"At this Glisan Street bakery, containers of house-made sauerkraut and curry ketchup are available for purchase next to the pastry case, which holds baked goods like Berliners, almond cakes, and all manner of laminated pastries. Behind the counter, a rustic cabinet displays pretzels and bread. Owner Edgar Loesch pulls inspiration from his Bavarian background, as well as training as a baker and pastry chef in northern California. Those looking for a hearty start to the day should reach for a pretzel bun sandwich, which can be ordered with bacon, Bierwurst, or grilled ham." - Janey Wong, Nathan Williams

Google
Fressen has an amazing atmosphere. The coffee came out quickly and tasted great. The cappuccino art was not very pretty, but the it did taste great, and to me that’s what matters. My wife got an iced latte with hazelnut flavor added, and that was seriously delicious. We split a breakfast bagel sandwich, which comes on a pretzel bagel. The honey mustard made the sandwich a little too sweet to me, but definitely a delicious sandwich. They also have a lot of breads and pastries which all look amazing

Got the half loaf of Vollkornbrot Bread for home. It was very rich in flavor(nutty flavour) and dense as 1-2 slice will make anyone's stomach full. While at the store in the early morning, I ordered a cappuccino and some soft almond chocolate muffin(although I don't know the exact name of it). I also ordered the chocolate rum balls which are not in this set of pictures.

Google
For coffee it is just okay. I came here pre COVID and I remember it being one of the best lattes, but now when I went back it was not up to parr, especially for PDX. The pastry was good but others in the area are just as good (maybe better but I'd have to try more) but with better coffee. I'm hoping I'm wrong and maybe it was just an off day. I will try again and update accordingly.

Google
I love Fressen. I think their pastry's and pretzel sandwiches are so delicious. I enjoy working there a bit while savoring my order. It's a welcoming and lovely place. I often get the croissants, fransbrots, and fruit pastries, but everything has been great.

Google
I love German bakeries and wanted to try this for a very long time. They had good options for baked desserts and bread but the problem was there was too little of everything, and I went there at 10 am. The caramel apple cider was absolutely delicious. The pretzel itself was kinda dry and small, but the chive butter and Emmental cheese with it were nice. The service took really long, and it literally involved spreading some butter and placing slices of cheese on the pretzel. However, I would visit again if I happen to be in the area in the future.

Google
This was my first time in. My breakfast was beyond burned. The bread and brie were too salty together as well. However, my coffee and the pastry I bought for later were good. If I come back, I think I'll skip the sandwiches.

Google
Excellent, authentic German-style baked goods. Everything I've tried takes me back to visits to Germany years ago. My favorite of their breads so far is the excellent country-style rye. My favorite pastry so far is the Eierschecke -- a lovely custard-filled almondy cake. My nieces love the pretzels and cake with berries. Service is quick and friendly and everything is made on the premises.

Google
One of the best bakeries in Portland serving a great selection of German pastries and breads. You will find a good selection of pasteries, cakes and breads with a variety of drinks. It was hard to select a few items and I picked a Danish, Nutella swirl, Franzbrot (cinnamon roll) and two salted pretzels. The Danish and the Nutella Swirl were light and flaky and not really sweet. The Franzbrot, a German Cinnamon Roll, had good taste and was not too sweet. The pretzels taste better when you warm them up. A brunch menu includes quiche, toasts, bagel and pretzel sandwiches. Parking is limited to the side streets. Located on NE Glisan and 71st street. Credit cards are accepted. A great place to find German pastries, cakes, and breads with friendly service and a brunch menu.

Yelp
Strange little place....but WOW.....best. pretzels on west coast and Franzbrot which we had never heard of .....out of this world We will return,we will return

Yelp
Nice little bakery. I discovered it when it hosted a fundraiser where a local folksinger, Ed Haynes, was performing. We had coffee and a pastry it was very good. The bread looked wonderful. I would have bought some but I bake a bit and I have a freezer full of pretty good bread already. The staff were helpful and very pleasant. I would stop there again. I get to that Portland neighborhood a couple of times each year.

Yelp
Fressen is a pleasant roadtrip stop on a long drive. It has a comfortable cozy atmosphere with that warm incandescent color of lighting within. The staff is very friendly and agreeable. They made my caramel breve exactly the way I like it. I found it to be smooth and creamy, not overly strong. The breakfast bagel was nicely done. Toasted and hot, it came with a fried egg, bacon, cream cheese and a sweet dijon. The caraway was unmistakable as were all the ingredients now that I think about it. They were very generous with the ingredients. This breakfast bagel is very satisfying. Had to have the carrot cake as well. This was an extremely moist affair with a maple frosting, walnuts within and sliced almond on top. This was a very fresh carrot cake, I can see why they sell out so fast.

Yelp
Came for the bfast sando and ended up in also getting another 5 or so pastries. The sando was good and not too heavy. The pastries though were all very good especially that Nutella roll thing. Didn't have anything I wouldn't have again there only wished I lived nearby. It's self service (order at front, they bring to your number, you bus) and some of the tables/seating were dirty needing a wipe down so wish they were on that better as we got there at 9am so a bit surprising but everything else is good. A decent amount of seating for a cafe both indoors and out.

Ilka P.

Yelp
Delightful bakery that speaks my heritage DNA. Food was delicious and well made. Coffee is hot and smooth. Service is friendly and helpful. Ambiance was comfortable, seemingly a locals favorite hangout. Five stars because I can't find anything wrong with it. It met our needs for a stop off on a trip north, great coffee and breakfast bagel. I won't embarrass myself naming what we took to go. Worth the detour.

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I have no German knowledge or heritage, therefore, I have no clue as to how "authentic" this place may be, but it sure as hell is a great place if I do say so myself. The kitchen was closed on a weekday morning (messed up gas line) when we got there, but we were able to order an assortment of pastries: Bavarian croissant, almond brioche, a franzbot, Nutella swirl, spinach and feta danish, and 2 pretzels. And Everything was damn delicious, let me tell you. We ordered their special drink, a pistachio latte, and this was the only "let down" from the hodge podge we ordered: we couldn't taste any pistachio and the beans tasted burnt. Def recommend a stop here guys!!

John D.

Yelp
Cool place to visit and enjoy incredible lunch and bakery desserts. Had the fransbrot or something and it was insane, think cinnabon for adults, carmalized edges do it. Also had frankfurterkranz which is like a pound cake with awesomeness inside.

Ploy N.

Yelp
Always see them at the PSU Farmers Market on Saturdays so wanted to checkout their brick and moertar spot. Super cute and cozy place with plenty of seatings inside and outside. It does have that Bavarian/German beer hall energy to it which was very fun! I have been meaning to try out their pastries but unfortunately the ones I had my eyes were out so alas, guess I'll just have to come back. Instead, we tried a Breakfast Sandwich and a Pretzel Sandwich. The breakfast sandwich we got was a fun take on the usual, using pretzel bun, bratwurst, and curry sauce! It was freshly made, egg was well-cooked, and the cheese was gooey while being crispy on the edges; big fan! The pretzel sandwich was also very delicious. It's served with a larger pretzel and filled with fresh greens, brie, and ham. Love the mustardy dressing for the greens which was very flavorful and refreshing. We also got drip coffee to go with the meal and it's bottomless and self-serve. Staffs were all super friendly and nice. We bought a few bread from them close to closing and they gave us a bunch of free goodies! They're a bit far away for us but we totally would like to be a regular here. They do close pretty early and their pastries do run especially on the weekends so do plan accordingly or try to catch them at the market.

Yelp
Pretzel sandwiches And fruit danishes with real peach purée really what more do you need to know?

Kim B.

Yelp
This bakery has delicious baked goods all made on premises. Try the franzbrot, the best cinnamon bun ever, or the Bavarian croissant, Ba-very good!!! Relax for breakfast or brunch or come for the Biergarten in the evening. Service is five star!!

Karen S.

Yelp
Great German Pretzels and Baked Goods! Order at the counter and eat outside or inside!

Jadyn N.

Yelp
The food was ok. I came here thinking the pretzel was going to be good, but it was ok. We order a number of things, but the stand out was the Gretel special pretty good with the brie and jam on a croissant. The almond chocolate croissant was a little to sweet for me. The breakfast pretzel was ok the egg was a little burn.

Liv C.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! Fressen is the coziest spot for a quick and easy brunch on a drizzly Portland day, and the pretzel bun breakfast sandwiches and decadent cream-filled Berliner donuts will make you forget all about the gloomy weather! The prices are also very reasonable and there is a good amount of seating inside. Definitely get there early if you're trying to sample some of the more popular pastries or breads...they sell out quickly and the line is often out the door, especially on the weekends. Can't wait to go back soon!

Hana H.

Yelp
I stopped by here to pick up some treats on a special day, the variety of delicious breads and baked goods is reason to make visiting here a more regular occurrence!

Maurialee B.

Yelp
Everything is delicious. Coffee really good and pastries out of this world. Bread is devine

Rachel C.

Yelp
Excellent European pastry case you'll no doubt drool over! Don't get there too late if you want to pick from it, the goodies go fast. Their signature pretzel bread makes for a delicious and sturdy sandwich and the eggs were cooked nicely on both our breakfast sandwiches. Counter service is friendly and helpful with decision making, which is so difficult when you want to take the entire pastry case home. Cute and casual inside with a spacious, covered patio. Street parking only.

Yelp
I'm so happy Fressen Artisan Bakery is within walking distance in my new neighborhood in NE Portland. This coffee shop and bakery is an anchor business in the up-and-coming North Montavilla area, offering spacious indoor and outdoor seating options perfect for nearly every kind of gathering you have in mind. Fressen offers everything from freshly baked soft pretzels, buns and rolls, to gloriously fragrant loaves of bread. Arrive early to have the best selection because their pastry case will likely be empty by noon. I've enjoyed everything I've tried, especially their sausage and egg breakfast sandwich with a pretzel bun. Fressen is mostly a morning hangout as they generally close by 1 PM, so do yourself a favor and arrive early for the best experience.

Hallie P.

Yelp
Love this place. Croissants and the Kalamata olive bread are the best! Have to try more from the menu but I get those two things every time cuz they are so good

Alex M.

Yelp
I discovered Fressen at the Portland State University Saturday farmers' market when I was trying to navigate my way through the stalls and was blocked by a massive line. Curious to see what everyone was waiting for, I spotted a pristine display case with rustic loaves on one side and Bavarian-style pastries on the other. I joined the back of the line and used the waiting time to decide what I wanted to order. By the time I got to the front, I decided to get the almond cake. This turned out to be an excellent choice; the cake was spongy with a delicate crust, and it tasted subtly sweet with an unquestionable almond flavor. This was definitely a special treat, and I now understand why Fressen is so popular!

BJ D.

Yelp
This is one of Portland's best hidden gems. This is a phenomenal place to get brunch or breakfast sweets. They have a rotating array of some of the best handmade treats in town. I honestly think the Bacon, Cucumber, & Blue pretzel sandwich is one of Portland's best sandwiches.

Marc A.

Yelp
My sister in law is German and we found this little gem when we were in Portland. This isn't going to be a long review as we just stopped in to see their selection and have a quick bite to eat. The pastry options were plentiful and looked delicious! Can't take them all, but I would have said YES to all of them. I opted for the German sausage breakfast sandwich which was full of flavor, especially with the Gruyère cheese, German sausage and curry ketchup. Ambiance: 9/10 Service: 9/10 Bathrooms: 8/10 Food: 9/10 Cleanliness: 9/10 Value: 9/10 Will I Return? Ya!

Mary V.

Yelp
I become obsessed as soon as I had my first bite of the breakfast sandwich. So much crunch and freshness! Simple ingredients and unique preparation (for the US at least). Their decaf latte was incredible, as was the German almond cake. Took home a loaf of the Franconian rye...amazing! Like transporting yourself straight to Germany. I want to come back all the time and make my way through sampling each pastry... yummmm!!

A M.

Yelp
Met a friend for brunch here in the spirit of recently learning that I have a shred of German ancestry. Walking in, you're met by a smell so enticing and display cases so inviting I was salivating once I walked in. Every single thing I have had there or taken home to hubs was the BOMB!! I had a special waffle with a rye batter topped with strawberry rhubarb compote and hazelnuts omggggg!! The beesting pastry was incredible. Made with recipes that go back centuries, I wish I'd checked this place out sooner!

Janice G.

Yelp
Cannot begin to describe how this sandwich hit the spot. Came here by chance when Futura coffee didn't have food left and they suggested this bakery. Didn't have much expectation since it was my first time in the area. Maybe I was just really hungry but wow, this sandwich is so good

Azi N.

Yelp
First time dining in and their food is so delicious. Had their breakfast sandwiches and some pastry. Their house coffee is also delicious very smooth and nutty.

Sofia R.

Yelp
The customer was amazing!!! They are doing what they can! I asked for a recommendation and they suggested their favorite. It was good, I wouldn't go and get another, but because I don't like mustard. I would go try another sandwich! The Coffee was delicious!!! Try the Coffee!!!:) I went at a good time, in the afternoon. There's seating inside and outside!! It was not busy when I got there but it's a very popular place on the weekends!! More stuff on the weekends ! Overall good place !!

Bryna S.

Yelp
Best pastries and coffee in town. If you are on a diet beware. It's really hard for me not to just go there every day.

Justin C.

Yelp
Their bread is great but I'm not knocking off 2 stars for the fact that they never actually pick up the phone. I have called them, I'm not exaggerating here, 25 times over the course of 6 months and not once have they picked up the phone. When I asked the person at the counter what was going on they said oh yeah our phone system has been acting up. That was 3 months ago. Still can't get somebody to pick up the phone. When you are coming in for a specific kind of bread It would be very helpful to be able to ask if they have any of that bread in stock ***before you show up!*** This seems like a basic thing that businesses do -- "yes we have that in stock" -- and yet this business is not able to do it.

Ken P.

Yelp
I get spoiled with all the great bakery and coffee shops in Portland, but Fressen really stands out! This morning I had a latte and a "Gretel" (croissant with Brie and marionberry jam). Wow! Staff was friendly, service was quick, and the quality of the food was superior. The atmosphere was inviting. There was nothing not to love.

Mariko K.

Yelp
A sampled a few items: Croissants - 4 stars, it was kind of savory for me, but still good Brioche - 3 stars, i don't care much for it Cinnamon roll - 5 stars, amazing!

E L.

Yelp
Baked good are amazing, Super SLOW service. Took 10 minutes to get a cup of Americano. Just order the baked good.

Alden W.

Yelp
A morning well spent. Something savory, something sweet and good coffee on top a little bit of everything you need to start your day

Udayan K.

Yelp
The place has a rustic/oldie type feel to it and feels spacious with the tall ceiling and seating outside in addition to inside. There are big wooden tables with long cushioned benches on one side and it was filled to capacity on a Saturday morning. I'm not too familiar with gourmet breads or German stuff, but my eyes darted to the Bienenstich which I did know of, and the sticky goodness lived up to the expectations. I could keep coming back just for that, but the other sweet stuff looked inviting too, and my wife loved her veggie bagel as well. The pretzel's must be good too, and same for the gourmet breads (while I'm learning to appreciate that). The espresso was great as well.

Joshua W.

Yelp
What a lovely place to get coffee and a pastry on the weekend, especially when it's cold and rainy. The inside seating was limited but we had found space on the patio. The place was a former garage, which adds to the character. We tried the Franzenbrot - essentially a crisp cinnamon roll - and the bread pudding, which would have been better warmed up rather than cold. I had an Americano of good quality. Be sure to ask for cream and sugar when you order!

Davvy L.

Yelp
Pretzel's soft like pillow. Thought I was in a dream when I bite into it. Gone in 30 seconds...

Debbie B.

Yelp
We go here for brunch at least once a week. Really good coffee, lattes, chai, avocado toast, and pastries. Also German pancakes. Our granddaughters love the freshly made pretzels. Friendly service and laid-back atmosphere. Books for the kiddies to read while waiting are available. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. You order at the counter and then they bring your food and drinks to you. Outdoor seating is available too.

Andrew A.

Yelp
I'm not a fan of soup bowl-sized espresso drinks, but if you're going to share then this is the way to go. Great value here. The almond brioche was very good, very moist. Good sized too. The homemade Vollkonbrot bread makes the Egg & Avocado Toast, I became a fan of this bread at Roman Candle, be sure to get a loaf to go. Unfortunately, the portion is very small, but it does come with a decent side salad. Mmm, I'd pass on this and go for one of their authentic specialities. Speaking of which, the Ementhal Pretzel with chive butter is a recommend. Gooey goodness. However, it took a long time to heat. I prefer their version of spinach and feta in philo over the classic Greek variety. The spinach isn't as "raw" and the dough isn't as flakey so it doesn't crumble everywhere. Overall, prices are LOWER than at comparable places, you can still get a fresh baked cookie for $.75. I believe the reason is that they're also a wholesaler. While I enjoy Sriracha as much as the next fan, I wish they'd nix that as the only condiment and replace it with authentic curry ketchup and/or Bavarian mustard. Cute space, there's loaves of bread on the wall. This is a great spot in the summer as their entire side wall opens up into a patio, and apparently they're very dog friendly.

Mark S.

Yelp
This is an excellent bakery. Open Wednesday thru Sunday. A nice variety of various baked goods. Quite interesting, not the usual... My "Franzbrot" was extremely fine! Next, the brownie w/chocolate icing... heavenly mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Not just a bakery, but a cool spot ... please check my photos to get a better view... Sometimes they get busy, might take a minute... Don't miss their Farmers Market booth at PSU Saturday mornings!

Masil M.

Yelp
Anything pretzel was good. Just the pretzel or pretzel sandwiches, delicious. Soft and chewy and not too much salt. The potato salad was pretty good. We split a few of the sandwiches and they were all tasty.

Mark M.

Yelp
Great choice of german (bavarian) style cakes and pastries, and a selection of breads. None of it is "fake german" baking. Small beer hall lunch menu to go with the taps of german beer, which includes Kloster Andechs (!)

Sayeh Z.

Yelp
After carefully searching for the perfect bakery while out of town, I saw how all the locals raved and recommended Fressen Bakery. In fact, when we got in line, a huge one formed behind us along the street. So it must have been the best one around...right? As much as I would love to throw down a 5 star and acknowledge what seems like everyone's common opinion, Fressen Bakery was rather mediocre, and that's being generous with my words. Albeit a cute shop, many of the breads were bland, lacking flavor, and seemed like what you would get from a supermarket. We ordered the olive bread and another loaf, the first which lacked olives except some chopped up pieces throughout a rather dry loaf. We also got a "Nutella monkey bread" , and German cinnamon roll, and a "Bavarian croissant". 1) No Nutella in that pastry. 2) No Bavarian cream in the croissant. And 3) I guess the roll was fine, but pretty hard to mess up a cinnamon roll. Service was ok, I stepped inside to look at some the the menu items not having been there before and actually just got yelled at by the younger lady at the front. Probably could have relayed to me the information in a nicer tone. Another older woman who helped us was actually quite kind and helpful, elaborating on the things the former was too short and annoyed to. If you're from LA or used to SF bakeries like I am, trust me, you'll probably be disappointed. Otherwise if you're not as picky as I am when it comes to goodies, I guess give it a go.

Kristen M.

Yelp
Go here, order it all, drink it all, leave happy. We love German food and Fressen's chef made some amazing adaptions using traditional ingredients. The ambiance is just what you want too.. bench seating, polka, and drendels.

Thomas T.

Yelp
What can I say about how wonderful this place and these people are. From the breads that are made with love that could only be found in the owners mother and grandmother's traditions. Pastries that aren't overloaded with sugars so the flavors can come out.

Eve N.

Yelp
It pains me to give a bad review for a neighborhood bakery, but their stollen was really disappointing. It was a splurge for me - $22 plus tip is a lot for a load of bread - and there was no marzipan in it at all. I grew up eating stollen from German bakeries and know what it should taste like. I would have been better off getting one of the prepackaged ones from a German deli.

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Amazing every time. Unique, cool and delicious. Perfect size portions. The coffee is just right.

Zach L.

Yelp
I love everything I've ever had from Fressen. I especially enjoy the seasonal flavors of the Danish pastry, the breakfast sando, and the new Ham bagel sandwich. If you ever have the opportunity to catch Fressen when they're serving dinner, I highly recommend it. They once had a veggie spaetzle with mushrooms that blew my tiny little mind. The staff are amazing, and this is one of my favorite spots in Portland.

Tamara L.

Yelp
It's a very plain little coffee shop off of Gleason and 70th. I don't know how I've missed this place in all the years it's been in business. After reading the reviews which were kind of mixed the real problem seemed to be with the lack of courtesy at this establishment. I was fortunate as to not have been given anything other than courtesy today and I also found the clientele to be extremely pleasant. I've never been to Germany so I'm not up on German baked goods but I don't have to be in Germany to know when the bakery items taste good which was the story here. There is ample seating inside and out and it is very easy to get in and out of the building I always have to pay attention to that because I have some physical disabilities so for those of you who have a cane or crutches nothing keeping you from getting in and out lots of easy seating. The business opens at nine and I would recommend getting there early as possible because at 9:40 AM things are really starting to fill up. First of all the coffee was great, I had a simple mocha and it was an excellent cup of coffee enhanced by dark chocolate. I had the popular sandwich witH bacon and I do believe it was Gruyère cheese on a pretzel type of bread, a lot of flavor, dense and filling. I don't think it was unreasonable at six dollars given I left satisfied. My friend had a pretzel bun with Gruyere cheese and ham, she couldn't finish it as it was so filling. We both bought some items from the glass case where we found Nutella drizzled croissant and cinnamon rolls. There were also tartes in the case, savory items and the most interesting product that Fressen makes called spicy peanut butter. I do think we will try this place again and I just might leave with that spicy peanut butter!

Clint N.

Yelp
It's super rare that everything I order from a place is this good. I live in the neighborhood and lass by frequently, noticed they were open limited hours and generally missed the times, just noticed the large neon pretzel in the window and so when I saw them open I stopped in. Both people working were incredibly friendly and helpful. I ordered a pretzel, a Nutella croissant and a galette. As my other reviews have shown I'm a bit ... particular about my sweets and literally everything I ordered was perfect. Just perfectly executed, cooked, fillings were delicious, pretzel had the right bread like but chewy texture, croissant was flaky while also being substantial without a hint of that fake butter taste some can have. Galette was I'd say the best I've ever had. I highly, highly, recommend this place. I'll be back, many times.

Brandon L.

Yelp
I loved the German vibe here and fresh chives on cream cheese bagel baked there was amazing
