On the Grid : Fricska

"Fricska welcomes guests in a basement hideaway with an earthy vibe, spiced up by some pallets for stools and a winged fish painted on the wall. Their daily lunch menu never fails to impress, and the wide selection of wines makes sure that guests’ spirits are always high. If you are looking for some harmonious bites accompanied by easy-going service, this self-described tourist trap is the place to go." - We Love Budapest

Fricska 2.0

"Fricska has been reborn, only this time with a slight speakeasy vibe. Its unassuming exterior gives nothing away, but downstairs you’ll find a bright and trendy bar-cum-restaurant with a modern bistro feel. The food is a perfect match, with traditional dishes lightened and modernised to take on an appealingly fresh style. The lunch menu is a steal and the chocolate soufflé is a sure-fire hit. Service is smooth and attentive, and the friendly team will happily guide you through the fully Hungarian wine list." - Michelin Inspector

5 MICHELIN Listed Contemporary Hungarian Restaurants To Visit In Budapest

"Bib Gourmand. The subtitle “gastropub” is misleading, as this is a contemporary cellar bistro with a crisp white décor and a laid-back vibe. The blackboard menu offers appealingly unadorned dishes with Hungarian, French and Italian influences. The home-made pastas are a highlight and the weekday lunch menu is a steal." - Kenneth Goh

The place has a very cozy atmosphere, we went there for the lunch menu. The service was incredibly kind and fast, and we could choose between a two- or three-course menu. On the day we visited, there was no vegetarian option available, but the waitress asked the chef to prepare a special main course for me and organized everything perfectly. Unfortunately, the dessert didn’t meet our expectations, but every other dish was flawless and absolutely delicious. The experience was definitely worth it, and we would love to return!

Amazing meal. Every dish was tasty, prepared in an attractive but unpretentious way, with excellent service. I’d eat here every week if I didn’t live half a world away. Duck, lamb, pork, all perfectly cooked, paired with sauces that enhanced the meat. Wines recommended were great. The whole meal was fantastic. Highly recommend.

We had an amazing experience in this hidden gem! We tried the lunch menu. First of all, the prices are ridiculously low. Main dish costs around ~$10 which is crazy for such dishes. We shared 4 dishes and a glass of wine. Everything was super tasty and fresh. The shrimp pasta was amazing, as well as the gnocchi with meat. The duck lag was very good as well. Above all, the lady (owner of the place?) was so friendly, welcoming and helpful. We’ll definitely come back in our next trip to Budapest!

We had an amazing experience dining here. The tasting menu includes some classic Hungarian dishes eleveted to a very sophisticated level. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine options. Although there isn't a vegetarian option for the tasting menu, the staff had no issues in swapping out meat for vegetarian options.

BEST MEAL IN BUDAPEST!! We went for lunch and had their specials. Strawberry soup, venison and dumplings, and a berry and pastries dessert. Beautifully paired with Hungarian wine that was recommended by the attentive server. Overall made my day.

Best lunch menu in Budapest. Sophisticated compositions with high quality, local ingredients. We had the pea cream soup, beef with carrotts and sour cherry cake. Everything was perfect. Service is extraordinarily good. Highly recommended.

Amazing, quiet place. Loved the service. The chief went as far as agreeing to serve potato gratin as a side dish. Asparagus cream soup, crisp pork head meat, grilled octopus, goulash, and schnitzel were all very good, and gratin was just great (I'll ask for less black pepper next time)

Based on the mixed reviews I knew we might be in trouble… we arrived and it was fairly empty but one it got full it was super noisy and the service was all downhill… a bit understaffed. The fish soup was a total flop. No flavor and something you might find at a Chinese fast food restaurant. The high priced veal meal was not very tender and the meat had no seasoning and the portion was very tiny. The foi gras and the pea risotto were very tasty and well executed… the risotto was huge. The waited never checked on us after the food was delivered. I might return but not sure 🤔
