On the Grid : The Fremont Troll

"In Fremont there is a giant troll sculpture under a bridge. The troll was actually the winner of a competition sponsored by the Fremont Art Council in 1980. You don't really need to go and see it; you just need to know it's there." - Wintr

Such a cool, beautiful little place to visit. You and your loved ones will be sure to enjoy this place- especially the kids. It has a trail that you walk through and info about the trees and their importance in our world. There is also a turtle there where you can sprinkle some water on it and a make a wish. The flowers are so beautiful. It is very relaxing and peaceful. My family and I went early in the morning which is a perfect time to go, we had the whole area to ourselves, we really loved it. Please be respectful of the surrounding residents, the trail and garden statues- no littering or destruction of property- help keep it clean and beautiful.

Google
Free tourist attraction. For decades we've taken out of towners to the Fremont Troll. It's too quirky not to go! There are stairs now to get up on him. It's still a little dirty but you have to make a visit to the troll, even for good luck! Great stop!

Nathan Cole

Google
No tickets needed, just drive slow and snag a picture. Such a hole in the wall for an attraction and completely random. It's definitely an odd one and fascinating. Wasn't too busy.

Thu L.

Google
The Fremont Troll lives under the bridge and is pretty cool to see in person! It looks small in pictures, but it’s actually huge up close. Nearby, there’s also a little turtle statue where you can pour water and make a wish — a fun and unique touch!

Grace

Google
is a giant sculpture under the bridge—kind of quirky and fun to see, though there’s nothing particularly special about it. Still, it’s become one of the most visited spots in Seattle. There’s also a small garden nearby, which makes it a nice quick stop if you’re exploring the area

Gus

Google
This is a picture worthy attraction of a giant troll under the bridge holding a real 50s-60s Volkswagen Beetle. Don’t be shy to climb up with your friends to get some cool fun shots. Also check out the park to the right, you’ll get a cool view of the city from there.

Tara H

Google
It's a giant concrete troll sculpture under the Aurora Bridge with a VW Beetle in one hand. It's been around since the 90s. They added stairs to the side of it, and it's easier to get to the trolls shoulders. On the day we went, it was clean and not too busy. Parking is street parking and can be difficult to find since it is in a neighborhood. It's good for a quick look if in the area but not worth a whole day adventure.

Google
Fun spot uniquely Seattle! I have been to Seattle four times and finally visited the bridge troll. It was worth the uber ride over. A unique work of art you will find only here. If you have kids, it’s a fun place for pictures of them too since you can sit up on the troll in various places. Nine minute Uber ride from the Space Needle
google avatar

Mirrella B.

Yelp
I stopped to check out the troll. It was neat to see. The day I went was not busy. I went close in the evening. The troll is larger than I thought it would be.There was only a group of three others there taking pictures. Parking was a bit difficult to find. Make sure you read the signs in the areas that you park. Overall, it is definitely a must to see if you're in Seattle!
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
I actually took the bus here from my hotel. It was quick and easy to get to. It's a great quick stop to take a photo if you have a car.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for fun, random things/sculptures. Haha This was on many lists of "things to do in Seattle" when I researched so of course I had to add it onto mine. Fun fact: that is a real VW bus in his hand.
google avatar

Winter B.

Yelp
The Fremont troll is a Seattle icon! Definitely check it out if you are in the area. Fun photo opportunity.
google avatar

Yelp
A literal troll under a bridge, that's what he is. A public sculpture of a troll in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle draws many visitors, and we were two of them on our last visit to the fair city. Our friends told us about him so we had to go. 18 feet and made of concrete, the Troll was "constructed in 1990 after winning a Fremont Arts Council competition for designs to improve the freeway underpass, which then was a dumping ground" (atlasobscura.com). If you're a fan of cool public art like I am, you can find him under the Aurora Bridge in Seattle.
google avatar

Ally C.

Yelp
I'm not TROLLING you when I say this is a must see in Seattle! There's not much to do here but it's a really interesting thing to see. There's also a small park nearby and the moss turtle. I recommend seeing it at least once when in Seattle.
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
It's an ugly troll that lives under the bridge. Quite a sight to behold. If you're into weird tourist attractions, this is worth a visit in Seattle.
google avatar

Michaela R.

Yelp
If you're in the area I'd stop by and see the troll. It's cool and unique. Once you see it, I don't think you'll have to go back, but it's a cool work of art.
google avatar

Les R.

Yelp
I found it a bit out of the way from downtown but so happy we made the trip over to see it. We combine our trip over to Gas Works Park with a stop at the Fremont Troll. So much fun to see and check out the surrounding garden. In my opinion, well worth the a visit and absolutely something to see. The Fremont Troll is located in the Fremont Neighborhood of Seattle at North 36th Street, Troll Ave N, under the Aurora Avenue Bridge. It is breathtaking and something to see. All visitors were courteous of other taking pictures aside from a few over zealous kids with the occasional photo bombs but all in all very friendly environment. It is something to see with the captivating eyes and details but then realizing that is an actual old school Volkswagen Bug (Beatle) the troll is holding onto makes it even more spectacular.
google avatar

Dianna B.

Yelp
Street art at its finest I don't know anything about it, other than it exists and was a must see on the list of things to do. Parking is hard or procure, so be patient and understanding do not run over the pedestrians that will invariably cross your path. Take some time and explore the fairy forest too.
google avatar

Samir H.

Yelp
A great pit stop but nothing to plan if it's out of the way. Stayed for 1 minute for a picture and left.
google avatar

Sindu K.

Yelp
Cool statue under the bridge, easy to find and there is plenty of street parking nearby. It's free of charge plus there is also a cool turtle statue nearby. It's usually never crowded. Would recommend stopping by this place if you are nearby, not a must do tho.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
Short, but sweet. This troll is under a bridge on Fremont street. it's easily accessible, though parking nearby may be a little bit difficult. This sculptures has been seen in many movies/media, and it really is the only thing in the area. Its kinda neat to turn a corner and have this behemoth just sitting there. If you are in the area, you should go and give it a look see.
google avatar

Vincent P.

Yelp
The Fremont Troll is a popular street art attraction in Seattle, but it's not a must unless you're in the area and want to see it. You can park at Gas Works Park and walk here, which is a moderate 20 mins~ stroll. There will be incline to get up the hill, so take that into consideration as well. You can also try to find parking in the area, but parking can be difficult to find. There is also many food spots on the street south of the Fremont Troll, so make sure to check the stores out if you're looking for a bite.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Get the background on the troll to understand why this was created. A great photo op for visitors. I didn't make it up the stairs.
google avatar

Denise W.

Yelp
So looking at the picture, Fremont Troll changes once in awhile. The Troll eye used to have the hubcap but that is now gone. The car used to be painted red but now it is color less. The purpose of the troll is to stop people homeless from living under the bridge and to bring the community together and it worked very well. It is now an attraction site. This is pretty cool. Great for photo taking for sure.
google avatar

Claudia M.

Yelp
Fremont troll Beautiful sculpture Very busy Hard to take pictures at times Totally recommend for a tourist
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
It's the Fremont Troll, if in the Seattle area you have to pop by to take a gander. Your little ones will enjoy this enormous cement troll lurking under a bridge. All that was missing were the three billy goats.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Popular but I also don't really care much for it to be honest. My favorite detail is the concrete-covered car, looks like it might be Volkswagon bug. It's something you come to look at, but only if it's on your way
google avatar

Yelp
Coming to visit Seattle for the first time, I knew I had to visit this spot. It's not a spot to stay long at but rather a quick pit stop under the bridge to take some photos. You know, to have proof that you've been there. I came on a random weekday during the afternoon and there weren't a ton of people around but definitely still enough people where everyone's waiting for each other to finish taking pictures with the Troll. The wait to take a picture isn't long and there's even a small trail on the right to walk through, although I wouldn't walk to far up since there were some tents set up towards the end of the trail. Cool sculpture to stop at when in Seattle. It's a bit out of the way since it's not in downtown, not that there's any space for a huge Troll in downtown, but there's plenty of things to check out in Fremont so it's worth the trip!
google avatar

Yelp
Along the windy roads of Queen Anne towards funky Freemont, deep underneath the viaduct of the Aurora Bridge, lies the TROLL! Who is the troll you ask? WELL - he's a massive stone etched man crawling out of the ground to welcome you to Seattle! He's a popular attraction that thankfully isn't always crowded, with a TON of parking, walkable trails nearby, large enough to climb on for a photo op and is a little piece of quirky paradise. Another fun, "must see" when exploring the city!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I mean it was pretty cool, I think the attraction is a fun side bar, while doing other stuff in the area. If your visiting the troll, go hit uneedaburger or the woodland park zoo for some more Fremont fun, I hope they have the world naked bike ride again this year... That's always a fun Fremont stop. Love Fremont in general, so stop in and visit on your travels.

Yelp
Troll statue under the Aurora Bridge. Parking is difficult. It can be very busy in the area for the weekend. My friends and I decided to just drive passed it. Took a quick snapshot while driving by, and decided not to get down and take a picture with the troll. Definitely a random attraction site. Cool to check out if you've never been before.
google avatar

Derrick G.

Yelp
Fremont Troll is a fun attraction and statue. It's a great place for pictures and a good place to take a walk. There are a lot of stairs, but you don't need to take the stairs to see the statue. This is a fun place to visit.
google avatar

Casey K.

Yelp
The Fremont Troll is located under the Aurora Bridge in a neighborhood not far from downtown Fremont. The Troll is pretty large and is a perfect spot to stop for a photo op. I stopped by on a Friday morning and it wasn't too busy. It's also an easy walk from Gas Works Park and downtown Fremont. The Troll is a unique art piece and is like nothing I've seen before. It also looks cuter in person than in photos. I recommend stopping by!
google avatar

Jocelyn A.

Yelp
A really cool attraction! If you're in the Fremont area, this a cool place to visit. They have parking around the area and during the week around the late afternoon, there was no one there so you can take a bunch of photos! Right next to the troll, there's a really cute Troll's Knoll Forrest that you can walk around. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Glen N.

Yelp
My wife's review: "He's ugly- he's like a creepy wizard who lost his hat". The Troll lives under the Aurora Bridge (or George Washington Memorial Bridge, if you are mansplaining), at N. 36th and Troll Avenue. Big, unique, free photo ops are worth 5 stars, though he alone isn't worth a trip to Fremont. Plan a few hours to also see the topiary dinosaurs, Rocket, Lenin statue, Center of the Universe, pretty bridges, and to check out the shopping district, especially during the Sunday market. He is the result of attempts to rehabilitate the area in 1990. The winning design was created by four local artists who sculpted the Scandinavian troll him out of 13,000 pounds of rebar, wire, and concrete. He is 18 feet high, not quite as high as the kids he was meant to displace.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
I mean it is what it says it is lol. It is indeed a troll statue under a bridge. My friends brought me here and honestly at first, I was satisfied with seeing it from the car. However, since we parked I decided to look at it up close. It was interesting to know someone took the time to create this statue. Admirable honestly and cool once I looked at it. It's also clever since a troll under a bridge. Need I say less? But seriously, if you're around the area why not check this statue out? It's pretty cool and some people even came to have a photo shoot. Kids also played around it and it's nice to know it brought people joy. They have a donation box as well if you want to support the statue!
google avatar

Gillian A.

Yelp
To help eradicate trash dumping and drug dealing activity under Aurora Bridge, an art contest in 1990 was held for art placement under the bridge resulting in this 18-ft troll that can be seen today. Pretty cool statue. Most people that I saw at the time here did some climbing maneuvers to stand and pose on top of the troll's left hand (looked a little slippery heading up there). I walked from Gas Works Park to here (took about 20 min). As a heads up, the walk from North 34th Street to the troll has a bit of an incline. Worth the little workout!
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Glad we were able to stop to visit the troll! Would mainly recommend if you are only in the area, but still a unique thing to see!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
So cool to see Art in this form... this was in a scene in the movie 10 things I hate about you.
google avatar

Alyanna C.

Yelp
If you're in the neighborhood, the Fremont Troll is a quick stopover to check out in this very quirky neighborhood. It's literally a giant troll statue under the bridge, and it's nice that it's not super trashed or vandalized for an art installation under a bridge. When I was a Seattle local we used drive by it a lot to say hi, but sometimes it's nice to get out and get a closer look at it. Not sure if it's lit up at night, so I would recommend checking it out in the day time. While you can drive up to it, at busier times (like the weekend) you may need to park on the nearby streets and walk up to it. Even so, I've never seen it get super crowded since it's a very, very local attraction for the Fremont neighborhood. It's also an easy walk from other attractions like the Fremont Rocket or the Theo Chocolate Factory. Long live the Fremont Troll!
google avatar

Darci K.

Yelp
You may have grown up hearing that trolls live under bridges... well, they do! Especially in Fremont on Troll Avenue. Fremont is a quaint area, and the troll adds to it. He is nestled under the bridge/extension to the freeway. If you're lucky enough to find a place to park in the neighborhood, do it!! Walk over and make friends with the troll. This unique piece of art has been here for eons, and the neighborhood has grown up around him. I secretly wish that people wouldn't climb all over him, just to preserve him, and prevent deterioration. Once you've " paid the troll " to crossover, check out the underpass design of the freeway. It's super cool. If you follow the street, it will lead you to the gasworks park. Add it to your must check this out in Seattle list. There are tons of places to discover in Seattle, don't miss out on the troll!
google avatar

Teresa M.

Yelp
The Fremont Troll is one of Seattle's many Easter Eggs and one of the many things that makes this particular neighborhood super awesome. Built a little over 30 years ago, this was installed to deter homeless people from camping under the bridge and it works very well! Definitely a popular place for people to hang out and take some photos - how can you say no to a troll crushing a 60s bug?! This is in a neighborhood so there's fairly easy, free street parking. Please keep in mind that people live here and not block the roads or driveways. There's a park near by that has lots of colour during the flowering months. In general this is a safe neighborhood and it's a great place to walk around!
google avatar

Janet N.

Yelp
Just rewatched the movie 10 things I hate about you and realized I hadn't visited the Fremont troll recently! It's a fun stop, no vandalism, an epic view under the bridge, and a giant troll. Parking is easy to find and you can drive right up. We went in the middle of the day on Friday and people trickle in and out throughout the day but it's never too busy and nobody hangs out long.
google avatar

Marcus S.

Yelp
The Fremont Troll is a sculpture under a bridge - just like in the fables, not like people on internet forums. The troll is a great piece composed of concrete, steel and wire. As grungy as the area is with stickers and grafitti, it doesn't seem the troll is defaced like many some other structures in the area. Still though there is a contribution box nearby which I'm sure supports the cleaning of the sculpture and the immediate area. The actual bridge has been around since the 1930s but the idea to add something new to the area and to create the sculpture was started in 1989. On nice days if not too many other people around you can score a nice picture of or with it. If you're in the area and like sculpture art be sure to drop by. It is quite a nice piece that isn't in a museum or gallery, requiring a fee. If you visit, do your part and help keep the troll clean.
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
The troll of Fremont. That is all. Just kidding. The fremont troll is a nice photo opportunity as it's iconic and there isn't another art piece like it around. There isn't a ton of parking around the area ( as most of it is residential) but if you go early, it shouldn't be a problem.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
For the longest time I never understood why there was a giant troll in Seattle or how the two were connected, but I do now! If you were wondering like me, the Seattle community voted on proposals designed by four finalists and the Fremont Troll was ultimately selected. Right in front of the troll is a plaque that lays out the history of its existence. The troll is located under the Aurora Bridge. There is free parking around the area which is nice given this is a tourist attraction that could get packed. Tourists and locals alike were here when I arrived and were climbing on the sculpture taking pictures so there might be a wait until your turn. You can spend anywhere from a couple minutes to half an hour if you decide to grab one of the benches right in front of the troll and eat lunch. It's more of the more iconic tourist spots in Seattle and is worth stopping by even if it's just to get out of the car, take some pictures, and leave.
google avatar

Candace L.

Yelp
I've been to Seattle several times and had never made my way over to this area. We had our first visit to the Fremont Troll. I, like most have seen it on every must see list for Seattle. We walked here from the Theo Chocolate Factory Tour and then walked back to our hotel a few miles away. There was a short line to snap your pic but what I've discovered lately is a short line isn't too bad, because you can always ask someone to grab a picture for you versus going super early or late when no one else is around. I'd say this is a fun visit if you're in the area, or looking to take a nice little stroll to the Fremont area.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
This iconic sculpture(?) is still guarding the bridge and still has that same death grip on the VW as I remember. A visit to this uniquely Seattle tourist stop and a good photo op as well is well worth the time. There's even a donation lock box at the front left section to keep this beast well fed and looking good. Lots of street parking in the area and lots of car and foot traffic as well, so please be safe when visiting.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
When in Seattle....coffee, gum wall, and the FREMONT TROLL! Lol!! Ten minutes to find, plus ten minutes of entertainment is all you need. I actually thought this troll was located at the beach based on the sand I've seen in many other photos. But, he's actually underneath the Aurora Bridge. You'll want to drive down and park in the residential area, off of Troll Ave & N. 36th St. Fun fact, the troll is crushing a VW Beetle in his left hand and has a shiny, metal left eye. Don't think the lip stain on our visit was part of the original masterpiece, but it did bring some dimension to it. Kids thought it was fun to climb up the fingers of this 18ft sculpture designed by Steve Badanes. Other humans found their way to its shoulders from behind. The area was pretty tidy, which is the main purpose of creating this work of art in this residential area...to prevent dumping and keep illegal activities away. Fremont Troll....check! :-)
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
Fun, free attraction underneath the Fremont bridge, there is also a little garden nearby. This doesn't take more than a 5-10 min visit to take some photos and climb around, so decide if it's worth it to you. There are no nearby bathrooms, restaurants or attractions. Area is in a safe neighborhood. Accessible by nearby bus station, and there is free street parking if you can find it.
google avatar

Kyle B.

Yelp
Just a dusty sculpture to say you visited a landmark in the city. Several city buses make stops above the bridge & you can then walk about a block.
google avatar

Pat P.

Yelp
An attraction unique to Seattle. It's free. Its a massive sculpture under a bridge great for a quick stop for some pictures.
google avatar

Laurent L.

Yelp
Okay, so this was not on our itinerary at all. My sister had brought up this public sculpture when we were trip planning, but being that this was a trip for our parents, who had never been to Seattle, the Fremont Troll was definitely not high on our priority list. But lo and behold, it was a 2 minute walk from where we had dinner on our first night in Seattle. So I guess that darn troll was just meant to be. I can't help but feel trolled. And you know what, that giant colossal troll really sits under a bridge, just like in the folklore. If you look carefully, the troll is clutching a Volkswagen Beetle, which apparently once held a time capsule. Anyway, this was originally meant to be a project to rehabilitate this area under the bridge where drug dealers once lurked. It apparently worked because now, there are so many tourists that come by, it'd be impossible to be clandestine. We came when it was after sunset, and there were cars pulling up non stop. It was actually kinda comical. We were all here to just look at this big ugly troll.
google avatar

Calvin C.

Yelp
5 stars because the Fremont Troll was decked out in pride colors during Pride Month. Such a pleasant surprise for the visit! The troll looks amazing if you are walking up the street towards it. Parking is easy around the neighborhood.
google avatar

Erich L.

Yelp
An interesting part of Seattle city culture. I like seeing things that make a city unique. It's worth a quick stop to see this.
google avatar

Raychel R.

Yelp
This is a pretty iconic tourist spot in Seattle. It's unique and within walking distance to Fremont's many restaurants. Or you can walk further and hit up the Wallingford neighborhood. It's in a residential area, so there's quite a bit of parking. I saw many people park, jump out and take a pic, then get back in their cars and leave. Mind you, it's pretty large, so there's plenty of spots to take your pics from. However, be aware that when you see kiddos nearby, they will want to climb all over the troll and photobomb your pics. Lol.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Neat statue that's popular in movies, which I was unaware of. It's under a bridge in a busy street. It's honestly a quick stop for a photo op for adults. There were a few young kids running around having fun, taking pics with the troll over and over again which I thought was cute.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
There's really nothing more I can say that hasn't already been said about the troll. It's a unique, bad-ass sculpture designed by a few talented local artists. It's located underneath the George Washington memorial bridge not too far from the downtown area. It's a cool thing to check out but definitely don't plan to spend a lot of time here. You'll see the troll, get your pictures, and bounce. Parking can be a challenge and there are no public restrooms that I'm aware of. Pay your toll to the troll!
