Philly’s Best Eggs Benedicts and Omelets | Eater Philly

"Community, connection, and equity are central tenets to the mission of this charming café. Among its menu of omelets is the French omelet, made with herbs and gruyère." - George Banks-Weston

We loved Frieda so much that we went three days in a row for breakfast—and on the third day, I even woke up early to go before catching my flight! The food is world-class, the staff is world-class, and the atmosphere is just as special. It’s rare to find a place that nails both food and ambiance, but Frieda does it effortlessly. Every visit felt like a delight, and I can’t wait to come back next time I’m in Philly. Highly recommend!

Google
Their quiches are amazing! I had the quiche Lorraine and it exceeded my expectations. It was crispy on the outside, melty on the inside, balanced flavor and all in all delicious! I would absolutely recommend this! I also tried the almond and chocolate croissant which I wasn't really impressed with, but it was good. I would expect more flakiness like a butter croissant but it was ok. The salad - I had the goat cheese and raw beet salad. Fresh and crispy however the dressing was overpowering citrus-y and ruined the experience for me. I should have tried it first before I dumped it all on the salad. So if you do get that salad, try the dressing first and then dress your salad accordingly. The service was good and friendly. My food was ready in a timely manner and I had it to go, which they had thoughtfully prepared in a bag with everything I needed - even an extra set of utensils (one for the salad and one for the quiche - thank you for that, Frieda!) I love the idea of bringing people together and gaining wisdom and experience from our elders. I loved everything about Frieda and will be back!

From the moment you step in, you’re greeted by colorful decor and attentive staff, making it clear that customer experience is a priority. The menu offers a fantastic selection of dishes, showcasing bold and fresh ingredients.

Absolutely delightful and delicious! I would have taken better pictures but the food was so good I forgot haha. Great service, very nice people!

Google
Great cafe located in the heart of Philadelphia just minutes from Washington Square. The American omelette was very fresh with a good portion of mushrooms and ham. Service was very accommodating overall and welcoming.

Google
Great ambience. Friendly staff. Delicious food served with style! A free pack of wildflower seeds for all customers is a nice touch

Google
The food was very fresh. The coffee was good. The service was good and attentive. The pastries tasted amazing. The produce was fresh. Everything here was very good. Food came quickly, and everything was made to order, which you can see from the seats. Overall, it was very nice quality. Atmosphere is a nice busy Cafe feeling.

Google
Exceeded my expectations in every way. Great menu with excellent and wholesome food that was prepared thoughtfully. Everything from the tea, breads, jams, granola and pastries are all homemade. The Services was attentive & friendly. This place is a gem!

Yelp
We visited here on a Thursday morning and we're greeted at the front and seated immediately. Our first impression was that the place is well decorated and neat. Staff is friendly and the place sells local stuff at the front. We ordered ordered quiche and continental breakfast along with coffee. I did check on their coffee refill policy and it is bottomless. We were worried about the portions as they claimed French, but boy we were wrong. The quiche was personal size and very filling. The continental breakfast, which initially I thought would not be good was infant a great sampler - it had salmon oats granola toast eggs avocado and much more. This was a great way to taste multiple things. Service was prompt and our coffee was being refilled at such fast pace. Bathrooms were clean and had forest music in the background. I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Cute place and idea. The spot looks to pull generations together with a cozy and comforting atmosphere. It's a cafe, but there's an also a full menu. They have artwork and things for sale, but also areas to sit and relax. It's a great concept and the food was pretty good too! I got their avocado toast and my wife and I split their apricot cake. Overall very satisfied with the service, portions, and vibes! Enjoy!

Yelp
Food - (2/5) Ordered the American Omelette. The portion was small and didn't really enjoy the food in relation to the 40 min wait and $17 Service - (3/5) Server was really nice! I just was frustrated at the wait.. only to receive the food that I got Pastry - (4/5) We received some pastries as complementaries for the long wait and they were pretty good! We got a muffin croissant, blueberry muffins and chocolate croissant. I thought they were all solid, nothing was dry/off putting - croissants were a good level of crunch on the outside and soft on the inside and, while I personally don't like blueberries normally, I enjoyed their muffin. Interior/Experience (cute/5) - I think in terms of branding and style the cafe really has a unique feel with their blending of art into the interior space. Enjoyed the interactive art and just being able to peruse through the various items they had. TLDR - go to this place for your pastries/experience, avoid the omelette

Yelp
Another relaxed lunch in a warm atmosphere with attentive staff! Quiches were lovely and accompanied by a mixed salad. Brought a friend from out of town who was impressed. Around 2 PM tables filled for games (mahjong, cards and more) that meet on Wed afternoons. Friendship and friendliness seems to be the theme here and everyone seems to be welcome. In today's world, what a happy surprise!

Yelp
Fab spot for a weekend brunch. Friendly staff, cool art on the walls. Avocado toast was fab- tasty multigrain topped with arugula, a bit of pesto, creamy avocado, sliced tomatoes, and two perfectly poached eggs. Avocado toast at its finest!

Yelp
The place is super cute and nice ambiance. Service was good, and I did enjoy my coffee. I also do like that it's a nonprofit and community oriented. To be honest though, the food was just okay. We ordered the continental breakfast and for the price, the portion felt small.

Yelp
Nice local upscale brunch/lunch establishment that supports a community center. The menu is quite extensive and a particular favorite is the baked goods sampler featuring bread, cream cheese, Gruyère and Brie cheeses, and other delicious goodies. The restaurant is on a historic block of Walnut Street in the beautiful Society Hill section of Philly and eating outdoors on this block is a particular treat when the weather permits.

Yelp
Loved that they had light breakfast options. The croissant was so light and flaky. The yogurt and granola with fresh fruit paired well with the croissant.

Yelp
Frieda is a stunning place to get brunch with friends! I love the mission behind the organization and the artwork and decor was beautiful as well. The service was attentive and welcoming. The brunch food was delicious! Everything we ordered was amazing but my favorites were the mushroom bread pudding, apple french toast and avocado toast. The ingredients were fresh and light.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere at Freida is always am ! It's an art gallery/café with a very European feel to it. It's like eating lunch at an art gallery featuring a different artist every month. The staff is polite and informative. I had a quiche Lorraine and my friend had a salad with watermelon and cottage cheese.

Yelp
When I have friends in town or family visiting, FRIEDA is my go-to for weekend brunch. Some of the food is literally life-changing. For me, the almond croissant and brioche French toast are must-try's for any Philly local or native. This time, we got the quiche Lorraine, American omelet, and baker's basket. The quiche was flaky and not too thick while the American omelette was light and fluffy. The baker's basket is a must-get for me every time I go to FRIEDA. The bread is just so unique and QQ and the almond croissant is to die for. The side salad and sencha tea were both light and fresh tasting. The service is always friendly and kind. I was allowed to be seated almost 25 minutes before the rest of my party joined. (But it wasn't too busy.) However, note should be taken reservations must be made for groups ~6 (and there is gratuity applied). The interior of FRIEDA is always changing with rotating art installations on the walls and rotating shelves at the front selling products ranging from either their own tea or offerings from local artists. There is outdoor seating, as well. Dining at FRIEDA is very aesthetic. Overall, FRIEDA is the epitome of a classy city brunch and I highly recommend dining there to everyone!

Esther D.

Yelp
The inside was really warm and unique with cool art inspired by Frieda. The latte was pretty standard. We got the egg white omelette and it was fine. I think it's a good option for health conscious people. Next time I would try the French omelette. The service was friendly and fast.

Suzy S.

Yelp
Very good breakfast. Cute place, artsy fruit plate French and delicious Nice staff. (Bathroom filthy, go before you get here)

Yelp
Did I slide past Frieda on the way to meet friends to grab one of those chai lattes they make so well? I sure did. Did I double back later on and grab a brisket sandwich to go? I sure did. Did they pack my sandwich so neat, that I didn't spill a single drop while walking and eating? They sure did. Will I be back sooner than later to vibe out with another latte? I sure will. :-)

Yelp
The interior is glowing white - separated into different sections. The food area is the larger section where they don't allow laptops. Incredible service, like it was amazing - I'm v impressed. Small water glasses that require frequent service. Almost croissant was p good. White egg omelet was decent - I'll try something else next time!

Yelp
We loved the location and the outside seating of this spot in Old City. The food was okay. Best part of the meal were the fruit topped French toast (if sweet is your thang)and the roasted potatoes. Service was good. No cocktails on the menu, so they uncorked our drink for us. A nice place to enjoy a leisurely brunch and a nice walk around Olde City after.
google avatar

Yelp
Interesting interior - bright, open, airy, pictures of headless naked bodies hanging on the walls. There's also a gift shop area. It seems like this place serves basic brunch food. I got salmon eggs Benedict because I wanted to try the sweet potato rosti. It's basically potato hash, and it was soggy under the sauce and eggs, so I regretted getting it. It wasn't bad, I just wished I had tried something else, like the mushroom toast, which is a popular dish according to the server. Also got the continental breakfast, which is a lot of food, all good. The employee took away a plate with cream cheese on it before I was done, so he brought extra cream cheese out, which was kind (even though I didn't want to eat more cream cheese - I appreciate the sentiment and customer service). I'd rate this place 3/5, but just for the kind act, I'll rate it 4/5. Kindness and customer service matter a lot to me. Drinks were orange juice and Bangkok tea. The water cups are so small, and I wish they were bigger so that I could drink more freely, or at least leave a big bottle on the table.

Yelp
Frieda always comes up when I try to Yelp for good brunch places in Old City so I decided to take a quick walk over and see what all the buzz was. Immediately entering, it felt very calming as it's this large white box-space with high ceilings. There's a goods store/display right near the entrance where the sell their jams, cards, local items, and Harney & Son's teas. You can either take pastries to go or dine in. I had some time for dine in and as it wasn't too busy (late morning/weekday) I was immediately seated. Service was quick and food came out fairly quickly. Got a hot water with lemon and an avocado toast with salmon. The avocado toast with salmon was two pieces and the ingredients on top were piled high in the toast. A little messy to bite into but the bread was warm and toasty--pesto and arugula provided some sharpness to the salmon and avocado. The tomato slices added some freshness. Got a free refill on the hot water and when I was done with my meal, my plate got cleared pretty quickly. Payment is at your table with a credit card. Looking forward to coming back and trying some other items on the menu when I have some more time to sit and relax.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: Modern Contemporary Great spot to have brunch with pals! The egg white omelette was so filling and the baked basket was DELISH!
google avatar

Kelli K.

Yelp
I really enjoyed sitting outside and having breakfast at Frieda. The salmon croissant was delicious! They were generous with the salmon and whipped cheese and the croissant was buttery, crisp on the outside, and flakey. The fruit bowl was a good size. My friend enjoyed the avocado toast, but it was nothing special. However, I had maybe the worst iced matcha latte of my life here! The matcha they use is not good. Avoid at all costs. Also, the service was so, so slow. We were in no rush to go anywhere so it was fine, but something to keep in mind if you're planning on dining here.

Emil H.

Yelp
Excellent croissants! A very neighborly environment, can't say enough good things about Frieda, always a dining pleasure! It's definitely a not to missed breakfast spot!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were visiting Philly for a quick weekend trip and enjoyed the most delicious breakfast here. To start our server Sabrina made us feel right at home and gave us a few recommendations. We both had lattes, foamy and warm as they hit your mouth. We also shared the mushroom toast which was out of this world, the poached eggs, the bread pudding and the gorgeous sauce. I'll dream about that toast for a while. Our chocolate almond croissant was pure bliss, the fruit was fresh and ripe and the potatoes were crispy and moist as you bit into them. Not to the mention they sell the most beautiful art, and make their own jam and granola. You bet your bottom dollar we bought some strawberry jam, a granola bar and the Elixr coffee. Thank you for an incredible experience! We will be back and if you're visiting Philly or if you live there and you've never gone to Frieda's, go now!
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
I ordered the continental breakfast which came with a croissant, toasted brioche, smoked salmon, prosciutto, gruyère, brie, whipped herb cream cheese, a hard boiled egg, and granola or bircher muesli for just $13! I thought it was such a good deal and super filling!! However, my friends meals didn't seem as worth it or as filling which is why I'm giving four stars instead. The continental breakfast was def worth and I'd recommend getting it when you come to Frieda. The interior of the restaurant is also very aesthetic and has paper butterflies hanging off the ceiling!
google avatar

Yelp
Always fantastic food and great service. Omelets are dynamite, pastries and coffee might be even better? Outside seating is wonderful, the little gift/art shop always has plenty to see and their community connection is admirable. Some of my favorites in no particular order: French omelets, mushroom toast, their chorizo, chocolate almond croissants, Vietnamese iced coffee, fruit salad, multigrain bread with butter and their jam(!). Can't go wrong for a perfect breakfast or brunch.
google avatar

Patty T.

Yelp
This is a neighborhood spot which I have been to for weekend brunch. Usually ok, but went yesterday and had the French omelette which was as flat as a crepe and devoid of anything that would classify it as an omelette. Overpriced for what it was.

Chris W.

Yelp
Charming treasure of a restaurant with delicious, high quality, freshly made food. Staff makes you feel welcome and special. Be sure to try the baked goods.

Yelp
It's been 5 years since my review of Frieda, so here I go about to gush over how great this cafe is, post-2020 era and all! Frieda is fantastic. Their mission is to connect generations (see my 2016 review), and they continued to offer programming online post-2020 (with helpful how-to instructions for folks who needed it). Programming includes book clubs, language groups, meditation groups, language groups. You name it, they have it, virtually or (slowly) in person. The cafe is set up outdoors on the sidewalk and in a couple parking spaces. They have had this set up since before the days of Covid, but it became essential after the shutdown. They also have limited seating indoors, if interested. The outdoors space includes lots of greenery, so even if you are near a table, you may have a large plant or 2 placed between the tables for privacy. Nice touch! The food is still on point. They offer a breakfast menu all morning and afternoon and a lunch menu at lunch. They have takeout dinners as well. They will deliver to nearby zip codes. The pastries are some of the best in the Philly area (have you TRIED their almond croissants?!?!). Check out Frieda in the 2020s. You'll be glad you did!

Yelp
I was really underwhelmed with my experience and I think that maybe I was too excited before coming here. The outside exterior of the restaurant and the indoor vibe is so different from any other restaurant. The inside looks like an art gallery that converted from an old loft. Inside it is bright with high ceilings and then different color paint chippings decorating all the side walls. The menu was interesting, but the food was such a disappointment. We started with a lemon poppy scone and it just had no taste. It was dry and seemed like it was missing the buttery element of a scone. We then went with egg white omelet with veggies. It was fine, but just not super memorable. The service seemed very distracted. We were given the wrong drinks and I just didn't feel like we were checked on besides ordering and paying. I think there are many other options I'd rather support in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Id heard a lot of hype about frieda and it was definitely nice but imo did not blow me away. The fall vegan bowl was okay but such a small portion of just like a handful of arugula and some small butternut squash and pecan pieces on top. The bread basket was ok, i didnt think the pastries were too amazing, not very flaky croissants, although i did like the pain au chocolat. The scone was also pretty good. I also unfortunately wasnt a fan of the chai and found it a little on the watery side. Im def being overly critical because overall the food was good but i dont think id come back

Lockie B.

Yelp
We were a large group and still got great service. I only had a latte. Others had breakfast and were happy with their meals.

Yelp
Frieda is one of those places you walk out the door a better person than when you walked in. Not only is the food absolutely exquisite in flavor and depth, but the staff has such a wholesome attitude to them. You can tell the head chef / owner was born for hospitality, I could feel he knew that each moment is unique and special. This genuine gratitude radiated from the moment he greeted us to the moment we left. They offer more than just food too. The front space is lined with speciality made items for yourself or to make the perfect gift. One wall is full of creative community programs. It's a truly inspiring space, for your taste buds and soul! Dining options are take out, counter ordering with some table service or full sit down table service. With so many options you can take a quick pit stop or a full lunch date.

maureen p.

Yelp
Simple menu but excellent! Soup, salad, quiche, sandwiches...but so fresh and with exceptional baked goods, coffee, teas. I also love the ambiance: open, industrial, full of light and art (exhibits change often) and aesthetically pleasing crafts and gift items. And the staff is always professional, kind and welcoming. It's one of my favorite spots in the city.
google avatar

Shelley P.

Yelp
Frieda is fascinating. It's truly a shining star in the midst of a scarily selfish world - definitely take a look at their website to learn more about their mission to reconnect generations/the community! Of course, the ambience is bright and colorful, and the food is good - I've been here for coffee/pastries, and afternoon tea (the most recent time I got the (extremely moist) orange cake, yum). But it's the people there that make it great. The first time I went to Frieda, we asked to contribute to the big art piece on the wall (at the time) and they happily allowed us to, even giving us little chocolate cookies to snack on while we worked on our little squares of colored paper. And that's just one warm experience out of many.

Yelp
Just have to say I was deeply impressed with the atmosphere and food quality. I hung out here for hours waiting to be picked up from family coming through Philly from Virginia and I was treated with respect and like family for HOURS. Used the restroom a bunch of times, was sleepy, was reading, was on my phone, had breakfast and was even told please sit down when I waited outside for a time.

Juliana C.

Yelp
Good food, great vibes, nice staff. Had a granola yogurt bowl and enjoyed the ambiance.

Samuel S.

Yelp
Outstanding! Love everything about this neighborhood charming spot. Have had countless brunches here and the food is always delicious and the servers are so kind. We hosted a baby shower for a friend over the weekend. It was high tea with a delightful selection of scones, tea sandwiches, desserts and an assortment of teas. The space is lovely, intimate and easy to decorate, the staff was incredibly helpful and the food was perfect for the occasion. Would highly recommend Frieda for an event. They put together a nice afternoon!

Yelp
We bookmarked this place a while back but was in the area and search came up again and decided to try. The outside was not what was expected since we were looking for a restaurant. The outside looks like a museum gift shop. We went in and ordered from a simple menu but complex tea and coffee menu. Everything was good and the pastry was up to my Parisian husband's liking. I was a bit weird out with the plastic and disposable plates and utensils. I guess that's the new thing. I just prefer in real silverware and real plates and bowls. Anyway it was good food but the presentation could be better.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I walk passed it and wanted to just grab a coffee and a cookie but found out they actually serve brunch! They did have a server at that moment, not sure is it because of the pandemic or it's always been like this. They did have 4-5 tables outside the café for people to use, it has a canteen style where you order your food in the counter and grab yourself a table if any of the them are available. I order a spinach quiche and a continental breakfast, it had me surprised of how tasty the foods are. The portion of the food is just right, not like the regular "American" among that you can't quite finish.

John Z.

Yelp
Found this great spot while on a stroll through the neighborhood. Food was great from a nice variety on the menu. Very good assistance from the staff on our selections. Will be going back

Yelp
By far, it was the worst cafe experience I have had in my many trips to Philadelphia. We came in around 8:45 AM on a Thursday. The staff immediately acts confused about our arrival. The website and Google stats say they open at 8 AM for breakfast. They explain that the kitchen won't be open until 9 AM. We say sure we will have coffee first and then order. They seat us and then virtually ignore us for the next 10 minutes even though there's no one else seated. They finally bring coffee. We ask for sugar and Splenda. They bring us a tray with sugar and other artificial sweeteners, but no Splenda. We ask if they have it. The woman says curtly, if it's not in the sugar holder, they don't have it. No apology and almost suggesting we were wrong for asking. The coffee is bland and lacks richness. They water glasses are of a ridiculous near thimble size, and they barely came back to refill. Why not leave a water pitcher if you are going to use such dumb water glasses? When they did come to fill up the water glasses, they picked up the glass by the rim with bare, unsanitized hands. That's a very poor and unhygienic way to handle a customer's drinkware. They did similarly with coffee refills. This is an unnecessary and careless germ transmission. The food was mediocre, and even the almond croissant was uninspired. The salad was actually the tastiest of what we ordered. The ambiance is cold and industrial with cheap Ikea chairs and tables, which are placed too close together. The bowls are similarly foolishly small and hard to eat from. It's all artistic minded but no disciplined execution or little functional value. Cheap paper placements complete the lameness. The owner should probably stick to doing her art. She doesn't belong in the food service industry. Or if she does miraculously stay in business, she needs to bring in a food service manager to overhaul and retrain her staff in acceptable food hygiene practices and customer service.

Yelp
still a super cute place staff is typically very nice and they were mostly nice this time around. went to meet up with a roommate and look through some apartments, I wasn't aware I was unable to use my laptop in a specific part of the restaurant they very kindly moved me and the rest of my party to the cafe style area. after ordering our tea we waited about 30+ minutes for our food and meanwhile we were asked to leave because we had been there too long, I kindly said that we hadn't received our food yet and then the host apologized and went to check on our food. after that they were very kind and the food was just as good as last time and I love the art installs.

Yelp
Amazing brunch - amazing place! So bright & welcoming. Visiting from Houston and so glad we stopped in for brunch. Greeted kindly and quickly seated. I had the mushroom toast and will be craving it! Husband had the full English and loved it. We had to try the homemade jam so got a slice of brioche with jam as our "brunch dessert" - delicious! The wall art is paint sample cards strung perfectly along the entire walls. Such a cool idea that I now want to copy!

Yelp
Most instagrammable cafe spot in Philly for sure! Everything is so light and feathery and kind of makes you feel like you're in a museum. The ambience definitely gave off French bakery vibes. Everyone was dressed super cute and had a certain demeanor amongst them. I ordered the Egg White Omelette, which was so amazing. It was basically a goat cheese omelette with tomatoes and different squash's. The flavors worked very well together and it absolutely melted in my mouth. The omelette came with brioche bread on the side and with the jam/butter it came with, it was irresistible (also came with a little cup of fruit). 10/10 in my books! I also ordered the matcha latte, there was nothing special about it and it sort of tasted like matcha and milk. The chai latte however was bursting of spices, just the right amount of sweetness and perfect for the winter weather! The servers were also the absolute friendliest! Will most definitely be back soon!! Psa.. Loved the sustainable utensils!

Yelp
Came here this weekend for brunch with a friend! Despite it being a Saturday at 10am, there were still a few tables open inside and out. There's a very cool shopping area in the front of the space selling artisan goods. There is also a to-go counter with coffee and pastries. We sat down and split a chocolate almond croissant, and then I ordered the Frieda, which was poached eggs over mushroom bread pudding. Highly recommend! My friend got one of the omelets which I didn't try. My only gripe is that, as other reviewers have noted, the bamboo disposable silverware (while I love that it is compostable), sucks to eat with. The tines of the fork are too short and the knife too dull. We both got lattes as well which were delicious. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Breakfast, brunch, or lunch at Frieda is always a treat. The food, the service, the ambience? Just right.
google avatar

Ruby N.

Yelp
A super cute brunch place with a wide variety of pastries. I find the portions fine, but it really varies with every dish (the continental breakfast comes with a lot of sides). I personally enjoy the mini waffles, but my partner doesn't like thin waffles, so that is something to consider. He also did not like that the chicken pot pie was not exactly traditional, but I thought it was fine. Overall, I would recommend stopping by if you are in Old City!
google avatar

Yelp
What a fantastic place to go for a brunch bite! The restaurant interior is gorgeous, with walls completely covered in gradients of paint color palette styles, forming a giant rainbow painted across the walls. The food is also very tasty, and I highly recommend their bread basket - after going to some other places in the city, I definitely realize that I didn't appreciate how fresh and soft their breads are (likely from a copious helping of butter, but oh well). The waiter for our table was very courteous and attentive, and quickly came back once we were ready to order. Even though it was a fairly busy morning, and there were plenty of other diners coming in and out, that didn't result in any delays or impacts on the dining experience. If anything, the only complaint that I would have with the restaurant is their chair selection - while modernist plastic chairs fit well with the setting, on wet or humid days like the day that we went, the chairs seemed to catch the moisture in the air from the door swinging open again and again, and your seat slowly got damp the longer that you were sitting there.

Yelp
I like what Frieda is doing. They have a noble mission. The spot is stylish, and staff are welcoming. Their shop has cool items for sale. I had breakfast, arriving shortly after they opened. Snagged an outdoor table since the dogs were with us. Glad I arrived early, since they quickly filled up. My Vietnamese iced coffee was different from what I expected, but smooth and delicious. The food was good. The dishes are not run-of-the-mill and have a little creative twist. I can't wait to go back and try the pastries.

Yelp
This is our go to spot in Philadelphia. The ambiance, the food, the staff are great. I always feel at home when i go to Freida. This place is a great addition to the neighborhood.
