On the Grid : Frothy Monkey

"From hand-made coffees and hearty breakfast to light dinners and craft beer, this downtown coffeehouse will fill your cup. Grab a cozy seat in the back and get some work done or share a big farm table with friends and coworkers upstairs. The bread is baked in-house, the coffee is poured with love and tenderness, and the food is just what you were looking for (and vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free friendly!)." - FoxFuel Creative

The Frothy Monkey The Nations Review - The Nations - Nashville - The Infatuation

"Frothy Monkey is synonymous with the city’s cafe scene—the first location opened in 12 South back in 2004. The coffee empire has since expanded, and our favorite location is in the Nations, housed in a former hosiery factory with exposed brick, a beautiful U-shaped bar, and huge windows. It’s a dreamy place to get some work done, and the food matches the digs, with reliably delicious breakfast options like huevos rolandos served with black beans, avocado, and corn tortillas, or the pillowy vanilla-cinnamon french toast. When it comes to drinks, Frothy Monkey offers pretty much anything you can think of, but their spice-forward take on the golden milk latte is a real star." - Bailey Freeman

The Frothy Monkey Review - 12 South - Nashville - The Infatuation

"Walk into Frothy Monkey on any given morning, and you’ll see a slice of the 12 South neighborhood: moms with strollers, students and freelancers on laptops, couples squeezing in a breakfast date, and a bachelorette group recovering from last night. Whichever group you fit into - or if you just need caffeine - you’ll immediately feel at home in this house-turned-coffee-shop. There’s a long menu of coffee drinks and local teas, along with homemade pastries, and more breakfast and lunch options. Cute place for brunch. Easy to find, just a little walk from Broadway. There was a little wait when we went for brunch but here’s shops near by to peruse while you wait. The Havana latte was delicious! And all the food was fantastic. Service was great too. I would definitely recommend checking it out while in Nashville

Google
Came to have some brunch here after looking at the reviews. We were in downtown so it was easy since this was right where we were walking around . The service was great we got a table right away for a Sunday afternoon . We ordered a bagel sandwich and the salmon sandwich . We tried three different coffees . The flannel , the Havana and a caramel latte . The coffee was okay. I couldn’t really taste the caramel and the other two were heavy on the cinnamon . The bagel was not good :( very stale and not flavorful . The Sandwich itself was okay / maybe missing some sauce . The salmon sandwich on the other hand stole the show . It was very good - nice bread , the dill sauce was delicious and it was a thick piece of fish ! :)

Google
I grabbed a to-go order from Frothy Monkey and it was a great experience. The food was fresh and really tasty, and the coffee was smooth and strong, just how I like it. Even though I didn’t dine in, everything was well-packaged and still felt made with care. I’d definitely stop by again for a quick bite and great coffee.

Google
I don’t typically leave reviews, but I was very disappointed by this experience as the place had such good reviews. Waited 35 minutes for our food which was a bagel and a sandwich. Servers were condensing, except for one tall male with dark hair (did not catch his name). We were sat in a back corner, felt forgotten about. Wouldn’t recommend to any visitors from other countries like ourselves, we felt the reviews were misleading to what we experienced.

Google
We didn’t eat, just came in for coffee — and the Havana Latte was absolutely delicious 😋! Smooth, rich, and just the right amount of sweet. Service was friendly and the vibe was great. Perfect spot to relax and enjoy a good cup!

Google
cute little spot for brunch. My friend and i got the monkey mocha and it was great both hot and iced. The staff was very attentive and the food was great. I got the vanilla cinnamon french toast and it was amazing. Definitely a great place to stop for lunch.

Google
I’ve been a few times over the years and it’s always been great! Unique booszie coffee options, healthy options, gluten free options. It’s a fantastic brunch spot. That said, get a reservation. There’s often a wait.

Google
If you’re looking for a really good coffee place that serves a good breakfast, this is your place! Sometimes it’s difficult to get both at the same location, but this place knows their stuff! Every kind of latte, espresso, and really tasty breakfast food. They even had my hard-to-find ginger turmeric latte. It was one of the best I’ve ever had! Parking is on the street. We had the biscuits and gravy. Very tasty and not spicy. Kick it up a notch with their hot sauce. I had to buy some to take home!

Yelp
After a lengthy morning walk in Nashville, I stopped by the Frothy Monkey. The menu showed seasonal drinks, and I couldn't resist! Not busy yet, people are most likely recovering from the night before. A quick order of a bacon, egg and cheese on a biscuit, two drinks and off I went. Service was quick, and friendly with a smile. Food tased great, and drinks were refreshing after a healthy walk. I'll be back to try something new tomorrow. Thank you for the great service!

Yelp
This two story brunch spot is tucked away downtown and it is so adorable. Downstairs were mostly tables for four or more and there were counters/bar top to sit at. I went and sat upstairs and it was like a loft vibe. It was super cute and I got to look outside. It was a rainy day, so it was peaceful. I got the Havana latte with almond milk. It was delicious and a hint of sweetness to it. The sandwich itself was simple yet filling. Eggs can make or break a simple breakfast sandwich and I definitely enjoyed this one. Don't forget the frothy monkey hot sauce! If I could buy it and take it on my carry on, I would. I wonder if they ship the sauce because it was to die for. Overall, service was amazing. Can't complain about the food. I had a great time grabbing breakfast before my next stop in this city.

Yelp
Pros: Communicative and friendly staff: When we arrived, we were told there'd be a wait because the kitchen was overwhelmed. So while there were plenty of open tables, the team was trying to manage the order volume. We opted to wait and meanwhile ordered coffees from their to-go counter. The counter staff and our eventual table server were all good natured. Delicious coffee and food: Our to-go coffees were all delicious. Once we were seated, I ordered a cortado that was absolutely phenomenal and served with a crisp water (not flat but not super sparkling.) We ordered a flight of biscuits to start our brunch and we were all sad that we didn't order more. Around the table, we ordered two different omelettes and two bagel sandwiches. There were many mmms and yums to be heard. The ingredients were fresh and the eggs were cooked perfectly (no sliminess to be found.) Clean and not too loud: For an open room with a lot of hard surfaces, the noise level was tolerable We had a good conversation without having to yell to be heard. The establishment was comfortably clean without being antiseptic. In other words, no weird bleach smells and also no dirty smears or crumbs. Yay! Cons: None. I would totally recommend Frothy Monkey to anyone looking for a well crafted coffee and/or an amazing brunch.

Yelp
It's a short walk from our place to downtown. We started with the biscuits, and the combination of jam and butter was perfect. We tried Lauren's salad, and the dressing and walnuts were wonderful. I also got the Caprese sandwich on a bagel instead of a roll. It was very nice, and we will definitely be back.

Yelp
Love the interior of this cafe! Very vintage like and homey! Very unique cafe however I wish they had more in their menu! There was only one barista at the time and she was very nice and accommodated my last minute oat milk switch because I forgot to mention, but she did really well for our party of 6 orders!

Yelp
Came in for breakfast the other day. Had a drip coffee and biscuits & gravy. Not your ordinary biscuits & gravy though. There was chorizo in this biscuits & gravy dish. The taste was scrumptious. The gravy was nice and creamy. They do egg on top with some cheese and bell peppers. I've had chorizo in bagel before but haven't had it in many breakfast dishes. I liked their take on a familiar dish that gave it a whole new world.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Nice ambiance. Easy to get to and lots of room. Would definitely do this on the regular.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this spot, but my experience was a real disappointment. I ordered the quinoa and black bean burger, and it completely lacked flavor. Just because it's vegetarian doesn't mean it should be bland--this one had no seasoning at all. I've had plenty of house-made veggie burgers at other restaurants that were absolutely superb, but here it felt like they relied entirely on the vegan cheese for flavor. Unfortunately, the cheese itself had a neutral taste, so everything fell flat. Honestly, I tasted more bun than burger. The side salad didn't help either--it was just a standard spring mix with a typical balsamic vinaigrette, nothing memorable. To make matters worse, there wasn't even salt or pepper on the tables; you had to ask for it, which tells me other diners also found the food under-seasoned. The only positive thing I can say is that the customer service was great--the staff were attentive and kind. Unfortunately, the food itself was bland and uninspired. Nashville has plenty of restaurants serving flavorful vegetarian and vegan options, but this just wasn't one of them.

Yelp
Just happened to walk by this place while looking for a place to eat. We're staying close by and saw it while driving by. It's a nice restaurant and serves coffee, teas and food. The service staff were very nice. The food was good and probably the healthiest we ate all the time in Nashville. Lisa had a omelette and I had the smash burger. The coffee was good. The ambiance was very laid back and has a rustic feeling inside. There's a second floor looking out to the street. I'm not sure about parking because we walked from our hotel.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly waiter. Casual seating. They were closing a bit early today for maintenance, but didn't feel rushed. Good breakfast options. I enjoyed the avocado toast; however, wish the bread was a tad bit better and toasted. The bacon was good! What really shined was the coffee. The best cup of the trip!

Yelp
Second time we've been here and it's was just as good this time as the last. Great welcoming staff that make you feel like you're at your local cafe. I had the French Toast thick bread smothered in Black and Blueberries my wife had the Gail Salad (chicken breast, feta, mashed avocados, strawberries Lemon-garlic vinaigrette) and smoked Gouda grits. Both amazing. Next time in Nashville we'll be back.

Yelp
My wife and I sent to Frothy Monkey - The Nations on Sunday, September 27th for breakfast. We went there because we knew we could get a good cup of coffee. However, the food was a colossal dissapointment. The sausgage patties were not fresh at all. I believe had been cooked and refigerated only to be reheated and consequently had the texture of polenta without any flavor. They were black in color. My biscuit was the same. Cooked previsouly only to be reheated but not warm enough to melt the butter served upon it. Other FM locations might be better, but we will not attempt to find out.

Yelp
After receiving a gift card to Frothy Monkey, I decided to place a to go order on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. I ordered the Betsy sandwich (chicken salad sandwich) and a hot latte, and it said it would take 35 minutes. When I arrived, I was pointed to a counter further in the restaurant for pickup. The restaurant was small but cute and staff were friendly. I enjoyed the chicken salad sandwich though I did find it a bit dry. The chips and salsa as a side were great. While I liked the taste of the coffee, it was not very hot. Even though the order said it would take 35 minutes, it seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. I would like to visit again and actually eat in the restaurant.

Yelp
Terrible, overpriced coffee. We spent $11 total for a Golden Monkey Latte and a Pumpkin Spice Latte. The Pumpkin Spice Latte tasted absolutely awful and nothing like Pumpkin Spice. I asked them about this and they had me take my lid off so they can add a lot more syrup. After they added more, it tasted better but still not that great. The Golden Monkey Latte was just okay. The service was also not good. I would never come here again.

Yelp
Highly recommend any of their coffees and their biscuits! We ended up getting more coffee to go. Staff was very kind and attentive. A nice, bright space to grab a bite or get some work done.

Yelp
I was pretty hesitant to try the Frothy Monkey after seeing the lower reviews but we did anyways and I'm so glad! The reviews don't do this restaurant justice and we were really pleased. We arrived after what seemed like a morning rush. The service was wonderful and everyone was really attentive and kind. Everyone was really happy with their meals but the smash burger specifically was absolutely incredible. The meat was tasty, juicy, and seasoned to perfection. Looking forward to our next time in Nashville, aswe'll definitely be back!

Yelp
good coffee, fast service and lots of seating inside. got one of the specials, the Havana latte and it was an interesting flavor profile. great escape from the heat during a shopping day!

Yelp
You only serve coffee. You should have everything, Frappuccino, latte, and any other kind of coffee that a person wants including more sugar-free drinks.

Yelp
We LOVED everything we had here! The coffee drink was spectacular and the biscuit board is a MUST! Service was super warm and friendly
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing! Great atmosphere to the point where you don't want to leave. Food was very tasty. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I wish they could be closer to Wisconsin. Very nice experience

Yelp
Good breakfast close to our hotel. Cali toast yummy! Service was good, ambience casual...

Yelp
Only reason I have 4 and not 5 stars was due to our very poor service :( our waitress was not super kind/welcoming, gave off the impression that she was ready for us to leave (I do understand this is a busy location - but still...bringing us the check as we are taking bites and actively are not close to done...), and forgot 2 of our items which we had to have her remove from the check. ASIDE from service, the ambiance is super cute, and the food and drinks are delicious! I'd return and keep my eye out so as not to have the same waitress (fingers crossed, lol).
google avatar

Yelp
Got the loaded biscuits and chorizo gravy, bruh. This meal was delicious and when I leave Nashville I will leave wanting. If you're looking for a relaxed environment and good eats, this is a spot to try. Decided to be extra chunky and throw on some French toast after I finished the biscuits and gravy as I assume I wouldn't be disappointed. Guess what, I wasn't. Until next time Frothy Monkey, cheers.
google avatar

Lindsey D.

Yelp
Eh, subpar food, location was dirty and we spotted 2 roaches climbing the wall which really gave me the shivers. I got the royale sandwich on sourdough, it was good, salsa and chips as a side is a little interesting. My fiance enjoyed his French toast but said the peaches "tasted off." I wouldn't come here again.
google avatar

Olivia G.

Yelp
I got the vanilla latte and it was probably the best latte I have ever had. The food was great too, all of it was delicious and we only had to wait like 15 minutes. Ambiance was super adorable. The spiral stair case was a cherry on top.
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
Highly recommend this cafe! *Havanna Latte- perfectly blended *The Gail Salad- fabulous chicken *Gouda Grits - cheesy goodness *Chorizo gravy & biscuits- lick the plate yummy *Omlette - generous portion The wait staff was very friendly and helpful but not overbearing. We noticed there was an upstairs which gave additional seating and a cozy feel to the cafe/restaurant. Definitely a good pick for food and coffee here in Nashville!

Sarah E.

Yelp
It took going on 20 minutes to toast 2 bagels to-go. The bagels were poor quality, barely toasted, cold, and stale.
google avatar

Kasey P.

Yelp
Their coffee and espresso top notch! You can taste the passion and propriety of good bean quality in each sip. I ordered a custom drink and they were easily accommodating! Hit the boss and helped me get on with my day. Cute space! I ordered a Caramel vanilla latte (hot)!
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
Don't have any food but the place is cute and the coffee is good! I had the pumpkin spice latte and it wasn't too sweet will definitely come back
google avatar

Yelp
What a great spot! I was in town for a few days and this was on my list of morning coffee spots to try. Walked in and just felt so comfortable. The space is big, but inviting, the folks behind the counter very nice, and my mocha was amazing. It was just sweet enough and the extra hot was indeed extra hot, which made me very happy on a cold morning. I would definitely come back here if I were ever in town again. It is convenient to many hotels and offices downtown.

Grace C.

Yelp
The lattes were amazing, I had the Havana latte and it was one of the best lattes I've ever had. I didn't feel there was many (especially not unique) breakfast options and they were good and cooked well but nothing I'd necessarily return for. My traditional breakfast came with one small piece of toast and an additional piece was $3. Everything tasted good though!
google avatar

Charlice R.

Yelp
Ordered the Salami & Swiss sandwich, it was so good and a chai latte. Loved the spices in the drink. My friends and I spent our brunch eating and doing some work.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
DELISH brunch place, I stumbled upon it looking for some coffee and it was such a good find. I got the biscuit platter with the best butter of my life. It was honey infused, so fresh and cold. And a side of bacon with some grapefruit juice. Delicious!
google avatar

Tabitha D.

Yelp
Great vibe, huge when you walk inside with two floors and plenty of seating. Opens early and stays open till late. Ordered seasonal lattes and breakfast sandwiches as well and they were yummy! Highly recommend the bewitched brown sugar seasonal latte.
google avatar

Dayna C.

Yelp
The food was amazingly good. True southern breakfast with grits and biscuit to go with the eggs and bacon. Our server was very attentive and the food came out fast. The latte and the drip were equally delicious. The old building was a nice setting as well.
google avatar

Leila M.

Yelp
I got the Cali toast (avocado toast) for brunch and it was good! It's what you would expect to taste like with the ingredients. I'd say the balsamic on the salad is what makes this different from the normal avocado/egg toast! I ordered bacon with it and it did not disappoint. If we are nit picking, I would prefer the salad on the toast instead of on the side. They also have GF bread for celiac. My boyfriend who is GF and DF was able to get the barbacoa tacos with vegan cheese. He said it was really good! He just likes it crispy and it was on the softer side. Service was good, not too much traffic. Got a seat next to the window and just watched the world go by :) overall pleasant experience.
google avatar

Laken B.

Yelp
Super cute spot! I stopped by in the am and it packed! I walked out cause it was too crowded. If you are ordering a drink only, it's the same lines as the food which is a con if you are trying to get in and out. THEY HAVE GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS!!! AND THEY WERE SO GOOD!! I also had a latte which was extremely good BUT. A but expensive-$7 is a lot for this drive but it was a fair size. Very busy local spot but I see why.. it's cute, in a great location and good! Street packing. It's in downtown so hit or miss-I walked.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Best breakfast place I had when visit Nashville. To begin with the host was extremely friendly and helpful with recommendations on coffee. As soon as she seated me the server came around to take my order. The coffee was delicious and the best I had tried yet. The breakfast I ordered was cooked to perfection. Bacon was thick and crispy, sourdough bread was delicious and the grits were great. I went on a Saturday and it was busy so I suggest going early if you don't want to wait
google avatar

Natasha P.

Yelp
The coffee is the fantastic and we will definitely be coming back to get some to go. The latte with Rosemary honey was my favorite. The one with condensed milk and cinnamon was good too. The food was disappointing. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits and they were so salty it was almost inedible. There was supposed to be andouille sausage in it too but we did not get any. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. It was good but it was barely warm when it came to the table. I think there are better places to brunch in Nashville.

Karin G.

Yelp
Came in because I heard this was a spot to go to. Coffee was delicious, but the people working the counter were not very friendly. To me, the customer service is brought my rating down.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Monday morning per a friends recommendation. The staff was super friendly. I ordered the Havana latte as it has been their most popular and the barista was able to make it half sweet and less hot so I could drink it right away. The chocolate croissant pastry also had a brilliant shine, but unfortunately, I was not hungry yet and didn't try.

Makinley H.

Yelp
Great food and charming spot. The service was ok, I was impressed how none of them needed to write down orders. Great seasonal fall drinks
google avatar

Mckinzie C.

Yelp
The Golden Monkey Latte was a 10/10. We ordered to go but would visit again for this drink.

Yelp
First time in nashville and this place caught my eye. Got just a cold brew but it was some of the best tasting cold brew I've had. Good service too!

Yelp
It was so hot. I had to go in somewhere. and ended, here Frosty Monkey. Some girl was suggesting, I should get food first then sit down..etc. at the cashier I ordered ice tea and blueberry muffin. I got both while I was at the counter. So fast. The girl was suggesting I should sit upstairs or something. I walked into the back, sat one of many empty tables. Ice tea was so good! Bluberries in muffin also. I didn't want to go out into the hot. So I went to the cashier ordered Farm Breakfast which caught my eyes with Kentucky farm fresh eggs, etc. Then I asked any other than black tea if they have. Got answer No. With my second black tea I went back to my table. And wait. There seemed many staffs around counter. When I approached them they were asking me again again same things like whether I was ordering food, online order, etc. I told a few times I ordered my food at the counter earlier . One lady took me to the cashier to make sure I ordered, I think. I even pointed the guy who took my order. She showed me many order slips in front of kitchen and told me wait until my name was called. I was ready to get up ask again. That time a young guy sans Monkey tees on, came to me with a big brown paper bag . What's inside? It's cool inside of this cute trendy looking café. Bathroom was clean. Food was pretty good. Free Wifi with email address giving. Ende Gut Alles Gut!

Yelp
A really cute breakfast cafe/coffee shop with lots of breakfast/lunch options and sit-down and take-out options. When you walk in, they'll ask if you want coffee to-go or want to sit-down. As it's next door to Starbucks, Frothy Monkey can make an easy way to support local without having to go too far out of your way. I came craving an Omelet, but I wasn't super impressed with the one here. The omelet I had the next two breakfasts at other establishments really hit the craving. PROS: -One of the few places in this part of town displaying a gigantic Pride banner in its window. -I love how wholesome this place is. It *feels* like it's good for you and the Earth. They list out all of their local farms where they source their ingredients, and they have a note about being fair trade with fair wages. Everyone working there seemed like they were friends with one another, and there was lots of laughter. -Gigantic portions. When the omelet description said "made with 2 eggs", I figured I had better get an additional side. The omelet plus the included side of bread was MORE than enough to keep me full for 7 hours, though, and I definitely didn't need the additional side. -Service was really fast - and when I wanted to order a coffee to-go to end out my meal here, they easily managed that as the final part of my order. CONS: -They don't add much salt/pepper to their food, BUT they offer it for your table when your food is delivered. You can add your own seasoning to taste. Oh, and they offer hot sauce too - if you're the type of person who really wants to burn your mouth first thing in the morning. -My omelet came with my choice of a bread. I chose a biscuit. It was served cold - which was a really wild flavor compared to usual biscuits. -Omelet itself was just okay too. It was a bit light on the veggies and internal bits, tasting mostly like the egg itself. Depends on how you like your omelet.

Yelp
The workers are so sweet and welcoming! The restaurant was packed but decorated so cute! I definitely recommend going early and getting a table! The matcha & sandwich I had was perfect!

Yelp
Was leaving town after a fun Nashville weekend and needed a coffee pick me up. This place was convenient so we stopped by for coffees to go. Once I walked in I regretted that we weren't having breakfast here! Everything that people were eating looked delicious. But alas, coffees only. Had a latte and a turtle coffee (chocolate and caramel). Quite yummy! Next time, we are eating!
