Normally Vibrant During Diwali, Chicago’s South Asian Hub on Devon Avenue Faces Peril - Eater Chicago

"In the 1980s, customers at Fresh Farms would need to make multiple stops, visiting stores like the now-shuttered Jai-Hind Foods or Patel Brothers if they wanted South Asian groceries." - Ashok Selvam

Great community grocery store. You'll find items here that take you back to your country, your childhood. Produce is fresh, food items span from common to unique, helpful employees.

🚫 WARNING: HARASSMENT / NO CUSTOMER SAFETY /OR RESPECT AT THIS STORE 🚫 OWNER NEEDS TO TAKE ACTION. Do NOT come here unless you want to be treated like absolute garbage by a rude, aggressive by a middle age Hispanic staff member. There’s an older Hispanic man with a WHITE MUSTACHE who works here, and he is beyond disrespectful. His attitude is disgusting, and he’s clearly only “helping” customers in hopes of getting tipped. My family and I have lived in the U.S. for 16 years. We used to come to Fresh Farms often because of their halal products and prices. Even though we moved to the suburbs more than 6 years ago, we still come to fresh farm in devon. But this man has completely ruined our experience more than once. He once threw a $1 bill at my mom just because she didn’t tip him for helping carry a bag. Who does that?! That’s not help — that’s harassment. Yesterday was the final straw. I asked for help with a bag of onions because my mom is old and I am a very skinny person who can’t lift much. After he put the items in the car, I smiled and politely said thank you — and this man lost it. He began yelling at me for not giving a tip, started walking up to the car door to make sure I hear him full of rage like he was ready to get physical. I was genuinely scared and had to rush into my car to avoid a possible confrontation. I had already told my mom to stay in the car because we’ve experienced this man’s attitude before. NO customer should feel THREATENED or UNSAFE for simply saying “thank you” instead of handing over cash. This is completely unacceptable, and Fresh Farms should be ashamed to have someone like him on their staff. It reflects horribly on the business. It’s shocking and disgraceful that a store would let someone like this keep working around customers. If you care about being treated with basic human decency, go to World Fresh Market or Patel Brothers instead. They help customers without demanding tips or throwing tantrums. Fresh Farms has officially lost our business forever.

Google
Very disappointed with the customer service here. The person at the fruit juice counter in Fresh Fram was rude and unprofessional. Good products mean nothing if customers are treated poorly. I hope management takes this seriously and improves their service.” “I had a very unpleasant experience at the fruit juice counter . The person serving was extremely rude, showed no basic courtesy, and acted as if serving customers was a burden. When I asked a simple question about the juice, the response was dismissive and unhelpful. Customer service is just as important as product quality, and unfortunately, this staff member failed completely in that area. I hope management addresses this issue, because no customer should feel unwelcome or disrespected when spending their hard-earned money.” And we wants to know that the money even earns from the products which we buy This is not the first time am seeing him the guy don’t even speak proper English but the way with that blurted English his attitude …….,,ufff I hope the management should take care of this

A wide section of vegetables and fruits along with middle eastern and Indian based groceries available. Also it has a wide selection of dry fruits and sweet items. Nice clean and affordable option in Devon

Google
Huge variety of fresh vegetables. Foods from all over the world. Fresh juice bar. It's not truly summer on Devon until you've got a green coconut with a straw stuck in it and your eating chili mango candies from fresh Farms. A jewel of our neighborhood.

Google
If I could give negative star I would. Horrible customer service and the staffs are so rude. Especially the guy on juice counter, he treated my family so badly that makes me feel so mad! Lucky that I come with family, if I were alone… they will know the consequences to disrespect people.

Google
The worst and only disgusting Fresh Farms that I have ever been in. The produce was mediocre to poor quality and the guy running the juice bar was unbelievably rude. Plus it is unsanitary. I have never seen someone dip a cup with their barehands into a bucket of water and toss it on to the leafy vegetables. I wonder how often people get hepatitis A, e.coli or other types of food poisoning from this nasty place.

Awesome. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies. All the desi food items too

Yelp
My go to grocer for fresh fruits and vegetables. When the sign says extra sweet fruits, they mean it =) I love this place.

Yelp
Always well stocked with veggies, meats, cheeses and Euro specialties. Prices are reasonable as well.

Yelp
I love this store! Excellent customer service, very friendly staff, good prices and product selection are some of the things that have been bringing me to Fresh Farms for years and years. They carry many interesting international brands that are hard to find elsewhere and there's a robust selection of organic items all throughout the store. It's very clean and bright and I really appreciate the extra safety precautions they're currently taking in every department. It's really the best place for produce in Chicago, with a wide variety of just about everything that you need to cook any food, no matter how exotic or pedestrian. Fresh Farms is also like several ethnic grocery stores under one roof. I spent a long time here, because I kept thinking of more and more things I needed/wanted, and I knew they'd have it. They have a huge variety of everything. For example, I counted 22 different brands of butter. They also had some damned Camel Milk. Now that's some exotic stuff, at least for this Midwestern boy. Fresh Farms is a fun, interesting place to shop if you love food and culture, and like to explore and learn about how food and culture intersect.

Yelp
They have a lot of products that you typically need for Indian cooking. However, I was disappointed when I got home and noticed that the coriander seeds I bought today had a best before date of 12 January 2021. Its April 17 2021 today, well past the best by date. They have a no return policy because of covid 19 so will not be able to return. Please check best before dates on product labels before buying anything from this store.

Yelp
Check your prices in the stores and then check your receipt after to make sure it is all good. A great variety of items imported in, good produce and other stores around here to try as well

Yelp
Walked over after an early dinner at Uru Swati. Found some cheap blueberries, but there was white fuzz in 3 of the containers so had to pass. The selection compared to the Niles location is logically more Indian versus Niles's European bent. It's a smaller-sized grocery store, got a few items to try. There's also a fresh juice bar. We tried the sugar cane juice with mint and oj ($3 for small), enjoyed. Parking in the area has always been difficult whenever we try to go.
google avatar

Yelp
You'll find a very impressive selection of fresh fruits and vegetables- over half of the store space in fact. I was looking for a few specific items but would have left with much more if I drove here. I did find everything I was looking for, and the staff are really very helpful- thanks to the woman who let me know where to go next time I visit.

Yelp
I want to reach out to the management regarding the misleading packaging date on their Maggie Noodles on shelf...I spoke with the store manager and was extremely disappointed with the product on shelves. Hoping necessary action was taken since the brand was recently on the news for lead contamination in their noodles!!

Yelp
Price Gouging alert. 30$ rice used to sell for 16.99 a month ago. Same for almost everything else

Yelp
This is one of my favorite markets to stop in when I come up to Devon. There is a wide variety of produce, spices, oils, supplements, henna, and frozen ethnic foods to choose from at reasonable prices. I wanted fresh turmeric for my golden milk, and they had a 1-lb bag for $5.99. I got Black Seed oil for $3.99, and a plethora of parathas, poori, and naan (say that fast five times!) for $2-3! There is a deli area and juice/smoothie bar in the front near the registers. They also have organic milk and eggs, and a selection of traditional american grocery items, so this could be a one-stop shop for some.
google avatar

Jeffrey E.

Yelp
My favorite part of the market is the diversity of the customers and products. So many countries are represented. When in Chicago each morning I take a walk to visit kumar from Shri lanka and manages their juice bar. Few organics available but an amazing variety of fruits and vegetables including fresh coconut milk and sugar cane.

Yelp
Visiting Fresh Farms on Devon Avenue transports you to a fascinating and delicious world of South Asian and, especially, Indian, culinary delights. And it's inexpensive. Fresh Farms delivers quantity, quality, and price. It's like the Universe read my mind and turned my food dreams into reality. What brought me here recently was the so-far-fruitless search for Indian Black Spice. None of the spice stores carry it. Rather than give up on a recipe I really wanted to try, I figured Devon Avenue was the place to find this particular spice. Fresh Farms packs a lot of goods into a small space. The aisles are more narrow than you're used to, and the shelves seem like they're packed all the way to the ceiling. (Only some are.) The produce section offers very reasonable prices for some of the standard goods you're used to seeing, but also more rare items. I saw fresh jackfruit for the first time in my life. I still have no idea what to do with it, but if I want to try, I know where to get it. I wandered the spice aisles, looking for some kind of black spice. Finally, I asked a clerk, and he immediately directed me to Indian Black Spice. $1.99, for a 7-ounce bag. Really. All the other spices I looked at seemed to be similarly priced. There are also mass quantities of dried rice, beans, and lentils. I had just purchased red lentils at Mariano's. Next time I will come to Fresh Fields. If you want 10 or 20 pound bags of rice, you will find them in an aisle near the front. There are more varieties of naan available here than I knew existed. And roti. And a few other breads new to me. The freezer section has a wide variety of frozen Indian food. There are selections for omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans. I cannot speak to the meat, seafood, or cheese sections, because I am a vegan. I just skipped merrily past those areas. The only downside you will find here is parking and traffic. Devon Avenue has a well-deserved reputation for heavy traffic. Fresh Farms has a few free parking places behind the store, but only a few. The side streets on either side are permit parking for the first block. I actually parked on Arthur Street, more than a block away. I only had a couple items. If you are carrying heavy bags, this could really be inconvenient. I will definitely visit Fresh Farms again.

Yelp
Within the vegetable market is a stand which offers freshly made smoothies, these are the best smoothies on the North side. Forget Jamba Juice (which is awesome) but expensive, try this for a change. Winter or Summer they are awesome. It's hella hard to get parking, cuz of all the freakin Indian stores here! In the summer you can use the walk-up window which in this case works!. If you like pina colada, there is a Asian chicka who makes them the best, must be made by the Asian girl (Not sure, maybe Chinese or Laotian. I know, big difference) Her Pinas are waiting for alcohol. You can mix flavors, I love Melon and pineapple strawberry, fresh carrot is unbelievably awesome. Now I'm just babbling. I think these smoothies are the best part about Fresh Farms. Other than the cute ethnic cashiers of course.

Rander P.

Yelp
Pretty much the same experience I had at Patel Bros. As you walk into each of these store you are bombarded with the scent of spices, it almost knocks you over. They had things that I had never seen like fresh red and white (no blue) tumeric (picture above), black radishes and fresh dates. From looking at the freezer sections, it seems that you can get just about any mainstream Indian dish to take home and enjoy or pass off as your creation at the next potluck.
google avatar

Osama S.

Yelp
I am crazy about the juice bar at this location. If you need lemonade have Ernasto make it. He is the best juice maker. I tried lemonade from Mariano's, Jewel and Trader Joe's but nothing is like this one at Fresh Farm by Ernesto. Try it you will be hook up too.

Yelp
Management is super rude. I shopped at another Indian store on Devon and realised I forgot to buy mint and cilantro. I saw Fresh Frams on my way home while still driving on Devon and decided to buy just those 2 items from here after parking in their assigned space behind the store. Within less than 10mins the guy vandalised my car with a ridiculous "30min parking only" sticker which wont peel easy. I was literally in and out of the store getting only the 2 things I needed and yet my car got vandalised. Never again will these guys get my buisiness. Super pissed

Prasad G.

Yelp
Sad to see that they're price gouging .. at a time when grocery stores are making good money and the people in their community lre losing their livelihoods. Will never go here again.
google avatar

Emon D.

Yelp
Love this place! Especially, when I'm trying to get some serious Indian grocery shopping done. They have a great variety of produce and personally, I think more than half of this store is allocated for produce. They do have a variety of produce that are required for Indian dishes. They also have a robust spice section and the frozen section is well stocked as well. My only issue with this store would be the lack of parking. Devon ave is never easy when it comes to finding a parking spot, especially with another grocery store almost right next to it. That would be my only issue with this location. If you really care about my opinion, I definitely think this is the better of the two grocery stores.
google avatar

Marta B.

Yelp
I don't shop here too often because the parking is difficult to find. Street parking only. I come here mostly to get fruits and vegetables which are always fresh. Low prices. They have a very impressive selection of spices. As other reviews mentioned aisles are super narrow, which makes it hard to get around the store. They have a juice bar, which i didn't try yet.Wanted to today ,but had to run to the car ( didnt think i would be here this long and wasn't about to get a ticket). It gets crazy busy on weekends and afternoon's. If you are able try to come early on a weekday.
google avatar

Erika G.

Yelp
I call this the House of Weird Produce! They have all the varieties of Indian produce that you may know, and many that you don't. The fresh scent of vegetables when you walk in the place is intoxicating, and it always has a bustling, active vibe - it just feels glorious to hang out here. Great selection of spices and the Indian salty snacks I love. What really kicks is the selection of Indian food as frozen entrees - panneer, dal, samosas. Delicious.
google avatar

Keeka K.

Yelp
Relatively cheap groceries, well-kept store with a wide selection of basics. Great place to buy dry goods (like canned food and baking items) and produce, frozen goods on the other hand are slightly pricier in comparison to other stores on Devon. Candy and snack items are also more expensive than in surrounding stores. Late hours and friendly service though.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I can give you guys 5 stars just for shrimp, all the time fresh and huge. Also they have biggest choice of veggies, fruits, meat and some fish. We go to Fresh farms 2-3 times a month. Also at the exit they have free international newspaper. And if you like wine they have some of my favorite Georgian wine.
google avatar

Louis G.

Yelp
This is a fantastic selection of grocery items, from produce to bakery to meats, dairy, and the usual dry and canned goods. The largest selection of Asian and Middle Eastern ingredients I have seen in the whole Chicago area. Store is popular and very busy, can be impossibly crowded on weekends. Pricing is quite reasonable for what is offered, but expect fresh meats and imported cheeses to be a bit higher than domestics. Lots of parking but you may have to walk a ways to get to the entrance. For the imaginative or ethnic cook, this is a wonderland.
google avatar

Krsna V.

Yelp
The best produce at the best prices. This is the place to go if you want to buy Indian groceries. They have an amazing produce section. I am always amazed by their prices. And they sell my favorite parathas and yogurt. Do not confuse this with "Fresh Farms" on the same street, they both have similar green awnings
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I made the trek to this store for the first time yesterday. It took forever for me to get there (coming from UK Village), but it was well worth the trip. This place is produce galore! And on top of that, they have all of the fun sauces and spices for about 1/3 of the price as Dominick's. I was in heaven! Like other reviewers have mentioned, they have some pretty obscure (for the US) produce. But really, that just makes me want to find new recipes that call for these items, so I can try them out. Anyway, traveling to this store is worth it. On top of Fresh Farms, there are a lot of other great stores and restaurants in this hood, so expect to spend at least half of your day there.

Yelp
I had always wanted to stop in to the shops on Devon, but for some reason felt a little intimidated. So Matthew S. and I went one day and he showed me all things Devon. As he said "I'm going to open up a whole new world to you!" Did he ever! What impressed me about Fresh Farms was the produce section. Holy crap! Where do they get this stuff from?!?! It looks like it just fell off the tree...or vine...or was freshly picked. The strawberries were the freshest that I have ever seen in my life. Also, you can buy smaller portions (ie a pint of strawberries vs. a pound), which is great for someone like me who lives alone. I don't like my produce going bad. The cost was unbelievably cheap! I bought enough produce to last me a week or two along with some other goodies like tea, spice packets, and coconut dates. My entire bill was $18.00. Add some supplemental items that I picked up at other stores and my grocery bill for the week (and then some!) was cut in half. All because of Fresh Farms. I'm a big fan and will probably be making weekly trips to Devon for my groceries.

Yelp
Since Jewel's produce typically blows, I felt it was time to explore our grocery options and traveled North a bit to Fresh Farms on Devon--home of ridiculously low-priced spices and produce, among other treats. Did you know you can buy red peppers for less than $2.99/lb? I didn't either. Not only can you stock up on your typical fruits and veggies (they even have a modest organic section) at Fresh Farms, you can also choose from vegetables I have never seen or heard of before, admire the colorful saris as other patrons squeeze by (and I mean squeeze--this place is tight), find fixins for a traditional Indian meal and take your pick from a vast feta selection at the deli counter, all while listening to perhaps THE most random music ever heard in a grocery store--AC/DC, The Beatles, Latino music and yes, even a few East Indian songs (and that's just one visit to the store). If you're not a vegetarian, you'll probably have to make a stop at another grocery if you're looking to buy meat, but this place is so worth the extra trip and the continuous shopping cart traffic jams. Every time my husband and I shop there, we fill the cart with produce larger and longer-lasting than anything else we've found in the city, and we've only topped the $40 mark once. Truly amazing.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
This is my go-to Indian grocery store on Devon. Other grocery stores might have larger spice collections, but this grocery has the largest fresh produce section in the neighborhood by far. The quality of the produce is high and available for a very affordable price. I also love the juice bar in the back- $4 for a fresh vegetable or sugar cane juice. Great value. The staff is very helpful, and I never have to wait in line long to check out.

Yelp
This is my favorite market on Devon. The first time I came by here, I was at the tail end of a five mile run and very thirsty. I happened to glance into the window and what did I see? A fresh juice bar!!! YUM!!!! I always find something new that I like every time I go. They have many kinds of boxed Indian dishes (for those of us who are lazy and don't like to cook much) and dried pears, which I LOVE! Just recently went there and found the only kind of eggplant that I like (small, super tasty) and fresh lychee. Their produce is great! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Sara V.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years for the best produce selection in the city at the cheapest prices. They have just about every leafy green known to mankind, along with a nice selection of more Indian cooking-specific produce. In addition they have a huge selection of dal, spices, and other Indian grocery items. I buy sandalwood soap and incense every few months or so (although I mix up it up incense-wise due to their...yup...huge selection). They even have the awful (delicious) cream cheese we used to put in omelettes. Also looseleaf English (actually from England not just bearing the moniker) TEA! My mother even stocks up when she visits. If only they sold Pakola and Lion Bars, I'd never shop anywhere else again. They also used to carry normal sized apples (ie small) but lately their apples have gotten simply enormous, while the taste has gone downhill. But I'm placing more blame on America's need for everything to be huge than I am on them. I can usually find one or two that don't look like they could double for a deadly weapon. Also fast checkout and good, friendly service. Best grocery on Devon.

Yelp
Review for the Niles location. OK, maybe it's the "ethnic" in me - but I like this place. In fact, I feel most at home when I am battling it out with a woman twice as old - and with more surliness (and probably testosterone) than a high school linebacker - for the last decent cucumber in the pile. I've caught a few elbows in the rib cage over a handful of okra - but you know what? I've given a few back... In fact, I think all produce sections should feel like you're in the middle of a bazaar - the kind where something frightful can, and usually does go down at any minute. Granted, some of the fruits and veg can be a bit hit or miss - what do you expect for the price? All I know is that here I can find more than just the same lame ten varieties of mealy drek found at say (gasp), a Jewel. Yuk. The fish counter is quite good and offers many varieties of whole fish (which I prefer). I've purchased seafood here several times and have never been disappointed. Are there some less than fresh specimens on offer? Of course. But there are so many choices and if you pick wisely - you'll be safe - and happy. Where else on earth can you get incredibly fresh swordfish for $8 lb???!!!! The meat department is extensive for a store like this and I've been happy with all of my purchases thus far. What I like is that they offer many different cuts of lamb and veal, along with the ground variety - which is a staple in a house like mine, where the words: "no red meat" would literally send shock-waves of terror through its inhabitants. The rest of the store follows suit... I can find all of the middle eastern spices, 300 lb bags of rice and various accoutrement I need to put together my favorite dishes. The bread bakery there is decent and in terms of other items - I love buying random Polish dairy products, not knowing what they are until I get home and crack them open. It's a new game I've developed. To top it all off, there is also a great selection of Eastern European confections. And with names like: "Clumsy Bear," "Spartak" and BEST of all: "Brighton Beach" (a must-try by the way) how in heaven's name can you go wrong? My only gripe so far is: what is UP with the dudes working the deli counter? Most have this kind of, East-Bloc-K-Fed thing going on, which is a might off-putting in and of itself. And asking for a pound of cold cuts seems to only frustrate and inconvenience them to a degree beyond reasonable. One guy (the most K-Fed-esque of the bunch) literally rolled his eyes and walked away from me because I asked for TWO kinds of feta cheese rather than one. Awesome. If you've ever watched Dave Chappelle's Popcopy skit - that's exactly what comes to mind....

Ayesha T.

Yelp
This stores management is childish. We utilized their free parking in the back. And when we returned less than 10 minutes later they vandalized out car with a sticker that doesnt remove easy. Never giving this petty store any business. And they have a guy who stands outside and marks how long your are parked their for and takes tour license plates down. Maybe you should pay your employees to maintain the inside of your filthy store.?

Yelp
I got 5 cucumbers for a dollar. Jasmine green tea for 1.50. Some other stuff. I GOT A BIG BAG OF PRODUCE FOR LESS THAN SEVEN DOLLARS. does more need to be said?

Yelp
If you like eating greens but like saving green even more, 'tis the place to be. And it doesn't have to stop just at greens, almost everything else here is super cheap. Examples? Here you go from my last shopping trip which took 7 grocery bags to fill and cost $46. - 10 lbs rice basmati rice bag: $8.99 - Super soft, super yummy large pitas, almost like naans if you ask me: $0.99 per bag with 5 of the said pitas - Cilantro: 3/$1 as opposed to 1/$1 at Dominicks - Mint: A large bag of fresh mint for $1.29 as opposed to the super trendy looking plastic packaging with 5 mint leaves at Dominicks that's like $3 - $4 - Green onions: $0.25 - Half of a large watermelon: $3.43 - 16 oz of strawberries: $1.99 - Gingeroot: At Dominicks, $1.99/lb, here $0.79/lb I could go on and on but you get the point. I am Indian and love cooking Indian food all the time, and I trek here on most weekends to pick up all the basics even though I have a Dominicks, a Jewel-Osco, a Trader Joes, and a Whole Foods within walking distance of where I live "downtown". Sometimes I pick up stuff like Bitter Melons that I love when my mom makes it but I've never tried making them myself but heck if they cost a grand total of $0.70, then shoot I'll give it a try myself. Beyond cost, stuff here is Fresh. Unlike Jewel Osco, where it seems all the green chilis have started wilting away or the seeds inside have begun to get dark, which makes the chili not spicy, the chillis here are absolutely fresh and don't turn over for a week to 10 days. Yeah, the aisles are kinda narrow, yeah you are gonna run into a large population of Indians hell bent on grading each individual vegetable for minutes on end before they bag them, yeah the stocking boys here know diddly squat about where anything else, yeah the parking situation kinda sucketh...blah, blah, blah. Suck it up people. You are getting the Whole Foods level of choice & quality in vegetables/fruits and Indian groceries galore, which I didn't even go into here, without the Whole Paycheck kinda prices, so just deal with all that and keep piling it into the shopping cart.

Yelp
You can do this. You can. Take the Western "B" bus north from the Western Brown line stop, get off at Devon Avenue. Or take the Western bus north and transfer to the B extension when it ends. A wonderful world awaits at this popular grocery store on Devon Avenue. It has great prices, but the real interest is in the selection. You will find exotic fruits and vegetables, generally stuff used in desi cuisines. You've got curry leaves, guavas, turmeric roots, green leafy vegetables, weird little gourds. Spices are abundant and cheap - though the selection is not as varied as what you'd find at Patel's down the street, prices are comparable and chances are you'll find your needs met. Unlike Patel's, this place stocks some European dry and canned goods and gourmet items. I found several brands of Hungarian paprika. I could almost go on forever, but I'll hit a few highlights instead: dirt cheap vats of extra virgin olive oil. Dirt cheap bulk garlic, ginger, citrus, and chilis - fill up a few bags. Nice variety of quality, cheap yogurts and interesting Eastern European dairy items. Cheap canned goods, super specials on produce, cheap olive and feta bar, in-store juice bar. Cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap. Cheap. Screw Dominick's and make the trip.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
This place would be great if it weren't for all of the Europeans flooding the aisles. You know how much they love their free samples, and Fresh Farms sees fit to set up their stands right near the entrance. I swear one day I'm gonna start bulldozing people out of the way with my cart to get to the deli counter. There's a wide variety of fresh lunchmeat here, and the low prices make it worth dealing with the ignorant people who make up their customer base. I like all the foreign options for good prices, like caramel Kit Kat bars ($.79 each) and Orangina ($1.99 for a liter). Try their guacamole, and their vegetable platter. I bet if I ever actually invited people to my home, those would be huge hits.

Yelp
I live a block away from this place and love shopping here. Place is known for it's selection of fresh vegetables and Indian groceries but very few know about its Greek candies, cookies and deserts' area.

Yelp
Fresh Farms carries many items that I haven't seen anywhere else in Chicago. They sell spices in bulk and carry many kinds of fruit and vegetables that you'll never see at Dominicks and Jewel. If you stop in on a weekday it's not too crowded, but like the rest of Devon it gets very crowded on the weekend. Some items that I buy here are: prepackaged Indian food that I can microwave quickly. They sell it here for much less than at Jewel or Trader Joes Jam--they have a nice selection of 100% fruit ones that won't break the bank Geletin free "jello" it's made from pectin so it's actually vegetarian and it's very tasty and gels nicely. I haven't seen this sold anywhere else...and it's only $.79 a package. This place is definitely worth a trip, especially after you've enjoyed one of the delicious Devon restaurants.

Yelp
Great selection of produce, however the one on Touhy has a much, much. much better selection and a HUGE parking lot. This one really lacked in the deli section and frozen section (which only had indian food). I would much rather travel to the one on Touhy plus it is cleaner.

Yelp
I'm torn between giving a 3 star rating and a 4 star rating. As far as the prices and freshness of their produce section goes I'd say 4 stars. As far as customer service goes a 3 star rating is more appropriate. Yesterday when I stopped in I stood at the deli counter for 3 minutes waiting for the 2 people working behind it to help me when they had no other customers at all besides me. I finally got fed up and walked away without getting the meat I wanted. Today I went back and was waited on in a timely manner by the same man that had ignored me yesterday. As I mentioned I'm liking their produce section. As far as the deli section goes it's modest sized, but it doesn't compare well to Jewel Osco or some other local grocers. In addition to good prices on produce the deli section was priced competitively. I'm sure I'll be back and if my opinion of this store changes substantially over time I'll update my review to reflect that.

Yelp
This place is saving my budget!! ...Bye bye jewel osco! My husband and I love to cook and this is such a great place to buy all the essentials for a do it yourself culinary masterpiece. Produce, fish, cheese, deli meat and spices are all especially better priced here and the convenience and shopping experience are not sacrificed a bit! ...worth checking out.

Yelp
This place has an awesome variety of food. It's like the garden fresh that I go to in the burbs, except in the city! I love how it's the real cultural foodstuffs (aka the things that aren't necessarily in english), and even the customers are pretty polite inside. However, the place is really jam packed for it's size, so it does get a bit crowded. Meanwhile, 2$ for some paneer or mahkahni? Sold!

Yelp
This is a great find! ... This fresh market would rival any upscale store of similar caliber in any far more affluent area of town... Here at Fresh Farms we find the best quality, display and presentation along with very fair pricing. Clean, neat and beaming with all kinds of treasures, aisle by aisle! You will absolutely love this store! I met the owner who happens to be Greek and says business is better now then when they first opened in 1979. It is no wonder because in my eyes, this place is top shelf.... Some of the produce so unusual I have never seen it before.... Amazing place to shop! Great place for bulk nuts, candied fruit, grains, spices and more! Parking may be a challenge but believe me... this place is awesome! A great find on Devon Ave. Shop local ... Keep our money local and working for the betterment of the community. Shop here!

Yelp
Ever been to Calcutta? How about Mumbai? Neither have I. But I have been to Fresh Farms, so I can estimate what it would be like to be in the middle of an Indian traffic jam. This place is packed to the gills with fruits, vegetables, and all sorts of South Asian foodstuffs. Pack it in to a store with 4-foot-wide aisles and a thousand shoppers and you've got an overwhelming experience for a white boy like myself. I especially liked the fact that they have tons of cheap microwavable meals (lake Pav Bhaji), lots of curries and simmers, and a wall full of chutney.

Yelp
fresh farm is very affordable. plus one can call it dry fruits and spices paradise. exotic fruits dragon fruits jackfruit durian etc is a norm here. dont be shy, experiment. you might like it. tons of different kinds of lentils, beans, rice, chickpeas, etc. they often have those on sale, which is a steal. parking and traffic situation is terrible. it's Devon, get used to it. the best time to do your shopping is late evening. the isles are narrow and it's usually crowded here. watch your toes ha ha

Yelp
Yes, 'Fresh' is the magic word. This is THE place to shop at if you want the good stuff. They have a wide variety of fruits and vegetables (some that you don't even know what to do with!). This is also my go-to place for my fix of Indian veggies. Don't miss out on the little section with the packaged dry fruits and nuts. Great rates compared to places like Whole Foods, Jewel and Dominick's. And while you're there, do yourself a favor, and try out the juice bar. You can have any combination of fruits and veggies that you want, and it beats those over-priced health-juices at fancy stores anyday. My ticket to heaven - the sugar cane juice, with a dash of ginger. Try shopping here on weekdays, as weekends tend to get really crowded. And they also have a parking strip behind the store for customers. Knowing how tough it is to find parking on Devon Ave, I sure appreciate it!

Yelp
Amazing! Fresh produce at prices 1/3 to 1/2 of places like Jewel and Dominick's! What a steal. Plenty of variety, great prices, fresh and great tasting produce. Definitely worth dealing with the traffic on Devon ave (the Indian neighborhood) and the grocery cart bumper cars inside the store as people jostle their way through the stocked aisles! A veritable treasure trove of fresh produce! Plus the neighborhood has lots of fun places to eat and explore. Warning - try and not use the restroom there. Somewhat scary! :-)

Yelp
This is the best grocery store in Chicago, a town blessed with many excellent food shopping options. It's basically foodie heaven in here. The fruit and vegetable section is massive and very fresh with ingredients that can be hard to find even at the fancy-pants stores. The fish counter is the best of any Chicago grocery store and far better than H Mart in my opinion. Similarly, the meats offer a really wide selection and they sell all the animal parts here. So if you want offal, you will find it. When it comes to ethnic food from around the world, this is the place. No one aisle of international foods like Mariano's. Here all of the aisles burst with food and ingredients from most places you can think of. I even found yuzu juice for a cocktail I make. I have a particular BBQ sauce that was my favorite when living in Texas and isn't widely available here. Guess what, they have it And that's what makes this foodie heaven... Super smart buyers with amazing taste that offer both variety and a carefully curated collection of food. EDIT: This review is actually for the Niles location.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Any type of produce you could want to make a simple dinner or gourmet meal you can find here...and at a VERY reasonable price! Whole Foods (aka Whole Paycheck) has NOTHING on this place! But that is just the beginning! They also have an incredible selection of fresh fish (so fresh, it's still alive in some cases) and meats, a bakery section, and a regular grocery section. Additionally they carry international food products such as spices, sauces, dips, and packaged goods that you simply cannot find anywhere else! There's also plenty of parking, which is a plus if you are having to cart a ton of food home. It was love at first shop, and I can't wait to go back and indulge my food whims!
