My first thought when I saw the article in the East Bay Express was "wow, I've never heard of such a thing," and I'm so very glad that I made the trek to the tasting and launch of their Lavender wine last Friday.
What is Lavender wine you ask? I couldn't believe it either, but it's actually wine created by fermenting LAVENDER... Whaaaaaaa?!
For those in the know (and now I can count myself among them), this apparently has been going on for thousands of years, and yet a search for more information on "flower wines", leads me right back to Free Range Flower Winery (LOL, figures :-).
I'm a simple wine aficionado; if it tastes good, it tastes good... and the freshman offering from Free Range Flower TASTES GOOD. It's hard to explain, but it's not some radical, off the deep end, bleeding edge product (and that's a good thing). I will leave the nuanced descriptions to a future reviewer, but it's is definitely something to experience.
I am really looking forward to their next rumored production (Rose Hibiscus) after of course a repeat performance for the Lavender Wine.
These days, with the speed of progress and innovation, it's quite rare to find and experience something "new" (even if it's really old); if you get the chance, count yourself lucky to partake in the lost art of Free Range Flower Winery.
