"Danielle Alvarez from Fred’s appreciates anchovies from Spain for their ability to enhance a variety of dishes with their salty, umami-rich flavor."

"Stellar reviews mean international visitors are making a beeline for Fred’s, but it’s a firm favorite with local foodies too. The price tag is on the high side, but respected chef Danielle Alvarez’s tasty food is worth it. Combining tradition with new techniques, the team draws on freestanding Tuscan grills and a custom-made hearth to create dishes like fire-roasted lamb leg with turnips and lemon salsa verde. There’s a menu of the day with optional drink pairings and two multi-course Saturday menus." - Sophie Davies

This is my new favorite restaurant in Sydney. The farm to table vibe is just so cozy and homey but done in such a classy way. We had the most spectacular king prawns ever!!!! Those king prawns and the fresh hot bread to soak up all those sweet savory juices from the prawns is all it took to give this place my current #1 dish in Sydney. We went for my birthday and loved the sweet hand written birthday note. Also, the bread pudding with prunes!!! Who knew that would be such an amazing combination! We are definitely coming back and bringing friends and family back!

Gorgeous venue and ambience, but unfortunately the food didn’t live up to expectations. The lamb was extremely chewy and practically inedible, which was disappointing for a dish at that price point. The bread was delicious but everything else was fairly average. I don’t know if we just ordered the wrong things, but overall the experience left my date and I underwhelmed.

I came here to celebrate my birthday, thinking it would be a special night — and at first, it was. We were seated at the chef’s table, the food was beautiful, the atmosphere felt perfect. But right after we finished our mains, I asked a server if they could bring out the cake we’d left in the kitchen. To my surprise, I was told we only had 20 minutes of dining time left. This was the very first time anyone mentioned there was a time limit — no one told us when we booked, and no one mentioned it when we arrived. We quickly lit the candles, sang happy birthday, and I thought I could at least have a few bites of cake before leaving. I was about to ask for some plates, but before I could even say anything, the server had already assumed we were packing it up to go. The whole meal felt rushed from that moment on — in the end, we’d only been there about an hour and a half. I’ve never had such a hurried “celebration” before, and I’ve never heard of this restaurant having such a strict time limit. It left me wondering — were we treated differently? Was it because we are not local? I truly hope not, but that’s how it felt.

Celebrated my birthday at Fred’s and it was divine! The ambience in this restaurant is top tier - so homely and cozy. Each dish was made with lots of love and the flavours were paired together very thoughtfully. Holly served us and she made my birthday very special - thank you Holly & the Fred’s team!

Freds is absolutely fantastic! Sunday lunch, was busy but they did not miss a beat. Service on point, not too casual nor formal but bang on! Beautiful dining room and bar, service was great Omg the desert Queen makes everything fresh on order. Wow. It was epic, Charlotte? She was fabulous her deserts amazing. The food here is tasty, fresh and superb. Entrees tried, duck egg and mud crab absolutely delicious. Main dish shared coral trout which was phenomenal gorgeous fresh salad, gorgeous fresh herbs throughout the salad dressed perfectly. Wine list is long and lots of options, we enjoyed a lovely dry French Rose from Provence. It's expensive but so worth it Dress up and enjoy

Fred’s had a very nice atmosphere and vibes, we were seated on the chefs table so we had a really nice view into the open kitchen! 🥨 The fougasse was very nice and hot! The bread was crunchy on the outside without being tough and the butter was went well! I preferred the butter over the olive oil. 🦪oysters were nice and fresh, we saw them being shucked in the kitchen was was nice! 🐟 the tuna crudo pieces were generous slices and the oil and fresh olives were great additions that didn’t overpower the tuna too much. 🥧Canneloni dish was nice and creamy without feeling too heavy which was nice. 🥩 Rib eye was nice and salted. It had a lot of fat pieces. However felt it was a lot to share between two, maybe for a larger group. 🍎we got the Paul’s garden apple and it was like an elevated apple pie, not too sweet. Overall nice service with a nice atmosphere. Open kitchen is a nice vibe as well.

Google
Made reservations for a Saturday lunch at Fred’s. The service and food were excellent. The exposed kitchen provided a very interesting atmosphere - the calm professionalism of all the chefs cooking was impressive. Definitely a more indulgent experience to treat yourself to for a special occasion.

Google
A great experience! The restaurant itself has a very unique and warm atmosphere with the open kitchen + it’s very entertaining. The food was delicious, we got a variety of entries and mains and were really satisfied (portions were decent as well which is good for the price). The service was great - just the perfect amount of attention. Obviously this is on the fancy side so not your usual eat out experience and pricy but would definitely recommend as a gift or as a once in a while experience!

Yelp
The moment you walk in to this charming spot, there is something about Fred that you immediately like. Maybe it is the rustic wooden counters separate the open kitchen with the pizza and wood burning open fire cooking. We were told that the half chicken is a signature dish and yes, it is moist and cooked perfectly. The spanner crab omelette with lobster bisque on top is rich and decadent. There are many wine by the glass options, which we gladly took advantage of to try different glass side by side. The service is impeccable: friendly, knowledgeable and attentive- that id why this restaurant gets booked out weeks in advance!

Yelp
Found Fred's through my research for food places and was recommended also by my contact from Acme. Made reservations for 8 PM on a Wednesday night for our last meal in Sydney via their online booking site. Heads up though for people from out of country, when I got back to the states, I realized they had called me that day of to confirm my reservation and if I didnt call back, they were going to cancel it. I'm not aware of many restaurants that will cancel the reservation if you dont get back to them or if they did or not, but it might explain some of the events that happened after. So make sure you have phone service on that day I guess. (I did not.) Fred's is easy to miss if you pass by it, but that just adds to the charm of how nice it is inside. We checked in (they didnt let on if they had canceled it) and led us into the dining room/kitchen. There were tables that surrounded this beautiful homey kitchen and even two seats at the counter so you could even dine and watch. We were seated along the wall and had water filled and some amuse bouche brought to us, which was delicious. Then the host or waiter came to our table and asked if they could move us to another table so they could seat a larger party. We obliged, but noticed that they seated two women at our previous table and not a bigger party. So not sure what happened there. We looked at the menu and asked the waiter for his recommendations. It was his first night there and he had tried very little on the menu so he couldnt recommend much. I think it's important for waiters to taste the menu or at least know about the menu so hopefully since then he's done that. First day on the job, I get it. My boyfriend ordered the lamb and I got the ravioli, listed under entree. Our waiter was a bit convinced although it was under entree, it would not be enough and recommended I order a main dish. I wasnt super hungry so I just told him to go with the entree version. Havent seen many restaurants have a separate entree and main dish category either. We also ordered the bread, which sounded good, and came recommended to us by the waiter. I remember it being good and hot since it was right out of the oven. The butter and olive oil that came with it went nicely. We also got a side of the potatoes and my boyfriend loved them because he enjoys roasted potatoes. It also went well with his lamb. My ravioli was good too and enough for me as well. I think there were about 4 pieces, but they were big. Nothing stood out to us on the dessert menu, so we skipped and just went home after. While it wasnt the best meal I had on the trip, the food, while a little pricey, was definitely was solid and the kitchen had a nice warm feeling and was fun to watch. It's a great place for date night or if you want to impress your future in laws.

Yelp
Fred's was recommended by a friend and oh my gosh... I can't tell you enough how darling this place is. The kitchen is open so you can see the chefs cooking, you can literally see what's going in the clay oven, and it was just such a lovely experience. The food was so delicious... everything we had was amazing from the bread to the dumplings to the veal... so worth it. The trout tartare is must. *Drools* Definitely recommend going! Make reservations ahead of time.

Yelp
We truly enjoyed dinner here. The service was superb and it was fantastic to be able to watch the chefs prepare our food. We started with the za'taar bread and it was a very interesting and yummy combination. We then split the albacore tartare and corn pancake. The corn pancake was one of the most fabulous culinary combinations I have ever had. We then had the chicken entree and it was savory and delicious. So tender. The dessert and dessert wine was a fab conclusion. We would come back in a heartbeat next time we are in Sydney.

Yelp
Excellent wine bar, wholesome food made from excellent produce. The service was excellent, genuine and something you would go back for. Paddington has done well to secure this place. Also, don't be afraid to pop in for a drink at the wine bar, they have an extensive list of excellent wine. French inspired of course but unpretentious and accessible.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great ambience and great cocktails. Had the Lemon Gobbler and Aperol Spritz. Will definitely come again for food and more drinks.

Yelp
Summer evening in Sydney. Did some homework looking for special dinner for last night in town. 5:30 cocktail. A Black currant sour by Gerald at the bar was a timely tribute to local farmers post fires, was creative, tasty and deserving of a timeless cocktail. I'm a whisky and Pisco sour lover so this did not disappoint. A fortunate seat at the chef's table was available for a solo guest. Mara from Italia, Tam from Germany, and other international staff were natural, really warm and expert. The menu was brilliant (...well written up headChef Danielle Alvarez) diverse and a flavorful blend of comfort, class, freshness and surprise. Have dessert too. Fred's was Goldilocks dining before heading back to SoCal.

Yelp
I almost don't want to rate this place because then more people will go there and then it'll turn less cool. But: talk about swank!!! Omg I never wanted to leave. Delicious cocktails (try their version of the old fashioned, and the negroni was a close second). Would be amazing for dates. Try to sit downstairs! This place has got moxie. Something very special about it!

Yelp
Just like all Merrivale properties they spared no expense on design and fit out. The place looks great as does the bar downstairs. The open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant is great eye candy and the open fire cooking smell just great. Now the food, although the menu is interesting some of the meals just didn't deliver. The cod was overly fishy in the seaweed butter and like my lamb dish was either over rested or cooked to early as both were just warm on just warm plates. The dessert of caramel covered ice cream was just that and at the price I would have been better off with a magnum from the 7/11. Friendly and attentive staff and a good if a little pricey wine list topped off an enjoyable night. I'll definitely go again to try another seasons menu and hopefully the kitchen will match the fit out.

Yelp
Restaurant Concept is great atmosphere is good. Staff are well presented and attentive. The menu a little too brief a choice of 4 main courses. The wine menu at least 400 wines! too extensive. We actually went for the advertised ethical farmed food. Probably try it you won't be disappointed. Would we go again probably not.

Yelp
Superb service. Amazing ambiance. Incredible food. It's crazy thinking this is a converted shop on Oxford Street. I seriously want to live here, or at least eat there as often as I can afford. Best restaurant/bar in Sydney. Yes it's expensive, but is worth it.

Yelp
After we encountered a closed Paddington Market, we ventured across the street to enjoy lunch at Fred's. Wow! Everything, yes, everything was fantastic. Service, food, wine, staff all were unbelievable. Even the chef came out and made some recommendations for what to order for lunch. If you are ever in the vicinity of the Market, make time to cross the street and enjoy a fabulous meal at Fred's.

Yelp
Great place in Sidney! Pricey but worth it. Ambience, service and quality all are top notch. Highly recommend for a special occasion dinner or just a casual lunch.

Yelp
Best.Sydney.Restaurant. That's it in a nutshell! We've been to Sydney lots of times and dined in the best restaurants, but Fred's is something else. I've never experienced a restaurant like this. Not only is the food delicious, the staff friendly and attentive, the wine very tasty (if a little expensive), but most of all the open kitchen makes for an incredible piece of theatre. Highly recommended.
