Your One-Day Guide to the Columbia River Gorge - Eater Portland

"If you’re looking for a quick bite before the next adventure, grab a bagel sandwich at Freshies. Freshies boils everything bagels every morning with Pacific Northwest-sourced wheat, and tops them with comfort classics like avocado, pepper bacon, and Alaskan-sourced lox alongside pressed juices." - Katrina Yentch

Google
Smoked salmon bagel – came with tiny bits of salmon mixed into the cream cheese, unlike the photo on their Google menu, which shows slices of salmon on top. It seemed like they just threw in some leftover salmon scraps instead of proper slices. + I didn’t mean to order lox. What I ordered was a smoked salmon, just like in the menu. I told the staff ‘in person’ when I got the food, and she only said it was the smoked salmon bagel.

This place is really delightful! And I loved all the vegetarian and vegan options. The vanilla latte was great too! Outdoor seating. They have it all.

Freshies is a go-to for us each and every time we are in Hood River. We always look forward to a bagel, coffee and fresh juice any time we visit. I dont think we've ever had a visit without at least a brief stop in. Pros: * the jalapeno cheddar bagel is MONEY. Absolutely one of the best Ive ever had. I'm also partial to the salted. * you can't get a better fresh juice for miles around IMHO. * the tunes are always great and turned up. * cool little outdoor area for the sunny days. Cons: * staff are rarely personable or ingratiating, so dont expect high levels of hospitality. * I love the "college dorm common room" vibe, but I can imagine some wouldn't. It's definitely a hodge-podge. * parking lot is extremely limited and has a 15 minute maximum time. Overall, we've always loved the humble character of the place, and the bagels and juice are out-of-this-world! Coffee is fantastic too!

Google
This was a perfect family stop. The New Yorker and veggie breakfast bagels were fresh and tasty, even the plain bagels were tender and moist and my kids loved them. I was glad to have the smoothies as a healthy option. Delicious Americano. The atmosphere was cozy but not too crowded and they even had some games and books for my kids so that we had a very nice breakfast there. I would love to come again. Dog friendly area as well.

Google
Best breakfast bagels in the PNW. So many bagel choices, and they're amazingly fresh. I had the veggie option on a rosemary asiago bagel and added ham and egg. Great way to get veggies into myself first thing in the morning. Next time I have to try the fresh juice bar. I'm not normally a breakfast person, but I'll def make an exception for this place anytime!

Google
My favorite breakfast in Hood River, OR, ever since I started coming here, almost 20 years ago? Their fresh bagels always run out and the staff is always smiling. Our favorite is everything wheat with grateful veggies. With an egg. Must try if you are spending few days in Hood River.

Google
This bagel and juice shop is the Freshiest in town, hence the name. They've got really great bagels here - just shy of being world-class. If the flour had a bit more gluten in it, it would take them over the top. But, good crust and a nice bake make them waaaaay better than the local bread doughnuts you get everywhere else around here. The juice is made from the freshiest ingredients, and is very juicy. You'll like it. So come for the freshiest stuff in town. You won't be sorry.

Google
Great selection of bagel sandwiches and cold pressed juices/smoothies. I would highly recommend the Sunrise which is a toasted bagel with cream cheese, tomato slices, and fresh basil. The juices are freshly pressed when you order them and you can taste the difference. They also have a cool interior plus outdoor seating options.

Yelp
I suppose I'm not a bagel connoisseur, but we're puzzled that this place has under 4* -- it's a must stop for us on road trips heading out of Portland, especially since we'd end up at fast food otherwise. We love their sandwiches like the BEC and the everything avocado add egg. It's a great value for the money.

Yelp
The veggie bagel with bacon! And veggie cream cheese is out of this world! The flavor is so crisp and fresh! I got everything on a gluten-free bagel and it was probably one of the best gluten-free bagels I've ever had. The staff was super friendly I definitely recommend this place, if you need a cute little grab and go breakfast spot! Love the location and the next time I'm in Hood River. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
The rosemary and onion bagels had no flavor. Both legit tasted like a bland, plain frozen bagels. Why bother even having flavored bagels if you don't put any of the seasonings and flavors into them? Texture was dense and lacked good chew. The egg also had no flavor. The tomato felt and tasted frozen. Would be one star review, but giving it two stars because the cream cheese actually had good flavor.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in our entire experience was terrible. Not acknowledged. When asked for their opinion on a bagel pairing I was told "I don't know". I would have gotten more interaction with a brick wall. Spent $46 on two bagel sandwiches and two fresh blended smoothies. Minus the blend, was chewing chunks of ice and kale in my smoothie. Ordered the Cascade Lox, I don't think I've ever tasted such days OLD smoked salmon before. Compared to other reviews and how cute the concept of the place, I was surprised on our TERRIBLE experience. Can definitely tell locals are not the ones keeping their lights on.

Yelp
What a lovely experience i had coming here. It was a Sunday morning and i managed to get in just when the rush ended. i ordered a lox bagel and a coffee and was helped by Ali, who took the time to make lovely conversation with me as she filled my order. we found we had a lot in common and i'm excited to have found a place where i feel welcome to come back to again. the food was delicious without being too heavy, and the coffee was full and well brewed. you'll love this spot, and it'll be made a sure favorite if you're lucky enough to recieve Ali's service!

Yelp
Discovered this place on Halloween when they were giving kids bags of bagels after running out of candy! I thought that was so sweet so I had to come back and check the place out. For context, I'm super picky about bagels because I lived most of my life in NJ where bagels are exceptional. For me a bagel has to be a bit crisp on the outside with a nice chew inside and so good that there is no need to toast them. The bagels here were good and I was happily surprised. I did my standard poppy seed, not toasted, with a veggie schmear. It satisfied my bagel craving! They also make bagel sandwiches, including breakfast sandwiches, and have lox & cream cheese. many types of smoothies and fresh juice, too. I'm not smoothie or juice person, too much sugar for me, but they both seem to be popular. They are open every single day so you can get your bagel fix to satisfy your craving whenever it hits, which is an added bonus.

Yelp
Several years ago this place was great, with a friendly crew and good bagels. Now it's just a dreary place with awful customer service. Staff does not greet, or even acknowledge, customers. Waited at counter for more than 5 minutes just to place an order. There was no line, and several employees standing right before me, yet no one offered to take my order or would even make eye contact.

Yelp
So good so fresh so clean The bagels were delicious and the fresh pressed juices were so healthy and tasty. Health is wealth and you are what you eat. I'm on the way back

Zach A.

Yelp
It's the dank! The staff is nice and attentive and are willing to work with my accommodations

Marlene H.

Yelp
We love their bagels; they are consistently fresh, and delicious. Additionally, their juices are a standout feature, made to order and always fresh. Would recommend this place.

Yelp
Our quick go-to breakfast stop while in hood river. Loved the bagel sandwiches I had on both of my morning here. Coffee was hit or miss. The first day it was good and the second day, not so good. Maybe seek coffee elsewhere and just stick with the bagels for here. I also purchased a bag of 1 day old bagels for $7!

Yelp
Right in the old downtown is the place to get bagels, fresh in the mornings. Not as fresh throughout the day as they sell out. This was just about our usual morning run. First one up runs for the bagels. Good selection and cream cheeses, of different flavors are available. Good portions, also. They are also a coffee shop, so sometimes the first one up sits and has a bagel and a coffee before coming back home. Very nice people, clean facility.

Yelp
Stopped here for a bagel and some juice on our way to bend. We ordered a poppyseed bagel with jalapeño cream cheese and a breakfast bagel. The poppyseed bagel was average and the jalapeño cream cheese was very good. The jalapeño cream cheese really tasted like jalapeños and had a nice spice. The bagel sandwich was just okay nothing too special. We also ordered a classic strawberry banana and orange juice smoothie and a hot dirty chai. The smoothie was just okay it was very liquidy. The hot dirty chai tasted again just okay, it was a little weird because the employee asked if it was hot, as if she didn't remember if she steamed it. It was room temp, she did reheat it but the experience was odd. They have a lot of seating areas and there is a good amount of street parking. I would say this is just an average place and would probably not go out of my way.

Yelp
Hood River local abandoning this bagel shop. Service and food quality has steadily declined and I'm DONE. Their gluten free bagel was a Franz bagel she pulled from the freezer. Customer service was cold and unfriendly and the bagel sucked. Burnt with a thin smear of cream cheese. How could they hand me this bagel with a straight face? I think I paid $7. I threw it in the garbage.

Yelp
Our wedding party ordered a large to go order on the morning of the wedding and everyone was happy with their bagels and juice but we had a missing bagel which we unfortunately didn't have time to remedy.

Yelp
Despite being incredibly understaffed for a holiday morning rush, the staff were friendly and helpful. After waiting 10 minutes in line, it took ~15 minutes to get two bagel egg and cheese sandwiches, a juice, and a cup of hot water for tea. I wasn't so bothered by the wait though as we got there before the rush. I was so so disappointed by the quality of my wheat everything bagel. It was so dry and over baked. I couldn't even finish it. After working at a bagel cafe through college I have high expectations and this fell quite flat. My partner added cream cheese to his Freshie which helped counter the dryness. His juice, the Tangy Tonic, was a hit and he kept raving about it. He would give the experience 4 stars, and he's quite hard to please, so I'm begrudgingly upping this a star to reflect his experience.

Yelp
We got the grateful veggie with cream cheese on a rosemary Asiago bagel and it was amazing! They have freshly squeezed juices and they weren't super sour. We also got the jalapeño cheddar bagel with cream cheese, which wasn't too spicy or salty, it was perfect! The bagels are fresh and the decor is super cute.

Yelp
Bagels were so tasty, but customer service is severely lacking... make sure you stand there and watch for your items... they left our order on the counter without calling it out, then when we asked, they replied "oh it was ready a long time ago". Unfortunately the area doesn't have many options for bagels, so if you want bagels you're limited. Management should do basic customer service refresh.

Yelp
Yummiest bagels in Hood River!! The toasted sesame bagel with maple honey -- so so good!! Their coffee and breakfast sandwiches on bagels are worth your time. And customer service is delightful. Nice seating area and very clean. Will be back!

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Loved this place so much I had to come back the next day during our short visit to Hood River! The freshest and most potent ginger shots I've ever had, plus the best and most fresh juice. The bagels look amazing, will have to indulge in my next visit :)
google avatar

Yelp
Great bagel and smoothie spot! Beautiful plants and comfy setting to enjoy you. Quick service and filling! Very happy to have found this spot to cure a wedding hangover!

Yelp
Love this place! Probably my favorite in Hood River. The bagels are always fresh and delicious. The Californian is my favorite!

Molly R.

Yelp
I got two lox bagels and two juices today from Freshies. Upon entering I was greeted nicely, and although I was confused on what she was asking about my order I checked out and waited for my order. I'm sure it was a miscommunication but they got both ordered incorrect despite asking multiple times and double checking what we wanted. I walked up to the counter to get the order fixed, and was not greeted for a couple of minutes. Keep in mind I'm standing right in front of an employee. She finally asked "do you need something". I then said "yes, I think I may have been confused I wanted like the capers and everything on my lox bagel". Another employee chimed in saying "ya we have like specific types of lox bagels up here". Super passive aggressive and not needed. She then got my order wrong again, and was very blunt. Disappointed by the lack of care, cleanliness, and hospitality seen here. Juice was 8/10, bagels 6/10.

Yelp
$10 bagel sandwiches (2023). I appreciated a veggie bagel sandwich to go. It was fine.

Conner N.

Yelp
Best bagels in Oregon! Nice folks and tasty sandwiches

Yelp
Cool little place to grab some bagels. I love that they season both sides of the bagel. Not a lot of places do that. The bagels were okay. Definitely not what you get at Essa Bagel in NY, but that's a high mark to meet. My personal opinion is the everything bagels should have salt and garlic on them. I got a lox bagel which I enjoyed, except for the fresh dill. The salmon was good and seemed fresh. I also got an everything with smoked salmon spread which I believe also had the dill. It's just overpowering.

Brian S.

Yelp
Love the bagels, don't love the service. I have been going here all the time for years as they are the only ones that open at 0630 before work. Went today and rolled into the lot at 0625. The open sign did not come on at 0630 and I was pressed for time, so I ran to the back up across the street for a cup of jo. Came back to see that they were open and the blonde employee ( who looks she was in the movie Heathers) wrote "dick" on the hood of my frosted vehicle. Now, I thought that was somewhat petty and amusing for 0630. They were no lines of typical brahs and brohs heading for Freshies as pow season is over. What I won't tolerate anymore is this employee making my food with these god awful 2 inch fake nails. I will let the health dept and the owner know this as I don't need any extra smear with my smear. Kapeesh?
google avatar

Russ C.

Yelp
Legit juice and smoothie place that has really good bagel sandwiches as well. It takes a while to get your food but that's not an issue as there are lots of places to sit and relax. It was so good I hit this place up twice in one week while on vacation. The only annoyance was that there are fruit flies that will bug you occasionally. That's the price you pay when you have that much fresh food all around you I guess.
google avatar

Conor G.

Yelp
The food is decent but after coming several times the service is routinely poor and despite an empty shop the wait time for food is very upsetting

Arnold G.

Yelp
Abominbale service from this place in the last few years. The owners is a weirdo who only hires teenage girls thusly leading to incompetence in the workplace and an ambience of uncaring flatness. Yesterday, my good friend purchased what should have been a day old banana bread and after one bite was violently Ill throwing up their food they had eaten from there. The banana bread in question was unquestionably rotten after inspection. This would be the worst of it if the owner had not lied to our faces and told us that the banana bread was made fresh every day but then essentially accused a young lady of being in charge of banana bread, this teenager was aghast and terrified. He threw this woman under the bus rather than apaologize and tell us he would check the remaining banana bread for issues. Weak soul and weak heart, unable to accept blame as the owner of the establiment. This place used to be the spot in town to grab a bite, now you would be lucky to come out safe. So Matt I'm disappointed in the way the business has gone since you lost your managers. I hope you do better.

Yelp
Yummy bagels. The everything bagel was LOADED with everything seasoning, so delicious. Our child is allergic to dairy, egg, nuts and he safely ate the pretzel.

Amy C.

Yelp
Wanted a small morning snack. Was hoping to get a half lox bagel but was told I have to buy a full one. So I ordered cream cheese, salmon, tomato, onion and caper. To go. Toasted. $9. Waited over 10 minutes with not many customers there. Left with a cold bagel with no tomato. Was thinking I could have went to Safeway got all the stuff to make my own in half the time. Disappointing. And EXTREMELY expensive

Yelp
Best place for bagels in Hood River. Really great juice bar too. They serve Stoked coffee which is a local roaster, very good. Also a good place to take kids too since there is a little play area with toys and a play kitchen. Fun atmosphere.
google avatar

Carissa B.

Yelp
The lox was dynamite! We called over the phone and our order was wrong - but nonetheless - it was delicious!!
google avatar

Edward K.

Yelp
This is perhaps the first eatery I ever patronized in Hood River that I can remember...probably around 2009 when I was visiting friends. Now I Iive in Hood River and I go to Freshies every so often. They're the only bagel shop in town and they're good at what they do...which is making bagles. In all these years I've never had a bad experience. The food is always delicious, there's a large selection of bagels, the atmosphere is comfortable, and they serve Stoked coffee, which is tasty. And, unlike the baristas down at Stoked, the employees at Freshies are a lot more friendly and less angsty.

Jeshua M.

Yelp
Bagel was decent but the server Samantha was standoffs and rude. I feel especially at 7am in the morning its important to at least have a bare minimum of kindness. Samantha is a sour personality to swallow first thing in the morning
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
Amazing place to grab great healthy bite. Fresh juices, everyone can find something on this menu. Vegans and meat eaters alike. Best Bagel and Lox for miles and miles. Friendly and great staff. Will make it a perfect place to stop on family road trips
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
Wow I really miss this place after moving out of the area. I haven't found a bagel place that has a good veggie option. The juices are also a great addition to your breakfast. Just wanna drop it and leave my 5 stars to a wonderful breakfast spot.
google avatar

Izzy L.

Yelp
While sometimes the woman working here aren't overly friendly this place does have the best bagels in the gorge and reasonable prices.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
The bagel menu is decent. Last year my husband and I purchased a carrot ginger type of juice it came room temperature and was not my taste preference. But, perhaps this is how it is meant to be served? Regardless we have returned for the bagel menu. However the service this time wasn't so bright and cheery, but we realize this is hard with masks on. I would come back to try their lunch bagel sandwiches.
google avatar

Kate H.

Yelp
I am pleased to announce that after my review the axed the roasted tomatoes, so I can give them an additional start for having some good sense. ;) Still not close to NYC bagels, but for a west coast bagel shop, they are doing a fine job.

Kate L.

Yelp
My previous review mentioned that Freshies bagels had taken on an over-baked quality earlier this year. While their plain bagels can sometimes still be a bit on the dark side, I am happy to report that their bagels are generally back to their previous quality. I heartily recommend them.

Gayle L.

Yelp
Delicious homemade bagels! We ordered egg sandwiches with their veggie sausage, which was a treat. And their strawberry cream cheese is also tasty. Green Monster smoothie is a tasty treat to wash down the bagels. Good spot for kids and dogs!
google avatar

Marissa L.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way to and from while traveling from Boise to Portland. Awesome little spot. They have a ton of options from the plain jane bagel and cream cheese to delicious bagel sandwiches. I got the veggie bagel and an egg and cheese bagel, both of which were delightful and a little bit messy. I am not sure if this is because I was in the wilderness for 4 days or if it is legit, but the coffee here is out of this world. Seriously - so. good. Overall this place is super easy to stop and grab something that is not only quick but also healthy and delicious. The shop is close to the freeway and is next door to an impressive dispensary if you are into that kinda thing. Definitely my go-to stop in Hood River from now on!

Blake L.

Yelp
Omg best bagels ever! Everyone that works here is so nice! I've had the veggie bagel 3 times and it's always consistently amazing. I'll keep coming back!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
The smoked salmon lox bagel looked SO good, so I had to come here before hitting the slopes. Got it on an everything bagel (per usual) and it was fine.. but pretty bland. Weirdly. I had to add some salt, which was really strange, as you'd think the smoked salmon & capers would give it enough flavor (not to mention the everything seasoning). Oh well. We came & tried.
google avatar

Betsy W.

Yelp
I went in today, on our way out for family vacation, and grabbed a couple of coconut--almond-cranberry-oat bars with multiple other ingredients. I asked if it contained any nuts besides almonds and peanuts, like walnuts, she pointed to the tag and said "these are all the ingredients". I read them over... Seemed delish and harmless, until my throat started to itch... It was FULL of WALNUTS! I specifically asked if it contained walnuts and was brushed off with a hand written list the DIDN'T list WALNUTS. Also, the oil was rancid.. Gross. Hey! Thanks! Glad I didn't die! You owe me $5 and a sincere apology. Totally and completely unprofessional and could be deadly to someone who has anaphylactic responses to WALNUTS.

Karen K.

Yelp
I had Freshies cater a brunch for 50. I worked with Erin and can't say enough how pleased I was with the food. Erin helped me order just the right amount and coordinated with me by phone, checking in ahead of time to confirm delivery. We ordered bagels, yogurt parfaits, specialty fruit juices and the fruit, meat, and lox platters. All were delicious and delivered promptly the morning of the event. We had lots of positive feedback from our guests as well. I felt the prices were appropriate for the food that was provided. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Alicia W.

Yelp
Owners seemed cool and ready to please customers. Staff not so much, heard them bitching about a tip... really? That will earn you nothing. I've worked in the restaurant industry for year's, I get it but don't be vocal about it. Food was okay but would have preffered chewier bagles personally. Potential for a great business is there!
