Stopped by late night after a concert and sat at the bar. My old fashioned was nicely balanced without being overly sweet and my wife enjoyed the spiked hot chocolate. Nice selection of beers on tap too. Friendly service, great drinks, super cool vibe. Definite recommend.

It's really hard to find a bar that is good for just sitting and having a convo. Free State has a nice pub atmosphere. They dont really play music too loud so it's a good place to sit and chat. The drinks here are good but VERY strong.

I'm utterly impressed by this place! From the moment I spotted the staircase leading down to the basement, I had a feeling it would be fantastic, and boy, was I right! With a selection of 14 taps featuring local beer, it's a beer lover's paradise! Felix, our bartender, was not only incredibly friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable about the brews. Even the security staff were top-notch. The overall friendliness of the staff has ensured that I'll be returning! Highly recommended!

Free State is a cocktail bar in the basement of a Chinatown building right behind the Capital One Arena. You walk down steep stairs, show the bouncer your I.D., and you're in. The space itself is pretty big for a city like Washington, D.C. There are tables and plenty of bar seating. The menu is large with wine, beer, and unique cocktails. I also appreciated they have a sour ale on tap!

We frequent Free State at least once a week since we live nearby. It’s got a solid happy hour, chill and friendly staff, and the vibes are always great. Trivia on Sundays is a fun bonus, and overall, it’s just a reliable to grab a drink and become a regular.

Chill underground bar. We went on a Monday so it was pretty dead but we had a group of us and there were deals on the drinks, plus they were playing pretty good music so all-in-all, it was a cool place. I'd definitely go back again

Cozy basement bar, all local drafts and spirits made on the east coast from North Carolina and up. No name brand drinks for the most part besides a few limited staples like patron, black label, jack Daniels, etc. Friendly regulars, small but great staff, good place for happy groups. Beer list constantly changes because they try to rotate a lot of local drafts. Stop in for sure if in DC

Chill place for drinks, cool interior but the orange crushes were highly disappointing- they were watery, weak and not served with a fresh pressed orange, instead a pre-mix was used. For $10, we expected a more high quality drink.
