What Dining on a Chicago Street Looks Like | Eater Chicago

"A bar without food on the closed stretch, Friar Tuck’s sat out the weekend and remained closed rather than participating in the outdoor dining setup." - Ashok Selvam

We were vsiting from Utah and decided to stop in. Inside it feels really comfortable. The onion soup was amazing. The Little John was amazing. The cheeseburger was amazing. When the server asked how I would like my burger done we knew the kitchen knew their stuff. Our server was great. I loved that the food was so good and affordable. Quick tip: Remember your sunglasses for when you leave. It's very dimly lit so when you go back into the daylight you may need time to adjust before you can drive.

Google
My salad was good. Not many gf options which I knew going in....wanted a bloody but I think the waitress was either uninterested or too busy to check the mix to see what it was/if it was gf. Unfortunately, I can't trust things that are "probably" a standard used mix. My friend said her foccacia bun was very good and fluffy!

This was my first time visiting in 38 years. They discontinued the toga & robe uniforms just last August 2024, and replaced them with maroon polo tops. I suppose that's a sign of the times. The restaurant exterior and interior are exactly as remembered, with 2 small stained glass windows providing all of the natural light inside. It's a neat place, uniquely original. The wait staff was friendly and the food was deliciously filling.

Google
Wife & I decided to try something different today. Glad we did! This was a pleasant surprise. Waitstaff was very helpful & Pleasant. Food was good. Could have brought the salad & soup out before main special, but was ok,I get it they were busy. All good! Tastey though. Our first time there! As I said; A pleasant surprise. Oh, price was very reasonable. Thank you- Friar Tuck's R/S, Randy & Cheryl of Beaver Dam, Wi.

Google
New place was recommended. Food and service excellent. Needs an update needs higher chairs at tables in dining area.

Google
Awesome service. Yes, waited approximately 20 minutes but we had 8 of us so not long wait. Great food, great waitress service. Genuinely care and concerned about your visit being pleasant. ALWAYS great job.

Google
Very interesting restaurant/bar. Our server was polite but blunt... very straight to the point because she was busy. This place was refreshingly different. And good food!

Google
Our server Ellie was fantastic! We came for our 2 year's birthday lunch, and Ellie was so thoughtful. Brought us crayons, a high chair, a separate plate to portion out her foos. And best of all, gave her 2 maraschino cherries topping her water cup, such a special treat for her. Thanks for the legendary service!

Yelp
This place is a gem. Excellent inexpensive food with great service. We stopped on or way back from Door County and we're very glad we did. This place is a cross between a bar and a sandwich shop. Half the menu consists of deep fried starters, burgers and the requisite Friday fish fry, the other half has a great selection of soups, salads and sandwiches. We ordered adult beverages and they arrived fairly quickly. Even though it was Friday, we turned down the fish special and opted for soup and sandwiches. We both ordered the French onion soup. It was excellent. My order was for soup and the half sandwich special with a cheeseburger as my sandwich. This was a great option for me as the regular menu cheeseburgers is 1/2 lb which is way too big for me. One of my husband's favorite sandwiches is a Reuben. The caveat being it has to be on dark rye, not marble rye. Friar Tuck made his day serving up a meaty corned beef Rueben with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on dark rye with a side of thousand island dressing. Both sandwiches came with carrot and celery sticks with a side of ranch dip. Nice touch! We will stop here again the next time we're in town.

Yelp
My husband loves the old school charm & hearty sandwiches from the FT in Oshkosh but they close Sundays so we stopped at the Fondy location. The inside is wonderfully retro with faux medieval touches and rolly Naugahyde chairs from the 80's. The servers still wear uniforms (unflattering mini-monk dresses) and they still have an old school comment box - take that Yelp! The menu is simple - sandwiches, soup and a few fried apps. It's really cheap and the portions are hearty. They give you veggies and dip instead of chips so it's healthy I guess. I had a nice hot roast beef sandwich served on a nice toasted roll with au jus. Two thumbs up from me. Service was fast & friendly too. Lunch was $25 for 2 including drinks - definitely a great value.

Yelp
This was the second time my husband and I came here and we had poor service. It seems like if they don't know you, you are waiting. We ordered out drinks and had to wait 20 mins for when someone who was seated after us got there drinks with in 5 mins. It also took an half an hour for our waitress to come and take our order. Other people who sat after us got there drinks and food faster because the waitresses knew the customers. I will not become back here again. Everyone should be treated equally weather you know us or not. We will and do tip good.

Yelp
Between the Oshkosh and Fond du Lac locations I've been enjoying Friar Tucks for close to 20 years. That said, I'm disappointed and surprised that I've never left a review for the Fond du Lac location. My dinner on my most recent visit consisted of a bowl of the soup of the day (cheesy asparagus) and my go to menu item, the double cheeseburger. I don't normally get the soup of the day, but cheesy asparagus sounded interesting and was one I hadn't had before. I thought soup was very good, though it could have been a little hotter temperature wise. In addition to a generous amount of asparagus, I found a few pieces of carrot as well. For only an extra $0.50 I will always recommend the bowl over the cup. If I had to pick a last meal for any reason, the double cheeseburger from Friar Tucks is it. I personally believe this burger is absolute heaven. I order it medium every time and maybe only once in 20 years has it not come out perfectly medium. The sheer amount of cheese is drool worthy and the burger patties don't need the massive amounts of seasoning like other restaurants use to cover up poor quality meat. The double cheeseburger is not for the faint of heart given that it's one pound of meat before cooking, but I say don't back down from the challenge. At the worst, you'll have amazing tasting leftovers.

Yelp
Went on a Sunday late morning. I specifically wanted the reuben sandwich because I had it a few years ago there and it was so good. It did not disappoint! Best reuben anywhere! My husband had the double cheeseburger which was a POUND of meat. He loved it but stated he wished it came with lettuce and tomato instead of raw veggies on the side. The service was great with very friendly staff. Took home 2 slices of pumpkin pecan cheesecake for later that evening which was fantastic. Great place to go!

Yelp
Have been to the restaurant and live south of FDL so am glad I found one closer. This and the restaurant are great. Wonderful food, fun atmosphere, and great, fast service. Have had fish fry and burgers. Both are wonderful. I'm not a fan of soup but my sister really enjoys their soups, she like the cheese soup and my brother in law likes the French Onion soup. The wait staff wear classic uniforms. I have only been during the lunch hour and Friday fish and there is usually a wait so a beer or old fashion (or two ) is always a good idea while you wait

Yelp
Costumer service: nice but seemed bothered at some point Interior: pretty descent has a medieval era design Food: food was my biggest complain I don't know if medieval era didn't use spices because all of our food had no flavor at all it was just so bland Not coming back
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Meh. Interior was interesting. It felt straight out of the 70's, but was clean and cared for. The service was good. The food was average, however. I had a cheeseburger and it was very bland. You get a hearty portion and it's inexpensive, but it's also not memorable.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
So much like the Oshkosh location! Gotta love the "lost in the 70's vibe"! There were so many similar places when I was a kid and so few are left. Super friendly place with a strong local following. You'll love the trusted old standbys - steak sandwich, burgers, soups, etc... I INSIST that we hit up the Friar every time we are in the little Apple or SloshKosh!! Take your Grandma, she'll love it!

Yelp
We were driving home from Milwaukee and I was craving a French dip sandwich. We ended up at Friar Tucks in Fond du lac. It was adorable! Christine, our waitress, was one of the best servers I've ever had. She was fantastic! I mentioned what I was looking for and she told me she will hook me up with a loaded pot roast sandwich and au jus. My husband ordered a smokehouse burger. We ordered friar fries. Well Christine brought us one of the fry orders as an appetizer loaded with cheese, bacon and sour cream. She said they were not on menu but knew we would love them. She was totally accurate! Our food came and was delicious. Excellent food. Excellent service. Plus on a Sunday it was buy a drink get a drink. Who could ask for more.? Btw, Christine said she has worked here since the place opened in 1980. She appears to love people and her job. Took so much pride in the business and food. I loved that the most!

Yelp
Fantastic Reuben sandwiches and sweet potato fries. Busy lunch crowd on Sunday. Yumm

Yelp
Fare price for a meal , very consistent , friendly bar and wait staff , very good soup and sandwich place ,free refills ,ample parking ,decent waiting area with a bench !

J W.

Yelp
Service poor, over an hour wait at 7pm wednesday night. Order wrong, ran out of large burgers so gave me 2 burgers, one was still red. Just gross. Used to be good. Not coming back.
google avatar

Priscilla Y.

Yelp
Prices are very reasonable! About $7 for a sandwich without sides. That is about lunch take out prices but this is a sit down place w table service. We found the service to be kind and fairly quick for it being the dinner rush. The roast beef sandwich was very tender and came w a side of tasty au jus for dipping. Hubby had the garlic mushroom burger special for $6.95 and a side of sweet potato fries which were excellent and very light and crispy. They were served w a creamy sauce but it was so light i couldn't tell what it was. Perhaps sour cream?

Yelp
Will definitely eat here again. Food is excellent and great atmosphere. Everything is exceptional here at Friar Tucks.
google avatar

Patty L.

Yelp
Excellent food and wonderful customer service. Prices were budget friendly also. Can't wait to go back!

Rachel S.

Yelp
It's not my kind of place but I think people from around here like it. Our food was not tasty and on a personal note the employee dress code left me feeling creeped out. Maybe I just don't understand the vibe?

Vangie P.

Yelp
Too slow , service is poor . Food is great once you get it ! The inside of the restaurant is dark , but unique. Again, I must emphasize the service is bad ! I held a group luncheon here for the very first time just to add to the number of places for lunch each month . We deleted this restaurant in the rotation list !
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
So many negative reviews for such a great spot. This is no fancy establishment, but if you're looking for a casual lunch, this is perfect. Prices were very reasonable and portion sizes were on point. The restaurant is clearly not meant to be modern, the old school dive bar feel adds to the charm. It's dimly lit inside with old booths, glass wear etc. Very Wisconsin supper club feeling. I had the French onion soup and a wrap. Both were delicious! I washed it down with a bloody mary that was made from scratch. Yum! This is a great place to grab a casual meal - I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Erin P.

Yelp
Guilty pleasure. Oh how I wish there was one closer to MKE. You will never be disappointed in a sandwich here. There isn't anything bad but we are partial to the classic Prime Rib and Pot Roast sammys. Don't fool around and always, ALWAYS get some French Onion soup. It's out of this world and served up with bread baked in house daily. If you are thirsty: the bartenders are not shy and pour a mean drink. We love this place.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
The food was good. Definitely no complaints on that.i got the Cajun chicken sandwich and my husband got the bacon cheeseburger. We also got dessert, red velvet cheesecake and the Chocolate cake. However we were there during a shift change so we kind of got forgotten about and no one checked on us for awhile. Overall though if we're in the area wed probably stop back.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped here for drinks, warning when you walk in on a sunny day you will be blinded by darkness. This is the darkest I have ever seen. It's a bar / restaurant with a mix of young and older people. I look at the tapper when my eyes adjusted and saw spotted cow, yes that will do. They asked if I wanted to see a menu but I left my flash light in the car and said no. They were all friendly. This is a friar theme place with some woman wearing I guess friar out fits. The spotted cow came with a frosted glass and so did everyone else, I like a fresh frosted glass with each beer. Food was going out but I was just having drinks. Next time I will try the food. This was a kind of cool place to hang out.

Yelp
We are from SC. Asked for advice on food. We we're sent here from the Widmer Cheese Store. She said that the Onion soup was the best. We had soup and half sandwich. It was great and we are stuffed. Great place, good service and clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Sue is great waitress get her if you go!! She gives the best service! The food is good too, make sure to check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
I had the veggie platter. It was really good and the dill dip is yummy. For dinner I had the Little John sandwich with fabulous onion rings. Wow! Again fabulous onion rings. The sandwich had an excellent taste. Lots of cheese Good prices and portion sizes. I'm leaving feeing very full and satisfied. The atmosphere is comfortable casual. And the people are friendly.

Yelp
If you want a burger or a sandwich in Fond du Lac, find someplace else. The food quality is on par with with the rest of the geriatric-inspired menus at Oasis, Faros, Schreinders and Sebastian's. Low quality food, relatively nice employees, and, of course, a bar to forget that you're eating in Fond du Lac. Is that why its so dark in here? There's a part of me that really wants to like Friar's. I have family that enjoys this place, so I occasionally (and begrudgingly) join them. The waitstaff is friendly enough, but I just can't get over the poor quality of the food. It's like the people in the kitchen have no sense of taste. How can a burger be bland, have bland cheese on it, get no flavor from bacon, and then have bland barbecue sauce with it? I can't fathom it. Flavor is not hard to achieve, but apparently they don't get it. Maybe when the employees won the lottery, they should have spent less on their flashy diamonds (really, they flaunt it), and given the owners some money to bring in someone who knows how to cook. But that's Fond du Lac for you: uninspired and bland. But hey, if you just want sustenance and your gruel isn't cutting it, then Friar's might be a step up.

Yelp
Probably one of the best lunch places in FdL, and I've been to damn near every other one. Some highlights from their smallish menu: +Chili. Lordy lordy, their chili is fantastic. It's the best I've had that wasn't made by someone in a chili cookoff. It blows every soup the have right out of the water. +Chicken club on a croissant. The croissant is soft and buttery and the chicken is so juicy, grab a couple extra napkins. +Any of the burgers. Huge, juicy, lots of topping choices, and served on fresh baked bread. Primo. +Friar's Club and Sherwood Forest. Don't let the goofy names fool you, these sammiches are the real deal. Tons of meat, great bread, cheese and toppings. A meal in themselves. It gets quite busy at lunch, so get there early.

Lori P.

Yelp
Received semi-rude reception when placing a phone inquiry about whether they currently have dine-in service. We are not local and had no idea if this restaurant had pandemic restrictions on seating. Based on that phone interaction we are choosing to meet fellow travelers somewhere else in the area for a meal. Reminder - reputations are made one interaction at a time!
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Seemingly a great place to cheat on your spouse. Good food--bar food--but probably the darkest restaurant I have ever been in. You could get away with all sorts of things in that lack of light. Really reasonable prices. Dinner for three with drinks--$42.
google avatar

Cheri J.

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner after stopping in Fon Du Lac WI and a recommendation. Our server Christine was very passionate about the beer drink and food. She exudes a ton if personality. We ordered the Ruben and prime rib sandwiches upon Christine's recommendation. The prime rib sandwich was delicious. Best I ever had. My husband loved it and he is not usually a fan if prime rib. Since we are traveling she even offered to go cups of whatever we wanted. 2 thumbs up here!
google avatar

Marlaine T.

Yelp
I've only been to Friar Tucks once and even though it was on a very busy night, the service was quick, the food phenomenal and the prices perfect for what we all had. Definitely coming back for more of some of the best food I've had in a long time!! Keep up the good guys!!
google avatar

Pamela C.

Yelp
Love love love this place. This is my 5th time. And I keep saying I'm going to review. So here it goes! The place is quaint and homey feeling. The waitress uniforms are adorable. While waiting for our table we've had complimentary snacks and veggies. The food is fabulous. Their ranch dressing is homemade and perfect for fry dipping They also make their own dill dip for their fresh veggie platter. Taste delish. Their fish is amazing. So far I haven't gone wrong with anything I've ordered. Most especially their wine and spirits. Gin and tonic with lemon is my go to. The prices are great Highly recommended local spot for dinner and drinks.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I miss Friar Tuck's!! I haven't been to Fond du Lac in quite some time, and I regularly think about hopping on a plane just to get some cheese nuggets and carrot cake. Food is so good, and so affordable. What more can you ask for? The interior is dark (no windows) and the wait to be seated gets long, fast. I do agree with a previous review - be careful if there is snow on the ground because the parking lot becomes a skating rink.
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Cute retro spot for lunch. It reminds me of a 70's bar, time has not touched this place! The servers wear monk robes, there are no windows, looks like original furniture. A total throwback. It was like the Regal Beagle, I expected the cast of Three's Company at any moment. Food was decent, good lunch specials. the French onion soup is a highlight, real onions not canned junk.
google avatar

Laurie J.

Yelp
Interesting decor. Very dark (unless you are sitting under one of the recessed can spot lights) and dated, but surprisingly everything is neat, and in good condition. The carpet needs to be vacuumed. The waitress "costumes" are a hoot, but totally wrong. I would think there would be food to match the theme, but this is not the case. Started with the seafood gumbo. It came out real quick. Great taste! Potatoes were mushy. The broth could be thinned just a little. Maybe add some fresh corn to add a level of complexity. But the flavor was great. Roll was so soft and fresh. I got the Friday fish. French fries very good. Coleslaw very good. Rye bread, soft and delicious. The haddock lightly fried a beautiful golden brown and the fish was chewy. :( For the price, this is a good place.
google avatar

Jen O.

Yelp
I'm so glad that I read the reviews because I NEVER would have walked in the door otherwise. The place looks really dark and outdated from the outside. Honestly, it's a bit dim inside, too, but that is a part of the Friar theme. We were seated and waited on immediately. The food is really well priced, and just fantastic. I was eating with two picky teens who don't like much, and they were really impressed with the menu and the food. The cheeseburgers, onion rings and fries were excellent. The best part is that 5 of us ate for under $50. Don't let the underwhelming exterior fool you. Inside you will find fantastic and affordable food, and waitstaff dressed like monks.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Racist and bad service. We got in and a white couple that came in after us got their names on the list first, two waitresses by the door didn't even look at us and we had to ask to get placed on their list. Two waitresses at the door... not one greeted us, just standing there spaced out. Mangers need to do a better job training these people if they're supposed to be in customer service.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place out for a long time. The friar outfits for the staff were interesting. The staff were friendly and willing to make suggestions. The French onion soup was a great choice but I would have liked more cheese. The Rueben sandwich was lean with just the right amount of meat. This was a solid lunch choice that you will not go away hungry.
google avatar

Pete M.

Yelp
I really want to like this place but every time I eat here it disappoints. At its best the service has been mediocre and at its worst just downright terrible. The food is also pretty subpar. Never have had a grilled sandwich here where the bread wasn't soft and soggy. I mean how hard is it to make a Ruben with crisp grilled bread. All the other sandwiches here never rise beyond just okay. Pretty sad for a place that specializes in sandwiches. Besides, top it with enough melted cheese and no one will notice the subpar ingredients. I love the cheesy 1970s look and feel but the decor isn't enough to keep me coming back although I imagine that I will occasionally come back in hopes that it will get better.
google avatar

Howard Z.

Yelp
Customer service is definitely lacking here. The hostess and waitresses not only failed to greet us but they also didn't take our names down for the wait list. Maybe this place prioritizes senior citizens because the elderly couple that came in after us were greeted and placed on the wait list immediately. As someone who has worked in the food service industry this place is a fail. In addition, I could tell the food was cheap quality and either just microwaved or previously frozen.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Bring your sunglasses. Ask the wait staff where you can find a uniform like there's to wear every halloween. Then ask them how much of their lottery winnings did they spend. its at this point you should ask for a menu. dont drink too many of the free refills, and prepare to be stuffed to the max as the food is usually very filling. the fries are huge and there isnt much on the menu that isnt good. there are enougfh tv's to watch your favorite nasacr race or packer/viking game....oh yeah, there are no windows, you have just entered a cave. when you leave please put on said sunglasses because the sunlight will blast you and you will be blind for a few moments...unless its winter then you'll bust your ass because they dont salt the parking lot very well. overall its probably the best cheap eats in Fondy. ha, i said eats.
google avatar

Keith S.

Yelp
Went there today. Excellent food. Piss poor attitude from the bartender. It was around noon, I had a question, he felt that I was bothering him. I ordered a Southern Comfort and Pepsi. Was charged $3.25. Not exactly sure what he gave me but it wasn't Southern Comfort especially at $3.25. It was probably a rail mixer because he was in a bad mood. Waitress refunded the drink and made it right. Could have been five stars but he ruined it for himself

Meg L.

Yelp
I love this place. The portion size was huge for the price. The atmosphere is very interesting. No complaints
google avatar

Grace R.

Yelp
Our waitress (Laura)was rude didnt talk very unfriendly I didnt like my wrap had brown lettuce in otherwise no lettuce. Hardly any tomatoes or bacon was supposed to be a blt wrap. But had only chicken pretty much. Never will be coming to this location again.
google avatar

Karl Z.

Yelp
A great value and nice, quality sandwiches. One of the best burgers in the area, if not the best, and the standard assortment of fried appetizers, etc.
google avatar

Ra B.

Yelp
Food not that impressive. It didn't help when the waitress forgot to bring out 2 orders.
google avatar

Fiji W.

Yelp
Patty Melt was 9 bucks with the large order of fries. they forgot to add my pickle with my to-go-order. cooked well done, flavorful-not bland yet nothing spectacular. service was choppy and not organized. flavor and portions A+ . Service C+
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Awesome Sandwiches! Burgers are amazing - bread is freshly baked in their own bakery... Consistently the best sandwich in FDL.
google avatar

Doug D.

Yelp
A nice place, but very dark, Friar Tucks is a great pit stop in Fon Du Lac. Prices are very reasonable, portions are nice and the staff is sufficient. One word of warning, the friar tuck hints at being a hamburger. It is NOT, rather it appears to be filled with a Salisbury steak patty! (Like from a frozen dinner). Stay away from that particular dish. The other meals were very good.
