"Las Piedrecitas in Hialeah is as inviting as the children’s section of your neighborhood public library. Everyone here smiles at you—which isn’t always the case in a busy fritanga—and it’s relaxed enough that you can patiently choose the specific strips of carne asada you want (the shorter strips are juicier and easier to chew). Take the heavy container to one of the tables and enjoy the quiet of solo diners around you doing the same. Your fritanga here should also be paired with their rosa de jamaica that’s sour and sweet. For dessert, head to the freezer for a little baggie of their housemade ice cream with flavors like nancite, tres leches, and coconut. "Hialeah is certainly the place to find stellar Cuban food in Miami, but as many have realized over the years, La Ciudad que Progresa is a lot more diverse than that. Case in point: there are actually quite a few Nicaraguan restaurants in the area, including Las Piedrecitas, which we like for its dependably good food and casual vibe. On top of the typical fritanga steam counter, there is also a bakery case where you can pick up traditional cookies and pastries, like picos—triangular sweet breads stuffed with cheese and other fillings. There’s also a cold case featuring a variety of Nicaraguan cheeses and cultured dairy products.
