An Eater’s Guide to Bentonville, Arkansas, the Home of Walmart | Eater

"A storied local steakhouse founded in 1970 by a traveling couple, known for its smoked prime rib, Old-South charm, and colorful founder lore (including the owner famously mowing the lawn and smoking meat on site); though ownership and the name have changed over time, the spot remains a must-visit for fans of classic smoked-steak cooking and local history." - Emily Blackshear

This is our second time here and each - an amazing experience! Tiffany was our waitress- very attentive and everything came out perfect in timing our food and drinks, we got Taste of Hickory Inn for 2 & Goat cheese fondue appetizer. Generous in portion for the price $$$ One final comment; the manager asked about our experience as leaving and that felt nice because they show how much they care about the experience.

Amazing Grace…. We had such a fantastic experience here! Our server was absolutely amazing — not only super attentive and professional, but also had a great sense of humor that made the night even more enjoyable. The food was incredible — we tried the steak sandwich, The Bee Gees poutine, and the risotto, and every dish was packed with flavor and beautifully prepared. The drinks were just as impressive, with well-balanced cocktails that paired perfectly with the meal. We’ll definitely be coming back and highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for great food, drinks, and top-notch service!

Two people in our party are very sensitive Celiacs. The menu isn't accommodating for gluten free options. We requested no bread, potatoes or croutons. You guessed it we got all of them. The server moved them to a small plate at the table. The omelet & salad had cross contamination & we didn't eat them. We paid full price & will never return. PLEASE train your staff about eating gluten free.

This place is amazing! Loved, loved, loved it. Wonderful service that really cares and makes you feel welcomed. The atmosphere is beautiful and lit just right for intimate dining. The food is seriously show stopping and we can't wait to revisit this little gem. Such a great family owned business. Do yourself a favor and go treat yourself to a meal at Fred's Hickory Inn. It really is excellent.

Google
I had the smoked prime rib, and it was like buttah! The potatoes gratin were luscious and creamy. Other entrees ordered in our group were the ribs, cedar wrapped salmon, and fried fish bucket. Everyone commented on how delicious their meals were. Our first time here, and we will definitely be back !!

The saga of Fred’s continues... It’s been nearly four years since this legendary Bentonville supper club was temporarily shuttered by a fire. Upon reopening things just weren’t the same, not by a long shot. The rebuilding of the structure was fine but the food and staff barely resembled the old Fred’s. Finally things have begun to seriously turn around. I would urge anyone that wrote Fred’s off as a lost cause to give them another look. On a recent visit we were greeted warmly and quickly seated. It was immediately obvious that our server was the kind of pro Fred’s used to regularly employ. I usually don’t mention names, even when the service is great, but Casey was quite possibly the best server we’ve had in Northwest Arkansas, and we’ve had some very good service locally. His knowledge of the menu, both food and drink, was impressive. Further he had extensive knowledge of Fred’s history and an obvious passion for his profession. Fred’s is unique in that it’s calling card is smoked meats, especially ribs, combined with a relaxed fine dining atmosphere. In recent times this was one of the areas where Fred’s struggled; not anymore. The house-made sausage, pork and beef made for a terrific appetizer, The Fred’s Sampler. The Steak Salad was elevated to outstanding by the perfectly seasoned and grilled steak and wonderful house-made dressings. The Smoked Chicken with an accompanying Rib were off the charts, like I’d been transported to Fred’s circa 1971. The Cheesecake was a fitting end to an exceptional dining experience that I hope to soon repeat. One word of advice; unless you are already a fan skip the spaghetti, this just isn’t an Italian restaurant.

We came for my friends 70 th birthday. Food was marginal. Our waiter was rude. No worries we will never visit this place again

Google
It's been three years and it is still amazing. Great food, excellent wait staff, and fine dining as expected. The cheesecake was homemade, and they had blueberry topping!

Yelp
Good food. A little pricey. Friendly staff and wonderful environment. The staff is great. The team has been very welcoming

Yelp
Was sat quickly, the waitstaff was kind and responsive and I had the best burger of my entire life at lunch - the LA burger

Yelp
Table at Hickory Inn UPDATE: Alex, the General Manager, was very apologetic and seemed to be genuinely sorry about our experience. She fully refunded our dinner and even personally delivered lunch to my mother, which I felt was going above and beyond. ------- We called ahead to confirm the closing time of 8 pm and to put our name in for priority seating, to ensure we would have at least a full hour and not be rushed (or inconvenience the staff with a last-minute walk in). We weren't a large party, just four generations out to enjoy a pleasant birthday dinner for our 86-year-old Mom/Grandma/GG. The first issue, that we should've addressed, was that they sat us at a table that was on quite a slant and was wobbly. Keep in mind we had a three year-old and an 86-year-old with a walker. And there were several empty tables nearby on flat ground. Not an ideal set up. We were seated right away (around 6:50), and quickly ordered an appetizer and kids meal for our little guy. On three different occasions we mentioned that we would like to see a drink menu; we never did. The kids meal arrived about 5 minutes later, then our appetizer. Water hadn't been poured nor our dinner order taken. We knew what we wanted and ordered; the rest of the food came in about 10 minutes, and the server wanted to remove our appetizer that we were only halfway through. (There were several times throughout the meal that staff attempted to take plates away while we were still eating off of them.) As soon as the food arrived, flies began to swarm (nobody to blame there, we chose to sit outdoors). We were constantly swatting them away and had brought our own small fans that we were trying to use to battle them. I finally asked for extra napkins to lay on top of the food that was sitting and not being eaten at the time, and the server brought us a fan designed to keep flying insects away, but again, not until we had been very frustrated with the flies and trying to take care of them on our own with no attentiveness from staff regarding that issue. Overall the food was just average. The chicken strips and fries in the kids meal were good. The barbecue was pretty good. The slaw was bland. The three adults ordered salads, two of them with Ranch and Parmesan dressing. The salads were brought back with vinaigrette; we were told that they were out of the other dressings and the server took the liberty of choosing our dressing for us without any thought of potential dietary restrictions or even just preferences. Even if the food had been outstanding, it would've been impossible to actually enjoy it, with the lack of care from staff and feeling rushed and uncomfortable. We had to ask repeatedly for water refills, the glasses were very small. Eventually the server brought a pitcher and left it at the table without taking the time to refill our empty glasses. That seemed a bit subpar for a full service (and not the most affordable) restaurant. With staff hovering, it became clear that we had worn out our welcome (around 7:45), so we asked the server to take a photo to commemorate our celebration. Even then we felt rushed. She started taking pictures before we had a chance to get in position, which takes a couple of minutes with a three year-old and an elderly person in a walker. We didn't realize we were finished with dinner until we returned to our table and our dishes were in the process of being cleared. We shoved a couple of bites in our mouths before the plates were taken and hurriedly packaged what was left of our food to take with us. We would have liked to have five minutes or so at the end of the meal to decide on our own that we were finished and ready to leave, rather than feeling like we were being ushered out to the car, well before 8:00. We were pulling away at 7:57, after stopping on the way to the parking lot to take a selfie or two. We have been to this restaurant several times through the years (even when it was "Fred's"), but after this experience, we have no plans to return. Our family eats out rather frequently, and we all agree this was the worst experience we've had at a restaurant from the standpoint of service. If you decide to eat here, you may want to plan for at least two hours prior to closing time to have a relaxing dinner and not feel rushed.

Yelp
Food is always very good. Service was great at the bar! Bartender Tyler and Daniel are so kind, easy to get along with, and provided great service. I love the ambience in the bar area. It's great to watch a football game and drink a beer.

Yelp
This place is soooo cozy and we will for sure be back. The staff were all great and super welcoming as well. We are especially looking forward to visiting over the summer when we can enjoy eating outside. Now for the food... I'll say it was good, really good and I was hoping for great. I don't want to take anything away from it so let me explain just a little... It was our first time there so I asked what they were known for and I ordered based on that. I ordered the Charleston Filet and a French onion soup to start. My wife ordered a chicken dish. The French onion soup came and was absolutely great. It was very cheesy and full of flavor. The chicken dish my wife ordered was great according to her. My filet on the other hand was... decent. Not bad but definitely not great. We did order dessert and OMG the bread pudding and cheesecake was unreal! So this all comes back to the steak... I was just expecting more as it was recommended. We will be back very soon and I'll try something else and hopefully I can give a 5 next trip!

Yelp
Upscale dinner spot after hot humid day of golf & pickleball at nearby Bella Vista. Excellent service & great flavors w steaks just perfectly prepared. We will return. If you are in town don't forget the crystal bridges museum. It's no charge & iconic architecture.

Yelp
We had an absolutely great lunch this week. I see other opinions but food, quantity, service, atmosphere and price were stellar. If you are fortunate enough to have Rachel handle your table you will be happy. She was the perfect blend of friendly, professional, knowledgeable, helpful and quick witted. The lunch started with a salad bar and a pasta bar cooked to your desire--- that would be enough but it also included a choice of about 8-10 entrees. Not reduced but full size. Don't stop yet because you get a choice of 3. Full portion desserts. All for $18. It was too much food ( but we ate it all). Everything was well prepared and tasted great. My buddy got salmon which is not always a great choice but it was very good. The atmosphere is calm, relaxed and something I will definitely experince again

Yelp
Atmosphere, Quality, Satisfaction, Appealing, Friendly, Helpful. Is there anything else to say? Yes, just go without considering. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Yelp
Went for my twins 18th bday dinner. Atmosphere was open and serene, we sat inside. Ethan was our server, he was knowledgeable about the menu, had a great attitude and was very attentive. The food was absolutely phenomenal and the service was even better!! We were gifted a non alcoholic champagne for the 18th bday as well as a free dessert for the bday boy. What an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Yelp
Took my family here for Thanksgiving dinner......I was thankful when our meal was concluded. The only bright spot of our meal was our server Caedra, who was bright, cheerful, and attentive. It goes downhill from here...... Last year, the dinner for Thanksgiving was served buffet style, which was nice.....I was able to pick and choose the food I wanted. I am assuming that the owners of this place wanted to increase the seating and did away with this to make more money, and did away with the buffet in favor of a "family style" meal. I am normally not opposed to a family style meal, assuming that there is actually room on the table for all the dishes. However, this was not the case.......dishes were packed on the table to the point my father-in-law kept bumping his elbow on the rolls. Oh, and then there was the noise of the restaurant.....I have been to NHRA drag races that were quieter than the inside of this place. You literally could not hear the person across the table from you...... Food-wise, each family style dish was served with barely enough to feed a single person. Granted, you could get more any time you wanted, but still this could have been avoided had more been in each dish to start with (i.e. turkey comes to mind, as it was a Thanksgiving meal). The prime rib was definitely past it's prime and dry as cardboard, the turkey had a weird orange flavor on it, and the ham was also overdone. Pumpkin pie was a joke.....instead of a slice of pie, it was basically filling in a jar with whipped topping. Final insult after a $39.99 per person meal? $7 for coffee.......Starbucks is way overpriced, but this place now has taken the lead in the ridiculous price for coffee. My overall conclusion is that my money would have been better spent at Denny's.

Yelp
This restaurant is overpriced and uneventful. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment on many levels.

Yelp
Surprisingly, the butter chicken was delicious. Overall, the restaurant had a nice ambience to it.

Yelp
Great food with a lovely romantic atmosphere and service was impeccable. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
I have no words for how AMAZING the food is - we had leftovers and it was still tasty the next day! The staff was so friendly and the owner walked around to say hi to everyone (also shout out to our server Eve who was a complete angel)! We will definitely be back, we did have to wait a bit to be seated but I feel like your patience yields reward. Also the vibe and artwork was very cool!

Yelp
We gave the Hickory Inn Sunday brunch a try today and I was disappointed after reading reviews and finding out the group also owns Mirabella's table. The service was slow and our food was dry and overcooked. The French Toast was the driest I've ever had and the eggs Benedict was overcooked. The plates were definitely under a heat lamp for awhile and not being served on time. Our waiter was fine and friendly. But the team would constantly forget items we ordered and we would have to bring it up to remind them. The restaurant wasn't that busy for slow service and badly prepared dishes. When I compare it to Mirabella's service and quality, it's night and day. The freshness and service at Mirabella's is always superb. I'll continue to go to Tavola and Mirabella's, but I won't be returning to Hickory Inn.

Mallory S.

Yelp
Loved the food here! Came for breakfast and found out they have a gourmet buffet breakfast! It was delicious and now we come here as often as we can! We ate grilled grapefruit, mac and cheese, salmon, fried chicken, cheesecake, bacon, pancakes, and lots more. Definitely come hungry. We have been here once for dinner and it was also amazing but breakfast is our favorite.

Yelp
Charming decor and solid food. Friendly staff. While it wouldn't be a "life changing culinary" experience, it's going to make you happy every time you go. It's a restaurant that easily fits into your weekend rotation.
google avatar

Robin M.

Yelp
The food, service, and the atmosphere was amazing. I would highly suggest the French onion soup, Turkey pot pie and the chicken nachos. And don't forget the bread pudding!! It was on point and very delicious!
google avatar

Lee T.

Yelp
We had a lovely meal. The ribeye was to perfection. I had the salmon...delicious. Everything was very good. Only thing I had issue with was the seating. We made reservation for 6. They crammed us into a booth.. 6 adults in a booth.. not okay. Other than that, a great experience
google avatar

Gary D.

Yelp
Went to the Hickory Inn again for lunch business meeting. Lunch was the "tapas" menu. I had slider and the club wedge sandwich. Really tasty.
google avatar

Shelby G.

Yelp
Brunch of champions. You'll be seated at a table in a beautiful dining room where you'll see a small menu of order as many as you want brunch items, including prime rib sandwiches, which are delightful. They have just changed their brunch concept from buffet style to family style. Try a small portion of everything on their menu and don't skip the French press coffee.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
Steak was awesome and service was amazing. Great atmosphere! Will be back soon with family and friends.

Scott S.

Yelp
A nice restaurant with a cool rustic atmosphere. They have excellent service as we had a nice Thanksgiving meal here last year (B)
google avatar

Alicia K.

Yelp
Food was just okay, nothing to write home about. Staff appeared new and not well versed in the restaurant industry. Expensive date night for subpar food and service. The restaurant was cute inside, however the outdoor landscape needs some love and attention.

Yelp
Had a lovely dinner out for a friend's birthday tonight! It wasn't too loud so we could easily talk. All five of us were happy with our meals. I had the four cheese ravioli and it was delicious! I love how it was MORE than just cheese ravioli. The sun dried tomatoes, peas, and small diced asparagus really elevated the dish. They offered a complimentary dessert choice for the birthday girl. She selected the key lime pie and it was out of this world! Very creamy texture. I love-LOVE key lime pie, and I can say it was one of the best. They brought in new beautiful tables and chairs but kept the red booths. It may seem odd to mention the chairs but they are VERY nice. Sturdy, padded, beautifully crafted. They have done a nice job keeping the old Arkansas charm but with modern touches. We can't wait to go back when it gets a little warmer to enjoy the string lights stone patio!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
It took a bit of time to get seated on a Sunday but everyone was pleasant and the food was good.
google avatar

Charly E.

Yelp
We ordered the prime rib sandwich and fries for lunch, which was an excellent choice! Great portion sizes! We really enjoyed sitting in their patio. Such a cozy place and the staff was all kind and quick to take and deliver our order! We look forward to coming back and having dinner here.
google avatar

Yelp
As Addison stated in her review, things were a little dicey for a while here. Our niece and her fiancé reserved the big room for their wedding rehearsal dinner. The new owners tried to pull a bait and switch on them too. They got through it and came to a somewhat satisfying resolution. The night of the event, the wait and bar staff was magnificent! The smoked prime rib was delicious, albeit at room temperature. The chicken was also not very warm. The potatoes and pasta dishes were hot and enjoyable. 50/50 on the food. 100% on the service and 25% on the new owners.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Service was friendly and helpful. Lovely ambiance, albeit soooo cold. Not cheap, but did not feel gouged. And they don't charge a credit card fee. Will definitely go back

Regan L.

Yelp
Poor service and attitude from the hostess. Ignored a request, and was unresponsive as to why.

Whitney P.

Yelp
I was really hoping for a nice upscale dinner date, and the potential was there, but the service really fell flat. I ordered prime rib, medium rare, and what came out was pretty solidly medium. The waiter didn't check on us for quite awhile after the food came. I mentioned it to him and he basically shrugged. He was equally attentive the ONE other time he visited our table before bringing the check. I heard him tell another couple who asked for coffee creamer "yeah sure" in a teenager type tone, was walking away and not even looking at them. This guy was like 40. Where did they find him?! The food was okay- but not $100 meal good. The restaurant itself was nice, and we loved the bar area. In the end, the experience wasn't worth entertaining a second visit.

Airen W.

Yelp
Lunch was a new buffet salad style plus you pick 1 out of their featured entrées and 1 dessert. The food was delicious and serving sizes were dinner sized for lunch prices. $18 per person! I had the salmon and my son had Parmesan chicken. Both were delicious! My son had the coconut cream pie and I had a chocolate. I didn't take any pictures I'm sorry, but the service was excellent and the food was equally excellent we will be going back there definitely.

Esme V.

Yelp
Fabulous location! So secluded but still in town. My first trip since they changed name and ownership. Doesn't seem like much has changed. But what has changed seems to be improvements. Tried the smoke prime rib. Quite tasty! A little on the tough side but perfectly done medium rare! And amazing flavor! Plenty of smoke! Best baked potatoes ever!! Don't know what they do to them but very, very yummy!! Salad was good but the croutons were too big and weren't crisp at all... perhaps even leaning toward the stale side. All the dressings are made in house! The vinaigrette was good. But not fabulous. The fresh hot bread with cinnamon butter was quite tasty and they brought out plenty!! Tyler, our waiter, was very attentive and keep our glasses full and was very helpful as some our party is vegetarian and most of the menu items were not vegetarian friendly. They were very good at finding alternatives and making suggestions for substitutions. The only negative was the NOISE level! Oh my - could hardly hear myself think and seriously bad for hearing impaired!! A fairly large party in the hall and the sounds echoed badly! The pricing was a little high... but not too bad for such a nice venue and quality food! I look forward to coming again!

Theresa Z.

Yelp
Found this place tonight. The menu is a little old school but in all the best ways! Prime rib, creamy potatoes, and mushrooms? Yes please. Service was also very attentive. The noise level is a little loud but everything else was wonderful. Would go back again.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, my wife and I love all their other restaurants. But it was not good, the product was not good compared to what they deliver at all the other Table concepts. I had the Caccio E Peppe it was so bad I'd be embarrassed. Alfredo sauce style instead of actual serving a caccio. The filet was sweet tasting completely wrong on all levels you never mix savory and sweet in the same main dish. The noodles should never be flat in this dish, the name even tells you what should be In it. Take it off the menu until you get it right. Service was great, the price point and ambiance or great but we were both very dissatisfied with the food. I don't ever want to write negative reviews, but I want this place to thrive, but you can't serve that and be successful.

Roy W.

Yelp
Food was great! I had the Smoked Prime Rib and it was really good. My only issue was the service. We had reservations for 6 and was seated by the front door. I knew this was an issue and should have said something before I sit down. Every car they went thru the parking lot shined its lights in my eyes. Next was our poor inexperienced waitress. I am not exaggerating she looked 16-17 years old and very soft spoken. She tried but had very little training. I felt sorry for her and give her a decent tip. It was a Christmas get together and maybe I was expecting a perfect night and it was not. Menus and pricing is great and I will go back but I will tolerate the service without talking to the manager.

Priya M.

Yelp
Best food I have ever eaten literally everything tasted good had the bbq plate and prime rib sandwich both near 10s tasted the chicken and waffles also a 10 defintely one of the best in the south

James C.

Yelp
New lunch "Tapas" menu was a huge change if you are looking for the traditional fare here. I was disappointed in the selection and flavor.

Kim N.

Yelp
Food was great Drinks were sugared up and watered down Server was not knowledgeable about the menu Was charged more for prime rib than what was posted on menu
google avatar

Joann N.

Yelp
First time here - loved it ! Food was amazing and the service was wonderful Goat cheese fondu was the bomb!

Kathy E.

Yelp
I went there for lunch with a group of ladies. The server was slow taking our orders. The Carnitas sandwich was okay at best, but the fries were very good. Server asked us what dressing we wanted on our salads without mentioning that salads are an extra charge, but acted like it was included with the meal. When we all went to pay for our lunches, we found out that the server had deleted all of the orders so each of us had to go to the register and remind her what we had ordered. When I looked at my receipt I saw that I was hit with a charge for "Open foods". No idea what that was for and since I had already paid it was too late to ask why. I have been to other "Table" restaurants and have always had good food and great service. I won't go back to the Table at The HIckory Inn.

Candy D.

Yelp
First time. Lunch was okay. The service was adequate. Probably not our favorite place to return to.
google avatar

Kathleen D.

Yelp
Food and service was great. I wished we hadn't been placed by the kitchen as we could not communicate with each other.
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch before the Razorback game on Saturday. We enjoyed the Mediterranean salad with seared tuna and a cheese burger platter. Perfect weather, so we sat outside on the patio. Great service, quick to refill the iced tea
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
What a pretty experience! We did not have reservation and walked in for dinner on. Saturday evening. Seated quickly. I had a limeade which was DELICIOUS and ordered the crab cakes and the hubby ordered the prime rib. Both were very tasty! The prime rib was cooked perfectly.

Yelp
With Table Mesa's reputation as a plus we looked forward to eating at this restaurant- particularly as I was never overly fond of Fred's although I could see the attraction- the smoked meats were pretty good. How wrong were we. Logic would seem to indicate that the deviled eggs appetizer would be four pieces - the eggs were half pieces - we had three pieces to serve four people at the table. Taste - meh, average. The Hawaiian steak tasted like it had 1/2 bottle of seasoning on it - no subtlety at all. The prime rib was dry, gristly- 4-5 ounces of my 12 ounces was inedible. Same story on other plates. To cut a long story short, we were a group of four, only two glasses of wine and a Diet Coke between us and our bill including tip was $230. The food was way short of Longhorns or Outback and probably 50% more expensive. We won't be back and in my estimation a lot of people will try this place once and not come back either. Sorry to sound so negative
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
First time there since it became Table at the Hickory Inn. The food was very good I had the Atchafalaya Pasta and it was very good. Everyone at the table said their food was very good as well. Our server was Zachary and he was a very good server. Would recommend.

Yelp
The bartender named Emily was an absolute piece of work. She is not an asset to this restaurant - in fact, she is costing them. Extremely rude person, very hostile. I came in with my family (my grandpa had just passed away a week ago so we've been in town taking care of our grandma) and a nice lady from the church took us here. I knew she was paying for the bill so I went inside and tried to order a bottle of wine for the few of us who drink and Emily did not want to serve me. She inspected at my ID front to back for several minutes and said "I've just never seen an ID like this" ... ok. Mind you, I was with my grandma... Then she kept asking me a series of questions as if I had some sort of bad intentions. It was so uncomfortable. It was clear that she just didn't want to serve me and that's the first time I've ever experienced that. :)

Christy L.

Yelp
The new brunch menu is awful. The soggy toast, overcooked eggs Benedict was literally in edible. Brisket that was recommended on this Benedict was absolutely disgusting. No seasoning and horrible flavor profiles.
