Where to Find the Best King Cakes in D.C. - Eater DC

"This tidy bakery takes its king cake cues from the French galette des rois, showing off the puff pastry version of king cake instead of the brioche-based king cake. Wow! Everything we ordered was delicious. It’s a small bakery but very nice and clean and the smells of fresh baked breads and pastries hits you as soon as you open the door and makes you smile. Strawberry croissant was really good and the Kouign Amann was perfect. A little too much ham on the Parisian Sandwich but still very good. Highly recommend.

Google
I loved it some of the best pastry I have ever had. The “croissant bagel” breakfast sandwiches were game changing. I tried the Norwegian and pastrami ones. The mini tarts and pastries are lovely. I wish you would open in Los Angeles or even better Ventura County!

Google
Nice little bakery in Bethesda. Their baguettes won awards! We parked free at the garage 1 block away on a Sunday.

Google
The Cro’gel was amazing, great balance of the ingredients. The almond croissant had some filling inside, made it unique and delicious. Definitely need to try!

Rachel Finston

Google
My husband called this “one of the best sandwiches of his life” and he does not take that lightly. The chocolate croissant is genuinely amazing, really fantastic service and a lovely atmosphere.

Google
Best authentic french patisserie/boulangerie in Bethesda, and perhaps the best in the DMV. Recent renovation made it stylish as well. Croissants, pastries, sandwiches, baguettes are all top notch. Not cheap, but solid value.

Google
Great bakery! Our first time at this bakery and the sandwich was pretty good. We would love to go back there. The Cro’Gel Californian sandwich has roasted turkey, avocado, and homemade Oregano aioli mayo. I would love to order this sandwich again and I recommend this sandwich and bakery to my friends and family. They have 6 locations for this bakery in the DMV area - Bathesda, Rockville, Georgetown, McLean, Alexandria, and Cleveland Park, DC

Almond croissant was heavenly and delicious, walnut raisin sourdough was moist and sour, well balanced sourdough! Delicious! Thanks!😋😋😋🙏🙏🙏

Yelp
I was initially going to get the Easter Chicken they had. It has been traveling across the DMV in April 2025 on their IG page. I could tell it would be full of goodies, but when I heard the price, I opted to get the mini pastries instead (for myself). The display they had at the time I visited showed 4 choices: Coffee Eclair, Yuzu Lemon Meringue, Chocolate Éclair, and a Caramel Tart. Of the 4 choices I got, I think the Caramel Tart was the best of the four and this is from someone that is not big on anything caramel in general, but I would get that again, for sure. I also enjoyed the Yuzu Lemon Meringue mini pastry and would actually get that in regular size on a future visit. For those who frequent Fresh Baguette often, they can sign up for their membership, which has two levels I see. I would have gotten it if I visited this place a bunch. Great visit. Although, the only negative I would say is that I wished one of the employees would have shared that there was a cost for the medium paper bag for my boxed item. Lesson learned for next time. It's all good.

Yelp
I walked into fresh baguette this morning for coffee and croissant. I had an amazingly delicious croissant, flaky on the outside, chewy on the inside with a delicious buttery taste. Marvelous! My latte was rich and smooth and creamy. The kouign amman was good but not caramelized on the outside. The pan au raisin had a delicious flavor. Service was excellent, the place was bright and cheery.

Yelp
A very solid option for fresh breads and more! The croissants here are excellent and staff is very quick. This location has more "to go" vibes but there is a place to eat inside the cafe.

Yelp
Everything you love but healthier Imagine you want to eat well but you want to eat healthier for your new year. Well Fresh Baguette, is helping you with your goals. Your beloved crogels (croissant and bagel hybrid) in all the flavors except in a petit size and half the cost. They also have mini version of their croissants. Fresh Baguette for the win, assisting you hit all the goals, to save money and to save calories. Service is always impeccable, they have the friendly and prompt service. Plus, to make things even speedier, you can order delivery to your door or preorder before you pick up your order. This is a town fan favorite, because they give you delicious food and European vibes. All for the price of a pastry or two. If you want delicious pastries and a feeling of traveling overseas for the price of baked good, you have found the perfect venue.

Yelp
Good - breads, croissants, and pastries are always great. New design is good with café seating. Service prompt. Not so good - a/c blowing strong cold air. Not bad in itself. However, no warm smells of baking bread - gives it a sterile environment with no warmth of a fresh bakery.

Yelp
We ordered breakfast delivery from here to Silver Spring and were impressed. Hot coffee, an iced latte, two cro'gel sandwiches, and a Nutella croissant traveled well. Everything was delicious, though we did toast the sandwiches. They do not come toasted but I highly recommend doing so. Loved the cro'gel (croissant in the shape of a bagel) as the sandwich base. I got a caprese that was great. My iced caramel latte was enjoyable. Croissant was good and will try the almond one next time. My friend enjoyed his order. I'm looking forward to ordering again.

Yelp
We stopped by Fresh Baguette on a random Saturday morning to get Cro'gels, a croissant bagel sandwich. It may sound weird, but trust me, it's DELICIOUS! We got the Norwegian (smoked salmon, cucumber, cream cheese, arugula) and the Pesto (tomato, mozzarella, pesto, and arugula). Five stars for both!!! And it turned out to be National Croissant Day, so they had a wheel to spin for prizes and we won a GIANT croissant! Holy cow, this thing was HUGE. What a fun time at Fresh Baguette!

Yelp
The bread, pastries and sandwiches remind us of the baked goods served at an established Paris bakery.

Yelp
I was surprised to find a bakery that prides itself on bread (it's in the name!) that also offers a wide selection of sweet pastries as well, including more labor intensive caneles, croissants, and cakes. I ordered a few items to compare with the other bakeries just down the street. Kouign Amann ($4.50) - The aesthetics of this pastry was absolutely beautiful, with distinct layers tucked under a dome of brown deliciousness. Appearances can be deceiving though. This was a very bready and doughy kouign amann. The number of layers inside was lacking and all the layers that did exist were quite thick and coarse. The kouign amann did not have the delicate buttery, flaky layers I normally associate with this pastry. In addition, there didn't seem to be any sugar laminated in the dough - the interior was not sweet but was bland. All the sugar seemed to be on the exterior, but to Fresh Baguette's credit, the sugar was caramelized perfectly. This is a rather middling kouign amann. Almond Croissant ($4.80) - Similar to the kouign amann, the almond croissant was bready and not flaky. The layering was not great and the pastry was quite puffy. There was a good amount of almond paste inside that was pretty good. It's processed a bit less finely than other places, which I honestly preferred as it gave a nice contrast with the soft layers of the pastry. This almond croissant was not cut in half like what a lot of other places do - instead it was baked with the croissant. I thought the sweetness level and balance of flavors were perfect. I just wish that this was a flaky croissant rather than a bread/croissant hybrid. Parisian Baguette ($3.95) - This baguette had a nicely developed crust and chewy crumb that was almost to the point of being spongy. The flavor was quite well developed. This was a good baguette in general. My recommendations for Fresh Baguette is to avoid the sweets and only get their baguettes. They were warm and freshly baked, and apparently are baked multiple times a day for freshness. For sweet pastries, there are multiple better places just down the street.

Yelp
Tasty Sandwiches & More! My updated review-I've tried more tasty treats. Quiche Lorraine (eggs, swiss cheese & bacon). A creamy texture w/lightly smoked flavor in a flaky buttery crust. Generous size-enough for two. Nutella Croissant (filled w/Nutella hazelnut spread.) Delicious buttery pastry w/tasty chocolate hazelnut flavor. A variety of sandwiches are available including chicken & veggie options. I chose the Traditional Baguette Sandwich (salami, arugula & cornichons on a buttered fresh baguette.) Baguette fresh crusty exterior texture, tender interior & tasty salami. Generous size too. Courteous Customer Service. See Photos!

Yelp
Considering it's been seven years since my last review (and Review of the Day), I figured I should make an update. Yes, prices have gone up, but that's to be expected. Still, it's cheaper here than at a restaurant. Some of the items I love are their plain croissants (heated in my oven then eaten with butter and jam), chocolate chip scones (if you like Levain chocolate chip cookies you will love these), cinnamon rolls, and their baguettes with the seeds on them. I bought a salmon and spinach quiche and while it was pricey, I only ate half with a side salad and chunk of baguette, so it was worth the price. I like that the location is away from the busy part of town. They have 2 or 3 dedicated parking spaces out front, but you can put ten cents in the metered spots across the street. I'm looking forward to getting many more breakfast treats this summer during my break from work.

Yelp
#MonsieurLeGourmand #DGourmet5stars Bonjour les gourmands! Pleased to recommend Fresh Baguette Bethesda. A true reflection of 3 centuries of Franco-American relations. When they opened years ago, young bakers and pastry specialists would come directly from France to pass on the the traditions of Viennese pastry and French bread making to American colleagues. Worked out beautifully and the establishment quickly expanded to Georgetown and Rockville. Staff at Bethesda Avenue are super professional, efficient and courteous. Side note: I grew up in Congo, eating excellent Belgian tradition croissants, pain au chocolat, etc, and Fresh Baguette is ONE of ONLY TWO establishments in all the DMV that meets DCGourmet's croissant standards for: size, buttery consistency, croissant "tearability" and salt to sugar balance. Visit them for all your authentic croissant, quiche, baguette, robust sandwich, tart and macaroon cravings. A variety of French and other European soda and specialty products are available. Coffee selection is impressive, and customizable to fit Vegan milk preferences. Grand plaisir de vous recommander ce bijoux de boulangerie pâtisserie. Bravo à vous!

Nick N.

Yelp
I was ignored and had to wait and demand a staff's attention even though I was just picking up an order I had prepaid. Realize they're busy but a simple acknowledgement would do the trick.

Yelp
I walked in to this clean and welcoming store. It was busy but employees were calm and collected taking orders. The coffee I ordered was fresh and met my expectation. I ordered multilple pastries and the chocolate crossant was amazing. Overall, this store execeed my standard.

Yelp
Very foul odor at the entrance. I was the only customer. Bakery person came from the back with gloves on and didn't take them off for the transaction at the cash register or when I left-which always concerns me. Bought a single chocolate croissant. It was a standard chocolate croissant. Perhaps a little less expensive than other bakeries for the same item. Can't speak to any other bakery items sold there.

Yelp
I love this place. The sandwiches are great and the pastries are delicious. Be sure to try the raspberry tart or the opal noir!!

Yelp
Good sandwiches. . Worth the long wait. Limited seating; plan to order and dine at home.

Yelp
The bread is the best in the area particularly the baguettes (and I've tried them all).
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
A friend brought two items from Fresh Baguette for a recent get-together at our home with 7 guests -- a large classic Quiche Lorraine with Swiss cheese and ham ($69.00/feeds 10) and a large Raspberry Tart, described on the company's website as a soft sable Breton layered with cream and garnished with fresh raspberries ($50.90). Both were fresh, beautifully presented, tasty, and clearly used high-quality ingredients. I would highly recommend both of these for a special occasion but they're quite pricey for everyday. (Prices are from the company's website, Sept 26, 2022). Our friend also brought a delicious loaf of organic sourdough for the hosts -- which, according to the company, was naturally leavened with 36 hours of fermentation and shaped by hand. This was perhaps one of the best loaves of bread that we have ever tasted.

Ellen H.

Yelp
I am now updating my review of this bakery. I believe that there is new management and the Suoerseeded bread is one of my favorites. The problem is that apparently it is also a favorite with many other people, as it is often sold out. Thrilled to have this bakery in Bethesda.

Yelp
I'm glad I don't live closer to this shop (but also sad) because I'd have to seriously hire a personal trainer. The smells alone are worth a trip. The shop is small and laid out a little weird but one taste of anything from this shop and you'll forget any of that. We tried a few of their fresh juice options (passion fruit and pineapple), coffee, mini chocolate croissants, Kouign amanns and a breakfast sandwich. Everything was amazing. The Kouign Amanns are small, but perfectly caramelized and pillowy. The chocolate croissants are flakey, slightly sweet and pair perfectly with a cup of coffee. The breakfast sandwich "Cro'gel sandwich TM pesto" was to die for. The bun is a mix between a bagel and a croissant with everything seasoning on top - YUM! I didn't even get a picture because I devoured it. It comes with a thick slice of mozzarella, tomato, pesto and arugula. This one makes every other breakfast sandwich jealous. Try it and thank me later!

Tom W.

Yelp
Great spot for fresh pastries and baked goods. Croissants are the best we've had in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know what it is about this location, but I just love the hustle and bustle, the sound of conversations in French, and the smell of buttery pastries in the air. I stopped by the Saturday before Mother's Day to pick up some treats for a "high-tea" at home (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The weather was great and there were people going in and out with their pick-up orders (while maintaining social distance of course). We ordered an assortment of small croissants, chocolate croissants, gougeres, and tea cakes. My family loved everything we ordered from here (with the tea cakes always being my personal favorite). The croissants were actually better than I remembered too and I love that you can order smaller sizes so everyone can have a taste. I highly recommend ordering their cakes and pastries for any parties/celebrations since there are plenty of high quality selections for everyone!
google avatar

Charlene C.

Yelp
The Cro'gel TM pesto sandwich was decent.. didn't blow my mind. It was fun to try the croissant dough as a bagel though and that was good. I wished there was more variety for the Cro'gel sandwiches, like a simple egg and cheese. Unfortunately, didn't try anything else, but a lot of the baked goods in the display case looked good. Would come back here again to try their other menu options.
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
Oui, oui, oui. Wonderful French bread and pastries. I have popped in multiple times over the last few years to pick up a baguette, a croissant, and even a sandwich. Service is friendly enough. I think they do most of their baking on the premises, they are Covid compliant.

Emily D.

Yelp
Sweets: The mini tarts are delicious & a great way to figure out what you like. I ordered the chocolate mousse cake it was pretty great. I wish they added fruit and/or a layer of jam to balance out the sweetness of the chocolate. Service: I tried placing an online order for a cake through the phone instead of the website due to it being glitchy. As a result, my card information was verbally shared with the worker. Later that same day I received a notification of my card being used at a totally different location on the other side of town. Do with that information as you will... if you ever need to place an order I'd suggest going in person & paying with cash.

Yelp
A real, honest French bakery with sweets in Bethesda. A friend recommended this place to me forever ago, but when we had to bring over dessert for my sister's birthday, we decided to try it out. We got all kinds of sweets including chocolate eclairs, macaroons, lemon tart, and a bunch of other goodies. Everything was good, but the eclair and the lemon tart stood out as things everyone really loved. The variety of things available and how good they all were was really the most amazing part. We showed up with a big assortment of (admittedly, not cheap) desserts and everyone got to try something different and really enjoyed it. We'll definitely be back to try more things for a special occasion. We'd probably be back sooner if it wasn't for the fact that there are just so many delicious carbs.
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
Wish I could include a photo of my purchases here but they never last long enough! The croissants. I always say I'm going to try something new each time but they call to me... Each pastry is perfect. A feast for the eyes and the tastebuds! A great way to reward yourself

Yelp
Some of the best baguettes and croissants and tarts in the area. I came here a lot when I lived in D.C., but now, I only get to live vicariously through my brother and sister-in-law who are within the delivery radius of Fresh Baguette. So for no reason at all, or someone's birthday, we send over an obscene package of breads, pastries and cakes as a surprise. Perhaps the best part of COVID is knowing that no matter WHEN that surprise delivery happens, someone is DEFINITELY home. They also have contact-less drop-off so I can send them a text to check their front porch the minute the gifts arrive. Gotta find silver linings everywhere this year. Only way to stay positive. Top five items (in no particular order since these are all my kryptonite): Rustic Baguette Chocolate Croissant Ham and Cheese Croissant Raspberry Tart Sourdough (reminded me of home in SF)

Jim C.

Yelp
Love the baguettes, croissants, and croque monsieurs. For a very special treat, try the tarte normande.

Susan S.

Yelp
I love Fresh Baguette and that's why I came to their 10th anniversary. Today, I'm feeling very sorry for the workers. In the midst of the free baguette special, they're hugely understaffed. The owners aren't there, and apparently never go into the stores. Owners, why aren't you at your 10th anniversary celebration? Where is your surge staffing? I hope you're paying your workers time and a half for the celebration.
google avatar

Ada I.

Yelp
I love their croissants, but recently I had a madeleine that tasted like baking soda. A true French bakery would leave the leavening of madeleines to eggs only; even baking powder shouldn't be there. But baking soda? Please!!! Everything else that I get is still yummy though...
google avatar

Molly R.

Yelp
Nothing I can say that hasn't already been said! Delicious pastries and bread that I look forward to having every time I visit my family that lives in Bethesda. I am so glad I do not live near this establishment or I would go to it DAILY. I strongly recommend trying the ham and cheese croissant, macaroons, chocolate croissant, baguettes, or any flavor of eclairs! Bon Appetit!

Gary L.

Yelp
Great service and great food. The best sandwiches need the best bread. All the sandwiches here are fresh and made on the spot. Try the latte too!

The W.

Yelp
started out making authentic, great baguettes. Now basically the same as super market quality baguettes. Sad to taste the change, but de-evolution is real.
google avatar

Alice W.

Yelp
Pretty good. We brought a bunch: Traditional Baguette Sandwich, Crogel Breakfast Sandwich, Cheese Danish, Croissant and Napoleon. All are above average but I will come back for another Baguette Sandwich or a slide of quiche if I happen to drive by the area. Cheese Danish is a little daring. Rich and savory. Little bit of sourness at the end makes it complete. I highly recommend to try it. Croissant was the least impressive one.
google avatar

Yelp
Busy place Tucked snugly in between buildings in new Bethesda, fresh baguette has some seats and open space to make for a comfortable place. Extensive bread selection (which I didn't try) Coffee and scone were good. Nice to know this place is here.

Yelp
The Fresh Baguette. Ooo-la-la!!! Since I was out of bread at home and wanted to try something different, I got the walnut loaf and also a baguette made fresh. I rushed home just so I could spread some butter on that precious baguette. And of course I also ate some walnut bread that very morning. Forget about low carb. Who could resist!? I can't wait to go back and try at all the delicious pastries! FYI, This bakery is tucked away in Bethesda, just across from Euro Motorcars and near the Amazon store. A great location!

Yelp
Hands down the best bread and coffe in Bethesda - Chevy chase area. Simple menu wirh awesome food. Great spot, highly recommend it. Quality is un matched

Yelp
Absolutely amazed at this place. Such a cute little bakery in Bethesda, MD. Would 100% recommend. The customer service was super good. The lady at the cashier was super nice and helpful. The raspberry tart- it was a good amount of raspberries to the amount of sweetness on the tart. It wasn't super sweet which was really nice. Chocolate croissant- super good. Super flaky but also moist on the inside. Very yummy. Almond Croissant- also super shaky but moist on the inside. I really loved the filling too. I don't know what I was expecting the filling to be but it was not that haha The parking is definitely rough because there's only 2 spots for the bakery and all the other spots as you drive further are only for those stores in front of it. There's some street parking before the bakery too.
google avatar

Sondra j.

Yelp
I drove more than 30 miles from my home in Columbia to Bethesda for what I thought would a worthwhile venture. It was not. I love bread...especially baguettes...especially bakers who know what they're doing. What a major let down after all the hype!! The baguette was too doughy inside. The LaMadeleine cake was highly disappointing...tasted like flour and water. Dry an The croissant was hugely puffy and not the least bit inviting ( after the above I'm thinking about trashing it) The sales lady was too preoccupied on her phone to answer any questions ...so simply pointed. Parking was basically non existent Save your gas, time and headache. Go to Giant bakery. You'll get the same for less money!

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Very awesome selections. I loved the Cro'gel bread which is a combination of a bagel and croissant.

David R.

Yelp
I got the organic whole wheat sourdough bread and the organic baguette. Also got the Petit Cro'Gel Sunny Side Up Bacon and the Traditional sandwich. Everything was simply delicious. Service was good. Pricey but it's Bethesda ! First visit and definitely going back!

Yelp
Mixed review on product and services. 1. One rude staff member away from ruining your experience. There appears to be one really bad employee they should have fired approximately 2 years ago. When I entered the store there was a young short female, an older taller female, and a tall male. I, unfortunately was serviced by the older taller female. My personal experience buying multiple items was met with rudeness, no bag to carry multiple purchased items, slow service, eyes being rolled at me, and unprofessional nonverbal communication. It was strange enough to do some research on whether this lady was just off today or a pattern of behavior. And guess what? It appears this lady has been providing the same miserable experience for the last 2 years. Please see the reviews below aggregated for you. "The sales lady was too preoccupied on her phone to answer any questions ...so simply pointed. "(3/24/2021) "asked for a bag & while packing it, it fell apart and the lady just walked away without offering me a new one." (1/13/2021) "Today SAME LADY, makes my latte and makes me stand for close to 5minutes because she refused to hand it to me. " (1/13/2021) "Cashier was rude" 12/2020 "But the clerk lady was in such a bad & sour mood, being so cranky, unkind and unfriendly throughout, ruined my Whole experience. When I asked for a box, she rolled her eyes and made me feel so bad." (4/2020) "Probably one of the worst customer service EVER in Bethesda...the Clerk behind the register was so rude and unfriendly, period! She was on her phone and had no interaction with us what soever, I could not believe my eyes. I asked for the receipt and she looked at me like I was crazy then she ignored me and said "Next" ! for the second time I said "the receipt please" she kept ignoring me and I left...I would say you need to train your staff, educate them about what customer service is all about. would never go back again !" (04/2020) "There was another woman, working the cash register, who was just incredibly rude. She kept cutting us off, cutting her co-worker off, and trying to get us out of there are quickly as possible. " (5/28/2019) "I am so upset by the way I was treated just now by an employee of Fresh Baguette, a young woman....Got a call from a woman with a heavy French accent ..After a few minutes of discussion, she said I can't do this...It was so frustrating and the young woman was so rude, I was stunned. I would like to hear from the store manager to know why they would employ such an inpatient, rude person to work for them." (11/3/2020) " The staff was slow and unfriendly. " 11/26/2019 ***Please share your experience if you also received rude service.*** 2. The pastries were average compared to TATTE nearby. 3. The sandwiches were pretty good and the only thing positive from my second experience here. TOO LONG DIDN'T READ : Go for the sandwich and expect very low standard service.

Yelp
Everything about this place reminds me of Paris. The smells, the music, the croissants bring back memories of walking to the Louvre with a coffee and baguette in hand. Anyhow, I am ashamed to admit that I've tried almost everything and my favorite is the Cro'Gel Norwegian sandwich. The sandwich is the perfect mix of salty with crunch.

Yelp
I almost don't want to write a review so less people will come here! The pastries and bread are FANTASTIC. I love that I can get a fresh baguette for $3.50 that tastes like perfection. The croissants are to die for, I absolutely love here. The only thing I do not necessarily love is the service. We had ordered chais and one of the male workers tried really hard to find us another drink that was somewhat like a chai. He was really nice. There was another woman, working the cash register, who was just incredibly rude. She kept cutting us off, cutting her co-worker off, and trying to get us out of there are quickly as possible. It was not a great situation. BUT, the bread IS amazing.

Yelp
I've been buying from Fresh Bagguete for 3yrs now, mostly from the one in Georgetown DC. I changed jobs and started going to the one in Bethesda... Last week I had a big order and asked for a bag & while packing it, it fell apart and the lady just walked away without offering me a new one. Today SAME LADY, makes my latte and makes me stand for close to 5minutes because she refused to hand it to me. Her colleague had to come and apologize and give me the latte... I'm so pissed off to be getting the same shitty treatment from the same person!

Yelp
Everything taste good and is at mark with European standard. I would have given 5 stars but recently I noticed that the "pumpkin croissant" and " Nutella Croissant" filling are inconsistent and some tend to be almost empty inside/dry. A standard weight measurement should be don't to ensure all Croissant are filled proportionally!
