A Lively Levantine Bar Comes to Town — And More September Openings | Eater DC

"The D.C.-area chain opened its seventh location near Gallery Place, selling baguettes, cro’gel sandwiches (croissant–bagel crossovers), tarts, muffins, cakes, and croissants in playful flavors like passionfruit; the bakery is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day." - Emily Venezky

I was in the area for work and decided to stop into Fresh Baguette for a quick bite beforehand. It is one of those places I genuinely love for something easy, comforting, and consistently good. I ordered their smoked salmon petite croissant bagel sandwich, also known as the crogel, and of course added a seasonal sweet. Last year I loved their mango tropical bûche de Noël, so I was happy to see a mini tropical dessert again. This time it was pineapple and it was fruity, creamy, light, and delicious. My order took a little longer than expected, but the staff handled it beautifully. One team member surprised me with two small treats on the house, which was such a thoughtful gesture and completely made up for the wait. I enjoyed everything in their cozy, seasonal setting. It is a great spot to pause, recharge, and enjoy a moment in the heart of the city. Fresh Baguette continues to deliver both great food and a genuinely pleasant experience.

My visit to Fresh Baguette in Washington, D.C. was a great breakfast experience that perfectly combined quality food with a relaxed atmosphere. The moment I entered, the aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air, giving the café an authentic and inviting feel. The space is bright, clean, and has a simple charm that makes it ideal for enjoying a quiet morning meal or a quick coffee before starting the day. I ordered a sunny-side-up egg sandwich with avocado and homemade oregano aioli, asking for it without bacon or tomato, and it was served exactly as requested. The eggs were perfectly cooked with soft yolks, the avocado fresh, and the aioli added a subtle herby flavor that complemented every bite. I paired it with an Americano, smooth and well balanced. The highlight, however, was the CRO’GEL — a buttery, flaky croissant shaped like a bagel and topped with classic everything seasoning. The perfect blend of French finesse and New York boldness — a Fresh Baguette signature you won’t forget. The staff were polite, attentive, and handled special requests easily. Fresh Baguette is a must-visit for anyone in D.C. looking for fresh, thoughtfully prepared breakfast in a cozy and welcoming setting.

Fresh Baguette was fantastic! The latte and chocolate croissant were amazing, and we also really enjoyed the lemon meringue tart and the turkey BLT sandwich. Everything was fresh and delicious, the café was clean, and the service was excellent. The sandwich was a bit pricier than expected, but the quality was great. Just be sure to ask for your croissant to be warmed — it makes all the difference!

Google
The bakery looked and smelled amazing. It was very clean. It did seem pricier than it should’ve been. They did not offer to warm up the croissants and we were unaware that was an option. The food would’ve tasted much better warmed instead of cold. It wasn’t until after we sat down that we saw them offer it to other patrons.

I was visiting DC from Seattle for a work trip, and really wanted to try a crogel and heard Fresh Baguette was the place to go. I came close to 2 PM on a Saturday and they were out of crogels. I wish I came earlier! I was really bummed and was hoping to try it, but opted to have a baguette sandwich instead. As they were completing sandwich orders, they found one crogel for me. I’m not sure if the crogel was meant for one of the employees to take home but it really made my day and a sweet topping to the end of my DC trip. Huge thank you to the two guys working on Saturday, it was super busy because of the No Kings protest march on a Saturday. The Village crogel sandwich was perfect. So fresh, soft, crispy and the flavors were popping. I’m not sure when I’ll make it out to DC again but definitely a must stop to try their crogels. Highly recommend 10/10!

Google
Stopped here for breakfast. It’s clear the staff is super knowledgeable and professional. They recommended the crogel breakfast sandwich and it was delicious and filling. Well-made latte to go with it. Lots of families stopped by while I was in there. There’s some seating and it’s comfortable.

Google
Old bread and too stale to eat. Would not recommend it. We were not able to eat all of our food because of how stale it was. Rude service and high prices.

Located in a nice place. However they didn’t have a lot of collection when we were there but we did tried pistachios orange tart and the blueberry muffin . Both were great. Staff was nice and good to stop by for some dessert when you are visiting the White House.

Yelp
Such a beautiful place with delicious pastries, breads and beverages! The interior is well lit, clean, spacious and modern. Products (cookies and snacks) from France are for sale in a corner. The front has a big display case with plenty of sandwiches and pastries spaced apart. We got coffee, a butter croissant and an ahi tuna sandwich and hot coffee. The baguette the sandwich was made on was still warm. The tuna was freshly made (not canned) and accompanied by greens (arugula, tomatoes and onions). The coffee was very high quality. The butter croissant was massive, and very buttery, with a great crunch and flakiness. Unfortunately, no pictures of the food (ate it all too quickly). The dining area had plenty of seating, making for a great place for lunch, dinner or a casual coffee outing.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this bakery out for some time and it has great curb appeal. However after trying the California Crogel - I would not come back unless it was to try a pastry. The crogel wasn't toasted warm and was rather cold to eat. Everything was assembled as if I could make it at home. They didn't have any coffee or milk available which didn't make sense when the cafe was light on traffic and during lunch hour. With Tatte and Maman as competitors, I would say Fresh Baguette falls incredibly behind.

Yelp
I've been back 3 times/month since they opened! Glad another location of Fresh Baguette opened in Penn Quarter. Scrumptious croissants and croissant bagel slice "Cro'gel" sandwiches with an everything bagel like seasoning. The sandwich was a bit pricey at $14, there's also a petite smaller size Cro'gel sandwich too. The Fall Autumn Veggie Cro'gel sandwich hit the spot with a fried egg with melted cheese, roasted veggies, aioli, and greens. The flavors blended well and very filling. While the Tarragon Egg Salad Cro'gel sandwich was fun to try, it was a bit tangy with a bold pickle flavor. If you love pickles, go for it! The Pesto/Caprese Cro'gel sandwich is a bit bland. The fluffy Almond Croissant was divine. There's a galore of breads, croissants, sandwiches, and baked goods to choose from. Would be nice to see vegetarian baguette sandwiches added to the menu. Will come back for the Veggie Cro'gel sandwich, hope it stays on the menu!

Yelp
This is a spare storefront in the heart of downtown, with a few tables and doing a brisk takeaway business. They have some interesting sandwiches and some delicious-looking pastries (I was tempted but didn't succumb - perhaps next time.) The Cro'gel (croissant x bagel) is an interesting idea, and the one I had (pastrami and a fried egg, and cream cheese with mustard and cornichons) was tasty enough although I kind of wanted it to be warm, and the cro'gel, while tasty, is *very* greasy and had a tendency to shed shards of pastry everywhere. It's conveniently located near the Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Capitol One Arena, so it was surprisingly busy on a Sunday midday. The prices were what must be the norm for downtown although I was a bit put off by $18 for a sandwich and coffee. Still, I guess that's what the market will bear. I would probably try a baguette next time, or one of the pastries, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here if there's a Pret or something similar nearby for half the price.

Yelp
The last time I had really good baguette was in St. Martin eight years ago. Today (11/14/24) i almost walked passed Fresh Baguette i can never passed a Baguette and thanks goodness I didn't. This Baguette is 10 out of 10 for me! It's flaky/crispy/bit chewy but super soft on the inside and a bit of salt makes this a crave worthy! Add cheese and i had dinner. LOVE it! And I had Quiche Lorraine for lunch the crust was flaky/buttery/light the fillings were stuffed with smoked sausages, the eggs were creamy. It was good but it was missing a bit of salt and pepper for me.

Yelp
Tried this place with Too Good to Go and they had great pastries! Tried a range of baked goods varying from croissant to pan au chocolat -- all great! Also left with a huge baguette -- so aptly named? The guy working was super friendly and fun -- I'm excited to come back and try for lunch/coffee/midday snack

Yelp
Ordered a mocha latte and a chocolate eclair. The eclair was frozen so I couldn't eat it. The mocha latte was fine, but I was up charged for oat milk even though I ordered, and it was made with, regular whole milk. Latte was served in a paper cup, and the eclair in a paper plate, which seemed tacky. Definitely not worth the money paid.

Yelp
Excellent and well priced sandwiches! I had the ham with brie. My iced latte was also delicious. Lots of seating but people do tend to linger. Service was a little slow but there was a line.

Yelp
Great food and pleasant service. This is a really nice upscale bakery right in the heart of everything.. It was right across the street from the Kimpton Monaco, which was really convenient for me.

Yelp
Truly fresh, truly organic, truly delicious! It is sooo nice to have a high-quality offering for quick-bite breakfast, fast-go lunch, and take-home savories created by hand by a truly local business right in the heart of DC's entertainment district. Fresh Baguette's store in Penn Quarter, right by Capital One Arena, The Hotel Monaco, Jaleo and The Portrait Gallery is a great looking, modern, inviting dive into the Old-World style of bread and pastry making (healthier, tastier, more fun!) and you can even practice some French with the friendly staff!

Yelp
Just ordered a coffee and it was good. The smell of the fresh pastries is sooo tempting. Quien and quaint coffee and pastry shop

Yelp
Great ambience & tasty food & coffee. Beautiful view of the Monaco from booths facing this hotel & important addition to the neighborhood. Staff are generally excellent but some unevenly trained, odd re: customer service. One made a sexual comment. Another staff member was rude to my friend who was there for the first time when he politely asked about straws & status of order.

Yelp
I waited 15min for a coffee. It was cold and burned by the time I got it. Tasted cheap and all milk, hardly any coffee. I've been to the location in Alexandria before. It's much better.
