Grand Designs: Hotels That Rival Nearby National Parks

"A destination lodge on the east side of Tasmania, nestled between Freycinet National Park and Coles Bay, offering a luxury camp cabin experience." - Mark Fedeli

Freycinet Lodge (Coles Bay, Tasmania) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The utterly unique Freycinet Peninsula is a tiny appendage sticking off the sparsely populated east side of the island of Tasmania, which is itself set a hundred miles off the south coast of the not exactly crowded nation of Australia. So suffice it to say, if you make it as far as Coles Bay, you’ve really gotten somewhere. You won’t likely find yourself just passing through — and the Freycinet Lodge is a worthy destination." - Tablet Hotels

Most cabins are dark and outdated. I love the bush but the trees are overgrown right up the windows so no views of any of the stunning surrounds. Food was overpriced pub style food. Breakfast is good. Staff not particularly friendly or helpful on check in. Night staff much better. Atmosphere in the lodge was severely lacking. No activities, chess, books, and furniture and decor cheap and tired. No plants, natural features - tacky table settings and the amazing fireplace set up with a dysfunctional lounge not conducive to enjoying it with others. Family cabin has cooking facilities but nothing to cook with!!! On arrival loads of billboards trying to upsell you on everything - nothing is free - all additional. A walking nap of the area would be a basic addition. Found it poor value for money at $456/night - nothing 5 star about his place. Website only shows the Oavillion style accommodation. 90% of the cabins look nothing like the website or ads.

We had a very well-appointed Coastal Pavilion for two nights which had a stunning view over Coles Bay from a large deck area. Breakfast was very good although the overly loud and inappropriate music at 7am took the gloss off a little. The free mini bar and complimentary wine in our room was much appreciated. We had dinner in The Bay Restaurant which was excellent, see separate review. ||A few negatives:|The room would benefit from a refurbishment;|The lounge area was a little spartan and no Smart TV;|No telephone in room to call reception; and|Numerous light switches which were very confusing. You almost need a written guide. ||There did not seem to be any air conditioning. As we were there in April we didn’t really need it. However, our pavilion room has a number of large windows which on a sunny summer day would make it an uncomfortable greenhouse. ||We got an autoclub discount, but the room was still almost $900 per night. Was this good value? probably not!

We enjoyed our stay in the 'Coastal Pavilion' with striking views across the water. We saw whales, seals, dolphins and White Belly Sea Eagles during the cruise. The additional touches in the cabin were welcome, including the delicious chocolates and games. The breakfast options had 'a bit for everyone' and they catered very well for a Coeliac (many gluten free options). Thank you for a peaceful stay!

We stayed in the Mountain Terrace King and by gosh it's gorgeous! It's not brand new so you can see scuff marks, wear and tear etc but given the location right inside the National Park I imagine building maintenance is hard to come by down the narrow road. |The heated flooring in the bathroom was great given the cold climate at the start of winter. The open air bathtub next to the deck was an indulgence especially with some wine! As part of our package we scored a bottle of wine, welcome chocolates and free mini-bar stocked with plenty of snacks. Food wise, we didn't expect much given the remote location but were pleasantly surprised. Common dietary markers like gluten free, vegetarian and dairy free are all listed on the menu. |The location is beautiful, with the main building right by the water. We even saw three whales in the bay over breakfast! What a treat!

Utterly Disappointed – A Sad Decline from What It Once Was As a former employee of Freycinet Lodge, I was heartbroken to witness how far the experience has fallen. What was once a place of pride, quality, and attention to detail now feels like a poorly managed shadow of its former self. Our recent dinner was, frankly, appalling. The meals were punitive in size — tiny, uninspired, and priced outrageously. For example, the lamb racks, only 2, with 3 tiny carrots (Dutch) was $54. The so-called “premium” dishes lacked substance and flair, and my mother’s meal was entirely forgotten. By the time it arrived (almost 30 minutes later), the rest of us had cold plates in front of us, and her dish was overcooked, dry, and completely tasteless. It was such a disappointment that it cast a shadow over the entire evening. Cocktails were another letdown. There was little choice, and every drink came in those heavy, chunky “men’s club” style glasses — nothing elegant, nothing suited to different preferences. It’s as if they’ve stopped caring about the little touches that used to make the lodge feel special. To top it off, the fireplaces weren’t even lit, it’s winter!!!!! So, leaving the dining area cold and uncomfortable. The few waitstaff who were present seemed rushed and overwhelmed, making service painfully slow and impersonal. I never thought I’d say this about a place I once spoke of so proudly — but I genuinely regret returning. What used to be a luxury, nature-infused experience now feels like a box-ticking exercise designed to squeeze money from guests without delivering value or warmth. Freycinet Lodge, you can and should do better. Right now, you’re not even close. Mother’s meal should’ve been complimentary.

Our stay at Freycinet Lodge was nothing short of magical. The property is absolutely stunning, perfectly nestled in nature with a breathtaking view over the bay. We instantly fell in love with our room surrounded by trees and serenity, with an incredible view on the bay. The staff were exceptionally kind, welcoming, and professional throughout our stay. The room was spotless and beautifully presented, with thoughtful amenities that went above and beyond our expectations. The à la carte breakfast included in the stay was outstanding, both in quality and setting—enjoying such a delicious meal with that view was the perfect way to start the National Park exploration day. No doubt one of the most enchanting spots in Tasmania. The beauty of the property truly does justice to the stunning surroundings. We can’t wait to return and we strongly recommend the property. We send a big thank you the all the staff for our lovely stay.

This is a late review we stayed at the Freycinet Lodge in Tasmania, and it was an unforgettable experience. Nestled in a serene forest area next to a beautiful lake, the location offered a perfect escape into nature. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, providing all the amenities needed for a relaxing stay. The highlight was definitely the delicious à la carte food, which was a treat after a day of outdoor activities. There were plenty of bicycle rides and hiking trails around the lodge, making it an ideal spot

Freycinet Lodge is in a stunning location, with beautiful views of the bay and easy access to nearby hikes and sights. The restaurant was wonderful, offering delicious food with a view, and the staff were all very friendly and accommodating throughout our stay.||However, the family cabins were a huge letdown. They felt dusty, damp, and quite dated. Unfortunately, I had a massive allergy attack from all the dust in the bed, which really affected my experience.||I suspect most of the glowing reviews are for their modern Coastal Pavilions, which look far superior to the older cabins. If you’re considering staying here, I would strongly recommend booking one of those instead.||Overall, a mixed experience—fantastic location and restaurant, but the accommodation standard depends heavily on the room type.

Yelp
Such a nice place to stay. Vith a marvelous view on the Coles bay from the restaurant and the terrace. The sunset is incredible ! The cabin was nice and pretty. Beds are confortable. The room was quite spacious for twoo with a big shower :-) The only problem with the room was the wifi. We were at the end of the lodges and we didn't received the signal... They are gentle and if you want to make a reservation for an activity, don't mind, just ask them they'll do for you. The breakfast buffet is incredible. English breakfast such as continental. Fresh products and they fill it regularly so you never miss something ! One regret for the breakfast is the lack of hot chocolate. You must buy it. If you want to enjoy a marvelous place with nice service and beautiful view, don't hesitate !
