In Defense of the ‘Boring’ Restaurant Sundae | Eater

"The author has a personal connection, having worked there in her teenage years, which informs a fondness for classic sundaes; she argues that a scoop of ice cream with a topping is rarely disappointing compared with more elaborate desserts and that sundaes can be complex, satisfying, and reliably enjoyable." - Amanda Kludt

I hadn’t been to Friendly’s in years, but I decided to stop in with my kids for lunch and some ice cream—and honestly, it was a fun throwback. The food was pretty standard diner fare: burgers, melts, fries. Nothing fancy, but it hit the spot. I ordered the SuperMelt and it came out hot and gooey, just like I remembered. The real reason we came, though, was the ice cream. And that did not disappoint. The Reese’s Pieces Sundae is still as over-the-top and delicious as ever, and my daughter loved her build-your-own sundae. The portions are big, so come hungry or be ready to share. Service was friendly, though a little slow—but it seemed like they were short-staffed, which is pretty common these days. Our waitress was sweet and checked in often. If you’re looking for a casual spot with a family-friendly vibe, especially if you’ve got kids or just want to relive some childhood memories, Friendly’s is a solid pick. Just don’t go in expecting gourmet food—it’s all about the nostalgia and the ice cream.

Google
We stopped by Friendly’s thinking it was Freddy’s because the logo looks really similar. Unfortunately, that was the best part of the experience. The service was okay, but the place was not clean — several tables hadn’t been bussed, and the overall vibe felt neglected. The food was just average. My Philly burger was decent, but the fries were cold, which was disappointing. We really wanted to like this place, but it missed the mark. Not somewhere we’d go out of our way to visit again.

Google
We had the pleasure of being served by Jeanne today at Friendly’s and we were so pleased by her attentiveness and pace of service. We had one very upset toddler with us and she ensured that he had a drink and his food out first which made the rest of our experience smoother! Friendly’s has always been a staple in my family and I’m so glad I can continue the tradition of visits with my own son.

Google
This is a rating based on what I expected Friendly’s to be. I didn’t come in expecting it to be a formal dinner, but more on along the line of Steak ‘n Shake. For that, it met expectations. The environment was clean and our waitress was attentive. There’s food we don’t eat, but there were a mix of options to choose from and no one had a lack of choices. It wasn’t too busy, but was steady. Prices were fair and they even have specials like the $4 kids meal with adult purchase on Tuesdays. I thought the fry baskets were pretty cute, and my daughter had fun making her own sundae with that option from the kids menu.

Google
Friendly's has been my favorite place to eat since I was a kid. The food is always good and the ice cream is even better! The servers are always so helpful and kind. Can't wait to go back!

Google
Went for the nostalgia, as the Friendly's in our area have been gone for a while. Only got dessert. Although the peanut butter sauce is slightly different, it still hit the spot. Kids enjoyed it too! Took a few minutes to get service, but after initiated, it was great!

Google
We were incredibly disappointed with our recent visit to Friendly’s in Orlando. Right from the start, we were greeted by a handwritten note taped to the door that read, “We prefer cash if possible.” It’s 2025, if a business isn’t equipped to handle credit cards properly, it needs to seriously reconsider its business model. Not only was the sign off-putting and unprofessional, but it also distracted us from noticing the other sign on the opposite door listing everything they were out of. Once seated, we quickly learned that the majority of the items we actually wanted were unavailable. Whoever is managing inventory clearly isn’t doing their job well. We ended up ordering meals we didn’t even want just to get through dinner and enjoy the real reason we came, the ice cream. But of course, the final blow: they were out of vanilla ice cream. VANILLA. The base of nearly all of their classic ice cream options. At that point, the entire experience was a letdown. Friendly’s used to be one of our favorite stops in Orlando, but after this visit, it’s hard to imagine coming back.

Google
Our family enjoyed the following entrees: chicken wings, All-American burger, and Reuben SuperMelt. The exception would be the Munchie Mania which had poor quantity and quality. Everyone enjoyed their dessert. The server did a very good job considering they appeared to be short staffed.

Yelp
Went last night after a long day at Disney. Wait wasn't too long! The host was also bussing tables, taking names and serving food. He was such a hard worker! When we were seated, our server Alicia (I could be spelling this wrong) was amazing! I don't say that often, but it's true. She was so attentive, kind and brought our whole table all the drinks we ask for as we were so thirsty from a hot day! Food was just like I remember! Good quality food at good prices! And the ice cream! Yumm!!! Lots of seating and a carry out station for food or ice cream! We will 100% go back, even if just for carry out when we are in Orlando.

Yelp
This place is so good! It's normally had good ambiance and they play nice music too, that fit the comforting theme of the restaurant. The service is great! Everyone is so nice!

Yelp
I always come here for the ice cream! Admittedly I've never had their regular food and that's ok! I have a lot of family from the eastern seaboard, and Friendly's has always been a staple for them! I always get a Jim Dandy since I don't get to go often. A Jim Dandy is a hand crafted sundae tailored to any and everything you could ever want! Service here is always friendly and fast! I hope this chain continues to thrive, and this location is an excellent reflection of the best in the Friendly's franchise!

Yelp
As a family we went to Friendly's when the kids were young, however ours no longer exists in town. So, when we saw the one in Orlando we had to go! It was a trip down memory lane with the kids meals and great food. The Cobb salad was tops! The service was superb and the meals came out fast. The ambiance is that of a 50s style diner, but not as decorated as others. Good dependable restaurant. Enjoy!

Yelp
Nostalgic and brought back sp many memories. Friendly's closed in NY by my location so I was excited when we found one in Orlando. I've cream was delicious. The food was good. Casual and relaxed restaurant. Service was a little slow.

Ray S.

Yelp
Not "Friendly" at all, the cashier was a greasy heroine addict that has the personality of a s*** sandwich and told us we couldn't eat the ice we just purchased there in the restaurant. There was 2 tables occupied and there was more than 50 tables empty. Its a typical HOT Orlando night and we were rudely escorted to the front door and the gutless Manager refused to address this me and told scary looking cashier to tell me it's company policy, like that means anything. I have visited Friendly's since 1972 and I will can see why they are on the verge of bankruptcy. Go to Freddy's, or Handel's, or Cold Stone. This place is an absolute no go. Disgusting!

Yelp
While Friendly's may be fondly remembered for their family friendly food and fun deserts, they current incarnation is more all over the place with a generic "American" menu, generally not great service and an odd problem of frequently being out of items. This location has really struggled since opening and while it is still an OK option in an area completely full of every chain restaurant known to man, nostalgia and not the food or service is why most will choose to return.

Yelp
If I could give no stars I would. Last night we tried going in for dinner. The manager told us he sat a big party so he would not seat another party for at least 30-40 minutes. The big party had a back section. Only 2 other tables had customers. At least 10 tables were waiting to be bussed. We left. Tonight we returned. There were only 8 tables with customers. It took over 20 minutes for an employee to come to the hostess stand. She announced there was going to be a 30-40 minutes wait. Once again tables were waiting to be bussed. This is a management issue. If you have 30 tables, you should have enough staff to be able to serve 30 tables. We will not be back.

Yelp
Came here for the nostalgia, the whole experience from the food to the service was just meh. Just average. I wanted the mini mozzarella sticks, but they were mostly breading and barely any cheese.

Yelp
I came here with a group of friends and it was a strange experience. The staff seemed very young and inexperienced. They started off by telling us what they were out of on the menu, which seemed to be about 1/3 of the options. We all ordered the combo meals which came with a drink and soup. I ordered the quesadilla and was pretty disappointed by the quality of it. I had also started with water and decided to opt for the combo and ordered a soda. The server seemed to forget about it until I reminded her when she came by with our soups. My brother ordered the club sandwich which seemed to be the better option. The soup was decent and the sundaes were great. Overall a mediocre experience.

Yelp
Food was pretty good for being a diner. I ordered chicken tenders which came with fries and coleslaw. The chicken was crispy, the fries were decent, and the coleslaw was good. My rating is solely on the food; the staff were fake friendly and personally I think the colors are ugly inside. The old decor was a lot nicer.

Yelp
Growing up in MA Friendly's was a staple in our town. The food was good but the service was one of the worst experiences. I know they're new and may have first time servers but to wait 20 mins after being seated then never getting a drink refill because she never came until our food was done was insane. The managers I spoke with were great and they promised it would be a better time if I come back. As much as I want to return I feel like spending my $ elsewhere may be the best option. I'll try again in a few months.

Yelp
So excited they are open. They are still in a soft opening so we kept that in mind as we dined so we were extremely patient and understanding but will share our experience. Even though there were some challenges we will return as we know they are all still learning. We went for breakfast. We were greeted and sat as soon as we walked in the door. It was pretty empty just two other tables and a ton of staff. All of which were amazing btw they do a great job helping each other out and are super friendly. Everything is brand new and super clean of course. Breakfast menu is small but plenty to choose from at great prices. Kids menu is incredible. Great variety and of course the value is fantastic. Service was slow. Our food took longer than normal and it was cold. But like I said above they are all still learning. Items were forgotten but as soon as we said something our server went to get them. It was odd two of us ordered a side of breakfast potatoes and my portion was huge and my sister's was tiny. We will definitely be back to give lunch/dinner a try and we know in a few more weeks everything will be amazing.

Yelp
Awesome service, food, ice cream and they sat all 12 of us together! Very accommodating and friendly staff! Restaurant was clean also!

Merrilee H.

Yelp
John V was fantastic. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived but despite being super busy a John was friendly and personable taking time to chat while tending to all of his tables. As always the food was fantastic. We always stop in when we are in the area.

Yelp

Yelp
The service at this location might be the worst out of any restaurant I've been in my life. Got to-go ice cream and watched them make other ice creams for the restaurant for 8 minutes before they made ours. We ordered vanilla chocolate chip ice cream, and they tried handing us vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips on top, which is incorrect and different ice cream chips than what I ordered. When I asked them to remake it with the correct flavor, only then did they tell us "we're out of that flavor we can give you a different flavor" and the woman manager was so incredibly rude. If she had told us before ordering, my choice would have been different. How awful guest service do you have to be to give someone a different order and not inform them you're out of stock. With this being my third visit and also ironically the third time they've messed up my ice cream order. To top things off, they now have a 2.5% added service charge if you use your credit card on any order - that's wild. 3 strikes, you're out!!! Can't say you'll see me here again and I'm looking forward to spreading to my friends and family how awful this location is.

Yelp
I was thrilled to hear about friendlys opening up in Florida. But I wish they kept it closed so my childhood memory was a positive one. I first came here when they first opened it was bad service and mediocre food. Months go by I wanted to give it another try and we were sat for 25 minutes with no service! It was so bad we ended up leaving and going elsewhere. As we were leaving one of the servers approached the table and said "how's it going guys" I then said we are all leaving and I get the response have a good one So if you have to pick between being hungry or going here Just be hungry!

Yelp
Menu is extensive with several Senior options. I loved the French fries and tuna supermelt. Service was outstanding and the dining room was very nice.

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
Alicia was a fantastic server, cobb salad was fresh and delicious, my husband enjoyed his classic burger too .Of course we had ice cream and brought home a pint of my fav too.

George R.

Yelp
Service here at this location is horrible. Lack of care/attention to customers walking in. Every employee tried their hardest to not look at anybody coming in the front door. We waited for 15 minutes before we were even asked for our name (there was nobody in front of us). Wasn't until an employee (Tony) ran in the door to clock in and he was the only one that assisted anybody waiting or in line. Tony got things moving and people seated! Tony is the only part of this trip that saved this experience. ONLY REASON IM LEAVING ONE STAR IF FOR TONY'S EFFORTS!

Yelp
We go to Friendly's every time we come to Orlando. However, this was our first time at this new location. When we walked in one of the waitresses said, I will be with you in a minute. She then walked around and obviously ignored us for literally 15 minutes. She actually stood behind the counter and would sneak glances at us to see if we were still there. They were not busy so we do not have any idea why they had no desire to see us. We finally gave up and walked out. We will not be back. If you want rudeness and being ignored, this is the restaurant for you.

Yelp
Haven't been to Friendly's in many years. This one just opened 2 weeks ago. Stopped in for an ice cream treat, had the peanut butter and fudge sundae, holy smokes, delicious!! Jennie, originally from Massachusetts, provided great service.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
There is nothing good to say about this location. Waited 15 minutes to be seated with only 2 other people in the restaurant. Staff was more worried about having a cigarette than doing their job. All were out side when we arrived and seem shocked that they had people in the restaurant. When the lady finally seated us she proceeded to scream at another employee about who section it was. We waited for another 15 minutes without anyone coming by to start our order. Maybe they just need to close this location like they did the rest of them in the country.

Yelp
Amazing! Brand new and super clean. My food was delicious!!! Love the quesadillas! I'd ick this one over international for sure!

Yelp
Do not go here!!! The photo with the green ice cream is what the dessert is supposed to look like... we received the pink one... thoughts

Yelp
When we visited Florida, my son was so excited to see that Friendly's was open. They closed all the Friendly's in New York and so we can't find any anymore and this is where he used to go when he was a little boy. The one on Vineland Avenue is spectacular. Very big. Service is great. And the food was very good. A throwback to when they were kids. At least in the opinion of my son and his girlfriend.

Randall G.

Yelp
Their flyer that just came in the mail says they are "located in Disney Springs". If you call this number it's no longer in service. If you search for this address you get a completely different phone number (same address) and it's no where near Disney Springs. I called and they denied the flyer and said someone else must have printed it

Kristen G.

Yelp
We had 4 different sundaes -,great all round! So excited to see a brand new Friendly's! Our server, Gill, was awesome! The restaurant was very busy and everyone was working hard! We love the brand new clean/sleek ambiance of a diner!! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I have to say, I've been so looking forward to the new Friendly's to open and it's nice and clean inside. the food was even great but the service was horrible therefore I won't be going back. When I say horrible, I mean it took the server nearly 10x minutes to take our drink order when the restaurant was only 20% full. we ordered our food at the same time we ordered our drinks and the food came out first. we sat there watching the server talking on her phone, drinking soda and talking with the two other servers at the wait station and obviously their conversation was more important than our food and drinks. additionally our server barely spoke English and she screwed up our order and never refilled our drinks. sad

Monica H.

Yelp
Good, service, friendly staff, excellent prices, varied menu. From the moment we entered, everyone was friendly and professional. We will return soon

Alekz A.

Yelp
Great food, good service and ice cream!!!! Lots of deals and savings. The place is huge and fries are good really captures the diner atmosphere.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Terrible. The waitress gave us a long list of everything they were out of. We ordered & she returned & said they were out of those items also. I ordered a BLT and it was horrific . The bacon was barely cooked microwave shelf stable bacon. The tomato was unripe. I ordered onion rings. The waitress served me a plate of fried onion straws instead. The menu showed proper onion rings not these. She said they did not have that kind. They were also out of the ice cream we ordered. It makes no sense for the restaurant to be out of all of these food items. The food is worse than mediocre. I should have gone to Dennys instead. They also charge a fee if you use a credit card.

Dan M.

Yelp
Went to try the new location in search of nostalgia (I'm originally from NE where Friendly's was a childhood favorite). I remember a lot from those days, mainly that it was a hit or miss experience but we always kept going back. Well this visit was great! If you're like me and looking for nostalgia, hopefully you'll get to sit in John's section, he gets it. I felt no shame asking for a cone head sundae at the end of my meal lol. Let's be honest, if you're a true fan, do you really go for the food and service? For me I think it was always about the vibe when I was a kid. The food and service here met my expectations. I expected to wait long for my food (because that can sometimes be how it goes) but I didn't and John was great.

Dominique T.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice. The service was subpar. We did a pick up order and when we picked up our order half of our sides were missing. I specifically asked for no bacon on my quesadillas and there was A LOT of bacon as if they heard "extra bacon". They did not put our condiments that CAME WITH the order in our bag. There were a lot of issues. I would not recommend coming here unless it is the ONLY thing open.

Liz ..

Yelp
Came in at 9pm on a Tuesday for a table for 2. The Host seems young and inexperienced with the menu and business starting by saying to us "I didn't even see you walk in... I hate to be the bad guy" and read off all the items they were out of. Including the items on the menu that were "Brand New!" or seemed to have made a comeback. As we were being seated he asked if we wanted the table in the back or if we wanted him to clean the table he was standing next to. We opted for the table in the back. Seemed like there were only two servers for the entire building. Our server was seen taking our order (back of the room) and orders from people in the very front of the room by the window. After placing our order about 25 people came in for ice cream and the waiter came over and told us and 3 other tables that if we "wanted ice cream it would be an hour" which a large table was obviously annoyed and respectfully verbal about it because they had finished their meal and were ready for their dessert. They ended up paying the check and leaving. Waited about 25 minutes for our meal. Should've only been 10-15 minutes because we watched our order (the only one the kitchen had at the time) sit in the window for over 10 minutes with the kitchen spamming the bell for someone to grab it. Mind you, there were 5 workers doing ice cream and two people on the floor serving probably 40-45 people in the restaurant. Once the food came the host had walked over to the tables and asked if we needed anything. I asked if they had ketchup and he paused, looked around, and said "ummm... I'm not surreee" and the table next to us handed us theirs. Left without our included sundae due to not wanting to wait an hour and watch the people walking in just for ice cream get served immediately. Won't be coming back until the staffing seems under control by management and the servers aren't hustling without help.

KC D.

Yelp
Thank goodness Friendly's opened here. Nice and busy and that is good. We swing by and pick up pre-packed ice cream in freezer near front door, pay and we''re on the road with it in a cooler to enjoy at home. Better quality ice cream than anything Publix sells. Lots of free parking and easy to get to. Will return often!

Ruth C.

Yelp
I have no words to describe the train wreck of events that we witnessed tonight. We knew this Friendly's opened a few weeks ago and were eager to try it out. Upon arriving at 8:00 pm, we were told that the wait would be 35 minutes for a party of three... no problem. We observed about 6 empty tables, but there was a large party of 21, and only about 4 servers total in the floor. The "host" who took our name would regularly go to wait tables or run orders, leading to many people walking in and ultimately walking out because no one was there to greet them or take their names. We were finally seated after 45 minutes (and only because two other parties left because they were tired of waiting). We watched one server deal with the party of 21 for the entire time. After being seated for 15 minutes, a server stopped by and asked if we had been helped yet. We said no, so she took our order. We just ordered ice cream. It has now been 26 minutes since our order was taken, and we still haven't received our ice cream, yet a party seated after us has already received theirs. The manager appears to have no problem berating his servers, but we haven't observed him helping in any other way. The lack of organization and direction in this restaurant tonight is simply appalling and doesn't bode well for them to succeed in this tourist-heavy corridor. Servers don't seem to know their tables, orders do not come out in a timely fashion and management just walks around without addressing any of the problems that are happening in front of his face. Lots of work needs to be done to bring this Friendly's up to par. It took 37 minutes to get two large sundaes and one Jim Dandy. And they were out of chocolate chip ice cream, so we got vanilla with mini chocolate chips sprinkled on top, and they were also out of strawberry topping, but that was never mentioned until we saw there was none in the sundae and we asked about it. Oh - and no water or beverages were offered until someone came by to remove our empty sundae glasses.

Lisa L.

Yelp
Very clean inside. Got 3 small sundaes and they were all delicious! Ordered online and picked up inside. Recommend!

Yelp
Can't wait for you to open!!! Love Friendly's!!! I probably shouldn't put this here. Haven't figured out how to delete. Sorry.

Cyle Y.

Yelp
Go to sit down for lunch, not a word from any staff member after sitting down for 20 minutes. Bigger table comes in, they sit down, immediate service. So what, a bigger implied tip (because they're a bigger table) gets you immediate service? Was excited because this opened a few minutes from my house. Now it's take out only from here.

Meghan H.

Yelp
So nostalgic to stop and eat here today! The location is just getting started but food was good and refreshing.

Yelp
A co-worker told me about this location opening. We had planned to go together but she was unable to make it so i had a friend visiting from out of town and decided to stop on the way to outlets. Very disappointed overall. I know it's new but the staff obviously weren't trained properly. Our server didn't know that a turkey club came on white toast. (She said she would have to check) I assured her that it did. After waiting for 40 minutes, the chicken fajita quesadilla arrived and was bland and no fajita to it. It used to be made with a fajita marinade..this obvioulsy was not and being honest it appeared to be some sort of pulled chicken. Then after another 25 minutes we recieved our food.. The toast on the club was burned and hard as rock..it literally broke apart when trying to eat it. The "fishamajig" appeared to have a sandwich press on it..very flat and hard. I was also at a loss when we were told that we were being charged for 2 chicken quesadillas even tho one was only cheese. Again, i get that it's new but the owner should have waited until the staff (including mgmt.) were properly trained. After almost 90 minutes and 73.00 later left feeling disappointed. I shared my experience with my co-worker and told here we will still try it out..in about 6 months.
