12 Essential Brunch Spots in Franklin | Eater Nashville

"Whether it’s on the porch or inside their cozy dining space, enjoying the all-day brunch at this local chain is practically a rite of passage. Smoked gouda grits, biscuits with chorizo gravy, and bagel sandwiches toppling over with eggs, cheese, and bacon are elevated to brunch nirvana when paired with a cup of Frothy Monkey’s very own roasted coffee. Throw a shot of whiskey in that cup of joe for a spicier brunch experience." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

I was a bit saddened by our disappointing experience given the fantastic reviews this place gets. We arrived in Franklin and wanted to try this place for breakfast as someone recommended it - we went for Sunday breakfast. The vibe seemed great and the menu looked good online so we thought it was a perfect spot. We came in and no one really spoke to us at all so my kids and I stood by the door for a while until eventually we were told it would be about 15 mins for a table (although we were happy to sit outside but I wasn’t sure whether that was only for takeout). They seemed moderately busy as it was late Sunday morning so I thought it maybe this was the result of being too busy. Thankfully the very friendly guy behind the coffee counter let us peruse the menu while we waited (he was very friendly). When we were seated eventually, it was in a back room and it took a while for the young lady looking after our table to approach us. It was just me and my kids so they got two kids breakfasts (a French toast and a kid’s bacon and scrambled eggs meal), and I got an omelette. The food took so long to come out that my kids were getting very restless and really wanted to go elsewhere - it was around 30 minutes between ordering and food coming. The food was okay - my omelette had big chunks of pepper, bacon, and onion inside but they were very oily so I just ate the eggs. The kids were super hungry by that point so they ate! Despite the incredibly slow service (even getting water refills took ages), I found the guy at the front behind the coffee counter to be the nicest out of everyone in the place. There were a few other guys walking around (maybe going upstairs to clear tables? Not sure) and when I accidentally got in his way while looking for the bathroom he was very unhappy with me. Lastly, coffee-wise, I wouldn’t recommend the Golden Monkey unless you like your coffee very heavy/sweet - the blend of flavors just didn’t work very well for me personally (and I normally love cinnamon in my coffee but this had turmeric, cayenne, etc). I did ask if it would be sweet and was told no but it turned out to be quite sweet. I was quite sad about our experience as it came recommended but perhaps it was an off day. Maybe a non-Sunday is a better day to visit.

My wife and I went to Frothy Monkey 🐵 most places were closed that day but they were open. I gotta tell you that I was really impressed with this place. They took a home and made it into a coffee shop and it’s really homey! This place is great. We were near a booklet with books that you can checkout while you are there. I ordered the Havana Latte and my wife got the Rosemary Honey Latte and both of them were delicious! Also we got some good and I got the Royale sandwiche🤴🏼 and wife got Shrimp and grits 🍤 Gotta tell you the wife was impressed with the grits she loved it and my Royale was very good 👍 If you are looking for a nice coffee ☕️ place with really good food I suggest you give it a try because we loved it! Great atmosphere and also they have a lot of seating especially upstairs!

Google
Cute coffee shop. Not a huge selection of speciality coffee drinks. The monkey drink, can't remember the specific name, was tasty- chocolate and banana. The house roast is good as well.

Google
What a lovely coffee shop. We enjoyed a Havana latte (hot) and an iced Monkey Mocha. Great decor, comfortable seats, great staff, and delicious drinks. Highly recommend this place.

Google
Good coffee with a solid bagel sandwich. Mocha was solid with a nice aftertaste. The only part I didn't enjoy about the sandwich was the slightly too hard bagel. Funny ik, but the rest was good and filling. Definitely ask for their hot sauce; it's a great addition if you want a bit of a kick.

It was a long weekend and the place was simply packed. Thankfully we got the table right away. We sat upstairs, and we started with some coffee. The iced mocha drink was more like an iced coffee. It was fine but very basic. The cortado was good. My husband got a Cali toast which was basically an avocado toast on a sourdough with a side of greens in balsamic. It was fresh and good. However the portion was less, and he was not quite full!! I ordered a biscuit with chorizo. The biscuit, egg and caramelised peppers- onions, with some cheese on top were good. I expected a substantial amount of chorizo however, the bits of chorizo were hidden in the gravy! Overall, it did not turn out to be my favourite. Overall the place was very popular and the ambiance was charming.

Google
We stopped in one afternoon recently while it was raining. The vibes of the rain mixed with the inside vibes gave me all the fall feels. I felt like I was in a coffee shop in Boston. It was heavenly. Anyways, the staff was great, the menu had lots of variety. There was a fresh flower on each table. As you are seated they greeted us with water. The charcuterie board was the perfect “girl dinner.” I can’t wait to stop back in.

Google
I met a few friends for our monthly dinner here and it was so good! We had to wait a few for a table, but it's a small space and we had a party of 5. We had dinner and drinks, and everything was wonderful! I even had a lavender old fashioned, and it was so good! I am usually not a fan of people messing with the old fashioned, but they did a good job here. The happy hour special on Wednesday is pretty good, so you should give it a go. I also love how much can be made gluten friendly. Lots of their no gluten symbol on the menu plus GF bread for all the sandwich and burger options.

Yelp
I ordered the iced coffee, and my wife opted for the kombucha. This place is simply awesome. We had the pleasure of visiting two of their locations, one in Franklin and the other in Nashville. Both spots exude a fantastic vibe and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile. The iced coffee I had was top-notch - smooth, flavorful, and just the right amount of refreshing. My wife's kombucha was equally impressive, with a refreshing and delightful taste that stood out. Although we haven't had the chance to try the food yet, the menu looks incredibly enticing with a variety of options that promise to satisfy. The ambiance at both locations is cozy and perfect for relaxing or catching up with friends. Frothy Monkey is definitely a local gem, and it's clear why it's a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Whether you're looking for a great cup of coffee, a refreshing drink, or a comfortable place to hang out, Frothy Monkey is worthy of a visit. We'll certainly be back to explore more of what they have to offer.

Yelp
Best coffee in Franklin in my opinion. Lattes are my drink of choice, and they have the best tasting beans around. Roasted to perfection, flavorful, but never too robust or burned. I buy all my beans here for home coffee. Really good food options as well. The garden burger is my go to if I'm eating as well.

Yelp
Always a good flow of people the few times we've frequented Frothy Monkey. I really enjoyed their unique coffee selections with a beautiful balance of flavors, yet not overpowering the actual coffee. Enjoyed our stops here and would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
Definitely would recommend this place! My husband and I have become a bit snobby when it comes to coffee (in the nicest way possible) and we adored our drinks! I got one of their signature lattes and he got a pour over and Cortado. All great! Food was good too. We loved all the farm fresh ingredients!
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a cute spot! The home made syrups really put the icing on top of the cake. These crafted coffees are worth the wait! It was a little bust though so that was expected. I think next time I'll have to grab a syrup.

Yelp
Came here fora little bit of studying and some caffeine and I got both. I tried the Golden Monket Latte which had turmeric milk, honey, and cinnamon. Nice ambiance, good service, and the drink was delicious. Will have to come back to try the baked goods, the food, and the cocktails.

Yelp
Visiting Franklin this week and noticed Frothy Monkey while walking the town. The name alone piqued our interest, so of course we had to stop in! Very eclectic place with good food and great coffee! Everything tasted fresh and seemed to be of good quality. I thoroughly enjoyed my latte and am looking forward to coming back before we leave to try another.

Yelp
Still a big fan of the Frothy Monkey! Our most recent visit was for the Wine Pairings dinner. What? you ask.... If you don't know, you must not be on the mailing list. It's an amazing event, 5 course meal with chef specialties and wine selected for each course. Always a great evening and a chance to enjoy some unusual dishes as well as some new wines. Held in the upstairs it is one of our favorite evenings out. Before each course, you hear about the wine you are drinking and the chef comes up to discuss the food in the next course.

Yelp
Really cute brunch spot in town. Went here with my mom and enjoyed a truly delicious latte and the Gail salad. Everything was delicious and felt healthy. I liked the ambiance as well. Superb service!

Yelp
The proof is in the picture y'all!! This avocado toast was so delicious that I finished it all and I wasn't even initially craving avocado toast it was just that good! I love this restaurants atmosphere, it is a great place to study at or just grab some food and drinks with friends. The service is always faster than expected and the workers are usually pretty nice, I also just tried the singer tea because I woke up with a sore throat and when I tell you it fixed my issue it fixed everything y'all, I'm definitely putting this place on the top of my list!! (Not sponsored just that good)

Yelp
I don't know what happened to the Frothy Monkey, but my latest experience was not good. I ordered the salmon sandwich on gluten free bread. I wish I had taken a picture of the tiny piece of salmon. It couldn't have been 3 ounces. They lost a customer.

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town. I came here in the morning to work on my laptop. I ordered a cortado for the first time (in my life) and it was delicious. I sat on the front porch and drank it while working. The hostess and the person who took my drink order were super nice and seemed into working there. I came back again later with my husband and we ordered a light dinner. The food was great! I ordered a cortado again and this time it came with a seltzer water. I liked it there and will return. I recommend.

Yelp
I really loved having an early breakfast at the Frothy Monkey. My biscuits and gravy with chorizo were good and the Andouille was great. I think my only observation was that the amount each plate has was noticeably different. I'm not saying too off the plates but my partner was left hungry after his portion.
google avatar

Luis M.

Yelp
There was definitely some monkeying around today with the plating of my Banana Overnight Oats. Looked like a kindergartner was made at the plate and tossed whatever they found from their homeschool meal. Taste 2/5 On the flip side. It was pure gold with the "Golden Monkey". The rich and frothy turmeric milk, exemplified with the notes of honey and warm cinnamon, intertwining with a delightful shot of divine espresso. This alone was worth the drive from The Boro. Taste 5/5 Service was good. The ambiance is alive and can be distracting if you're looking for a place to study, or work. I'd say it's more of a cafe over a coffee shop. Would I visit again? Coffee: Yes. Food: Nope.

Yelp
I'm really sad to say that this place had really gone downhill. I used to go to Frothy at least once a week back in 2017 and it doesn't compare to what it was back in the day. Shots are pulled too long and very inconsistent. Service is also pretty terrible. Since 2020, you have to be seated to order coffee (unless it's to go). I waited about 5+ min today and all 6 people behind the bar totally ignored my family. So I approached the register to order coffee, and everyone seemed shocked that I approached them to order..? There's just so much more that's happened but ultimately, terrible service from being sat, to ordering, to paying for our drinks. I really tried to approach this place with a great attitude and kept saying "oh it's just a one off! They're great, I promise!" But ever experience this past month has been disappointing. I've been hearing from a lot of people to not go to Frothy anymore, and I think today we finally decided to stop. I'm willing to drive 20+ min ti a good coffee shop rather than 5 minutes for terrible coffee and service.

Yelp
Emmm I can't give them 5 stars because we are not happy about the food maybe the chef had bad day the food wasn't good.

Yelp
Great place to meet friends and enjoy coffee and drinks. The location is great. Right in the main area of downtown Franklin. Best coffee in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Not a lot of food options. The host was rude to me and my family and the coffee was mediocre at best. We really like the atmosphere though! Very pretty inside.

Yelp
Lived in Franklin for close 30 years. Started coming to Frothy years ago when it in habited a great location on 5th avenue. Lots has changed in the years including how they choose to handle service. Lets break it down: Atmosphere 4 Stars: The reason I rate it highly is that I prefer to sit outside on the porch. It looks over 5th and exemplifies a small town vibe. The inside is not bad but when crowded it can be loud. If you can, site outside. If they did not have such as great location and setup, I would be hard pressed to rate this place with 3 stars. Service 2 Stars: This is where Frothy has failed to have a sufficient amount of froth. Several issues make this a tough sell. First, you now need to see the hostess when sitting outside. Additionally, they moved their service from counter to wait staff. Normally this would be a good step up given the counter area is cramped and small. What makes it challenging is that they don't staff for this type of restaurant. The staff is very friendly but just not enough of them. Took over 20 minutes just to get waited on and even after that, my food did not come for over 40 minutes. If you have time to burn, maybe you can tolerate this but if you are here for lunch and visiting the town, you would be better served by going to 55 South, Franklin Mercantile (one of my favs), Puckett's, Burger Dandy or Meridees. Food 3.5 Stars: I had the Prosciutto warm sandwich. It comes with chips and salsa as its side. Most other sides have an upcharge to them. I struggle with this because it was so close to a 4. First the chips. Don't think they were fresh but I expected that. My problem was that most of them were crushed, making impossible to dip in the salsa. The salsa was actually really good. Seemed fresh and not too hot. Now for the sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised. The sourdough was toasted perfectly and the cheese and prosciutto heated appropriately. Their special mayo gave it the right punch. As i said, I struggled with this, but to be a 4 in my book, all elements of the plate need to be hitting. I could not get over the crushed up chips. Value 3 Stars: Lets first admit that Franklin is more a tourist town these days versus a local place. Unfortunate, but true. So if you are visiting and its your vacation, you may be fine with prices. After all, your on vacation and all of us spend more for things when we are on vacation. Expect to pay nearly $20 for lunch (food, drink, taxes and tip). If the "site down / wait" service was more efficient, I would not be as negative but when you go from counter service to table service, you need to live up to the expectation. $20 for lunch merits good table service So all in, this is not a bad spot but also not the best place to come if you are a visitor. There are other places to go in town, as I have mentioned in this review, so look around. If you are looking for a great lunch I would recommend Burger Dandy or Franklin Mercantile (get the tomato basil).

Yelp
First visit was a quick stop in go-to order of coffee and baked goods. The baristas seem to excel at their craft, as the lattes and mochas looked and tasted excellent. The cold brew was flavorless and acidic; will not order again. The three different bakery items were far below what one should expect from an establishment such as this... Dry. The Scone - dry. The Chocolate croissant - dry. The Cream Cheese Danish - dry. In fact, the croissant and danish had that "day old" texture to them. Very unfortunate, and if I'd still been in the vicinity, I'd have taken them back. I will give Frothy Monkey another shot, but I don't know that I'll be able to abide the same poor quality when I'm certainly being charged for it.

Yelp
I heard this place was a chain, so my expectations weren't super high... but chain or not, the coffee is smooth and rich. I got the turtle latte, which was yummy. Hubby got the mocha monkey, and that is just plain heavenly. I hope this chain moves it's way further south!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Visited Frothy Monkey for a quick brunch, service was excellent as was our food. I had a coffee and the biscuits and chorizo gravy. Both were great. We sat outside, where heat lamps kept the temperature comfortable despite it being late November. Overall a great visit with nice folks!
google avatar

Nate M.

Yelp
I really love the front patio here it's great for people watching and coffee sipping. My last visit here I had the avo toast and a cold brew coffee. Both are very good, but my toast could have used an egg, which they do offer, but declined it for some reason. The outdoor patio is great, but if that's not your vibe, they have indoor seating as well. Just a heads up, be ready to wait because this place is always packed. There's minimal parking in the back of the building and very little street parking. Planning on getting some work done here? The wifi is a little slow and the restaurant is loud. Better bring those earbuds!

Jo F.

Yelp
Our entire party was not a fan of the food. :( The service was friendly, and the warm drinks were yummy.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Great coffee shop with excellent food options! It's rare that you find a restaurant with great coffee or an amazing coffee shop with delicious food. Frothy Monkey has both! There's a very nice patio to enjoy the warmer weather, that's great for conversation and people watching. I always use this place as a meet-up spot for friends and family who are out-of-towners. There's street parking available and also parking in the back that's very affordable if you can't find a spot out front. The service is great too. The staff are friendly and know their menu items well. It's a must try, while in Franklin!

Wes K.

Yelp
Can't speak to the food being good or not. Have been twice and walked out both times with our order never having been taken. Most recent experience was today. We were seated and after some time we left without even getting a water.
google avatar

Ailis R.

Yelp
food and drinks were amazing! the rosemary honey latte was delicious and the veggie burger was the best vegetarian sandwich i've ever had. so good!

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday around 10am. We only waited about 18 minutes for a table for 2. Not bad for a Saturday morning in Franklin. We ordered coffee to go and walked around a little while we waited. I got the Turtle Latte. I thought it would be on the sweeter side but it wasn't. I didn't care for it very much but no big deal. We were seated upstairs in a quiet room which we liked. Someone came over and poured some water for us and then a little while later someone came to take our order. I ordered the Farmhouse breakfast and substituted fruit salad for the grits. They said they don't have potatoes anymore. When we got our food it looked good. My Farmhouse breakfast was okay. The eggs and toast were cold but tasted okay. The jam they serve with the toast was tasty. The best thing on my plate was the bacon. It was super yummy. My fruit salad had pineapple, grapes and cantaloupe. The grapes were bruised and overly soft. The cantaloupe was past its expiration. The pineapple was good. My boyfriend's sandwich was good he said. The potato soup he had with it wasn't good. He called it dirt soup so I didn't want to try it. Overall I'd say there are a lot of better options in Franklin. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either, hence the 3 stars.

Yelp
Wonderful selection of unique coffee beverages, great friendly service and fresh great tasting food. Hope I can make it back before we leave the area.

Yelp
SERVICE: Not extremely friendly like what you'd expect in the South? I'm from Cali and I felt like I was back there; in the not so cool but over priced area. FOOD: French toast: ok, California breakfast: it was toast and eggs with a wedge of avocado ? Nothing we'd order again. Plain Bagel and cream cheese : , a Capri sandwich with Bacon : it was good and the hibiscus cake was delicious, but very rich. DRINKS: hot cocoa: , vanilla latte: alright , and a hummingbird on ice: ok The order was $ 80.00 - date 9/2022

Yelp
Had the salmon sandwich and it was delicious / especially the bread! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
We were only in Nashville for two days and for those two days this is the only place we went for breakfast! The food is so fresh and leaves you feeling full in a great way. I had some of the best food and coffee in the longest time here. The inside is so charming and rustic. Not only that, the service is so amazing. Alvin was a great server and my table loved him. If I lived in Tennessee I would go here multiple times a week.
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious evening snack last night at the Frothy Monkey. While they were out of the Sweetwater Valley smoked cheddar, the Sage Derby and house-made pimento cheese on the toasted bread was delightful!

Yelp
It was a very crowded saturday yet staff were incredibly fast and kind, ambiance is awesome i loved the paintings with qr codes which has informations about paintings and their prices , love it! I had an Iced Americano it was delicate and ice cold as i wished, it was a very nice experience to have, thank you guys!!

Yelp
Really good coffee. We also enjoyed our salad, soup and sandwiches. Reasonable priced too.
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
The amount of meat on this $14 sandwich is truly a joke. I asked the server about it and she said this is standard. Okay thanks for the clarification.. I won't be coming here again.

Sandra K.

Yelp
Such a cool place. Food is great and coffee is fantastic. It's an old house converted into a restaurant, very cool.
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, if the upstairs is closed don't try to go and work there because the 1 outlet downstairs doesn't work.

Yelp
Nice stop on a cold wintery February afternoon- cozy surroundings Coffee and turtle latte were good Hot Chocolate was warm-ish... we should have requested they be reaccomplished but we were chilly and anything warmer than air temperature was OK right then... Server was attentive and pleasant Would return if in the area again

Yelp
Got the Havana latte and amazing!! Service was great and the building is pretty! It's an old looking house, signage is hidden but you can find it with the rainbow flag out front.

Yelp
The downtown Franklin, TN location features great coffee, tasty food, and a truly warm environment.

Yelp
All Frothy Monkey coffee shops are sorely overrated to me. Despite this, I still love it. It's a "moth to the flame" situation. I am drawn to this local chain because it is a great place to study, a great place to get a meal, and I enjoy the vibe it offers. All of them seem to run similar vibes, but what makes the Franklin location different is the demographic who frequents it. It's a bit stiffer here than it is comparably to the ones in Nashville. However, with that being said, the staff seem to be chill and keep the Frothy Monkey brand down to earth. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my experience here and felt the service was spot on along with the food and drink. I liked the set up of their dining room and how the maximized the space to the best of their ability. I feel that I would return for sure and it is an easy place to come in and grab what you need and go, too. It's a little limiting on restrooms, but I would not necessarily think that would be a flaw in the design. They're utilizing the space to the best to their ability, especially while maintaining the integrity of the historic building that it is located in. 4 stars solid from me.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Cute little space. I got a seasonal drink and it was very smooth and tasty. The store employees were also very nice. There's good seating space.

Yelp
Frothy Monkey is great! I love their lattes - they have unique flavor combinations and really good coffee. Their snacks/pastries are good as well and it's nice that there's a good amount of consistency in the preparations across locations. Definitely quickly became my go to coffee choice!

Yelp
Great breakfast. It's a crowded place but we enjoyed the coffee and food We will be going back again

Yelp
I enjoyed my visit to Frothy Monkey the other day. Boy was this place packed!!! We ordered a couple of their specialty coffees which were good.

K S.

Yelp
This morning was my first time at a Frothy Monkey. The building itself is cool, with a huge porch on the front. We were seated inside right away. (Great for a Saturday in the summer!) The inside atmosphere was just average. The service was decent, and the menu had a nice variety of breakfast choices. My meal was a mix of good and not-so-good: I had drip coffee, which tasted sour. The sausage patties were really good, and the cheese grits were delicious. The sourdough toast was hard and crusty, and the eggs were rubbery. Overall, I would go again for convenience sake, but I wouldn't seek it out or recommend it.
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday morning around 9am and were able to easily get a table with no wait. Service was very friendly and prompt. I love the variety of specialty coffee drinks they have. I tried 2: the Turtle Latte and the Hansel & Gretel (gingerbread) Latte. Both were great, but I especially loved the gingerbread flavoring of the Hansel and Gretel (it was November 1, so officially Christmas season!). As for food I got the Farmer's Breakfast, a typical sampling of breakfast staples like toast, eggs, and meat. All in all, it was very enjoyable breakfast outing - recommend you stop in, especially if you covet fun lattes like I do!
