of simple but well prepared Italian dishes and a few glasses (mainly Italian) of wine. Lovely personal service and a great transformation of the place compared to its previous life as footnote (or William Hill if you remember that far back). Great addition to the street.

A wonderful warm restaurant operated by a local couple who have bought their love for hospitality into every aspect of the space. The Natural Wine selection gives you a chance to try some classic Italian grapes served in a new, affordable and accessible way. The food was like a home cooked meal that you would get served by your Nonna. Complimenti!

Wonderful café/restaurant. Several breakfasts and dinners at Fran’s in the past couple of months with friends & family, we come back for the nice easy relaxed vibe, the genuinely warm welcome & attentive service (thank you Fran, George and the rest of the lovely team!) but especially for the delicious freshly cooked food. Highly recommended.

Popped in here on Sunday for some drinks and snacks. Not the warmest of welcomes. The guy spent so long trying to persuade us to go to a place further along the street it was quite off-putting, verging on rude. It would have been better to just give us some menus and say "Sit down, have a look and if there's nothing you fancy, not a problem". Or, if you're in the process of closing up - just tell us!! The waitress was lovely and friendly. Ended up choosing a BLT, coffee and bloody Mary. The BLT was tasty. I'm told the filter coffee was good. My bloody Mary was in a small glass and had too much ice but was ok. The flower shop is a nice touch. I liked the decor, diner style leather banquette seating and cute half curtains in the window. The toilets weren't very clean. All in all a bit disappointing. The menu looked great but I'm not sure we'd go back. You only get one chance to impress, Mr Man blew it.

Love this place. The breakfasts are fab proper full English where the quality produce really shines through, so proper quality bacon and sausage, homemade baked beans and hash and onions browns. Not surprising really as Fran’s deli just up the road is a staple for us too, bacon n avocado bap mmmmmmm

The food description on the menu makes it sound exquisite but it lacks flavour. It’s very plain and doesn’t taste anything special. My friends and I had 3 starters and two mains and I couldn’t tell which one was which. They all had the same dull taste. Going to the loo is a mission since the tables and chairs are displayed in a sort of maze with very narrow pathways. The service was average, bordering on passive aggressive. We had different dishes and some of us didn’t drink alcohol and it was not possible to split the bill, so we all had to pay the same amount. I also left smelling like the food and will probably need to air my clothes for a whole week to get rid of it! Don’t recommend. Definitely not going back.
