A fun old building. Great environment. The food sounded outstanding but we found all the dishes were too salty, way too salty. If not for that the food would have been perfect from the Stuffed Cabbage, mashed potatoes, beef stew type dish amount others. The waitress was " ok". Not very polite or helpful. She seemed not to want to be there or preoccupied. The wait staff is often the first impression so .. Menu selection and pricing are good.

Went for the Chicken Schnitzel lunch special and was not disappointed. Hard to beat all this for $6.99! I got it with the fried potatoes and red cabbage. Both were really good. The servers were attentive and the atmosphere was peaceful. You can sit next to the windows upstairs and have a nice view of the Downtown streets.

Google
Really bad food. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I'll try. I ordered the cheddar bratwurst with fried potatoes and broccoli, and my friend had the schnitzel and red cabbage. The potatoes and broccoli were very bland, and the bratwurst seemed like something they grabbed from the grocery store next door. The cheese was awful and then they poured it all over the kraut, which turned it into a gooey mess. My friend said the red cabbage was decent; however, the snitzel was dry and over pounded and over cooked. He said the red cabbage was decent. Definitely won't be trying this place again.

Google
Restaurant located in older part of downtown, corner storefront, by a pretty fountain. Must say the front door was less than inviting, but once inside it was a warm woody, old world atmosphere you expect from an authentic German restaurant. It was our waitress' 1st day and you would never know it except for she didn't know what wheat beers they had, but did have a slip of paper that showed what beers they had on tap. We got want we wanted and ordered Pork Schnitzel with Fried Potatoes and Red Cabbage as well as Chicken Schnitzel with Bavarian Potato Salad. Schnitzels were really good 👍 Red Cabbage could have used a bit more tang. Potato salads were yummy! Restaurant was completely full, several patrons waiting for seats by the time we left. Would definitely return if in the area. Thanks

Google
If you’re looking for authentic German cuisine, look no further—this place is as authentic as it gets! The food is absolutely delicious. We loved it so much that we came back two days in a row. The service was excellent, especially at the bar, where we had some great conversations with the staff. They gave us spot-on recommendations, and everything we tried was phenomenal. The pretzels are soft, warm, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Whether you’re in the mood for burgers, sandwiches, or schnitzel, you simply can’t go wrong here. Pair your meal with an ice-cold stein of beer for the full experience. The décor is also on point—it really sets the mood and feels like you’ve stepped into a cozy German beer hall. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant

Google
Love this cozy little nook of a restaurant. Great German food and reasonably priced, especially lunch time prices. Large portions as well. We always plan to stop when we are traveling through the area.

First time visiting this amazing German restaurant with excellent, traditional dishes. The ambiance was welcoming. The staff was extremely friendly, courteous, and very accommodating. The food was delicious! The portions were extremely generous. I will be back again!

Google
Fun and affordable bar in the middle of downtown Johnson City, specializing in German food and beer. The Schnitzel I ordered could have fed a family of four!

Yelp
My third time here but I keep forgetting to review. Love this place and I keep coming back. Service is quick here (I've never waited for a table but we tend to eat before 6 PM). The wait for service is short. Two people at our table got pork schnitzel, and two got chicken schnitzel. One got chicken schnitzel with paprika sauce and I had the plain chicken schnitzel. Others had plain pork schnitzel and my wife had pork schnitzel with beer cheese sauce. Everything was great; next time I will get the plain pork schnitzel as I thought it was a little bit better. The beer cheese sauce on the pork schnitzel was really delicious. Overall, a cool space, faint German vibes, and a rustic interior. I've come three times and I will be back many more times.

Yelp
The service was a bit underwhelming; just went through the motions but got the order right, got it to the table and followed up. But didn't hover. The place itself, the Biergarten, had zero character basically a bar with a few tables in a space next to Food City. Now the food. We like German food a lot. We didn't like this stuff. She had sauerbraten, I had plain schnitzel . We both had red cabbage and Bavarian potato salad. The beer was good! The red cabbage was awful. It was some sort of clove flavored pink cabbage. It had been around a while. The potato salad could have used bacon, onions, more vinegar and flavor. It was warm and edible. The schnitzel was actually good; could have been thinner but it was the star of the meal. The sauerbraten was cut in 1" thick slices and dry as a bone. The gravy was not typical for sauerbraten but it was tasty. The meat would have actually been good in 1/2 " slices with more gravy. It was fork tender. The good thing was there was a lot of it and it was cheap. It is the best German food in the Tri cities. It is the only German food!

Yelp
Totally recommend the lunch situation at this downtown Johnson City restaurant. Between us we tried four of the entrees and four of the sides. We also added the bread and chive butter that is standard at dinner but not included with lunch unless you order it (totally worth it!). Everything was authentic and tasted wonderful. Water and (sweet) tea were served in glass mass steins, a fun touch. Our server had a great personality, checked on us often, and whatever is happening in the kitchen - it ensures hot food that comes out promptly. I'm confident dinner would be equally lovely, but for now I'm totally committed to the most affordable and tastiest lunch in the TriCities

Yelp
GERMAN FOOD, delicious, haven't had Germanfood that delicious since trips to Germany! It's such a treat to be able to feel like we are visiting GERMANY AGAIN, we are both in our 80s and look forward to be able to travel there again soon!!!!!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. I learned about it watching videos of Johnson City, and since I love German food, it was on the list. I came at dinner time and was seated immediately. I wasn't in the mood for a beer so had iced tea which was served in a huge mug. They brought out bread to start. It was slices of French bread. The bread was so cold I'm sure it was all prepped up and stacked in a cooler ready to go out. The butter was extremely chive flavored. If you like chives, you're in luck, but was too much for me. For my entree I ordered Sauerbraten with red cabbage and the fried potatoes. The food came out in just a few minutes from ordering. The beef was tender and the gravy tasty, however tasted nothing like Sauerbraten. It was a very good pot roast but was missing the flavors of sauerbraten, which I've had numerous times in the US and in Germany. The red cabbage was awful. I love traditional red cabbage. But a few bites of this was enough for me. The potatoes were ok but weren't good enough to eat more than a few bites as well. This place has very good reviews so either I came on an off night or I was expecting German food which this wasn't.

Yelp
Wow! The service and food at Freiberg's was excellent! Our waitress was a little fireball, rockstar! She knew the menu and explained everything well. My husband and I ordered the Brat Sampler and a lunch order of the Pork Schnitzel! Sooo glad we stopped here for lunch in Johnson City.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere, just downtown - right across from our Air B&B. Beer cheese pretzels are great (came with three) and German beer by the liter! Prompt attentive service as well. Loved it.

Mike F.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our first visit in the State of Franklin location. Our server was highly personable and helpful. The food quality was excellent for all 4 in our party anf quantities were more than adequate. We look forward to our next visit!

Yelp
Ugh, it was one of those places that I really wanted to like. I ordered breaded chicken which came with two sides. I picked cabbage as one of the sides and mashed potatoes as the second one. I really didn't like the cabbage. It was overwhelmingly sweet with some sort of chemical scent to it. It took up half of the plate and got mixed up in mashed potatoes when served. The chicken was okay, but overly greasy. The whole meal was not satisfying. There were few, if any, vegetarian dishes. On a good note, the service was pretty good and quick, although it made me doubt the quality of products since things were served so quickly. It felt like a diner. I don't think I would come back here again.

Yelp
So first let me state that my great grandmother was German and I spent most of my childhood eating the most amazing dishes. Dishes that I have been deprived of, and been searching for since she passed 20yr ago. My search has ended. The chicken and pork schnitzel were excellent. The sauerkraut tasted as if my grandmother made it. The red cabbage was some of the best I have ever eaten. The waitress and hostess were attentive and kept our drinks topped off and was very knowledgeable about the dishes. The whole restaurant was tiny but it wasn't loud and didn't feel cramped. If you are in the area and you like German cuisine this is the place. You will NOT be sorr

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere with authentic German cuisine at a reasonable price. Their schnitzel, fried potatoes and red cabbage are my go-to choice. Great selection of German beer too.
google avatar

Virginia K.

Yelp
The service here was spot on. The food was terrific. The schnitzel was delicious and the sauces were excellent. I also loved the red cabbage. Real German food is hard to find. This place is a gem. I highly recommend and the price is very good for the amount of food you get. I'll take pictures next time. It was so good I ate it all before I took a photo. lol.

Maureen B.

Yelp
Quantity and quality! Good menu selections of German favorites. Food arrived piping hot. Good value. Was recommended by hotel staff while passing through town, and we were glad we made the easy 10 minute drive to Freiberg's.

Danny Q.

Yelp
I must say that for the first time eating there i was highly disappointed. For one no one spoke German in the restaurant or knew much about it. The Boulette adreas was fine but lacking in onions which is a staple in German cuisine. The potatoes were also lacking in onions also. As for the service our server seemed like they would have been anywhere other than in the restaurant. Although I am willing to give it another chance with a different dish i was not very happy with this experience

Yelp
This place is awesome! Food is top notch and so is the beer! could eat here every day! Everyone was so friendly! And the place gives this cozy back room vibe.

Gene P.

Yelp
Freiburg, the location in downtown is close to parking and other venues. The food is as close as you will get to authentic German food without buying a plane ticket. The service is spot on and the decor is warm and inviting. Definitely a must visit while in Johnson City TN.

Yelp
Waited to get in this place on a chilly afternoon with no place inside to stand. We sent in one of our group to get our name on the list, and after the host never recognised his presence, nor bothered to even make eye contact, it was time to leave. We walked down the street to an Irish Pub and had an absolutely amazing meal with top notch service. Sorry Freiburg's, probably won't be back with so many better choices.

Robert M.

Yelp
Huge and very thinly pounded schnitzel. The side dishes were also amazing and they offer 32 ounce german beverages although my waitress didn't know that 32 ounces was a quart. It was still awesome.
google avatar

Tabitha H.

Yelp
Wow! The food was really good. You are greeted with a basket of sourdough bread and garlic herb butter. The waitress greeted us right away. The stein of water are big and heavy. The schnitzel and pan fried potatoes and red cabbage were very flavorful. The beer cheese is u believable. The rouladan babarian potato salad and mashed potatoes was amazing as well. The gravy was thick and delicious.

Yelp
Visited my son in JC and, having an Eastern European heritage, really enjoyed Freiberg's! Our (middle-aged) son had the bratwurst sampler and would get it again (he's a trained chef... as an aside). He had enough to take home for lunch the next day. I got a bowl of Octoberfest Potato Soup that we all tried and it was wonderful! My wife had paprika (pork) schnitzel - I had the paprika chicken. Both were yummy. We all had red cabbage and it was good... My wife found her fried potatoes spot on and (since we all sampled each others food) my son and I especially liked the Bavarian Potato Salad - the pickles and vinaigrette dressing was great but not mom's cup of tea. Paulaner weisbeer went well. Service with Damien was very excellent! Will likely go back when we visit in the future!

Anita L.

Yelp
Delicious fun place! Service was really welcoming. It's a lot of food, so come hungry! We split a chicken schnitzel - it was a little thicker than I would've expected but solid seasoning and crisp. Beer cheese was a cherry on top but the schnitzel could stand on its own. The red cabbage was sweet and sour. The potatoes fried in bacon is their most ordered side but I felt it was just okay. I also ordered one bratwurst on the side which came with sauerkraut. That was really delicious! Wonderful snap and went well with the sauerkraut and mustard. The bread and butter is also too good - I could easily just eat that! The Apple strudel had great filling (apples, cranberries, walnut) and served piping hot. My only complaint was that it came out mushy - almost like it was microwaved so that was a bummer! Flavor was still good though.

John T.

Yelp
We were seated quickly and our orders were taken. The Schnitzel was good but not up to European standards. The red cabbage was tasty as well as the mashed potatoes and gravy. I enjoyed the Schwarzbier. My GF (that's girlfriend) had the sausage and liked it well. Busy place, but the service was good and we tipped accordingly. Ambiance - Freibergs needs a bit of an upgrade. Their men's room was old, dirty, and in need of an overhaul. When a restaurant has good food, but is in desperate need of fixing up, one wonders what else is going wrong in their kitchen! This restaurant would have commanded a better rating - but cleanliness is a factor.

Yelp
The roast was really good. We also appreciated the pretzel and schnitzel platter appetizer. Chicken schnitzel was perfectly golden brown and well seasoned.

Marcus H.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. The boy hosting was atrocious and rude beyond words. We arrived at 6:00 pm Saturday evening and were seated, against our request near the exit door. The door opened and closed continuously with a blast of cold air each time. There were tables upstairs but we were refused those. Other people arriving after us got those seats and others who arrived after us got waited on before us. We never got waited on, never even acknowledged we were there. After a very long wait I told the boy hosting we were leaving , the experience was terrible and it had sucked. He said "We are glad you are leaving." It was all I could do to hold back my anger. I've been gong there for years but NEVER again and I'll do everything I can to tell everyone about this horrible experience.

Wayne A.

Yelp
Great German cuisine and service well worth a trip if you want to experience very good German food and great service then try this restaurant.

Catherine W.

Yelp
Authentic German food with a decor to match! The wait staff were friendly and very efficient!
google avatar

Ray C.

Yelp
Always a great place to eat. Six of us and service was great. Food was perfect. Several of us had the pork schnitzel and a few had the chicken schnitzel. Potatoes with bacon bits and onions was crazy good. And you can't skip the beer cheese...it goes well with everything!
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
Great authentic German restaurant in downtown Johnson City, TN! The place was packed but worth the wait. We had chicken schnitzel plates with fries, German potato salad and rotkohl (red cabbage). The schnitzel was tender on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside. We got the sauce add-ons -- beer cheese and jaegersauce. Both were good but I'd give the nod to the beer cheese. The German potato salad was great -- seasoned very well. The rotkohl was probably the best I've had outside of Germany. Some cloves along with the vinegar and not cloyingly sweet like it can sometimes be in German-American restaurants (where I guess some chefs assume Americans prefer sweet tasting things). Very good German biers on tap -- we had the hefeweizen and the dunkel. They offer a 16 oz or 32 oz size (a beer big gulp?). Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. A funky atmosphere in an old building downtown that made it seem even more authentic. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The restaurant was very well decorated and festive when I went around the holidays. I loved that they served beers in traditional beer mugs. The bread and butter was complimentary and good. The Chicken Schnitzel was really good but I wish the quantity was more especially for dinner portion. I felt like it was supposed to be the star of the meal but was overpowered by pretty much everything else. The cabbage was very good! The fries were my least favorite. Ordered apple strudel for dessert and that was a perfect combo of warm and cold. I'd go back for sure because I loved it overall but may be going during lunch as they have $5 lunch specials? That's gonna be another review another day. 7/10

Kimberley M.

Yelp
30 minutes for food, served other patrons who arrived 20 minutes later. Too many people not enough working.

A M.

Yelp
My husband and I enjoy eating German food. The food is good homeschooled German cuisine and the portions are large. The eatery is so quaint in the corner building and we like sitting by the front windows.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Living in the tri-cities there is not a lot of German food to choose from so we have always gone to Friebergs. Just visited Helen ga which has several German restaurants The second meal we had my daughter made the comment we take for granted what we have at home Friebergs is better than either meal we had in Helen. Love their bread and butter, never offered bread in either other one. Love Friebergs schnitzel with grilled onions and beer cheese. Asked for that and they did not offer it and seemed to never have considered it! All of that said....the tri-cities needs to appreciate what we have....and we will be going back to Friebergs soon!

Al B.

Yelp
Excellent German Food. Sauer Braten was flavorful and fall apart tender. Spaetzel was homemade and fluffy. Portions are more than generous. I go here everytime I am in Johnson City.
google avatar

Yelp
First time coming here and I'm very impressed. We were greeted and sat as soon as we walked in. For starters I ordered the Saxon potato skins for an appetizer and a liter of Dunkel (beer). The potato's skins were pretty darn good. They came topped with bacon, cream cheese, Swiss cheese, and spinach. For our entrees, she ordered the schnitzel with red cabbage and Bavarian potato salad. I ordered the jaeger schnitzel with broccoli and Bavarian potato salad. We both thought the food was delicious and pretty darn authentic. I'd also like to say, the portions were huge so you won't leave hungry. In fact you'll prob take some home. Our server was Scott. He was very knowledgeable and did an amazing job! If I'm ever back in Johnson city, I'll make sure to eat here again!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
We made a recent visit to enjoy the Oktoberfest specials available at what I've long called Johnson City's best restaurant -- only to come away a bit disappointed. Here's why: The restaurant was out of potato pancakes even though we showed up just after lunch. How did they run out so quickly? And yet we didn't find this out until the other parts of our order began to arrive. One of the schnitzels we got was pretty heavily overcooked. The fried potatoes appear to have changed through the years. The potatoes used to be cut into bite sized pieces that were cooked deliciously. Now it's more like potatoes getting quartered and very lightly browned. We were hardly into our entrees when the waitress asked if we wanted to order dessert. How about giving us a chance to eat the main course first, ma'am? I would hate to think Freiberg's is beginning to slip into mediocrity, as we've been such massive supporters for so long. Let's hope they correct the issues and find their way back to greatness once more.

Rhonda H.

Yelp
Food is Always good. The Service is usually ok, considering it's a college town, I guess.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
Amazing food, huge portions, great service and cool atmosphere. What more could you ask! Definitely check this place out. The goulash was phenomenal

Barbara H.

Yelp
Schnitzel always great! Fried potatoes, today, had no bacon so we had to track down the waitress and request it even though the menu says the potatoes come with green onions and bacon ( thee best!). The wait staff should ALWAYS make sure the meals are correct and plated properly! In any restaurant. Excellent schnitzel, red cabbage and ( eventually) fried potatoes!

Justin S.

Yelp
Best German in Tennessee! Great food, great service, and great location! Worth the visit if you are in the JC - Kingston area!
google avatar

Skip W.

Yelp
Very nice place and friendly staff but portions were very small and they do not make their own Red Cabbage. Not very authentic at all as far as German food! I drove an hour each way to try this place because the reviews were good but it's not anything special or worth the trip. You will leave hungry and let down if you know good German food.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Stumbled across this spot on a recon of Johnston City. We are looking for new places to move from Asheville, my town is not what it used to be. Anyway, we found Freibergs right in the middle of town, wonderful location. Old city vibe inside, service was terrific, quick and happy. Ice cold liter of Warsteiner was a great start on a hot day. Jagel Schnitzel for lunch, huge portion with red cabbage and German potato salad, enough for 2. She had the brat plate - enough for 3!! We had a solid lunch for the next day with these leftovers. All in, with beer - $35.00. Outstanding value. Worth the drive from Asheville, we will definitely be back soon.

Thomas A.

Yelp
Service was prompt, servings generous, and flavor delightful; a delightful taste of German cuisine
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
Authentic German restaurant. Fair warning, this food is heavy, so come with an empty stomach. The Bavarian potatoes are delicious - steamed potatoes with vinegar. Very speedy service and a cool atmosphere.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Lunch is awesome time to go..great specials and awesome food and service! Very consistent!

Ruth B.

Yelp
Wonderful German Food. The Lunch was late is more that enough for a meal and even enough for a carry out for later. The schnitzel is my favorite.. Our family loves it and we always go after Christmas.
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
If you enjoy really good German cuisine, I mean REALLY good German food, then run don't walk to Freiberg's! Their food is sooooo amazing and their prices are incredible! Go with a group and try Everything! Even their bread with herbed butter will make you over the moon happy! The ambiance is cozy casual and the servers are genuinely nice and helpful! This WILL become one of your "go-to" restaurants in Johnson City! Love them
google avatar

Rusty J.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service was even better. We enjoyed our visit to Freiber's from the time we entered to the time we departed the restaurant. I ordered a Freiberg Schnitzel with a side of kraut and german potato salad. The schnitzel was made of fried pork. It was flavorful and tender. One of my friends ordered the chicken schnitzel with a side of fried potatoes. It was super. Our server, Michael, was a star! He gave recommendations in a way you could tell that he REALLY likes the food that he's serving. He also convinced me, a non beer drinker, to order a beer! A beer that I enjoyed. He kept check on us all night. He removed our plates at the appropriate time. He informed us that the portion sizes are huge. He delivered complimentary bread and spread to our table at the beginning. The restaurant resides in an old building that has been restored. We were seated at an upstairs table. The atmosphere is pleasant. The place is clean. The downtown location is cool!

Yelp
Really really good Chicken Schnitzel! I love their bread and green onion butter. Always clean and helpful staff. Always a joy to come here.

Yelp
Good size Portions and tasty food. Service was fast and friendly and I love the view from upstairs
