***IF YOU CARE ABOUT PEOPLE LIVING WITH A DISABILITY DO NOT GO HERE***
This is a horrible establishment. I had my service dog who is a registered service animal. At the door they told us we had to sit outside, even though it was 8:20am so only 48 degrees outside. When I tried to tell them that she is a registered service animal and I can show them her ID (which is already extending myself because legally I do not even have to do that) they did not care. The man cut me off and said “no only outside.”
To have my disability completely dismissed felt horrible and was embarrassing. I did not want to cause a scene at the door so I left and called asking to speak to a manager. I thought that I could nicely clear this up with someone, but the same guy answered the phone and said “no manager here” in the same rude and dismissive tone. When I tried to go to their website to see if I could email somebody, it redirected me to a sketchy online casino website. You cannot make this kind of thing up!
Since moving to SF I have not had any issues like this. I have been to fancy Italian restaurants, expensive sushi restaurants…that have all been more tha accommodating. So to be told I could not sit inside A DINER with my service animal was shocking.
**** IT IS ALSO ILLEGAL! ******
Restaurants in California are considered “public accommodations” under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and state law, which means they must allow people with service animals into all areas where customers are normally allowed. They cannot be excluded simply because of the service animal.
It’s one thing for an employee to be ignorant of the law. That happens. What’s unacceptable is pairing that ignorance with arrogance and outright rudeness when I attempted to explain the actual legal requirements.
There was no manager on site. No website. No visible way to hold anyone accountable. The entire interaction reeked of a sketchy, poorly run operation that thrives on dismissiveness rather than responsibility.
This place should be ashamed of itself.
