Our Favorite New Places of 2021

"To commemorate Black History Month in Britain, a mural of Frederick Douglass was unveiled prior to October 2020. The black and white painting was the work of a local graffiti artist who goes by the moniker of @TrenchOne. But why would an artwork celebrating an American statesman appear in the capital of Scotland? The illustration is located a stone’s throw away from the Union Canal. During the 1840s, the world-renowned social reformer, who would go on to become known as “Scotland’s anti-slavery agent”, took up residence just a couple of doors down at 33 Gilmore Place. A few years earlier, he had escaped enslavement in Maryland and was now on a legal crusade sponsored by the American-Anti-Slavery Society to campaign against the enslavement of people. Over the next few years, he would cross the United Kingdom and Ireland giving lectures to promote the end of slavery. Douglass visited the city of Edinburgh on numerous occasions during this time. His talks were always well attended with numbers in the thousands. After one particularly rousing speech given at The Assembly Rooms in The New Town, the mantra, “send back the blood-stained money!” was adopted. This phrase was in reference to the Free Church of Scotland receiving donations from slave-owning plantations in America. This rallying cry became so popular that it was suggested that it be carved onto the rocks of Salisbury Craigs in Holyrood Park. Douglass continued to tour the country throughout the 1840s, he later took residence at Gilmore Place and it acted as a base of operations. After his emancipation, he had his surname changed from Bailey to Douglass to commemorate his newfound freedom, and to pay homage to his time spent in Scotland. The name Douglass came from a character in Scottish writer Walter Scott’s novel “The Lady of the Lake.” He had this to say about the city: “You will perceive that I am now in Edinburgh. It is the capital of Scotland, and is justly regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. I never saw one with which for beauty elegance and grandeur to compare it. I have no time even had I the ability to describe it. The Monument to Sir Walter Scott, on Princes Street is just one conglomeration of architectural beauties. The Calton Hill, Salisbury Craggs and Arthur Seat give the city advantages over any city I have ever visited in this or in your country. I enjoy every thing here which may be enjoyed by those of a paler hue—no distinction here. I have found myself in the society of the Combes, the Crowe’s and the Chamber’s, the first people of this city and no one seemed alarmed by my presence.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

It's been a really good experience! The room (room 1) was very clean and cozy, looked just like the photos, the wc was separated from the shower and they were a bit small, but for the prize, it was super comfortable. They gave us clean towels daily and there was gel and shampoo. Also it was within walking distance from the city center and with lots of nice cafes near for breakfast. They also let me check in earlier because I had problems with my flight, and the service was very nice and helpful! :))

Impossible to sleep. The noise from the busy street ( cars, lorries) was unbearable ....the whole night cars passed . You had the impression that they were driving through the room. I never slept worse in a hotel. And since there was nobody present impossible to complain. The bathroom was not integrated but opposite the corridor.

The noise level from the busy street is unbearable. Impossible to sleep in this place. It might quality as the worst I ever stayed at, but should I write something positive it was clean. If you are desperate, take something else. It is not worth it.

If you are not used to sleep on the street, don't choose this place. It has walls and a roof but the noise level makes it impossible to sleep so why do you pay for a bed. Avoid it. I did stay with my friend and under her name. Why would I review a place I didn't stay at.

If you're looking for luxury and top quality this isn't it. Beds and decor mediocre to the point that my husband left early. However I slept fine. The room could be cleaner and smarter but there are lots of things in it's favour. Spacious room for two with pretty much everything you could need (see photos) except perhaps a few drawers. Great shower and warm and quiet room. Very secure. Only 5 minutes walk from loads of great little restaurants and cafés. Super cinema round the corner and easy to get to main tourist spots. The Meadows and canal cycle on yr doorstep.

Amazing for the price!! The host was very helpful and me and my friends felt very comfortable staying here. We are 3 18 year old girls so security was a big thing for us and our room was very secure with 3 levels of locks / codes / keys. The room was perfect for our 2 night stay and the location was good. Beds were comfortable and the welcome pack was useful with things to do and places to eat. Would come again!!

The room my partner and I were in was lovely. Stayed just before Christmas and couldn’t ask for a better location, close to a few supermarkets so easy to pick up dinner/snacks barely a 5 minute walk. The room was lovely had a TV and a hot water jug. The bathroom was modern and shower was fantastic. The real stand out was the staff, found them to be responsive, highly accommodating and (most importantly) friendly. Absolutely would stay again!

Overall great stay. Clean and more comfortable than I'd thought it would be from the photos. Two fairly comfortable double/ queen beds. Window opens wide for air. Bathroom is great for American folks (good size with single faucet sink and large shower with reliable hot water). Shampoo and conditioner in shower. Not sure how the heat works since it wasn't cold when we visited. Teak kettle with instant coffee and tea provided. Hangers in room. Check-in directions were a bit unclear but we managed our way through the three doors with codes to our room. It is about a thirty minute walk from old town center. Plenty of restaurants five minutes away. Would stay here again.
