The Best Bars on New Orleans’s Bourbon Street | Eater New Orleans

"Fritzel’s is known for being the oldest operating jazz venue in New Orleans, a distinction that makes it worth a visit all on its own. Beyond that, Fritzel’s offers a departure from other live music bars that dominate the strip, with traditional Dixieland jazz that starts at 12:30 p.m. daily and nightly swing jazz shows curated by music director Kevin Clark. It tends to skew towards a more mature crowd, with the option to take a seat in the (crowded) bleacher-style seating after a long day on your feet exploring the Quarter." - Beth D’Addono

14 Essential French Quarter Bars

"Nestled between the party hardy bars and strips clubs of Bourbon, Fritzel’s remains in a bohemian class all its own. While mostly known for its nightly swing jazz shows, Fritzel’s offers a respite from the cover bands that otherwise dominate the strip. This style of Dixieland jazz skews towards a more mature crowd, so those looking for edge should head elsewhere. Decent beer selection and full bar. FYI: If you’re looking to sit, a hostess will direct you. Be forewarned, the club is small and often packed and the bleacher style seating isn’t cush." - Eater Staff

We went to Fritzels 3 of our 5 nights staying in New Orleans. It's a fantastic place to go to watch live music. All 3 bands we saw were amazing. Our favourite was Richard Piano Scott and his band. Such a great voice and amazing stage presence 🎹🎷🎺🥁

Caterina Bassano

Google
We went twice during our visit to New Orleans and loved the atmosphere and the classic live jazz. Very talented musicians! The drinks aren't cheap but the entertainment is class and the place is beautiful. I think they have live jazz every night (not the same band, the musicians rotate) we were there on a Sunday and a Monday and it was great. There is a sign near the stage that says no dancing which was a bit disappointing lol, so we just moved on to other bars in the area when we were ready for a bit of a boogie.

Google
Best place for music on Bourbon. While others are playing cover bands and dialing pianos are playing Mikey Cyrus, Fritzel’s has stayed true to its roots. Fantastic energy. Great staff. Amazing music. This would be my go to spot after 7:30 on Bourbon. My favorite bar in NOLA

AC Liles III

Google
Fantastic live jazz performance! The service was excellent. Seating is limited, and with such a great band, the space felt a bit tight. I did not inquire about food.

Bob Drew

Google
Popped in for drinks and an hour of jazz after dinner elsewhere. Both bands were great! Strong leads with good soloing around the band. Seating is tight, so you’ll probably share a table if you can get one. Fun atmosphere and decor. Service was fairly quick. Recommend a stop.👍🏻

Eliza Nix

Google
Can be very crowded, so be prepared to sit with strangers or stand! Drink prices are steep, but you’re either paying a cover or buying drinks to enjoy the live music. A great atmosphere, everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time!

Google
This is a great little spot. The music is always terrific. No cover charges and good drinks. We go here every time we come to town.

Google
You come to Fritzel’s for jazz music and drinks, and the band we saw and heard was incredibly talented and fun! Tight quarters, get there early evening and grab a bench! Super fun - could have stayed here for hours. A must visit when in the French Quarter!

Yelp
At Fritzel's it's all about the music! Drinks are good and on the strong side, vibe is German with a touch of Creole and service is adequate. And honestly, none of that stuff matters once the music starts. Fritzel's is one of the music beacons in Nawlins, when many other places have switched to rock, hip hop or karaoke (wtf??) Fritzel's is one of the few places where you still find traditional jazz in all its varieties. Thank you Fritzel's!!

Yelp
My wife and I vacationed in the French Quarter this week and hung out at Fritzel's quite a bit. On Tuesday we spent the evening a bit but didn't get the best seating since we arrived a bit late and underestimated how popular of a spot it is. On Wednesday we got there earlier and got excellent seats. We ended up staying through two sets of one band and three sets of another. We were there from 5 o'clock to midnight and consumed several hundred dollars worth of Sazeracs. Their drinks are made right and are made strong. The blonde lady, Katerina I think her name was, was super friendly and mixed the best, strongest Sazeracs. I was also impressed on how well she handled herself when this jerk of a patron did not want to buy a drink or pay the ten dollar cover. This place has quality bands all day long and a comfortable environment. They also don't jack up their prices or mandate a cover charge. An ask of at least consuming one drink is completely fair. Of course we consumed much, much more and I had also negotiated a tshirt with a male bartender at the end of the night based on how much we spent but we were both a bit sloshed so I completely forgot about the shirt. We did also support the first band on Wednesday by buying a CD and tipping a bit more. These are talented musicians who deserve our support. But going back to Fritzels. True, they are not the only jazz bar. You have Bourbon O's across the street that was also great but it lacked the ambience that Fritzel nails down. In a time where crappy hip hop is taking over the French Quarter it's great to see that there are a handful of lounges that are clinging on to traditional NOLA jazz. We plan on supporting them. So when you are in the French Quarter on bourbon street, pay Fritzels a visit. You will be happy you did. We can't wait to go back. Thank you for the excellent experience.

Yelp
There is nothing better than this. Super full on every night. It's a beautiful reprieve from the boubon crazy. Trombones and trumpets oh my.

Yelp
I definitely had an unforgettable experience here with hubby! I just love that this live jazz bar is in a historic 1831 building, as soon as you walk in you hear the amazing jazz and see people just enjoying the ambiance. We stopped by about 3 times and I can't wait to return here! So if you want a memorable night and just want to enjoy life, then you definitely need to stop by, grab a cold Yeungling & enjoy the back in time vibe!! This is a must while visiting NOLA!!

Yelp
This establishment is a must visit , for their great customer service even though they get super packed. We were fortunate to get seating right on the side of the band with no one sitting in front of us. The waitress was very attentive and we kept her busy bringing us beers. The music is great and everyone is having a hella good time enjoying life, I know I did. When we go back to New Orleans again I know we will revisit this place again.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything about this experience was great. The music was some of the best and the atmosphere was amazing. Got to see 2 groups perform on a Thursday night, so the bar eventually got more crowded around 8-8:30 pm. Drinks were fine, nothing too crazy. I could've sat that for hours and just watched the musicians do what they do best! Such a delight. Definitely recommend this gem.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved Fritzel's! My husband and I visiting two night in a row and were treated to wonderful jazz/blues music. It's a fun relaxed atmosphere inside with everyone enjoying the music. Cover charge is a drink and the servers were quick! I had the Louisiana Lady a lemon drop both nights and it was cold and refreshing. The bands were great both nights with talented musicians. Great place for live music!
google avatar

Miley D.

Yelp
We came towards the end of the night. It was a Sunday night and it was packed!!! The live jazz band playing was incredible! So good! They quickly served my friends and I - we had a great time! The energy was amazing - it didn't bother us that it was standing room only! We will definitely come again!

Yelp
Such a cozy little spot, with soul. We had a tough time tearing ourselves away from this place. Bands roll through, with different sets. All unique, with their own character. They are not afraid to engage the crowd & take requests. The sound of a trumpet lured us in. The singers voice was deep and soulful. Next up was a magical trio of an incredible banjo player, a youthful double bass that played the strings like a tomcat, and a jazz drummer that was memorizing. The loo (has artful character of it's own) is in the rear, through a beautiful and cozy courtyard. We saw a large figure in a magicians coat with a handlebar mustache disappear into that courtyard, never to return. Where he went, we may never know. The drinks were strong. The bartender was slammed but held his own. Bonus: Someone brought a real live cat in a stroller because: "It loves jazz music." I love you New Orleans.

Yelp
If it weren't for the sullen employees, this would no doubt be a 5 star! Hopped on in on Monday night after dinner and this was was jammin'! What amazing talent and such a great vibe! This place was so much fun, but getting a seat is very difficult... although we didn't have a terribly long wait, we did find seats up against the wall, although right up against the coffee maker... luckily within a few songs, some folks next to us left and we could slide in a bit. They do require a drink purchase and the bathroom is out back in an alley, partially outside to get there... But the music!!! Amazing! That's it!

Yelp
Fritzel's on Bourbon Street. Went for a Hurricane stayed for the Jazz music. Originally ordered hurricane to go, but stayed for the music. The piano man that was playing sounded so good like Randy Newman. No food was ordered at this location. I can't wait to check them out next time I go to NOLA.

Shantana A.

Yelp
Two domestic draft Beers in plastic cups=$22 Jazz Band=priceless You are able to support the band by purchasing an Album/CD or tipping into their bucket as they walk around between sets. Bartender friendly and efficient
google avatar

Alicia W.

Yelp
Small spot located off of bourbon. You need to get here early, or be patient and wait for seats to open up. The music here is great, but the drinks however, not so much. My husband said it was the worst old fashioned he'd ever had. I had a cosmo and shared the same sentiments. Perhaps it was the bartender that evening. I'd give it another chance solely for the music.
google avatar

Constance L.

Yelp
Phenomenal band/ambiance and mostly great staff! We first came in the afternoon when the bar was mostly empty. The bartender came over immediately to get our drink orders and explained we had to either order drinks or pay a cover. Of the four of us, two of us ordered cocktails and my friend who doesn't drink alcohol opted for a ginger beer (which was mostly a cup full of ice and we were charged about $7 for). For my last friend who was still trying to decide on a drink, the bartender hovered over her, pressing her to buy or pay the cover until my friend just decided to leave. Left a bad taste in my mouth when my friend was clearly intending to order and the bar was 90% empty. We returned the next evening though when the main band was playing and that was a much more pleasant and lively experience.
google avatar

Justina L.

Yelp
Amazing, cozy jazz bar on bourbon. Good priced drinks that don't break the bank. No cover charge also. There's a band 7 days a week and they are great! If you like traditional jazz this should be a place you check out. The band interacts with the crowd and it was a lot of fun.
google avatar

Deniece W.

Yelp
This is one of the more chill spots on Bourbon St. The crowd was older, but still fun and tipsy. We came for the live music and absinthe. Both were pretty good. As stated in previous reviews, service was ok. Not bad, just very low energy when compared with other Bourbon St bars. And the bathroom is pretty gross.
google avatar

Kaysha R.

Yelp
This cozy little nook, tucked away off Bourbon street isn't very big but makes full use of its space. You are greeted immediately upon entry and guided to a space where your group will fit, including sharing benches and areas with other folx. I was solo, so I ended up sat right up front next to another couple on a bench by the stage, on a Wednesday night. They save you the awkward searching and asking to share seating, and keep each seat full so everyone has a chance to experience the band. Plenty of cocktails and prompt service, but I went for the house wine, since I enjoy wine with my jazz. The band was phenomenal! It well earns its badge as one of the best places to listen to live jazz that I've ever been to.
google avatar

Ron V.

Yelp
Bartender was friendly and pretty much catered just to is. Live jazz band. Great for an adult crowd
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
We walked by and heard real good music. Cozy nice place. We will be back. Had a good time.
google avatar

Yelp
We've popped in here twice now, and it is a hidden gem. For the most part, Bourbon Street is a must-avoid area, but as you get farther downriver, options start to brighten. They have a very small, crowded space, but the music is legit Trad Jazz. The drinks are reasonably priced, so definitely worth going in, sharing a table with strangers, and making new "friends."
google avatar

Dina G.

Yelp
Stopped in for a set of live jazz and just loved the vibe and ambience. Great music. It was packed so you may have to wait a bit or until set ends. Small location but didn't hinder the experience...just had to be cozy. Drinks were weak but ambience made up for it.
google avatar

Wanda G.

Yelp
Live jazz in a cozy pub bar. We had the Bloody Mary and a old fashioned and had a good time
google avatar

Christy C.

Yelp
Fritzel's house band was amazing! Some of the best traditional New Orleans jazz we heard while in the city. It's a small bar, but they know how to "seat" a lot of people in a tight space. Bartenders were kind and made a pretty good Sazerac. Go for the music!!!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Fritzel's came highly recommended for great live jazz music and it didn't disappoint. We arrived on a Saturday night around 7:30 PM. The first band playing had started at 6 PM and went until 9 PM for the next band. Both were great, but I enjoyed the second band more. No cover, but they will pass around a jar for cash or venmo tips and ask that you at least buy a drink. An IPA beer and well tequila soda will run about $22. Loved the festive Christmas decor and all the staff was super nice. Oh and I found a funny sticker in the restroom that made me laugh ha
google avatar

Hannah A.

Yelp
Wow, what a place. In the thick of all the loud debauchery of Bourbon Street, Fritzels is a safe haven of great drinks, wonderful ambience, and fantastic music. I highly recommend coming early to get a seat close to the stage and then posting up all night. The drinks are strong and the rhythm is stronger!

Yelp
Fritzel's Jazz Bar is an iconic establishment located in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana. As a lover/singer of jazz music, I absolutely love this bar! Upon entering the dimly lit bar, I was immediately transported to a different era. The vintage decor, low ceilings, and exposed brick walls created a cozy and intimate atmosphere that was perfect for enjoying live jazz performances. Speaking of which, the music at Fritzel's is absolutely outstanding. The house band is made up of talented musicians who clearly have a passion for jazz. Their performances were lively, engaging, and had me tapping my feet and nodding my head along with the rhythm. The day visiting musicians are of the highest quality! To accompany the music, Fritzel's offers a solid selection of drinks and food. The bar offers a variety of classic cocktails and a rotating selection of local beers. I don't recommend their house daiquiri, but I'd totally recommend basics like a vodka-soda, bourbon-ginger, or if so-inclined one of their many Jager cocktails. Fritzel's Jazz Bar is a must-visit for anyone who loves jazz music and wants to experience the magic of New Orleans. The atmosphere, music, food, and service are all exceptional and make for an unforgettable evening. I highly recommend Fritzel's and can't wait to return on my next trip to New Orleans.

Yelp
Last music (and drink) stop of the trip, and it was a good one! Crowded and loud, but oh so fun! Would definitely return for other live music acts and a cocktail (or three).

Yelp
Fritzel's European Jazz Pub has a great location smack dab in the midst of Bourbon Street. Back in 2019 a friend introduced us to this place and I've always wanted to come back ever since. (+) GREAT live Jazz music! Just a 1 drink minimum per set to hear some great live Jazz music! I was especially impressed with the trumpet player! She was fantastic! (+) Drinks were strong and tasty! A Hurricane and a bottle of beer ran me $22 plus tip, for what it's worth. (+) We were able to secure good seats near the stage. I really enjoyed having my drink and taking in the music. :) I will say the constant back and forth foot traffic from the front of the club to back area by the restrooms was pretty distracting and annoying though. (+) The band that was playing while I was there is the Twisty River Band and I was so impressed with their live performance I bought a CD and have been enjoying it while driving to work since coming home! Check them out when you have the chance! It's a tiny and cozy club. All of the lights, pictures, and other decor really sets a warm and cozy atmosphere. I really enjoyed my time here...again! 5 stars.

Yelp
Fritzel's jazz pub stood out for me from so many other Jazz clubs on Bourbon street because it took you to a different place more intimate and personable apart from the craziness outside. I really appreciated the musicianship of the band that was playing the night we were there and the finesse and the complexity of the music they performed. Definitely a must when you're visiting NOLA.
google avatar

Esther M.

Yelp
This was a really fun little jazz bar. It's tight in there, and if it's any kind of hot outside, it's hot inside. They have fans but little air conditioning. I didn't even mind, had a cold beverage, and enjoyed the lovely music. Staff was so understanding, accommodating and friendly. I was surprised they actual served vs just stand around at the bar. In the heart of the French Quarter on Bourbon Street and just a quick walk from many hotels.
google avatar

Steve Z.

Yelp
Awesome place for real live jazz music - one of the oldest places here in NOLA. Stop in for some seriously great music.
google avatar

Manjil S.

Yelp
Everything was great. Drinks were as expected from a local jazz bar but the entire vibe ambience and everything was superb
google avatar

Lucio R.

Yelp
Best music bar in New Orleans. It is our second time here and it's always been amazing.
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
Grabbed a quick drink while the band was playing, which they were phenomenal, less noisy than the surrounding bars, lots of german signs and memorabilia, not so much seating spaces but we manage to secure a small bench
google avatar

Embra B.

Yelp
Great music and vibes . We visited to check out one of the live jazz shows. Live show was great. Have a drink of choice and enjoy!

Yelp
Our friend had never been to New Orleans and we wanted to take him to a jazz club. This place has a one drink minimum or a $10 cover charge. It's small and intimate but it's not stuffy. We were able to get in and sit very close to the band. The music was amazing. The drinks were OK, but we're not there for the drinks. Prices were reasonable for a jazz club. Music was fantastic, the energy was high, and everyone was super friendly. I highly recommend going here on your next trip to New Orleans.

Yelp
SERVICE: 3 FOOD QUALITY: N/A DRINK QUALITY: 3 ORDER TIME: 5 AESTHETICS: 5 NOISE LEVEL: 5 MENU SELECTION: 4 OVERALL EXPERIENCE: 4.17 A must go if you're In New Orleans, and want authentic local jazz. Our music experience was amazing. Everything else is nothing special. Old tavern bar that is way too small for the crowds they acquire. If you want to sit, and watch make sure to show up early, and have someone stand around waiting for a table. We just stood in the back and watched. Was still worth it for us. Huge jazz fans, and standing is just as good as sitting for us. Due to the small bar and loud jazz you don't really get any service, but the bartenders are quick and seem to really enjoy their jobs. Overall, great experience. We wound up going back multiple times, during our vacation, once we figured out timing and crowds.

Yelp
Great jazz pub! My boyfriend and I stopped in for a drink and to listen to some tunes. Music was wonderful and drinks were strong! The way we like it. Definitely a great atmosphere. We enjoyed our time here. At 5pm we went upstairs...IYKYK...trust me. Cheers!

Yelp
Definitely come here when you're on Bourbon St! This was exactly what we were looking for: a casual jazz spot with drinks that doesn't require cover or an advance ticket purchase, where you can just chill with your drink and enjoy some good music! They advertise themselves as having live jazz every night, which is rare since a lot of the other jazz clubs we looked into were closed earlier in the week. My friend and I dropped by on a Tuesday night around 9:30, and it was almost full. There were a handful of seats available near the stage and that was it. It's a small place, with half of the room more like a bar with small tables and the other half of the room like a small concert venue, with a stage and benches. Seats will free up occasionally as folks finish their drinks and leave. They have a decent cocktail menu. My friend and I both tried the Hurricane ($12), which we had read online was a cocktail invented in New Orleans. It was good and very sweet, if that's your preference for cocktails as it is mine. Keep in mind the drinks here are served very casually in plastic cups; it's not a fancy cocktail spot by any means. The live jazz was fantastic. The band composed of 5 men who played the trumpet, clarinet, piano, drums, and bass. I'm no jazz expert. In fact, I really don't listen to jazz very often, but I loved the whole atmosphere and the fun vibes that the band brought to the venue. We enjoyed it so much we stayed there for almost 1.5 hours!

Yelp
We had SUCH A GOOD TIME at fritzel's jazz pub! I'm not sure what makes jazz European and it's a learning experience for me that jazz can even be a European thing to begin with but you know what they say about learning something new everyday. It's a small place but we were lucky enough that people started to leave as soon as we arrived so we quickly scored 2 seats at the bar. Speaking of the bar, this one does NOT fuck around. Drinks are very strong and give you your money's worth. Because the place is so small, the audience is essentially in the face of the musicians. Unlike other places on Bourbon St, the volume is appropriate or, at least, not at a hazardous level. The following day when we were walking around during afternoon hours, this place still had live music! Such a cool place to stop by if you're interested in experiencing some live jazz while in NOLA.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a fun time here! The jazz band was fantastic and ensured a good time. The decor and setting are cute and cozy on an otherwise crazy Bourbon street. Service is prompt. The old fashioned hit the spot for my partner.

Yelp
I can't believe that I haven't left a review yet, I've been here several times over the last decade. It's always a great time, great live music. They have a rotation of different jazz bands. They really pack people in, I think you may have to purchase a drink to sit and enjoy the music, not sure since we would do that anyway. This quaint bar and music venue is right on Bourbon St and seems a world away when you're inside. Typical cocktail prices, $12 and up. It's worth it for the entertainment, don't forget to tip them!

Yelp
Want good Jazz? Want a chill environment? Then look no further... Yes, Fritzels says "European Jazz Pub"... but old Man Fritzel only pulls in the best musicians New Orleans has to offer... How'd I stumble on this whole in the wall hot spot? My oldest friend is the saxophone & clarinet player front and center. But don't just take it from me... a crowd doesn't lie. You'll want to show up early to make sure you get yourself a seat as the place's reputation precedes itself beyond its capacity & you won't want to be left out in the humidity... Enjoy!

The BEST and a MUST visit jazz club on Bourbon Street. Stopped by this gem of a place on my first night in NOLA and did not regret it at all. Infact since it was a week night and we did enter early, there was no cover charge or drinks minimum. However, we ordered the Hurricane and their Berlin Mule and the drinks complimented the amazing live music atmosphere and it was a great night. The place could get crowded as the night goes by. We were lucky to grab a place close to the band and get mesmerized by their performance. I cannot recommend this place enough. Every time I come to NOLA I will visit this place. Loved the vibe here.

Yelp
Seems like a great place. Wish we hadn't blown our money on the weird vampire place upstairs. We came down and got to see about ten minutes of good jazz before leaving bc we didn't have any money left for the one drink minimum.

Yelp
It's 11:20 and I'm craving a cocktail. Saw a sign that said $6 Hurricanes, so of course I went in. Nice little bar, got attended quickly. The bartender made our drinks within 2 mins of ordering. And said "let me know if they are too strong haha". I love New Orleans. The drink was delicious. It was strong but enough to still taste fruity. I would go to this place again. Currently drinking this by the Mississippi River, amazing ambiance.

Yelp
Amazing music! Love Lee Plink Floyd! He is a great banjo player and I felt lucky to get to know him by walking into this bar.
