New Design Hotels in Colorado’s Historic Mining Towns - AFAR

"Converted from an 1884 train depot by a preservation-minded family into an events space in 2018, this adaptive-reuse project emphasizes working-class architectural stories that often get overlooked: salvageable out-buildings were repurposed (an old lime shed now stores antiques found during demolition and restoration, and a lumber shed serves as a bandstand), and the overall restoration later earned a state chapter American Institute of Architects excellence-in-design award." - Nicholas DeRenzo

We had our wedding at Freight in July, and it was everything we dreamed of. The views are absolutely amazing as we held our ceremony in the Meadow and our reception outside with views of the mountains and the rustic charm of the venue. You can feel the love and care the owners put into renovating the space. It’s warm, unique, and full of character. The onsite cabins were a huge plus for our guests and made the whole weekend feel extra special and intimate with getting to spend more time together around the fire pit. Ashley was amazing to work with leading up to the big day, and Carrie made sure everything went off without a hitch. The bartenders crushed it, as we got multiple compliments from guests on how good the drinks were. Freight truly is a one of a kind venue and we couldn’t imagine having our perfect day anywhere else.

We had the wedding of our dreams at Freight in Leadville, Colorado, and we cannot recommend this venue highly enough! From start to finish, every aspect of our experience was exceptional, creating a truly unforgettable weekend for us and our guests. The staff at Freight were nothing short of phenomenal. Their professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail made us feel so supported throughout the planning process and on the big day itself. They went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the joy of our celebration. The venue itself is stunning, and the included chairs and tables were both stylish and comfortable, perfectly complementing the rustic elegance of the space. We opted to upgrade to vintage China and glassware through our incredible wedding planner, Stellar and Sage, and it was such a worthwhile decision. The delicate, timeless pieces added a touch of sophistication to our reception, elevating the entire dining experience. The bar service was another highlight—our guests raved about the excellent drinks and the friendly, efficient bartenders who kept the energy high all night long. The getting-ready spaces for the bridal party were absolutely gorgeous and so unique. The girls got ready in the interior suite, which was beautifully appointed and felt like a luxurious retreat. Meanwhile, the guys loved the Whiskey Lime Lounge outside, a cool and relaxed space that perfectly suited their vibe. These thoughtfully designed areas made the morning of the wedding feel so special and stress-free. One of the most unique touches we added was a hat bar on the stage at Freight, where all our guests could design their own custom cowboy hats with the incredible team from Wool and West. We cannot say enough good things about Wool and West—they were absolutely fantastic! Their creativity, professionalism, and enthusiasm made the experience so fun, and our guests were over the moon about their one-of-a-kind hats. It was such a perfect addition to our Colorado mountain wedding and a keepsake our guests will treasure forever. Another absolute highlight—and my personal favorite part of the wedding—was Nugget, the miniature donkey who served as our “beverage burro” during cocktail hour. This adorable little star wandered around with drinks in her saddlebags, charming everyone with her sweet demeanor and stealing the show. Nugget brought such a joyful, whimsical vibe to the event, and our guests couldn’t stop talking about how cute she was. It was a moment we’ll never forget! One of the best decisions we made was buying out all the cabins on the property for our wedding party. Having our closest friends and family stay on-site created such a warm, intimate wedding weekend experience. The cabins were cozy, charming, and perfectly integrated into the venue’s mountain setting, making it feel like our own private retreat. It fostered a sense of togetherness that we’ll cherish forever. The absolute showstopper, though, was our decision to buy out the Leadville Train for the ceremony. Freight’s iconic Leadville Train ride was such a unique and magical touch, transporting all our guests to the ceremony in style. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that tied in so beautifully with the venue’s historic charm and the rugged beauty of Leadville. Our guests are still talking about how special it was to arrive at the ceremony via train, with the stunning Colorado landscape as the backdrop. Freight isn’t just a venue—it’s an experience that brought our vision to life in ways we couldn’t have imagined. If you’re looking for a place that combines breathtaking scenery, top-notch service, and unique features like no other, Freight is the perfect choice. We’re already counting down the days until we can return to relive the magic!

I absolutely loved my stay with Freight! I stayed in the Frankie Cabin and it was a dream. So adorable! The bed was also extremely comfortable. They had a nice selection of teas and coffees that made it extra cozy which was very nice since it was pretty cold outside during my stay. The staff was very communicative and friendly during my stay. They also kept me up to date on the events happening in their event center. I attended a comedy show and a winter market during my stay and would highly recommend both! I hear they’re dog friendly, as well. I wish I would have brought my pup. Guess I will just have to come back! 10/10 would stay again!

I stayed here 3 times over the fall. The cabins are cute. I enjoyed the fact they are separate buildings. Each one I stayed in was always clean. Loved the in floor heat on the cold nights. Check in was easy. They texted each day to make sure my stay was going well and if I needed

Freight was our wedding venue and it was an amazing experience. Our families appreciated the opportunity to stay on-site and it had a summer camp vibe for our loved ones throughout the weekend. The cabins are beautiful and well-stocked with everything you might need, and the location is walking distance everywhere in downtown Leadville. The Freight staff helped our day go smoothly from start to finish, including an off-site ceremony, live band in the bandstand for cocktail hour, and smores when the sun went down. We wanted a unique mountain wedding venue and found it at Freight - our guests are still talking about how special the venue was and how friendly all of the staff were. We definitely plan to return in the future to stay in the cabins again!

The check-in process was smooth and friendly. The cabin was very cozy and welcoming, while the location was awesome. Walking distance to the railroad and town, close to gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores. Would absolutely stay again if we're back in Leadville.

This was my first visit to FREIGHT, and I attended their "Yak" event. So i attended the venue but did not see or stay in the rooms. The style and ambiance of the venue is just beautiful and adorable and quaint. I love the rustic with modern touches. They were very attentive st the event and it was a very comfortable setting! I wish I lived closer to come much more often. Beautiful space.

We got married 9.23.23 at FREIGHT and let my tell you it was the place of my dreams! Every idea I had was played out and working with the staff and Carrie at Stellar and Sage was AMAZING! We rented the onsite cabins for our guests and it was perfect to have our family and friends so close. FREIGHT not only fulfilled my husbands dream of trains but also worked for my rustic barn esthetic. Leadville is a quaint little town that was a perfect getaway for our guests and a beautiful location for a wedding. We had our ceremony in a field and then did cocktail hour in the courtyard and reception inside FREIGHT. The whole experience was worth it and I recommend it to all! Are you looking for a true Colorado wedding with 14,000 foot mountains as your backdrop? A venue that has lodging and space. for many? The opportunity to include a historic train in all of it? Look no further than FREIGHT

Yelp
On a recent road trip, my wife and I were fortunate enough to stumble on Freight. What an amazing place. The main building is a completely restored and renovated freight depot. The local tourist train still runs past it in the late morning and early afternoon. The room is spectacular. Open and airy. It's used often for weddings and community events. It's also where you check in for one of the cabins and the property. Each cabin is uniquely named after one of the local legendary ladies of the night of Leadville. They're nicely appointed with a comfortable bed, music system, chairs and mini kitchen. We could have stayed here for a week easily but were here for just the night. The staff are all super friendly and the resident chocolate Lab, Timber, will greet you with a friendly bark. If you're looking for a mix of modern and rustic, this is your place. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My husband and I were driving from Denver to Glenwood Springs and wanted to stop for the night midway. Freight was the perfect cozy stop for the chilly night. The bed was incredibly comfortable and we really appreciated the coffee and the altitude care package. I would recommend Freight to anyone looking for a unique and fun experience.

Yelp
Looking for a friendly and clean place to stay in Leadville? The S'Lumber Yard is a great place to recharge in this portion of the mountain region. Close to some great hiking, skiing, and cross country skiing.

Yelp
Fabulous stay up in Leadville thoughtful modern cosy design. We had drinks and chatted with staff upon arrival, be sure to checkout the shed out front with all kinds of hidden treasures and insta worthy photo backgrounds. Bed was comfy and we listened to some old records in the room. Close to everywhere you want to explore around town. And they had cute amenities for our dog. Highly recommend this place for your stay in Leadville!

Yelp
A really perfect stay in Leadville at FREIGHT and the S.L.umber Yard cabins. The pictures don't do it justice. The cabins are in excellent condition and are very beautiful (these aren't prefab tiny homes). Charcuterie boards on site + cocktails/beer/wine. Elsa (operator) was very friendly and accommodating. The site is pet friendly and offer dog beds and bowls in the cabin + ample space for dogs and kids to play. Great stop!

Yelp
Incredible experience from start to finish! Every detail was thought through to perfection when creating both the event hall and the cabins. The cabins are super cozy, with thoughtful decor, a piping hot shower, a convenient kitchenette and the most comfortable bed imaginable. The event space is truly gorgeous, with tall ceilings, an open floorplan and tons of character. I've worked in events for 20+ years and it is one of the most warm and welcoming spaces I've visited. Love their concept of being The "Yes" Place as they are open to hosting all sorts of events, and I have no doubt that Elsa and team will do an amazing job bringing any sort of experience to life. Highly recommend for hosting an event of any type and/or a comfortable home base while exploring the nearby mountains.
