Yelp
Lived in Franklin for close 30 years. Started coming to Frothy years ago when it in habited a great location on 5th avenue. Lots has changed in the years including how they choose to handle service. Lets break it down:
Atmosphere 4 Stars: The reason I rate it highly is that I prefer to sit outside on the porch. It looks over 5th and exemplifies a small town vibe. The inside is not bad but when crowded it can be loud. If you can, site outside. If they did not have such as great location and setup, I would be hard pressed to rate this place with 3 stars.
Service 2 Stars: This is where Frothy has failed to have a sufficient amount of froth. Several issues make this a tough sell. First, you now need to see the hostess when sitting outside. Additionally, they moved their service from counter to wait staff. Normally this would be a good step up given the counter area is cramped and small. What makes it challenging is that they don't staff for this type of restaurant. The staff is very friendly but just not enough of them. Took over 20 minutes just to get waited on and even after that, my food did not come for over 40 minutes. If you have time to burn, maybe you can tolerate this but if you are here for lunch and visiting the town, you would be better served by going to 55 South, Franklin Mercantile (one of my favs), Puckett's, Burger Dandy or Meridees.
Food 3.5 Stars: I had the Prosciutto warm sandwich. It comes with chips and salsa as its side. Most other sides have an upcharge to them. I struggle with this because it was so close to a 4. First the chips. Don't think they were fresh but I expected that. My problem was that most of them were crushed, making impossible to dip in the salsa. The salsa was actually really good. Seemed fresh and not too hot. Now for the sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised. The sourdough was toasted perfectly and the cheese and prosciutto heated appropriately. Their special mayo gave it the right punch. As i said, I struggled with this, but to be a 4 in my book, all elements of the plate need to be hitting. I could not get over the crushed up chips.
Value 3 Stars: Lets first admit that Franklin is more a tourist town these days versus a local place. Unfortunate, but true. So if you are visiting and its your vacation, you may be fine with prices. After all, your on vacation and all of us spend more for things when we are on vacation. Expect to pay nearly $20 for lunch (food, drink, taxes and tip). If the "site down / wait" service was more efficient, I would not be as negative but when you go from counter service to table service, you need to live up to the expectation. $20 for lunch merits good table service
So all in, this is not a bad spot but also not the best place to come if you are a visitor. There are other places to go in town, as I have mentioned in this review, so look around. If you are looking for a great lunch I would recommend Burger Dandy or Franklin Mercantile (get the tomato basil).
