Chicago’s best Italian beef sandwiches | Eater Chicago

"Freddy’s showcases the power of giardiniera. The mix of carrots, celery, olives, and sport peppers perfectly complements the beef served at this mom-and-pop grocer and deli, which has been operating in Cicero since 1968." - Eater Staff

Where to Eat Italian Food in Chicago

"Though the name suggests that pizzas are the main attraction, Freddy’s slings much more than just pies. Cicero residents line up at owner Giuseppe Quercia’s grocer and deli to stock up on Italian meats and goods and also order hot food. The menu features thick Sicilian-style pizzas, housemade meatballs, pastas, calzones, gelato, Italian ice, and more. It’s cash only, so bring some bills. Call 708-863-9289 to order." - Ashok Selvam, Eater Staff

Tim Flores and Genie Kwon's Chicago City Guide

"Freddy's Pizza is right outside of the city in Cicero, [Tim's] hometown. It's a small Italian grocery store that sells everything from imported Italian ingredients to housemade pasta. They also sell prepared food at the counter, along with housemade bread and salumi. This is that hometown mom-and-pop shop you love to see. It's always on the list for friends to check out when they're visiting from out of town." - Tim Flores and Genie Kwon

I stopped by Freddy’s yesterday and tried a few things—overall, a great experience with just one miss. I had the Italian Sub, and it was absolutely awesome. The giardiniera inside added a great spicy kick, which I really liked. I also appreciated that they didn’t include prosciutto—it kept the flavors cleaner and more balanced. The bread was soft with a classic hoagie-like taste, which worked perfectly with the sandwich. I also tried the Chicken Milanesa, which was delicious. The chicken was juicy and tender, and the breadcrumbs had just the right amount of seasoning—really well done. The only disappointment was the jar of mixed olives. The flavor was flat and underwhelming—I’d definitely skip that next time. Next visit, I’m absolutely getting another sandwich, probably trying one of the hot dishes, and maybe grabbing a small Italian ice to finish things off. The deli’s in a pretty colorful neighborhood—lots of loud music and cars with hydraulics rolling through. Felt like something out of a 1980s movie. Definitely adds character to the experience.

I grew up eating here during my school days. Every time I visit, it brings me back home with all the great memories. The food is always fresh and consistently delicious.

The experience at Freddy's pizza was amazing the staff was so friendly and so helpful they even gave us samples of their meats I would definitely be going back to this place when I'm back in Chicago thanks for showing Philly some love. Go Birds.

Google
They need to have a bigger location. All their offerings are excellent. However their site is small and always too busy. Being busy is a sign of how good they are. I always come back, when I am not in a hurry! I went back, I took a picture of the Calamari Slices we got. They are amazing! I keep going back for them!

Google
I was left speechless the moment I walked in gelato beckoned from the left, rich Italian spices and gourmet foods lined the right, and straight ahead, an irresistible spread of pizza, fresh bread, and decadent desserts revealed a true hidden gem.

This small italian grocer makes some of the best subs in Chicgoland. It was packed for being a Friday lunchtime in a Cicero neighborhood corner. One thing to note is that this a CASH ONLY establishment. With that said, the prosciutto sub is a classic. Served on a foot long baguette; the crusty yet soft bread absorbs all the juices from the hot giardeneria and its toppings. The fresh mozzarella slices are ample and creamy. But the star is the salty and nutty prosciutto, that is so flavorful, it easily cuts through the bread and toppings. This is arguably one of the best sub sandwiches in the metro area. Also tried a slice of their pan style sausage pizza, which was cheesy, salty, crisp, chewy and meaty. Not quite deep-dish but was still a huge treat. The single slice is a full meal imo. The prices are fair if not quite economical!! Well worth the visit. All the staff and owner are friendly and accomodating. Eat in their detached dining hall for the full experience!

This place is a gem! They make very tasty pizza . I ordered a large pepperoni thick crust pizza. It was delicious! The outside eating space is nicely organized and decorated. The prices are very reasonable. I would highly recommend this place for great food!

Yelp
CASH ONLY!!!!! Decided to stop in for lunch after an interview around the Cicero neighborhood. Super packed even on a weekday. Came in with no cash so was thinking of hitting another spot. But the employee didn't let me leave empty, he gave a couple samples of the gelato and I was hooked. Ended up running to pull cash. Ordered: -Soppressata pizza slice- classic Italian style pizza, they didn't skimp on the cheese or soppressata. Soppressata was kinda like an upscale pepperoni. Next time I think I'll try a slice of the sausage or calamari pizza. -vodka gnocchi- took this to-go. Gnocchi feen here. Consistency was perfect, pillows of clouds, melts in ur mouth. Sauce was nice too. -pistachio and hazelnut gelato- natural flavors of pistachio and hazelnut really came thru. Texture was great(mine kinda melted on the way home so a little icy on top but still amazing). Very similar to the gelato I remember having in Italy. It's also a nice market where u can get Italian groceries and fresh meats and cheeses.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. Everything is excellent. That's the one problem, you walk in and order right to left. I have missed so many things because I ordered so much already. Like the pizza it's far left. I never tried it. Freddy's is a hidden treasure. It might be in Cicero but it's a Chicagoland gem
google avatar

Raffaela G.

Yelp
This hidden local gem is phenomenal, located at the corner of 16th and 61st Ave in Berwyn .. this just proves to you that if your food is good enough they will find you even if it is surrounded by residents Parking isn't the best but worth trying to find a spot...with all their Italian specials, and pizza . I'm a total fan of them. Their homemade Italian ices and gelato hit the spot anytime of the year. As you are waiting for your food. You can shop in their Italian aisles for all your cooking necessities. As the summer approaches you can also eat outside where they provide a patio where you can enjoy their food .....Thank you Freddy's I have not been disappointed in the years that I've been going there...
google avatar

Kirk B.

Yelp
A friend told me about this neighborhood gem. I'm blown away by the friendly atmosphere and staff. If you're looking for something special and authentic this is the place to visit. Everything made in-house and freshly prepared with care and love

Yelp
Food is good & not a complaint about that. What I do not appreciate for the cost: the cold fish salad of octopus, shrimp, muscles: w/ the takeout quart size order: more than a 1/3 of the container is the marinated juices, yet the pricing is high. A bit of a shock factor. For the pricing: should have more fish than oil marinade.

Yelp
With real deli's Italian or otherwise you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere like Freddy's these days. Tucked away on a non-descript Cicero residential street corner Freddy's harkens back to the old days when men were men, sheep were sheep, and deli's were deli's. Everything about it is old school neighborhood deli. The ambience is s real and not manufactured. That's probably because the owners and employees most have of whom have been there for double digit years are real as they come. They scream customer service, neighborhood true and 'we take no bullshit'. They make it the real deal. I remember during covid their strict adherence to health rules for the safety of their employees and customers alike. The owner could come out and enforce the six people six foot apart rule with an iron fist! It shows they care. The care also shows their offerings. FRESH pastas and numerous other dishes like cutlets and Chicken Parmesan, sausage n peppers and homemade soups just to name a few set out in front of you and prepped with live. Even their namesake homemade pizza by the slice is exceptional. The dish's they offer would cost you a pretty penny elsewhere. Sure you can go get a few things for a few cents less in some other joint but bit will be nowhere near the quality Freddy's offers. Nowhere near! In the small grocery store shelves stocked with imported and homemade local Italian staples and delicacies you will find no where else. Fresh name brand quality deli meats and cheeses and bakery fresh breads like pepperoni bread and soft Italian loaves. Not to forget the variety of homemade sausages and hard salamis from Calabrese to other regional delicacies. After dinner in one of their two enclosed patio rooms one heated for chilly days and one screened in for warm summer breezes don't forget to try dessert. The gelato bar and pastry offerings and outta this world! All of this fits nicely into one room smaller than most Chicago 'frunch rooms'. Bring cash as wisely they are cash only. Every dime you spend will be well spent and I guarantee you WILL be back again! I'm not a side note a must try is their fresh mozzarella better than nonna can make. Don't miss out on this place it's worth the trip and the surprisingly small wait. They run a tight ship and get lunch goers in and out.

Yelp
A nice little italian market with fresh made food and pizza's, the artichokes are quite tasty never had them this way. i got there around 10.00 am which was a little early for food choices, i should have gone around 11ish, i ate the chicken parm which was good and the artichokes, i will be back
google avatar

Yelp
Always good food here and friends service. The only downside is they only accept cash and there are no prices.
google avatar

Yelp
My first visit at Freddy's Pizza is really great. The place feels warm and family-like. You feel welcome right away. The staff is very nice and quick to help. We got all we needed. I had a pepperoni pizza. It was so good, crispy crust, tasty sauce, and lots of toppings. The garlic knots were hot and soft, a nice side. They also have pasta and salads. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience, and I can't wait to return and try more of their menu!
google avatar

Yelp
I don't understand the love everyone has for this place. The pizza was absolutely mediocre. You wait in a line for ages only to wish for better.
google avatar

South S.

Yelp
The food and service here are always top notch, fresh and homemade what more can you ask for. I especially love the pizza.

Rose A.

Yelp
Been going here since a teen and now my grandkids love it too Best food in the area. Always stop for the italian ice the fresh sausage is the best
google avatar

Nancy A.

Yelp
I been coming here since 2017 and it's great! Friendly people and great food! Bring cash. The gelato always hits the spot in the summer.
google avatar

Francis L.

Yelp
Their pizza is goddamn delicious. The whole store is fabulous. It's for Italians by Italians & really just very Italian. The chocolate rocher gelato is also mind blowing. Could seriously eat your face off here. Outstanding.

Robert A.

Yelp
Amazing food served by wonderful people that have been doing it for years. I always get an Italian Beef and pizza but they have so much more fresh home made Italian food available. They also have a small but fairly complete sea of Italian groceries. Highest recommendation possible!!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
Consistently amazing. Hardest working staff ever yet friendly and helpful. Meatball sandwiches are the BEST
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious!! The atmosphere was very cozy and neighborhood like feel! The staff was very friendly and welcoming! We will be back!

Yelp
Long live Freddy's! I'm embarrassed to say that this had been on my list of places to try for a decade. Now, I deeply regret having wasted all the time I could have been gorging on amazing Italian comfort foods. My wife I and split a sandwich and the biggest portion of chicken parmigiana I have ever seen. We ate half and took the second half home along with one of their premade cheese lasagnas in their refrigerator case. Great red sauce. We finished with some terrific gelato. I can't wait to return and try more.
google avatar

Harry S.

Yelp
My wife and I were here last week and we enjoyed our food and especially the gelato. The only problem I had is they went crazy with the dressing on the sandwich the oil soaked through the paper wrapper in seconds and made a mess. It had so much dressing I think they made a mistake and added it twice.
google avatar

Elaine W.

Yelp
Freddy's is one of my families all time favorites. Make sure you bring cash, it is cash only! They have outdoor seating, as well as an enclosed area, but it's really more of a takeout restaurant. It's not really a place for aesthetics, you're there for the food!! I highly recommend the artichokes, lasagna, and gnocchi in vodka sauce. The portions they give are enough for a few healthy servings, and make sure you get bread for dipping! And I always have room for dessert here because they also have amazing gelato, pistachio is always my go to! 10/10 this is a place I will go to forever.
google avatar

Dominick V.

Yelp
A REALLY wonderful deli! They have EVERYTHING! I bought antipasti, pecorino cheese and guanciale. I couldn't be happier.
google avatar

Allan M.

Yelp
A really great Italian deli, grocery store, pizza, Italian ice, and gelato place all rolled into one. I don't think you can go wrong, with anything you get here. They even have an enclosed room to the side you can sit down in to eat your food before leaving, if you want to. They also had a good looking deli case, though I didn't get any of that to go. Maybe another time? I also noticed they serve Italian beef, but I haven't yet tried theirs. Maybe I'll get that, another time. The only thing that'd make this place better(and get to 5 stars), is if they took cards and weren't cash only. Ah well, this is a very strong 4 star review that is more like 4.75 stars. If they ever took cards, they'd get that 5th star. I can't think of any negatives, except that. Is it great that old school businesses like this, have hung on to this day. This place does blend right into a residential neighborhood, and is a little out of the way, but you shouldn't overlook this place. It's totally worth the stop.

Frankie V.

Yelp
As you heard they're the best! We froze holiday left overs and had them mid January and it was still so delicious. Their lasagna, sauce, meatballs, sausages everything! I heard someone get to the check out after loading up on things saying wait a minute let me see if I can afford this first then I'll take some more! You want everything g you see here and it's all good! Sausage and peppers sandwich with marinara and gelato is one of the best treats!

Brenda D.

Yelp
I used to come here all the time as a child.. I thought this place was amazing... now is an adult this place is still amazing

Yelp
Got to Love Freddy's a Cicero and Chicago ICON the food is fresh, service is professional and the place is clean and all the staff is friendly they serve the best Gelato and Italian Ice in the city. I highly recommend it will not disappoint.

Carol M.

Yelp
Freddy's is so much more than pizza. It is a deli/grocery/diner that you have to experience to appreciate. I wish I was lucky enough to live local, I'd be there once a week. There are so many wonderful things to try. I was having a party with 28 people. I brought home Italian beef and l'arancini. The beef was so tender and perfectly seasoned. Probably the best beef in the city. I am a huge fan of the l'arancini, (cheesy rice balls) too. Call a couple days in advance if you are ordering a lot of food. The woman I spoke to was very helpful in suggesting quantity and provided guidance on heating the food. Everyone raved about the food. Freddy's made hosting a gathering pretty easy.

Yelp
Thought my last review was more recent than 2013 - which makes this review even more meaningful. Here's some directions for ordering food at Freddy's: 1. Place menu on wall. 2. Grab a dart. 3. Throw dart at menu. 4. Order the dish it landed on. Regardless of what one orders, the food is terrific. On my recent visit, I ordered a Pork Tenderloin sandwich, and it was simply awesome. Of course, I also picked up an order of Chicken Marsala with a side of potatoes AND some Gnocchi in Vodka sauce for later consumption. A day or so after my stop there, I was going to a friend's house for a get together of about a dozen people or so. The house is in the boon docks and there were a couple of out of towners there, so I was thinking it would be nice to bring some Chicago type food to the gathering. I called Freddy's and asked if they could put together a three-foot Italian Sub for me in an hour and they gladly complied. Amongst the wonderfully grilled/smoked brisket, oven baked potatoes, grilled asparagus and a variety of other delicious dishes sat the Italian three-footer with the dressing on the side (as suggested). When we all finished eating, there wasn't a speck of that sandwich left. Absolutely outstanding!

Maria H.

Yelp
TOP TIER! Literally the best italian food that I've had. Everything on their menu is so delish. A special s/o to their homemade gelato. The only downside is that's it's cash only, so don't forget to hit the atm beforehand
google avatar

Emil P.

Yelp
This is my no doubt my favorite place in Chicago! This is when they say hidden gem! Since my coworker showed me this place in 2014, I'm regular here and feel like at home, employers at the front( and there is many of them) work here in 2023 I saw them today, they are one big family. Very lovely Italian couple run this place with so much love and quality food on the 1st place. There should be a role model for everyone working, especially in restaurant business. Grazie!
google avatar

Caitlyn C.

Yelp
What looks like a small corner store, happens to be one of Chicago's best kept secrets! Freddy's is a traditional Italian deli in the Cicero/Berwyn neighborhood, that is literally life changing. Some of our family favorite are the gnocchi w/vodka sauce, aracini, chicken limone, caprese salad, pizza, pistachio/Oreo/biscotti gelato, any many more. The staff is always so nice and on top of their game, ready to serve you. They recently expanded their dining room, and there is now a nice space to enjoy your food nice and fresh. We usually take our home, and it taste just as great each time. When you visit, don't be afraid to try something new because it is all so delicious. If there is a line, that ok, there is ALWAYS a line. Be patient, and just think about the gelato reward on your way out.
google avatar

Bobblehead B.

Yelp
Freddy's is an old school Cicero-Chicago treasure. An Italian deli-pizza-beef and sausage heaven for those that love Chicago style food. An absolute must! Great service in a place that is usually full of customers.
google avatar

Cookie W.

Yelp
From the moment I walked in the door. I knew I was going to love this place!! The smell brought back from my childhood days shopping with my parents at the neighborhood Italian stores drifted to my nose!! Crowded, loud and a counter filled with goodies that looked like they were made by my Nana DeRose. I bought a few items and then spotted the Napoletana Pizza!! My husband and I ordered 2 huge slices to eat in the restaurant section of the store. ITALIAN!! They're speaking ITALIAN....music to my ears. Yes, I love FREDDY'S and I intend to go back and try all of their items....and I will be ordering specialty catering from them for the holidays.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Super good and home made restaurant vibe. I would recommend to anyone just wanting pizza

Yelp
I can't get enough of places like this, places that hearken back to another era, and that are still going strong after many years in business. The food here is excellent; obviously prepared with care and decades of expertise. This is an old school Italian deli, with prepared salads, sandwiches and pasta to take home, a nice offering of pantry and grocery items, and food that you just have to order to eat then and there, as it looks so good. We walked in and it was busy and a little confusing to the first time visitor, but the friendly people staffing the place called out and offered assistance, and we were well taken care of. We ordered a prosciutto sub and the mother of all Chicken Parmesans; seriously, we had leftovers to take home and could barely finish those. Both were deeply satisfying and just yummy. The take home lasagne from the case was equally delicious, as was the gelato we failed to resist. We sat outside on the patio, as the day was warm, and it was just lovely, and indoor seating is also available. I don't have an Italian nonna to cook for me, but that's ok. I have Freddy's. I never even tried the pizza. I have to go back.

Yelp
Business travel to Chicago, find this restaurant at Yelp. Perfect taste and service, love them!!!

William B.

Yelp
You might not think of a grocery store for dinner. You should, if you live anywhere near Freddy's. The homemade pasta, chicken dishes and pizza are some of the best in Chicagoland. Staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. Next time you are in Cicero stop in and I'm sure you will be pleased.

Agustin M.

Yelp
Delicious food. Always busy. Great selection of prepared foods. The Arrancini is my favorite.

Yelp
Freddy's is the best. We have been going for over 40 years. Generations of our family have been going and continue to go. Joe and his wife have been staples in the community since buying the place. Some of us love the pizza, some of us love the Italian ice, but we can agree we all love Freddy's. They treat us like family there.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
The best! Chicken Lemone, pizza , rice balls , you can't beat this place! Authentic Italian food. Bring cash , they do not take CC!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
I love Freddy's meatball sandwich and gelato. Most of their pastas and chicken dishes are delicious as well. Marinara and pepperoni bread are top notch!
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
Simply put, it's like going back to the kitchens of my mother and aunts, now all gone. Freddy's is fantastic, original recipe, Italian food. The Chicken Limone and the Rapini are incomparable. Do yourself a favor and visit Freddy's.
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
Freddys is a unique experience, part Italian Grocery Store, part Restaurant. I had the chicken Marcella and my guest had chicken parmigiana. They were both very good. I also had a fried artichoke, which was outstanding! My tip is to look out for a parking spot as you drive up. It is cash only.
google avatar

Stan M.

Yelp
Here is an honest review. This place is mediocre at best these days. This place is living off its past reputation.
google avatar

Tony F.

Yelp
My wife grew up in Cicero/Berwyn and 46 years later they still know her name and we get to eat here 1 or maybe 2xs per year depending on when we are in town. She took me here for our first date. So you can imagine the pressure of taking an Italian kid who grew up in a family Italian restaurant on a first date to an Italian market/ restaurant. The food here is fantastic and there is a variety of great Italian dishes and just pick something you think looks good and go with it. Seriously, over the last 15 years, I think I have had almost everyone of their dishes they offer unless it's one of their specials that they don't serve regularly. The pizza is fantastic. Their breaded pork tenderloin sandwich is something legends are made of. I prefer it with red sauce and hot peppers. I know lots of people who like it with gravy. All about preference. I could go on and on and on. If you were thinking about going here, just go. Bring cash! Cash only. Oh and don't forget to get the gelato. You will thank me later.

Big Nev Da G.

Yelp
Classic authentic Italian, made with love. The gnocchi is to die for. Got most of the dishes on display with a popular Italian ice and gelato selection available as well. Not to mention the grocery aisles. A classic Chicago area spot.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Excellent food, authentic Italian cuisine and outstanding gelato! I have been going there for a long time and the food is incredible and the owners are there on the front lines and making sure everyone is enjoying their meals. Best Italian food in the area!

Alyssa I.

Yelp
Whenever anyone asks me for a good Italian place in the area, I tell them to go to Freddy's because it's the best Italian restaurant ever, and they even have a store in their shop for Italian goods. My family has been eating at Freddy's for decades, and everyone loves it so much. If you're in the Chicagoland area, you have to go to Freddy's! I especially love their gnocchi and vodka sauce! Just make sure you have CASH when you go.
google avatar

Nallely G.

Yelp
Family owned and operated and it shows, you walk in and it feel like you're at someone's house, the food is delicious, there's something for everyone. The Lemon chicken is my favorite, my kids love the pastas. Cash only but they also have an ATM. Great value for the portions
google avatar

Patricia J.

Yelp
I started coming to Freddy's when I was three. I'm now 62 & the food has always been delicious. First it was the Italian lemonade. Then it was the pizza. After that it was the Gelato & the Italian sub sandwiches. I haven't lived in the area for decades, but I always come to Freddy's for the food. Next I will try the new dishes! I recommend that you do the same.

Pat S.

Yelp
This place is the best All home made service excellent Nothing bad comes out of this place I was in town for a week and ate there 5 days it was that good
