Austin Vegan Barbecue Truck BBQ Revolution Moves to Los Angeles for Winter | Eater Austin

"A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for the family of Freebirds World Burrito employee Johnathan Aguilar after he died as a result of a stabbing at the restaurant; reports say the attacker also wounded another employee, later jumped off the roof, and the campaign is seeking $8,000 to be given to Aguilar’s wife and son." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Got burritos for dinner because we wanted to try it as there's not one where we're from. Heard good things about it and how it's better than Chipotle. However, I personally don't get the hype. Maybe I didn't order the right things, but it was all mushy and not that flavorful. Wouldn't get it again if I had the chance. The workers are very nice though. The young lady working was very helpful with answering all our questions.

Google
Tried to go for the first time… app didn’t work and the manager didn’t seem to really care about what I asked about so🤷🏽‍♀️ off to chipotle and moes Update: my bf went to get one so we could give a fair review… just go to chipotle or moes as far as taste goes and he said the service was fast and the workers were attentive to him when he walked in

Google
Very disappointing experience. The food was way overpriced for the portion size. Before ordering, the waitress specifically said the portions were good and even better than Chipotle, which was completely untrue. What I received was a small portion that definitely didn’t justify the price.

Google
Free bird in Austin Texas did not treat me the same as they did in College Station(free birds). It wasn’t welcoming. The amount was different. I ordered the same thing that day when they open up in College Station and it was very good service was really good so it made me wanna come back again so I had to take care of some business in Austin Texas. I looked up free birds and went there, but it wasn’t welcoming for me. They shorted me food for my burritos. This I know because I ordered the same thing what I ordered in College Station (freebirds)the place in Austin was disappointing.(it seems like I would bothering him when I ask them questions about the food.)The food is good it is better than going to fast food the way the prices are starting to be. Hopefully this makes sense.

Google
I love Freebirds and this location has been my go to for years. However, recent experience has been sub par. This is clearly due to staffing issues. The staff there are always friendly and doing their best. Yet even on weekends and most notably when I went to pick up a Father's Day order this year, days which should be expected to yield heavy traffic, there have been only one or two employees having to take care of both in person and online orders. Father's Day they did not even have all the ingredients, so resources were not supplied well either. I hate having to write this review, but there is also no good way to get a hold of upper management. Please support your staff so that they and your customers have a better experience!

Google
Absolutely had the best experience this afternoon. Four gentlemen working behind the line were very kind and were working hard. The cashier offered to help me bring my tray and everything to the table. I’m a disabled older man and it’s so nice to see that service like this still exists. Thank you Freebirds!

Karen Q.

Google
Visited Freebirds to try some of their new menu items from the claims to fame options. Overall, Freebirds seems to have a more spicy profile compared to other fast casual joints offer similar foods. However, I’m pretty disappointed in the flavors, they just don’t stand out within the burrito/bowl. The queso and chips are decent. The guacamole is definitely missing some flavor as well.

Google
The food wasn't the best, the portions were very small, and we paid almost $50 for 2 people! I had a very bad experience with this place!

Yelp
I can never forgive Freebirds for getting rid of their vegan chorizo. It was the most delicious entree and having an actual plant-based meat made it a truly exceptional option in the world of fast food. That said, enough time has passed that I've been able to process this loss and accept it back into sporadic rotation. You still have three types of beans to choose from, and the veggie option comes with guacamole. They also offer cauliflower rice at no additional cost, which is a nice change of pace. This location specifically is top rate. Always quick, fresh, and fairly priced, all told. The workers here are nice and willing to accommodate when possible. Order in person for the best results. I'm still holding out hope that they'll bring back some sort of vegan meat... But it's a solid, reasonably healthy, fairly priced meal as is.

Yelp
I think this is my favorite Freebirds location! Freebirds has burritos, bowls, salads, and nachos that you can load with tons of toppings... it tastes a little lighter than Chipotle but still fresh and has some unique offerings like cauliflower rice. The staff at this location are friendly and do a great job fulfilling your order and the interior is clean and well-maintained. FAST FACTS: * Parking: plenty available in the lot around the building * Online ordering: available on their website or app * Delivery: available on their website * Wifi: create a free account to access * Taco Tuesday deal: $9.99 for two tacos, chips, dip, and a drink (available in restaurant only) * Catering and group ordering options The total was $25.05 after tax ($1.91) but before tip for: - Freebird salad with fajita white chicken: $9.59 - Monster bowl with half ground beef and half chicken: $13.59 - Added potatoes to the monster bowl but didn't get charged extra - Ordered a side of chips but I think they forgot to charge us for them The ingredients are all fresh and you can add as many as you want with the exception of queso, guac, potatoes, extra cheese, or extra protein. There are pre-made menu options (Claims to Fame) but you can also build your own burrito, bowl, salad, or nachos. I LOVE that they offer cauliflower rice (no extra charge), diced jalapeños, tortilla strips, and a ton of sauce options. When I first ordered my salad, they were out of cauliflower rice and put my food in a warming area until it was ready which I really appreciated! There is a nutrition calculator available on their website which is perfect if you track macros, count calories, or are following a specific nutrition plan. You can join their rewards program and receive free chips and dip for signing up. From there, you earn points with your purchases that you can redeem for different points. Overall, I love stopping by Freebirds for a quick lunch or dinner option when I'm craving a burrito bowl and this location met my expectations. I'll be back in the future!

Yelp
This is my first time trying the nachos! I do not like the burritos here, but the nachos suprised me! I got an extra cup on cheese for my nachos. I did the beef and the beef was flavorful, I just wish the chunks were a little bigger. I will definitely go back for the nachos!

Yelp
Food is pretty good & cheap. The app is not good at all!! it loses customers. I try to order online for lunch, and it'll tell me Error. Making me order else where. If you're the owner I suggest you put your money into fixing that app so you don't lose costumers.

Yelp
Read this review as a 2.5 star rating! This freebirds is hit or miss, sometimes their rice and beans are hard and undercooked, sometimes they are perfectly cooked. Sometimes the steak is prepared medium sometimes it's pushing well! Some consistency would work wonders here! Freebirds is superior to Cabo Bobs and Chipotle but this location needs more training!

Yelp
I came here for dinner. The guy who made my burrito was awesome. He was obviously putting a lot of thought into the placement of the ingredients. Making them look really appetizing and well spread out. The restaurant was immaculately clean. The potatoes here are great! ;)

Yelp
Got the chicken burrito it was good the salsa variants was what made the burrito chicken was kinda bland but overall satisfied with my experience filled me up.

Yelp
I stopped by this past Sunday around 5 PM, and they were out of everything except onion and corn. I ordered a Super Monster burrito, and instead of the usual solid, well-wrapped burrito you'd expect from other locations, I got something that looked and felt more like a lumpy Hot Pocket. What really killed it, though, was the attitude. Only one employee seemed to be trying--rushing around, clearly doing their best. The rest? Totally checked out, with that classic "I don't want to be here" not giving a fuvk attitude. Im CONCERNED cuz I just moved to the area and now this is going to be my local Freebirds... FML!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Server was rude and dismissive. What her 4 inch nails. And rude racist aditude. We waited 5 minutes to even get acknowledged. I have never in my life had such a demeaning experience.

Emanuel L.

Yelp
I went in friday ordered a monster burrito and ms lucy scrunched up my burrito gave me a ugly attitude at the end of my service very unprofessional and rude would not recommend this location not tryna get her fired but definitely needa get addressed about her attitude towards customers

Yelp
I ordered a monster bowl with seasoned chicken. I received it via UberEats. The chicken tasted like tofu with absolutely no flavor or hint of a chicken taste. The bowl overall had no flavor. This is the first time in years that I have not enjoyed my food at this location.

Yelp
I just ate a very filling, delicious Freeborn Special Brisket burrito!! Holy moly! Very happy with this selection! Restaurant staff very friendly and informative!! Will be returning again soon!! Chips and queso was very good too

Kent D.

Yelp
Simply cannot place an order from their app or online, and you cannot call on the phone to place an order. The app has always been junk.

Kristi L.

Yelp
I ordered small queso and redeemed my free Regular chip and queso with my reward points. I went inside to pick up my order. I proceeded to the "To Go" order spot and I stood there for a bit and no one said anything as they walked by a few times. I went to the register and let the employe, Sahara know that I was there to pick up my order. She asked what it was, however, she never looked up, not once. She gave me 2 small Queso's. When I told her the order was one small queso and the free regular Chips and Queso, she kept saying that I was wrong, being argumentative. Then she said, I 'll give you the regular queso for free. She still never looked up. She tossed the food over the counter. If for some reason it printed wrong on her end, she should've given me the opportunity to show her the receipt on my app. She made me feel like I was trying to get away with something. Be mindful that the rewards are earned from spending money at Freebirds. I have never had a negative experience at any of the Freebirds until now. She shouldn't be working with the public until she has training. Below is my receipt. 1 x Regular Queso & Chips (1 x $4.29) = $4.29 * 1 x Regular Queso 1 x Side of Queso 2oz (1 x $2.49) = $2.49 SUBTOTAL $6.78 REDEEMED: Regular Chips and Dip ($4.29) TAX $0.21 TOTAL $2.70

Yelp
My first time at Freebirds. The queso was quite good, it was also a little spicy and the chips were amazing. The serving was also generous for my friends to share. There were a lot of variety of toppings, but I found my bowl bland overall.

Cade W.

Yelp
I made an online order at the tech ridge freebirds on 08/8/2024 around 7:30 pm. The total for this burrito was 21 dollars. I ordered my burrito with guacamole and queso, which did not come with either. Which is already a 4 dollar upcharge. Along that that, there was little meat, and I ordered the new promoted "prime rib". This 21 dollar burrito essentially came with rice beans and sad wilty, almost moldy tasting lettuce. No meat, no cheese, no guacamole or peppers. The burrito was also not wrapped and looked more like unwrapping a newly punched fetus. I never write reviews like this but for 21 dollars, this was a sad musty experience.

Will R.

Yelp
this used to be the go to spot way better than chipotle, apparently they changed ownership and went to trash. A super monster is now +7 dollars and only comes with one small scoop of guacamole for an additional two dollars on top of that. Any substitutions are extra, and the portions have decreased. This used to be the best spot for a burrito, it is now just as shitty as chipotle. Additionally, my girlfriend got a quesadilla and a coke, for $13 they didnt even grill the quesadilla. they threw some cheese in a tortilla and folded it with a scoop of chicken, and the coke was flat and flavorless! GARBAGE!
google avatar

Lexy P.

Yelp
The monster cost $16 dollars and it's tiny. It's 13 for a freebird which is toning you blind. It used to cost $8 dollars and the Freebirds was like 6 which was on par with other establishments. They also got rid of the gluten free tortillas for some odd reason. Now people like myself that have celiacs can't eat here. I used to come to Freebirds every week years back and now I will not come here (mainly because I can't eat here any more). If your looking for overpriced burritos then go to Freebirds. This place doesn't feel like the hang out spot it used to be. Make Freebirds better again. iPhone mini to compare the tiny sizes for the amount of money you pay for it.
google avatar

Deborah L.

Yelp
Instagram friends were polled, and Freebirds was the winner. Personally, I like the different tortilla options, more bean options- especially unhealthy refried beans, the Spanish rice in addition to Cilantro lime rice, and the many sauce options. Top your burrito with some fried garlic. The idea is you can get a different burrito every time you come! Feeling not overwhelmingly hungry, but want a bang for your buck? Split a monster with a friend.
google avatar

Briana S.

Yelp
The brownie is not good and they don't really give you enough queso in the burritos but they've got solid options that're very customizable and kind staff that can help you decide.
google avatar

Brenda R.

Yelp
I came here because I was told it was better than Chipotle... I'm not saying it is or it isn't. They have the same concept, but the flavors are different. It definitely had a good taste, but there was something it was missing or maybe it was on my end that I missed adding something. I am going to try it again and play around with their ingredients to see what I can come up with next time. My reason why they get 3 stars. They lacked in the customer service area. I got and saw a grin here and there, but it did not feel welcoming and it almost felt like their employees were exhausted and did not want to be there.
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
I used to love Freebirds and would say they were better than Chipotle. After a few years of not eating here, things have definitely changed. First off, there was a long line of customers and only one employee was putting their food together and ringing them up. There were 4 other employees in the back and a couple of them were sipping on soda and chatting. It didn't make any sense. As for the food, it doesn't taste the same either. It's not bad, but definitely not as flavorful as it used to be. For sure Chipotle is now superior, but hopefully Freebirds turns things around and return to form.

Kevin B.

Yelp
Six of us went to Freebirds yesterday for lunch. We were surprised to find the restaurant almost empty during the peak time for lunch. I ordered a burrito and quickly reasoned why. I was used to buying a Freebirds burrito that was pretty hefty, but I only received a small burrito I could have received from Taco Bell. I have no desire to return until I hear that the burritos are back to their original size. It could just be a lack of training, but the lack of customers tells me that this isn't a one off occurrence.
google avatar

Yelp
Gave in and went back and nothing has changed, somebody def struggles with reading clearly. To management reading is fundamental and all employees should have that basic skill. Today I order nachos with creamy jalapeño on the side but got it on top and my queso on the side instead, there was maybe 10 pieces of chicken total on the bed of rice and beans. I give up! Took my son for lunch and let him place his order in the line and his was made correctly so I guess that's the trick don't order online. They clearly hear much better than they read.

Teresa V.

Yelp
We order from this location often through Uber eats. The last three times, we've noted a significant difference decline in the food that shows up. We are vegetarian and get the typical freebird with guacamole as well as other veggies plus some queso. The past three orders seem to be mostly rice with a scant amount of vegetables plus runny queso. The cost cutting measures of this business are apparent. It's unfortunate. We already spend about $15 per burrito plus whatever fees Uber eats tacks on. We won't be ordering from this place again. We gave them 3 strikes, we're now out. Next time, we'll order from Pita fusion or Chipotle if we need a fix. Super disappointed in the drop in quality given the rise in their prices.

Jewell K.

Yelp
It's sad to have to write this review- I typically going to Freebirds once a month or so and typically have amazing customer service and a delicious meal. This time the employees had an attitude, the food was bland, and the restaurant was ghost town. I understand being busy and being stressed but mid day and slow? I understand wokin
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Something has changed at this Freebirds, and recent visits here have been disappointing. This location specifically seems to be understaffed, and a strange customer service model is now in place. Specifically, only one employee is working the entire front line, from building individual burritos all the way through the checkout process. There are other employees around, but they float around the store taking breaks, eating in the dining room, making an online order, or refilling sauces, etc. It doesn't matter if there are 6 or 10 people in line; only one person will actually be helping them. This means that the normally fast and pleasant experience at Freebirds can become frustratingly long. I still enjoy the food, but standing in unnecessarily-long lines triggers my PTSD from Disneyland 2022. Until the staffing and service model improves, I don't recommend this location.
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
I'm a regular of this location because I have never been let down. Sure, it can get pretty busy during peak lunch hours but that's partly because there are so many office buildings close by... I never stray from my bowl, but I do mix up what goes inside. You can't go wrong with adding a scoop of that Freebirds queso! My husband has gotten their quesadilla and it looked pretty yummy. **They melt the cheese inside the tortilla first THEN load it up.** I was confused when he ordered it for the first time, so I thought I'd share it! The staff is friendly and I've gotten multiple different times. The building always seems clean, and I've seen them pick up after their busy moments. The team here stays on task and their performance speaks volumes. If we are out and about and haven't planned lunch, I usually go here. If you are traveling or live close by, eat here.
google avatar

Lyla A.

Yelp
I love Freebirds! We try to eat there a couple of times a month. The service is always good and the food is consistently fresh and tasty. I think it's an incredible value for fresh, tasty food that you're actually watching them prepare fresh in small batches. They blow others (Chipotle) out is the water with their choices and flavor profiles. Fresh lime juice and crispy roasted garlic? Yes please! 15 different sauce options - sign me up! If you're a fan of the other guys and haven't tried Freebirds, you're truly missing out.
google avatar

Yelp
For a tasty and quick lunch it's hard to beat the Bird.. Very Austin the flavor is intense and made to order. Cayenne tortilla Monster with double steak is my go to for a high protein flavorful lunch. The original hot sauce is hot and a perfect match for a savory meal. Yes it's just a burrIto my California friends .. but way Austin so hold the tofu.. :-) Tip - the line can look intimidating but moves along at a good pace - give it a chance.. It's said piercings and Tats are required to work here - see how many you spot - locals for sure and good people!

Yelp
I've visited this Freebirds location at least a thousand times, the least I could do is give it a proper review. This spot is located in the heart of tech ridge, surrounded by a number of corporate offices and businesses, it always gets busy around noon. The good news is they always have enough staff on hand to control the lunch rush and get people in and out with their food. In comparison to Chipotle, Freebirds blows it's competition out of the water, out to to dry just like Chipotle's sad excuse for steak. The steak at Freebirds is tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. My wife usually goes vegetarian at most restaurants but always opts in for the dark meat chicken with her order, the chicken speaks for itself. I go deep when it comes to salsa, ALL the salsas in my bowl please, they have about 5-6 different types, each with its own zing and badabing. The portions are generous, easily one of my favorite selling points. The food and service is consistent, you'll get exactly what you want and how you want it each and every time, no surprises :)

Yelp
I am an avid Chipotle burrito guy but when my friend told me that he never goes to chipotle anymore because he found somewhere better I didn't think it was possible...and then I was proven wrong. Freebird's appeal come from their choice. It's not the same 4 meats, plain or brown rice or 1 tortilla type. You can really customize your burrito to range in taste and texture. Most of all, I was full after I finished it! I will definitely be back
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
Freebirds is always good for a tasty burrito experience. The problem with them is that you will get a lukewarm burrito. There simply no option for a hot burrito or bowl. The best is to order one to go with no lettuce and microwave it at home.
google avatar

Ike R.

Yelp
There is a strange whistling/chirp every minute that gets super annoying if you are eating here. I am not sure where it it coming from, but they should address it as it becomes nails on chalkboard.
google avatar

Victoria Y.

Yelp
It's freebirds!!!! It's always been better than chipotle and has great portions sizes! However I will say I do not come here for tacos although they are good this is a burrito joint not a taco shop
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Generally good. But they don't seem to mind putting old stale potatoes in your delivery order..
google avatar

Blair V.

Yelp
I feel like I can only eat here every once in a while. The menu is very similar to Chipotle but their way of cooking in terms of flavor is different. I think it might be the flavoring of their rice and proteins that really doesn't make you crave for more in my opinion. This place caters to the Austin vibe and is pretty laid back in terms of atmosphere and the workers. The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable as they should be of their menu.
google avatar

Hanna H.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE. They serve Raw chicken. Second time going to this freebirds and noticing the chicken was undercooked but this time it was definitely raw. Pls teach your cooks how to cook chicken properly. Unacceptable!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
I actually wasn't much of a Freebird fan in the past, but I have come to like it more with the options that they have compared to other said Burrito competitors. I love the sheer fact that they have queso! Who doesn't love queso?!? I'm not much a burrito fan, but I have realized that I really just enjoy melted cheese so much more, so therefore I've been getting quesadilla's a lot lately. They are giant and really tasty actually. I typically always get the chips and queso of course. Today I ventured outside the box and just went for the nachos since it takes care of my melted cheese and chips and queso issue. It was pretty awesome-tastic. Except I probably could have used more queso, the cheese to chip ratio today was low. But over all it was really filling and good. The price for the amount of food that I got was awesome too. The line was fairly long at this location during lunch hours but for the most part it moved pretty quickly. The parking lot can get a little crazy too here during lunch. There's a lot of surrounding businesses here. I did notice like a reverse lunch rush here. It was very busy around 11:30-11:50 and the line was empty at around 12:10-12:15 strange to me, since I assume most people go to lunch at 12:00. Either way the wait isn't too bad anyways. I will definitely put Freebirds back into my lunch rotation.

Courtni H.

Yelp
Everything was awesome. However, you need to give enough meat so we do not have to order extra meat. Otherwise driver fix. Other people

Bethany B.

Yelp
Lacking quality or systemic procedure. Guy made my monster in the lumps on tortilla format. The scoops are made to spread the toppings on the tortilla for even distribution..guess he was too pretty to do such a simple job right. Some people don't have money any less expensive places can bring them much joy and satisfaction but this ungrateful selfish worker chose rather to give a hard time. Plus the steak had the hard cartilage part left on and wasn't cut against the grain. It actually tasted like dog food and needs some tech's to upgrade this easy, and usually pleasing meal place. The beans and steak were cold too.
google avatar

Yelp
Different from what I remembered. The last time I went to a Freebirds was back in LA and that was maybe 6 years ago? Maybe it's due to COVID. I like how they took the necessary precautions such as: limiting the number of people in the restaurant, even instructing take out customers to wait outside, tables that are blocked off so you can be spaced out if you choose to eat indoors, moving the toppings from the bar to the other side of the kitchen so you don't spit in the food by accident when you are selecting your ingredients for your entree. The major problem that I had was the last part- I'm happy that they moved the bar, but I would recommend having a printed list of things in English and Spanish you can choose from and tape it to the bar window where you normally would choose which toppings you want. I think that would help first-time customers and customers like me who have not been there in a while. I understand the employees were busy making online take out orders and accommodating the in-store take out customers, but I think I waited 20-25 minutes for 4 customers ahead of me. I think this inefficiency was due to the previous reason I mentioned above, and the distance created when the employee has to repeatedly go to the bar to pick out the ingredients and come back to the customer to ask what's next, especially with the muffling speech due to the mask I can imagine how many time the employee has to ask the customer to repeat themselves. I think my recommendation can reduce this time and improve customer service because I can feel that the employee who was helping me to make my burrito was annoyed that I did not know the menu, and it took a little longer for me to choose my toppings than the regular customers. In terms of the food, I thought my cilantro rice was really salty and the steak I remembered being juicer. I would love to give it at try again post covid!
google avatar

Jason A.

Yelp
I ordered the nachos with seasoned chicken. The chips were ridiculously thin requiring the use of a fork. A FORK!! And I found one small piece of chicken, although it could have been dried queso. Who knows. And it's hard to ruin guacamole, but Freebirds managed to do it. Excuse me, can I get some guacamole with this lemon juuce? So sour and bland. And the chips were thin! Next time, I'll go to Taco Bell or Taco Cabana for better nachos.
google avatar

Yelp
always hard to leave an honest review but hope mgmt will read and fix. the good... half bird size so you aren't wasting half. the bad... food lacked flavor. wrap to big for protein. unpleasant to get through the ends. food was cold. disorganized assembly. impossible to hear workers with blasting music. building needs a cleaning. maybe dont paint accents bright yellow if you aren't going to clean them. I could go on but why. run, don't walk away IMO.

Ashley W.

Yelp
Luis and MARSHAL are great Employees They Offers to cook my meat well Done when I told them I was pregnant Everyone need Caring employees like this THANK YOU GUYS FOR YOUR HELPCilantro Lime Rice

Yelp
I had the basic freebird burrito with half chicken and half steak - it is not advertised on the menu but they will give you half and half chicken and steak upon request. The food was very good, and they give very generous portions. The queso is especially good. I also like the large selection of beverages. However, I requested extra salsa and they tried to charge me $1.70, so I told them I would pass. Charging for salsa is unacceptable, and hence the two stars. Those who are unfaithful in little things are not faithful in large things...hence I won't come back and do not recommend this location. Tip 1: on the way out, I noticed a poster advertising their 2 taco combo, which included 2 tacos, chips and salsa, and a fountain drink for $7.95 before 5:00 PM and $5.95 after 5:00 PM - seems like a very good deal. Tip 2: their loyalty program and app for smart phones is very nice and has some generous freebies.

Yelp
The Freebirds in Pflugerville is terrible, we place an order an hour ahead of time and then when we get there, they tell us 2p - 39o more min. that is BS. Take care of your customers !

Yelp
I just got a burrito sent to my apartment from this place. Freebirds' burritos are usually good, but this one in particular was spectacularly made. It was tight, with a perfectly even distribution of ingredients. My friends told me that it would be weird to call so I'm leaving a review so whoever made it knows. Bud, I appreciate the effort. Also, they called to make sure my dumb friend didn't get the quesadilla with no cheese that they ordered. They could have easily just made a bad quesadilla for my friend, but they made the extra effort to call to make sure. That's excellent customer service. Thanks for that y'all.
