Road Tripping North in Search of at Least a Little Summer | Eater

"A small breakfast spot with its dining room closed and a to-go window that proved ideal for pandemic-era takeout; the author praises the egg sandwiches and especially the buttermilk biscuits with jam, taking the order to a nearby beachside park to eat and enjoy the lake view from the car." - Jenny G. I had a nice breakfast at Frenchies one Friday morning. It’s a small, cozy place, and I got a small table in the corner. The mushroom omelet was a special that sounded good, so I went with that. It was delicious, and packed a lot of mushroom flavor. The bread with jam was also nice and soft. I’m glad I got in early, as I could easily see this place filling up quickly. Service was friendly, and prices seemed fair. I’d definitely go back again for breakfast.

Google
This cute little restaurant is family run and their hearts are put into the food and service. Small charm dining which provides home cooked food when you are away from home. Not for large groups but perfect for smaller intimate meals. The Egyptian beans were amazing, the bread is homemade and the cappuccino was the best I’ve had in a very long time. The chocolate chip cookies were delicious too and I could taste the butter in them. So good! Can’t wait to come back. Love the style of this place.

Google
Cozy, funky space with great service and food! We had heard about Frenchies for years and finally stopped in. It was a great experience all around. I had the American - Chorizo omelette with biscuits and garlic potatoes and my wife had the Egyptian beans with Focaccia. Both dishes were amazing. We will be back and have encouraged others to stop by!

Google
Delicious delicious food. What a fun find! A small environment but cozy, glad we got in when we did. The owner was very welcoming and the food was outstanding We ordered the Egyptian beans and a side of the maple sausage and the American. All of it was delicious. The sausages were very sweet, you could taste the maple. The biscuits and jam were probably the best of what we ordered, but it was all delicious. Can’t wait to come back again!

Google
My Mom and I discovered this amazing little place last year and have been back 5 times (we live 3 hours away). It's our new Go To place when we are in town for a visit. The bread is homemade daily. The Monte Cristo is the BEST I have ever had. My Mom is an amazing cook herself and she raves about this place if that tells you anything. Yes, it small and sometimes busy but it is worth the wait

Ani Daher

Google
Amazing homemade food! Had farm to travel vibes and the cutest location. Very small and cozy like a little hobbit hole. Get there early! Tables are limited. And the wait is long but worth it. They had great vegetarian options. The bread and jam is also fresh made The food was absolutely delicious. We got potatoes, the Egyptian breakfast, the smoked salmon omelet, the tomato omelette, bread and jam, and the pastrami. 10/10 would recommend

Google
Best breakfast I think i’ve ever had. I am very impressed with the fairly extensive menu for such a small place. Service was so speedy. We had the gyro omelet and chorizo biscuits and gravy w/ eggs. Full of flavor, perfect sized portions. I would highly recommend and cannot wait to come back again.

Google
Fun, cozy, beautiful atmosphere along Lake Michigan. Unique and amazing food! Service took a while to get an order placed. Highly recommend the Dirty Chai and the Maple links!

Anne S.

Yelp
This is a really cool place! Beautiful old building. Very small restaurant. Dirty chai was delicious. Food was great. Service was awesome. A fun place for a unique little breakfast ambiance.

Tundraman O.

Yelp
Food was great! Small dining area only a few tables but the food was excellent! Service was from the owner, cook, chief bottle washer! Small business with a cook and the owner doing everything to make our experience great!

Nate B.

Yelp
The food what amazing and beautiful. Definitely coming here again, expectations definitely met

Yelp
This is the cutest atmosphere! The garden seating is so quaint and adorable. The server was friendly, the food was tasty.

Yelp
When I say this place is small., it's an understatement. It's tiny, only expanded during the summer months when it's nice enough to occupy one of the few tables outside. BUT with that being said, it's one of the mdot delicious and underrated spots in traverse city- especially for breakfast. I came early during off season, and was lucky enough to snag a table. I ordered the piperade omelette, and added some heirloom tomatoes. When I tell you this was hands down one of the most delicious- and well executed omelettes I've ever had in my life. Fresh ingredients, soft eggs. Just exactly what you want for breakfast. I also got some of the house made biscuits and jam to take with me.. and dear lord, good thing I only got 1 order. I probably would of ate multiple- by myself. Romos pro tip: if waiting isn't your strong suit, order a togo and walk across the parking lot to the beach overlooking the bay. Makes a perfect way to start your morning!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my second time at frenchies and I can't really understand why this restaurant only has 3.5 stars. The food is delicious, at the end of the day that is the goal in my opinion. The staff has been nothing but kind to me, I can't speak to the experience of the other individuals but I think it's worth coming here. I always get the pastrami with the ginger slaw which is to die for, and I got it to go i got my food in 15 mins. Lovely experience would recommend

Yelp
My wife and I visit Traverse City once a year from the West Coast and Frenchies is a must visit. It's country home style cooking meets fine dining. It is indeed famous.
google avatar

Lindsey B.

Yelp
One of my favorite breakfasts in Tc. The service can be a bit slow at times but trust me it's worth it! They are usually working as fast as they can and when you get their food you know they put love into it

Dave M.

Yelp
Used to like this place. The food here was good quality for awhile but the service has taken a nose dive. Last time I came here I waited in the takeout line just to have an employee glare at me, slap a "no takeout sign" on the window and walk away. They must be doing well enough if they don't need the business I guess.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Charming joint tucked away on a side street, just a block from the bay. Interesting, carefully composed dishes for adventurous folk like me. Solid standards for non-adventurous folks like my wife. Elise was amazing. Friendly and knowledgeable about the cuisine. I ordered the Italian omelette, which was perfectly cooked and fluffy. The side of toasted French bread and raspberry jam was heavenly. I will be back to explore the rest of the menu.

Mj R.

Yelp
Yum, just yum. So cute and the food was excellent. Get there early and don't worry if you don't see activity until the minute they open. They will and you will be happy they did!

Crystal M.

Yelp
Don't be pulled in by the quaint exterior thinking you will have a lovely meal. We waited for 1 hour to get in then waited for 45 minutes for our food. My friend ordered the French toast which came out as toasted bread. No egg or cinnamon. They were out of potatoes, who runs out of potatoes?? My scrambled egg sandwich was dry, couple of eggs and mushrooms. No butter, jam, salt or pepper was offered. We were not offered refills and sat with empty glasses. The restaurant was not busy. They have about 6 tables in the back. A couple of four and two tops. Being this is peak season for the area, one would expect this establishment to be on top of their game. Don't waste your money or time.
google avatar

Sally S.

Yelp
Drove to Frenchies because I was craving their Gyro! Yelp and Google all said they are open until 3pm. Parked and put money in the meter. Found the door locked and the sign state their hours are until 2pm. I called to let them know about the 2 online sites with incorrect hours. (I manage restaurant's social media pages and there are literally 100 places online to post hours! It's hard to get to all of them! But Google and Yelp are the big two.) The gentleman who answered the phone literally interrupted me speaking, angrily saying "I don't have to do anything!" You're right sir. And I don't have to ever spend my money with you
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
Name of the game: limited seating. How do you play? Get there early! It's a TC hotspot, a northern Michigan must try. Opens at 9am on weekdays and 10am Sunday. But I'd recommend getting their a few minutes early, first come first served and no reservations to be made. Frenchies takes the meaning cute and quaint quite literally. 5 small tables that seats about 14 people if that. Very cozy. Service is short and sweet, direct and to the point. Staff is attentive to your needs and knows the menu well. Need a new Instagram post? Each coffee comes with its very own latte art! It was a cold and windy morning when we came, the long wait outside was quickly remedied by their coffee. Their mochas aren't too sweet but rather soft. Like chai lattes? It's got a nice peppery kick to it. Their large cups don't mess around, they are huge! Let's talk about the important part: the food! It was a tough decision but went with the buttermilk biscuits and scrambled eggs. It was a win! Probably one of the best breakfast foods I've tried. Crisp & fluffy biscuits topped with scrambled eggs and a chorizo like sauce. Just add a little bit of pepper, salt and some of the Valentina hot sauce and you can call it perfection. Everything on the menu is great, it's a classy version of your typical breakfast favorites that are mixed and mashed up with Mexican, American and Italian ingredients. Frenchies will have you feelin full, comfy and cozy in no time. I hope you get to experience it!

Alison Y.

Yelp
5 stars for the food 1 star for the service "Frenchie's famous" -- yeah, famous for their bad attitude! The owners, aka the cook and the server, have such bad attitudes you'd think you were eating at Dick's Last Resort. If you're in the service industry, why do you hate people so much? Their food is good, bread is delicious, biscuits even better. But you know what would make it 10/10? Having owners who appreciate your business.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
The only reason this place isn't getting 5 stars is because of the service. The food is incredible. We had the Egyptian breakfast beans and the pastrami sandwich, both out of this world. I will hold my remarks on the service until I go back, everyone has bad days, but good food, is good food!
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
This place deserves higher stars. Food is absolutely insane - the pastrami sandwich of course is my fav but also the biscuits are fantastic. It's super small and cozy inside and it warms up quick from all the cooking and it's awesome. I love that they've never updated or changed, some things are best kept the same!
google avatar

Essam S.

Yelp
I came here while on vacation for my birthday breakfast and it was very tasty. I ordered a cappuccino to start and it was fresh and tasty. I also ordered the scrambled eggs and roasted potatoes and they were perfectly cooked. The place is nice and cozy, the table design was cute, and there's a bear holding your salt and pepper! 10/10 would recommend to everyone
google avatar

Lizzy R.

Yelp
Get the pastrami. Even if you don't like pastrami, it will convert you. We've been going here for 10 years and the quality of the food is just incredible. We always get it to go though because the eating space is limited in size.
google avatar

Abhilash T.

Yelp
This is a place you come to when you're not in a rush. But at the same time, it's like eating in your friend's apartment kitchen so in order to not be rude to those waiting, you courteously eat somewhat quickly. I don't have a ton of experience with huevos rancheros, but of the ten or so that I've had, this was by far the best. Maybe I'm biased because TC is one of my favorite places in Michigan and any place I visit just seems to put me in an amazing mood. But the food here is excellent and it's all pretty much made right in front of you. The French toast is good, not amazing. You might not come here every morning but it's definitely something you should try at least once. Thank you for the amazing food!
google avatar

Miguel F.

Yelp
The food was excellent which is why I gave 2 stars. The service, however, was horrible and kind of ruined the experience. Everything was exceptionally slow even though we were literally the only 2 people there. I was given a completely different breakfast than what I ordered, when I brought it up I was told that the two were basically the same and the offer to correct the situation was never made. After we asked numerous times for refills of coffee and water our glasses were filled to less than half was with old, lukewarm coffee from the bottom of the press. The next thing that came was the, large, bill. Fresh coffee was never brought out. Neither was the water. It's a shame really because the food was awesome. I really couldn't sit through service like that again though.

Yelp
A quaint French breakfast joint off the beaten path in TC. Frenchies has a magical tiny patio that was worth the wait in line to dine. Beautiful garden flowers, cappuccino and French omelettes, a classically trained French chef and owner prepares a perfect breakfast to order. So charming, this restaurant feels like you are dining at your chef friends home.

Lynette S.

Yelp
Great food!! It is not fast food and only good for parties of four or less. Smaller menu but everything was excellent!!
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
Have you ever found something so metaphysically perfect and you don't know why. Go to the Las Fellas Festival in Spain, it's crowded, it's very loud, but it's the perfect festival, why the area is historic, the people are super friendly and the atmosphere is authentic, then there's the but. Frenchies Famous presents the same conundrum. The staff or singular server/hostess/everything else, well she's perfect. Perky, attractive, pleasant and energetic. She's more then amiable, her enthusiasm feels down right familiar. The atmosphere, it's tight, claustrophobic, but yet it takes me back to a favorite breakfast spot in Lyons France. Frenchies plays lite jazz, the kitchens stove hood is the focal point of the restaurant, it's beautiful. Yet about 9 people can experience the chefs talent, and I wouldn't want to be there for that crowd. Yet, I wanna come back for more. Our meal, they most eclectic breakfast menu I have had in a while. The menu Shasuka, Huevos Rancheros, Egyptian Beans, wow. The Egyptian Beans were outstanding as was the Pastrami Hash. My only quibble was the eggs were slightly over cooked, but the taste and all is forgiven. This is the place where you'd wanna read the paper and listen to the music. Very rustic, relaxing and it transports you to another era, another place.

Yelp
Amazing pastrami, fish tacos, and omelets. Don't miss it, if you're in Traverse City.
google avatar

C E.

Yelp
I'm no psychologist, but the owner is obviously suffering from a mental health condition. Tried to order food there 30 minutes before they closed, and he took the order of 2 in our party but refused to take the order of the last 2. We were a party of 4; how are you only going to serve 2 of us? It was seriously the most bizarre encounter I've ever had at a restaurant before. Please proceed to this place with caution. It seems as if poor service is their "thing".
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
So incredibly happy that we stumbled across Frenchies. You honestly wouldn't even know you were walking by it if you didn't know the address beforehand . We walked around back to the small patio and sat at a table with the MOST amazing tablecloth. I just have to mention this because it was my favorite part of the deco, along with being surrounded by a jungle of plants. We went for breakfast and the five of us split their French toast sticks, crepes, and breakfast sandwich. We also ordered potatoes and their biscuits with raspberry jam. We ended up ordering more because they were so good.. the biscuits and gravy are delightful! Thanks to Sparky for making our breakfast so pleasant!

Linda L.

Yelp
We got frenchies american and pastomelet. The biscuit and jam were good, the food was average, and the price was a bit expensive. The place is small and would be hard to accommodate big groups.
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
Frenchies is one of our favorite breakfast places in Traverse City. Why? One reason: the sea salt buttermilk biscuits. Hands down awesome. Get an order for each person at your table. Then order breakfast..... or just keep ordering biscuits (we did that once). This time around we split the chorizo breakfast special with scrambled eggs, chorizo gravy and biscuits. The coffee is strong and tasteful. The outdoor patio is private and quaint. Frenchies is only open from 8-11 am so don't put off your breakfast. It's located at the west side of town and is a good starting point for your day in Traverse City.
google avatar

Stephanie E.

Yelp
Frenchies Famous is our go to breakfast place. Fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh, made to order coffee. Everything is made from scratch. Eat here. You won't regret it.

Michael H.

Yelp
One of the best breakfasts in Michigan, or anywhere else, for that matter. Tiny place but charming and so worth it.
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
It's Mario Batali's favorite breakfast so one HAS to check it out. I will say from the outside it looks dumpy. But I will tell you there's a line to get in. Inside the restaurant only seats 10-12 people amongst 4 tables. They do have a small patio outside, but given this morning was cooler we opted for indoor eating. I had the Frenchies American. Cheesy, Chorizo, scallion scrambled eggs with garlic taters and the most heavenly handmade biscuits and raspberry jam. My husband had the Pastromelet. House roasted pastrami with cheese toast & homemade jam. Also, delish. Their specialty is the Pastrami sandwich. And people came in early to order and then pick up for 11 am. And when they run out. You're outa luck. Overall the place is decent, the waitstaff could not be friendlier and the food is delish! This place is definitely a must on your visit to Traverse City. Make sure you show up early! Whether it's breakfast, brunch or lunch.

Christy S.

Yelp
This little quaint hole in the wall is amazing!! The breakfast menu is perfection! The salmon omelette and the garlic potatoes ware out of the world!!

Bethany B.

Yelp
Definitely a hole in the wall, food for the price was okay, but not great. Slow service and only four tables so get here early if you don't want to wait. Coffee was good.

Eric K.

Yelp
Best food in Northern Michigan. Very good service. Perfect for breakfast or lunch and a very good ambiance
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
Life long TC resident here. Yes folks, the pastrami sammy is good, and the huevos rancheros, if its not cobbled together by the owner (chef). Needless to say they havnt done anything about the decor in an eon. The real reason you dont come here tho is the service. In the many times I come back hoping to give them a chance, I have never once seen this man happy. Prices are pretty poor here too. They shouldve shut this place down after they realized they dont have the heart for it anymore. If your in the mood for the sandwich, good luck with that mission, hopefully they open on time for you or dont shut down an hour early. If you're a fudgie passin through, dont waste your time.
google avatar

April W.

Yelp
I recently moved to Traverse City and heard nothing but good about Frenchies. On the way home from the beach we decided to stop for a Reuben it was 2:35 and the sign said open till 3 but the door was locked. One of the employees opened it and we just asked if they had time to make a Reuben and she said yes with a smile and offered to bring it to the car after I paid $14.31. No sides, no drink just a tiny sandwich on focaccia bread. $14.31. The focaccia was soggy, there was no dressing, and a very small amount of meat. The pastrami was seasoned nicely and if I had been expecting a pastrami sandwich I would not have them go to Falgarelli's for a real Reuben. We got burnt. Definitely won't be going back.
google avatar

Cristopher B.

Yelp
Mine will never be the first, nor the most famous bit of feedback on this place, but I've also not been accused of assaulting a subordinate on national television so if that's helpful to you, then that's great. Let me say this as clearly as possible: Frenchies' Famous makes the best pastrami sandwich I have ever, or ever will have. Made with locally brined and spiced pastrami, with fresh-baked salt bread and homemade honey mustard, Frenchies' makes everything but the cheese on the premises, and it shows. My mouth waters just thinking of this sandwich. A day that I don't eat this sandwich feels like another lost opportunity. I have been here several times and have never ordered anything else, it's so good I can't bear the thought of ordering something else. Here's the downside: Frenchies' is tiny. I mean really tiny. If you come during the cold months, you've only got maybe two, three tables to choose from. If they're full, you're waiting. And the staff isn't particularly happy to see you - it's very Seinfeldian in a way - order your food, enjoy it and get out. And despite all that, it's absolutely, 100% worth it. Go there. Immediately.
google avatar

Lydia A.

Yelp
Best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. Got it with a fried egg--perfect. The foccacia bread, the meat, the mustard--everything perfect. Will probably get another before heading out of Traverse and will definitely be back everytime we're in Traverse. Biscuits and jam were delicious too!!
google avatar

Joma D.

Yelp
Do not waste your time going here. Not what it used to be. We give the server 4 stars for even working there. Unless she is related to the owner she should go work somewhere else. The building is falling apart. No indoor dining, which was fine but you had to yell into the pick up screened window to get seated. The path to the patio in the back is covered in weeds. Blue tooth speaker kept going in and out, ok once or twice but for your entire meal, not cool. Breakfast sandwich was not eater friendly. Each slice of foccacia was almost two inches thick. Coffee was good. $44 with tip for two people to have breakfast was definitely not worth it.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem! The inside area only has seating for about 10 people max. If they are full, walk in, write your name on a slip of paper, put it in line on the paper holder outside, and plop down on one of the benches. Once inside, the staff is attentive and it's so cozy. We sat at the two seater table right by the door. The table itself had unique painting of a dog on it :) I ordered the biscuits and gravy...my advice is don't even think about calories. The biscuits were made from scratch and were phenomenal. The next time we're in TC, we'll be back!

Brenda B.

Yelp
I had the most amazing omelette here. The best of my life. this is a very cute and quaint place but we did not have to wait. All meals are made to order. The coffee and espresso are very tasty.
google avatar

Ana O.

Yelp
Quaint little restaurant in Traverse City. Excellent gyro! Have been back twice!! Limited seating.

Madeline W.

Yelp
First of all we been coming here for years. And my first review is higher than a five star but all that changed today. We drive from California and absolutely used to love Frenchies. The first time we were here the waiter was wonderful and the pastrami sandwich is beyond amazing. I don't even like pastrami and I love those sandwiches. The next time we came the pastrami sandwiches were great but not amazing. Every time I come here order about eight sandwiches to go so that we can put them in our freezer and eat them down the road since we travel most of the year. Well this morning we won the battle and is it and it is really hot inside and outside. There were plenty of places to sit but my husband and I decided that we are going to just get ours to go. We talked to the guy in the kitchen. (I think he was the owner). Yeah yes if we're going to have a sheet and wait told him that we would just rather take our order to go. Without flinching he said "absolutely not we're way too busy we're not doing to go orders." Now I can understand that had I called the order in and he told me over the phone And they didn't do to go orders then I wouldn't have bothered to come down. To wait until I'm standing there to tell me that was unbelievable. What's the difference between ordering two pastrami sandwiches or having them there!? I don't understand! And the way he said it and look on his face made me so angry that we just got up and left. We ended up eating at Slabtown burgers and they were fabulous!
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
Have enjoyed the food here before and was excited to come back this morning. But while patiently waiting in line to open this morning, the staff burst out the side door, yelled at us, waved his hand in my face (while holding my 3 year old daughter) and kicked us out of line and ordered us off the property. The food is excellent, but that is only part of the service, and any place that treats its customers (or anyone) like this deserves to fail - to at least needs to fire some of its staff.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
I called in an order to take out and the person who answered was so put off by my order of a two breakfast sandwiches and a cappuccino with stevia that he said "I can't do this with you right now" and hung up. I used to go there a lot but the bad customer service closes this chapter and I'll look for a new local fave.

Katia P.

Yelp
Cute and cozy. Mushroom and spinach hash was delicious and perfect portion size. Orange juice was fresh and refreshing. Worth the wait!
google avatar

Anna P.

Yelp
Stopped by for breakfast and was extremely disappointed with the service. Very rude man at the checkout window. Food wasn't anything to write home about. Won't be returning.
google avatar

Cynthia F.

Yelp
A hidden gem!!!! Doesn't look like much from the outside but food does not disappoint. The smoked salmon omelet is my go-to and is so unique!! Usually do a side of the potatoes too since the omelet is a la carte and it's a perfect breakfast!
