Where to Eat Ice Cream in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"Housed in a converted train caboose near antiques row in historic downtown Chamblee, Frosty Caboose is where to head for old-school ice cream cones and sundaes with lots of toppings. Order at the walk-up window and find a seat in the shade on one of the benches." - Eater Staff

The Coal Train was a fantastic pick for any chocolate lover. It was rich, had varied textures, and felt like a truly classic ice cream parlor sundae. The portions at Frosty Caboose are big, making it a great value. Beyond the ice cream, the atmosphere of Frosty Caboose is a big part of its appeal. The novelty of ordering from a caboose, along with the occasional rumble of a passing train, creates a fun and engaging environment, especially for families and train fans. While there's no indoor seating, the outdoor picnic-style setup encourages you to enjoy your treat in the open air. Frosty Caboose's Coal Train ice cream is a highly recommended treat for anyone craving a classic, indulgent chocolate sundae. The mix of rich chocolate ice cream, delightful cookie crunch, and warm fudge makes for a harmonious and satisfying experience. Combined with the unique, train-themed setting, it's a place that offers more than just dessert – it offers a memorable outing. I'd happily take "The Coal Train" again!

Google
Tucked away in Chamblee. The caboose has several flavors. The ice cream is smooth and creamy. No indoor seating. A popular place so prepare to wait in line for several minutes. It’s worth the wait.

We ate here on a mid July evening right after a storm. The salted caramel and the cotton candy were both yummy. Had a double rainbow 🌈 to view while we ate.

The woman was a bit impatient with my friend with explaining things, but customer service was good. Line was definitely long. Wouldn’t come back here again, but it was worth the wait to try something new. The flavor I tried wasn’t the best, but my friends liked their ice cream.

Google
Frosty Caboose offers the best ice cream in Atlanta! I’ve tried many other places, but we always return here at least once or twice a month. The sweetness is just right for me, and there are so many flavor options to choose from. I’ve always enjoyed my visits to Frosty Caboose. I highly recommend it!

Great affordable ice cream! They have lots of flavors and even a non-dairy vanilla ice cream. Great place to stop by on a sunny day!

Google
If you're a fan of ice cream, you will love this place. Top quality and lots of choices at a reasonable price. As an added special bonus, there are often trains going by on the Norfolk southern line! The frosty caboose is an actual caboose sitting on a piece of railroad track. Neat and highly recommended.

Google
Frosty Caboose is a gem! Went on a quiet Friday around 11 — super fast service. Came back on a hot Sunday afternoon and, while the line was longer, it moved steadily. Tried the strawberry ice cream and a shake — both were delicious. Definitely worth the stop. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Having major ice cream cravings and so glad that I checked this place out! After an eventful birthday out with my partner, I knew in advance that I wanted to indulge in one of my recent cravings - ice cream. And I was lucky enough that The Frosty Caboose was only 5 minutes away from where we were spending our afternoon. After checking out the reviews and pics online, it was definitely a great way to wind down with a sweet treat. It wasn't difficult to spot at all, as the red train truly stood out. There's enough parking onsite near the trains on gravel and concrete for over a dozen cars which is a plus. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and there were two families enjoying their treats near the train along with 3 parties in line waiting to order or waiting for their items to be completed, love to see local businesses getting love! The ice cream flavors offered something for everybody and I was so happy to have a few minutes to decide what I wanted because wow, they really all sounded great. They offer a variety of ways to enjoy your ice cream including milkshakes, in a cup, cake/sugar/waffle cones and more. One of my major pregnancy cravings is ice cream on a cake cone so it was an easy decision for me. I decided to go with a double scoop on a cake cone with strawberry cheesecake and butter pecan. I also love a great hot dog so for good measure and because my baby said so, I also grabbed a hot dog with relish, ketchup and spicy mustard. Let me say - this was the biggest double scoop of my LIFE. Omg. As soon as they passed it to me I was thinking, "wtf did I get myself into?!" LOL. Let me say, as hungry as I have been eating for two, this was intimidating lol but I was up for the challenge. The ice cream was delicious!! I ate it on the ride home and by the time we made it our house, I was sugared out and felt like I needed to be rolled indoors. I can't believe my boyfriend let my greedy self order that big a** cone LOL but wow, it was such a bargain. I didn't eat my hot dog until later because I had done way too much with the cone but when I did, it was yummy - the bread was super soft too. Can't believe how late I am to the game, the Frosty Caboose has a new fan in me!

Yelp
This place is like the chuck e cheese of ice cream places - families seem to love this place, especially the kids. I can see why - it's very value, there's a lot of flavors, and it has a certain charm with it being on a caboose. However, the ice cream itself is very average. There's nothing special or premium about it, but that's ok - I don't believe that's the point of The Frosty Caboose. Come here for generous sized scoops of ice cream, enjoy the charm of the surrounding chamblee area, and let your inner kid be satisfied with simple pleasures. There's no indoor seating, let alone any seating in general. There's also not really any standing room on the caboose. Instead, what I and most other people did was just stand around and eat our ice cream in the parking lot.

Yelp
Staying in Sandy Springs on a Saturday night and wanted to find some ice cream before bedtime. The Frosty Caboose had some of the highest ratings from reviewers so we took a shot. The Caboose is tucked away in Chamblee in a neighborhood with cool vibes. There is plenty of paved and unpaved parking, a few benches and planters to sit on, but no indoor seating. We arrived about 9:15 and the line wrapped into the parking lot. Still only took about 20 minutes to make it through the line. The staff was friendly and let us sample a couple of flavors each. There are several flavors of ice cream. We found the ice cream to be extra smooth and creamy. The waffle cones were just the right thickness for a good crunch but not too heavy. Prices were fairly reasonable for a little shop like this too. Definitely made the right choice to get our ice cream fix here.

Yelp
The place is iconic and very nice for pictures. Should visit for people who's not from Atlanta. The ice cream tastes well. Not super delicious for say but very nice during hot summer in Atlanta. The price a little expensive for me. The service is very nice and friendly.

Yelp
First time here and waited in line for almost 30 minutes. The ice cream was tasty but not worth the long wait. They do have good prices and generous portions.

Yelp
Great affordable ice cream! They have lots of flavors and even a non-dairy vanilla ice cream. Great place to stop by on a sunny day!

Yelp
What a hidden gem. Cute kid friendly location. Next to the Chamblee train station and designed like a ...caboose. lol The Marta rides by, there is a possibility to see other trains, and also get to see planes fly by as the Chamblee airport is very near. We enjoyed the Oreo scoop and a kid sundae. Lots and lots of options to choose from. Very tasty!

Yelp
I loved it here! This is the cuuutest ice cream stand where you park and walk up to. There isn't anywhere to sit inside, but plenty of space across the parking lot to watch trains pass by. It is the perfect summer activity to sit outside and chat with ice cream while trains pass through. The ice cream was absolutely delicious! I have always loved Jenis, but I think Frosty Caboose just made my number 1 ice cream in Atlanta. Hoping to visit soon and try one of their sundaes ! Recs: Salted Caramel!

Yelp
Really cute place. Delicious ice cream and reasonable prices. I thought that the scoops were very generous. I ordered one scoop of the coconut ice cream, and it was delicious!

Yelp
This is one of the cutest ice cream shops i've ever been to. Easy parking and very cute idea of taking an old train and converting it into an ice cream stand. The ice cream they had is very good and I recommend getting one of the specials. I got the Keylime pie sundae and would get it again. It was delicious. My friend got the lemon sundae and we got raspberry filling with it and it was so good!

Yelp
What a gem! On a nice weather evening there's always a line, and its well worth it... Friendly service, delicious ice cream!

Yelp
*Sweet Tooth Conquered* Driving thru Chamblee around the dinner hour, I thought, 'Why not satisfy my sweet tooth?' This is THE cutest set-up, and though it has a line that seems is always long, it moves along quickly. While in line, feel-good tunes (think 80's et al.) entertain while you have time to peruse the flavors. Time flies, and before you know it, you're at the window & you'll know what to order. The variety of flavors span the traditional plus a few specialties (Ex. Coffee Crunch, Carrot Cake, and Rum Raisin) to name a few. And some of those will change with the seasons, of course. Parking is ample & the staff serves with smiles and efficiency. Definitely stop thru to satisfy the kids or just for the Big Kid in you

Yelp
We love this place! They have great ice cream, just wish they had better seating options available. AlSometimes the place looks a bit unkept. Not filthy, but can definitely use some cleaning and updating of the signage. Not a deal breaker since we keep coming back for more.

Yelp
I FINALLY made it here. I live in walking distance to this spot, yet I'm late to the party! We were blessed with a beautiful day in January, so after the park my bf and I decided to stop by. We stopped in around 5:30pm, so very small line. I ordered a double scoop waffle cone with both cookies n'cream and birthday cake ice cream. Creamy, delicious and tons of flavors to choose from. I was stuck trying to put combos together in my head, so I played it with my favorites to start. BUT my boyfriend got 2 scoops of cinnamon bun and apple pie and the apple pie looked amazing. In addition to ice cream cones/scoops, they serve hot dogs, chips, sundaes with tons of topping variations. This booth is located in downtown Chamblee across from Vintage Pizzeria. It's a big red caboose, so you can't miss it! Now that I've been, I will be back next weekend lol

Yelp
Ice cream was super yummy. Adorable building. Service was great. Not many places to sit and the line was long; however, it moved quick and we sat on some steps. Worth a visit.

Yelp
So this is a cool little spot that is actually in a caboose. you'll notice that it has music playing when you walk up so you'll feel right at home already! They have a ton of options and you'll sit there for a couple of minutes just trying to figure out what you want because the combinations are basically endless. They have staple flavors and they have new flavors. I got a shake with cookies and cream and the bourbon truffle. And then I got cookies and graham cracker mix inside. It was everything. came with whipped cream and a cherry, if you going to do it, do it all the way. The lady at the front was super nice and gave me all the time in the world. She actually went ahead and let me try flavors before I ordered. I mean I guess that's just like any other ice cream spot but she was really nice about it cuz she told me her preference as well. If you like ice cream, it's super good, friendly, and it's super affordable. It was like under $6 for shape. which anywhere else you go you might actually have to pay $9 or $10. I'm glad I stumbled across this.

Yelp
I noticed that on the Yelp page it had a bunch of tips- one of which was actually relevant: You can get 2 flavors in 1 scoop! Really, just great ice cream. The flavors were so spot-on! The walnuts were all throughout and the maple flavor was fantastic. The banana cream pie was rich and honestly didn't have much of an aftertaste (you know how it is with banana flavoring). The ice cream was super creamy and I could not have been happier with my one scoop. It was just the right amount for an after-dinner treat! My uncle didn't tell me what he got, but he did ask at the window about the banana cream pie I don't know what it was, but he ate it FAST. My sister and my mom both got the same thing, the Coal Train. It had chocolate chips, in chocolate ice, topped with cream whipped cream and hot fudge. My sister said hers melted really fast and it was really syrupy. She "wouldn't get it again". She said it was "Okay". The caboose has some Christmas lights out along the railing leading up to the window, but I do find that the walkway was made rather small for large crowds. A couple girls went up before us and we had to all move to the side to let them pass back by since the walkway doesn't keep going. It just ends at the ordering window. The caboose itself is red and cute. Personally, I recommend- whether for a quick date, an after-dinner treat with the family, or as a single adventurer out on the town...you'll like this ice cream! I guarantee it...maybe, just ask them to hold back with the chocolate fudge.

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect coming here but from the reviews I had a good feeling. The reviews are spot on!! We arrived during the week around 7pm when there was no line. They have a small parking lot and the ice cream is literally served out of a little train. It could use a coat of paint but it was super cute. We sampled a couple different flavors and I chose the Green Tea Ice Cream in a cup. The ice cream was extremely flavorful and had a great consistency. My husband had the chocolate chip cookie dough. You can't really mess that up! Prices are reasonable and customer service is top notch. We recommend coming here and look forward to coming back again soon.

Yelp
The ice creams at Frosty Caboose is a great option for families. The caboose is on a little bit of rail track in the middle of a parking lot. That parking lot is far too huge for the caboose, but it does make parking very easy. It almost looks like an outdoor exhibit or colorful historical rail car. The ice cream is pretty cheap for the quality. The flavors span everything from dairy free vanilla to mango ice cream. The topping variety is also pretty large. Kids will love rainbow ice cream and gummie bears which isn't really a possible combination at most ice cream parlors. Kids will also enjoy being able to play on the two ends of the caboose after they finish their ice creams.
google avatar

Roann T.

Yelp
My sister and I were in the Chamblee area when we came across this adorable ice cream spot. It looks like they took a old railroad car and turned into an ice cream cone. What really brings this ice cream themed spot together is that it's on a trail track with a railroad light positioned in front of it. Once we got to the window everyone was really helpful with picking a flavor. I sampled about two different kinds before deciding on a coffee based ice cream. It was the perfect pick me up for a hot summer day. There are plenty of areas to sit if you wanted to enjoy your ice cream outside. I can't wait to come back and try more flavors!
google avatar

Rob R.

Yelp
Who doesn't like ice cream on a warm summer evening? Lots of flavor options for ice cream, and toppings to spruce up your dessert. Don't fret if the line is in the parking lot, it moves fast and the people are friendly.
google avatar

Al R.

Yelp
We love The Frosty Caboose, it's a downtown Chamblee icon. Great spot for dessert after dinner at Vintage Pizza or if you're simply craving ice cream or a sweet treat. Locally, family owned with most of the employees students at Chamblee High School so don't forget to tip the kids.
google avatar

Carlie M.

Yelp
A cute spot in Chamblee to grab some ice cream. I came in on a Tuesday around 5pm, so it wasn't crowded. I've heard it can get quite crowded around peak times (after dinner). They have a variety of flavors to choose from. I got the caramel crunch and the cookies n cream topped with Heath bits. It was a bit pricey for the amount you get, but tasty overall.
google avatar

Emotinal D.

Yelp
Fast Service Great Flavors cute sign and serves are needs for awsome ice cream! coming back agine!!!
google avatar

Karla C.

Yelp
Genuinely good ice cream, I think all the ones I've tried there have been good. This place is literally a caboose that was turned into an ice cream pit stop. No inside sitting and not much outside sitting, more like a grab and go type of place.
google avatar

Shani H.

Yelp
Cute ice cream shop in downtown Chamblee. Its in a nice area so you can grab dinner in the neighborhood then walk here to get a scoop or just visit after perusing the shops on antique row.
google avatar

Yelp
This milkshake was so amazing! I really love this location and the richness of the ice cream
google avatar

Sid B.

Yelp
Stopped here for sweets after dinner. Wife had a chocolate chocolate ice cream cup. She loved it. I had "no sugar added" mix of vanilla and chocolate. Good enough. A number of families were having their ice cream . Other families were coming here after pizza from across the street.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Super cute caboose with great ice cream! Fun to watch the big trains pull out of the Norfolk southern station next door. Lots of happy kids and adults strolling the newish stretch of Chamblee growth. Superman is a hit ... and chocolate w/ peanut butter is great ... how can you really go wrong with ice cream?
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
Stopped here after dinner and got some great ice cream. I have been here before and recommend this as an after dinner, afternoon treat! Give yourself a break and try this ice cream. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Akilah A.

Yelp
I've been a patron at this location for over 10 years! It's filled with sweet memories of my family gathered outside on the gravel lot enjoying a cone or treat. I remember when it was just myself and husband getting a some dessert on a Friday night but Nowadays, it's more about watching my daughter enjoy the ambiance - trains passing, birds or trains flying by while she smears her cotton candy ice cream on her face. The music playing on the stereo is fittingly upbeat - pop rock. Most of the times, we just sit around the trees but other times, we had folding chairs in our trunk to use for sitting. Service is fast, friendly; ice creams are amazing and prices are fair. Hope to keep visiting for the next decade or 2!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! I hate to share this little gem for fear the lines will get even longer. But It would he criminal to keep this a secret. Expect that there will almost always be a line; They're that good. But to their credit the staff are always nice and quick. Their Banana Pudding Milkshake is fire as well as Black Cherry and Key Lime Pie. You'll love the place as so many already do. We go at least two evenings per week during the summer.

Doug C.

Yelp
Awesome. They have a number of flavors. We tried the Coffee Crunch. It was loaded with chocolate and caramel crunch. Less than $5 for two scoops.
google avatar

Ariel B.

Yelp
Listen! I stumbled across this little shop because I was craving a milkshake and this was the closest spot. I am so glad I came across this little quirky ice cream stand. I tried the Banana Pudding ice cream shake .... YOOOOO definitely worth the calories. It was delicious, smooth, and creamy. And for the price point it's a must visit!

Yelp
Three of us went at 8:15 on a Saturday night. There were a few parties in front of us, but the line moved fairly quickly. As we ate our ice cream, the line grew, so we definitely went at the right time. We got a scoop of banana pudding ice cream in a waffle cone, a scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough in a bowl, and half cookie dough and half cookies and cream in a waffle cone. It came out to a little more than $12, before tip, which isn't too bad. The banana pudding was amazing, with actual vanilla wafers in it. The cookie dough and cookies and cream were really good too. Half and half scoop is the way to go because you get more ice cream out of it. They have plenty of parking. They also have 2 trash cans. There's not much space to eat, so we just stood around a tree planter while we ate. A few problematic things: - In COVID times, he lady ringing us up was wearing a mask, but it wasn't covering her nose. - One of the guys scooping our ice cream wasn't wearing a mask at all. - Unrelated to COVID, one of their sundaes is called "Orient Express," used to describe their sundae with green tea. "Orient" is politically incorrect and I really wish they wouldn't use this term, especially considering solely white people are working there. Overall, though, I would recommend. Please fix the mask situation though.

Shelby C.

Yelp
Food was advertised at pecan ice cream but just vanilla. Service was horrible, had an attitude the whole time as well as simply asking for chocolate syrup after I forgot to add it to my order. Told me that should couldn't add it but then wouldn't charge my card for it afterwards. Cool location but very inconvenient for having a long line and dangerous with heights everywhere.

Yelp
I was out and about in the evening on President's Day 2020 and wanted something sweet. Frosty Caboose was still open at 8 pm, even though a lot of restaurants were closed for the holiday. This was one of the rare times that I've come here when no one was in line. Parking was easy to find (obviously), and the woman taking the orders and taking payment at the window and the guy scooping up the ice cream worked well together and quickly gave me my ice cream. Mmmmm! I got a scoop each of pistachio and coconut ice cream in a cup. After almost 5 years of coming here and trying many of the flavors, these two are my favorites. The ice cream at Frosty Caboose is solid and rich, and full of flavor. Ask for samples to find the flavor(s) you like. The only thing that I could suggest as an improvement for Frosty Caboose is to provide tables or benches for people to sit on. There is no seating inside the caboose. I'm not sure if Frosty Caboose had a lot of customers this past holiday, but I sure appreciate that they stayed open until 9 pm!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a very cute place. It has a huge list of flavors, the prices are great and the line isn't as big as other places. They also sell hotdogs for a full meal hahaha The only thing is that it could do a visual makeover... but being understaffed I guess it got other priorities. If you need a job give them a call!
google avatar

Pamela A.

Yelp
They used to have the most delicious ice cream and it was Greenwoods. Now it's still pretty good.
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
This is a really fun little ice cream shop. The location is good and there is plenty of parking and the area is not too busy so you could go for a short walk if you were so inclined. The actual caboose is quite cute and makes for a fun theme, especially if you have young kids, they will love it! The staff is friendly and the ice cream is good, I have tried a few of their flavors, but, the one I like best is key lime pie. It has chunks of pie inside the ice cream and really tastes amazing. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

Morgan C.

Yelp
I came on a saturday night & there was a line. The place is definitely popular! I waited about 10-15 minutes till I got to order. I ordered two scoops in a cup - one salted caramel and one chocolate fetish. I really liked the salted caramel! The chocolate fetish was okay but it tasted a bit like it had been frozen a little too much. There was ice flakes in the middle but it was okay. Overall, this is a good spot with good prices. I would come back. Lots of parking too which is nice!
google avatar

nora s.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot with nice staff, great music from the 80s, and yummy ice cream! I went on Memorial Day and ordered a double scoop of the chunky salted caramel ice cream. Prices are decent and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Rodney S.

Yelp
The ice cream was awesome the service was great I would definitely recommend this well worth the money
google avatar

Brandon P.

Yelp
Always find this one to be a fun treat with the kiddos. The I cream is quality and they have a variety of flavors and a few different types of options (we usually just stick with the scoops). The line can get a little long but there is plenty of parking and we usually find a place to sit on the areas around the trees or next to the train tracks. If you have little ones I think they get a free small scoop if they are under like 36 or 40 inches (there is a small sign next to the ordering window that shows how tall they can be.
google avatar

Nessa N.

Yelp
The best peach ice cream in town! Because Georgia is known for their peaches I had to try their peach ice cream and my god, I wish peach was a regular ice cream flavor everywhere. It was so fresh and creamy and the peach chunks perfectly complimented the ice cream. About $4-5 for a cone or cup! It's a train theme and outdoors so you can just sit outside on a nice day and eat your ice cream next to the train tracks! Will be back again!
google avatar

Yelp
Frosty treat to beat the HEAT! It really is a hidden treasure. Located on the side of the road, you'd think it was just a nostalgic train caboose, rather than a spot to get your ice cream fix, but it is indeed a well of frosty treats that are as every bit unique as the caboose itself. The down side is that it is rather out of shape. It's in desperate need of an update. The outside is just a strong gust of wind from having its facade ripped off, but it does the job. The inside is rather cramped and when I was there, the manager/owner (I assume) was telling me that the heat outside was tripping their A/C unit .. so I must have been like an oven in there! As you can see they have some unique flavors and have a variety of ices, sorbet and cups to cones. I picked up (2) quarts and a single cone for less than $20 plus tip. Fun hacks, they do allow you to "stack" flavors (2) in a container, but I sweet talked her a little and she put a little of flavor I just wanted to try on top. They all the treats your looking for + some I'm definitely going back to try. Like this 3 cookie sandwich sundae that I was so tempted to get, but driving was not going to allow me that fun!!! They also have doggie treat for the fur babies. So outside of needing a power washing and a fresh coat of paint...you really need to get your caboose over to this Frosty spot and take home all the treats to keep you cool and satisfied, during this heatwave. We had Chocolate Chocolate peanut butter/ Chunky salted caramel Scoop of Butter pecan (Oh and that too flavor was lemony good)
google avatar

Olivia K.

Yelp
This is seriously a hidden gem. Frosty Caboose has been around for a long while, and they are really on point with their ice cream flavors. I literally love them all, and love that a lot of them are hard to find elsewhere! Their sundaes are good too if you like a more classic ice cream, fudge, whip, cherry on top kinda dessert. You can't beat the price and quality here! Love this place!

Yelp
I've known of the Frosty Caboose for years. Driving by this place several times, and never stopping in due to crowds, it wasn't until fellow yelper Tammi D and I were fresh from a park walk at the nearby Dresden park, that we stopped here for some ice cream when crowds were low. I ordered the following: 1 Cup of ice cream ($3.25) For no extra charge, you can split your cup with two flavors. Of the two flavors, I got their ACHHHH, Like BUTTAH pecan, and Sea turtle madness. My favorite of the two flavors definitely was the Butter pecan. Creamy, but a bit too sweet. They did manage to keep a bit of the crunch on the pecans when you bit into it though, so not bad! The Sea turtle madness is salted caramel, and as the frosty caboose staff says, no turtles were harmed in making this ice cream. While this wasn't bad ice cream, it fell short to me in terms of flavor, and I wasn't wow'd at all. There are a couple of lots for the caboose, although the paved lot we were on had heavily faded parking lines, making it a bit hard to see where/how to park. The Caboose itself is a kid magnet, and that's definitely one of the great draws of this place. Parents bring their kids and kids climb all over the caboose. Who cold resist a train and ice cream on a sunny day?? While I only tried two flavors, the frosty caboose offers 36 dedicated flavors year round, and also offers a handful of season flavors. Maybe if/when I go back i'll pick different flavors that appeal to me a little bit better than what I tried. For now though, i've tried a lot of really good ice cream and i've had much better. This ultimately is what I think is the Caboose's biggest issue for me. There's a lot of ice cream competition in Georgia and the general area of chamblee/buford highwy, that do just as good or better. For this reason, i'll definitely be back.....it just may be a while.
