The Best Takeout Options From Long-Standing Montreal Food Counters | Eater Montreal

"From arancini to gravlax, the kitchens tucked in the back of Milano’s sprawling premises produce meals for one (think grilled chicken with pasta, or veal Milanese with roast potatoes), and charcuterie party platters for many. Counters with prepared foods dot the store, so keep an eye peeled to find marinated octopus salad, risotto ready to (h)eat, and classic supermarket roast chicken." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

I love coming here for some quality cheese or balsamic to give a meal that little extra. Always well stocked and organized. Sometimes the produce moves around and I do not find the same thing I need so that's challenging, but never an issue with quality!

Google
Classic Italian foods are here, in this little Italy district in Montreal. Gorgeous. As their information indicated, "Providing our community with top-quality Italian goods since 1954. Located in Little Italy, Montreal" I really agree. I strolled inside the store and lots of authenticate italian groceries on display. They taste really good. It provides great nostalgic sentiment to those who are traveling or immigranting to Monreal. In terms of price, it is to my surpise, they are not bad at all. Compared to the same items in other places, the prices here are not really bad. Highly recommended for those Italian food lovers.

Google
Friendly grocers that will even speak a few words of Italian with you and help you find exactly which shape of pasta you need. Also got some Taralli from Puglia, prosciutto, burrata etc. Always fun. Grazie Milano!

Google
I would give this place 10 stars if I could! It's packed with reasonably priced fruits and vegetables, cheese and meats, but is also an Italian product extravaganza. If you can't find it here, you won't find it anywere. It's worth the drive if you're not local to Little Italy. A real gem!

Google
Great place for local and imported goods at very affordable prices. Love having this spot so close by! Thank you for all the delicious food we’ve had over the years.

Google
So many great products here you can find. It's well organized and clean. It's pricey tho, but some stuff are worth it.

Google
🌮 🥙 This Italian supermarket at heart of little Italy, there are many different Italian products, lots of home made pastas and delicious foods. We had a pleasant shopping experience.

Google
Lots of veggies and fruits. Not much choice for food. We tried egg tart, tarayaki balls, samosas. Taste is good, i am too hungry to take photos. Taste is alright, I think price is a bit high.

Yelp
This is what my Italian dreams are made of. Fresh mozzarella, handmade pasta, sliced to order porchetta, I could literally die a happy woman at Milanos. The Italian grocery store recently expanded, almost doubling in size. It's located in be heart of little Italy, and honestly one of my favourite weekend spots to visit. All the staff speak Italian and they carry many hard to find Italian must haves. Yes it gets crazy busy, but honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yelp
Wonderful Italian grocery store about a 10 min walk from Marchè Jean Talon. Milano's is a very large, well stocked; very diverse store selling, fresh, frozen products, canned goods, produce, coffee, meats, seafood, deli items and prepared foods. The variety of brand names of imported Italian tomatoes, pasta and cheeses is staggering. Needless to say Milano's will always be on my list of stops when I'm in Montréal.

Yelp
This Italian grocery store is so like the grocery stores we shopped in when living in Italy we got super excited. OMG all the groceries! I have no idea what the rule is about bringing packaged foods back to the U.S., but I wanted to buy so much stuff I used to keep in my Italian pantry! Next visit to Montreal we plan to stay in the Little Italy area and shop here on day one. Even if we have to eat it all before we leave town. We literally stumbled upon this grocery store. Established in 1954, two brothers introduced Montreal to Italian products. Today their children have taken over and it seems to be a very popular neighborhood market based on the number of customers shopping during our visit. Bakery, deli, meat counter, dairy, produce. All the sections you expect in a traditional grocery store. The breakfast sweets. The Chocolate. Whole rabbit in the meat counter. So much pasta! Oil, balsamic, sauce. I just need to go back. If you cook Italian, you should be shopping here. Actually, if you eat, you should shop here.

Yelp
Milano is a slice of heaven on earth! I found so many wonderful items I couldn't possibly list them all! On my last visit I purchased freshly housemade, Milano Tomato & Basil Sauce, and some Milano Cheese & Spinach Cannoli. I put the Cannoli in a pan topped with the sauce put it in the oven and and 30 minutes later I had the most delightful meal! So Delicious! Also, couldn't resist some fresh paper thin slices of prosciutto! Staff are always very helpful! Love this place!

Yelp
What an Italian Gem in Montreal! This store has 3 main rooms with everything Italian so far as fruit, vegetables, pastries, super deli-with already made sandwiches or you can order (but they are NOT fast, be forewarned), pasta, spices, canned goods, crackers, candies, olive oils, vinegars, espresso machines, dishes... to name just what I can remember! We spent at least an hour going thru it! My friend was so excited to find some cookies she had in Italy she hadn't been able to find in Florida-matter of fact she went back for more before we left the street! We tried to order a mortadella sandwich and mixed salamis sandwich but the deli was so busy (and slow) we left. Went had lunch, came back and was able to get them! Hurray!

Yelp
As much as I love this in theory, this place is just too chaotic and disjointed for me. This place has grown and renovated over the years but still very difficult to grab what you need and go. Some negatives are lack of prices on expensive items like olive oil, pannetones that are all over the place and lack of help. It's built in width so that explains a lot, so the sides such as fruits and veggies section are not as busy. All is forgiven once past the long lineup: cold cuts, condiments de luxe and cheese are in your cloth bag, waiting to picnic the afternoon away with a baguette from nearby Marguerita

Yelp
If you want anything at all imported from Italy this is the place to go! They have a zillion kinds of pasta 1 trillion kinds of olive oil, truffle products cheese, amazing cheese. Products you didn't even know you could get from Italy. It is a family owned business and institution in Montreal has been here since 1959 I think best and first stop when I come to Montreal to visit is this place. Parmesan with flavor you can't imagine.. and don't get me started on the deli or fresh olive and sandwich bar.. if you were looking for a unique gift for a person who has everything, or you just want to have all the flavors of Italy yourself this is the place to come. You will not be disappointed, enjoy yourself!

Yelp
A lot of great product and variety. Some of my all-time Italian favourite foods can be found here! They also have a small selection of home and kitchen appliances which is really convenient.

Yelp
OMG, what a shockingly amazing grocery store, specializing in gourmet Italian fare. My Italian foodie relatives were showing me around Little Italy and they noted that they often shop in this store, as it "has everything". We went in to browse and I was amazed at the huge selection of gourmet pastas and oils and humongous wheels and wheels of cheeses and sauces and all foods Italian. Stuff I'd never seen before, too: handmade rainbow noodles, cheeses in huge and odd shapes (along with the biggest electric cheese grater I've ever seen in my life!), Italian pastries and chocolates I've never heard of...... Of course, we all ended up buying some things; now can you not?! Note: I'd have categorized this store as semi-pricey ($$$), as items are imported or homemade and focus on the gourmet. But it's worth it! If you know someone who likes to cook (or eat) Italian foods, this would be the go-to place to get him or her gifts.

Yelp
Oh wow! I did not check Yelp for this market when I went wandering through Little Italy, but it looked interesting so I thought I'd pop in and see what it's all about. This cute little Italian fruit shop is actually HUGE! I mean, I believe it spanned almost the entire block. I fell in love with the olive oil and vinegar section. There is an amazing selection! Fresh house made pasta.... fresh produce, a pastry section. Of course, I was staring at the cannolis longer than I should have. There was a line at the butcher counter with amazing looking cuts of meat. Between this and Marche Jean Talon, made me wish I lived in Little Italy.
google avatar

Serge N.

Yelp
A good variety of imported products you won't likely find at traditional grocery stores, including Italian Nutella. Nothing there is cheap though, there's no particular reason why you should get your prime rib steak there as opposed to a proper butcher shop. Overall the staff's attitude ranges from indifferent to condescending. I'm very disappointed by the fact they do fake price drops (aka: products that didn't change price but we're gonna stick a "special" sticker anyway)
google avatar

Yelp
Don't come here on a Monday Morning. Nothing will be ready!!! Wow. So disappointed. I'm never coming shopping here first thing on Monday morning again. The Bread I like isn't ready...no Italian Sausage until 11am? What the hell? Wasted a morning in the Rain. Learned my lesson. Graci Milano.

Yelp
5 stars to best italian super market in the city. Veggies and fruits always fresh. Great selection of Italian products including desserts, wine, meat, pasta and many other ingredients and condiments

Yelp
Really impressed with how awesome this Italian grocer is. I was in awe with their selections, it truly felt like the international experience!

Yelp
excellent customer service. i had been looking for a specific bread from l'art du blanc bakery .. amazing breads by the way. and finally talked to the bakery person.. well they ordered 2 loaves for me , called me and also found me a loaf in the freezer downstairs that day. very happy have been going here for years its a montreal gem.

Yelp
I love this place for their incredible selection of Italian products - from foodstuffs to cleaning products, shower gels and breath mints - straight from the motherland. I can spend hours perusing and their balsamic vinegar selection is second to none (i'm partial to berry-infused balsamic!). I walked in this weekend lured by their equally impressive display of Italian pannettone. A little pricey but worth it for quality and availability of imported goods!
google avatar

Yelp
Just to keep it real - I grabbed some food from the prepared eats section last night and was seriously disappointed. The eggplant parma was $7 and pretty much just tasted of the oil it was swimming in. Of course I still love it here for the cheese section, and the meats, and the delicious pickled things. But on this one occasion dinner from Milano was a let down, so I'm docking a star.

Yelp
I love it here. Even when it is busy. Their are jus too many good options for food....do not come when you are hungry or you will by everything. I always pick up cheese - what a huge selection. I always pick up sliced meats, great price. And of course we pick up Al the Italian standards, pickled eggplant, olives, pasta....etc. PS - they even have fresh pasta maison

Yelp
I accidentally discovered Milano when I was 5 minutes late getting to Anatol which is just up the road. I was on the phone with my best friend and I had a five minute attack of amazement describing everything. This place is huge - it's like a block long and crammed with stuff. Their selection is amazing. I think they sell over a hundred (easily) varieties of balsamic vinegar alone. Multiple varieties of buffalo mozzarella, fresh pasta, dried fruit. If it's Italian, they have it. If you're a one-stop shopper, which I am not, they also have a good selection of produce, but nothing organic (unsurprising for Montreal). Go! You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
What an awesome grocery store! I came here after I tried out the Blood Orange Mimosa at Sparrow and eyed them making it with Blood Orange juice from a brand called "Santal" by Parmalat (yeah, the same milk people). Turns out Parmalat has international brands not readily available here but after doing a search ( yeah, I'm that kind of a geek and when I get fixated on something, I'm pretty dogged in finding out as much as I can) someone on Chowhound mentioned you can get Blood Orange juice here. So I came and found it, and so much more. This has to be one of the better grocers in the city. Probably the best grocer for Italian foods and brands (including Italian laundry detergent!). Aisles of tomato paste, pasta sauces, pasta (fresh, store made or manufactured), a crazy cheese counter, a bakery counter and an excellent butcher, displays of panettone, and of course fresh fruits and veggies. I have to come back and take my time just to see all the brands and unique things other places don't carry.

Yelp
This is our go-to spot when we come to Montreal for fresh pasta, sauce, olives, espresso and other great Italian delights.

Yelp
The heaven of the Italian produce, how could I forget to write a review about Fruiterie Milano! Right to left starts my tour every time I'm entering the wonderful store. Major highlights: pasta brands and shapes you would not find in the regular supermarket; overwhelmingly abundant shelves of vinegars and olive or other oils; the dream land of panettone, which indeed should be available in a store called Milano (panettone has Milanese origins); Italian cheeses you haven't heard about, they will grate your piece for you if required; home made pasta, gnocchi and the best pizza dough in town; coffee brands as Kimbo; the endless choices of cantocinni; home made pesto; San Marzano canned tomatoes of DOP quality at reasonable prices; actually everything is more reasonably priced at Milano. Ok, there are many more amazing culinary treasures you can obtain at Milano that I may have forgotten to mention. Just go there every time you are in Little Italy and check for yourself whats new, it is a real pleasure!

Yelp
Their selection is pretty good. They have a good variety of Italian products such as canned tomatoes, pastas, drinks like San Pellegrino, etc, etc. They also sell Nutella imported from Italy which if you have ever tasted you'll know that it's much better then what is made here. Pricewise they aren't the best and if you know where to go you can get the same goods for less. I must say their butcher shop is really good. Their sausages are very flavourful and go well on the grill. I particularly like the spicy ones as they have a nice kick to them. The cheese counter also has an excellent selection.

Yelp
Location: On the main, in the heart of Little Italy. Bonus: you get to play a game of 'Which door lets me into this place?' And... you can only pick one - no cheating! The place: I could write a very long list of what you'll find here but in the interest of time, I'll keep it short. Italian stuff - that's what you'll find here. They have an enormous selection of fresh and dried pasta, Italian cookies and pastries, olives, olive oil, Italian meats and CHEESE. There's more of course, but you'll have to go check the place out for yourself. Now, let's get back to the fromage, shall we? Being of Italian descent, it's probably not surprising that I LOVE Italian cheese; in particular, Mozzarella di Bufala and Burrata. Milano is the only place that I've found thus far, that carry Burrata, and I couldn't help but do a happy dance at this serendipitous discovery. Not to worry though - if Italian cheese isn't your thing, they have a ton of other varieties to choose from. Service: The place is a bit of a zoo. Just remember that if you're looking to get anything in bulk (olives, cold cuts, some cheeses), you need to take a number at the counter - but the queue moves pretty quickly. There aren't too many clerks on the floor, but while I was checking out the pastas, I started talking to this awesome fellow, who, when he found out that I was going to Italy in June, started speaking to me in Italian to help me 'practice.' He also offered a few pieces of very sound advice that consisted of things not to do while in Italy. He was a most awesome clerk. Price: I would say prices are average. I think it depends what you buy - some items may be more expensive than other places while others are not.

Yelp
This is an AMAZING grocery store. Excellent selection of cheeses, meats, fresh pastas and more. If you are in Little Italy, hungry and craving a delicious prosciutto sandwich, this place makes the best! Grab a Panini at the front cash, head over to the deli counter, take a number and they'll make you one of the best sandwiches you've ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best Italian markets outside of Italy. An incredible assortment of foods (naturally!) but also personal care items -- soaps, shampoos, toothpastes -- directly from Italy. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is super helpful. Wish we could import one of these to NYC.
google avatar

marie-eve l.

Yelp
The real italian deal. When I want to prepare the best pasta meal, I come here. Products are fresh and there is products you can't find elsewhere (all kinds of italian cheese, olives, olives oil, pasta fresh or dry, italian cakes and cookies and more). You want good grinded coffee for your espresso machine? They have a lot of variety in here, Lavazza is my best one!
google avatar

Mathieu B.

Yelp
All big cities in North America has at least 1 big italian grocery. This is one italian grocery. LOTS of imported product from Italy. Some friendly italian staff, great service at the meat counter. Looking for a gnocchis spoon?A really great Pasta Machine, a large size of choices for Pannetone, tadadadada, There's every italian thing you can find in an Italian grocery!
google avatar

D'Arcy L.

Yelp
Awesome place for all your Italian food needs in Montreal! I'm really digging the expansion! If owners are reading please get some more tasty prepared food! We hard working people don't have time to cook in our busy/lazy lives! A great place to stock up on cheese, dried pasta and everything else from the "boot country" in between!
google avatar

Frédéric L.

Yelp
Impressive selection of fresh pasta, endless choices of cheese and cooking ingredients. The best of Italy !!!!! The only thing is the frozen microwave pizza and some generic products takes away authenticity
google avatar

Jinko G.

Yelp
An Italian food paradise ---- wide variety, good quality and competitive prices. Shopping here is like in an Italy super market. It's abundant with fresh deli selection of prepared foods and meats, cheeses, pasta, bread and etc... It's a great store whether you're a regular, for a special occasion, or a tourist. I wished there were more stores like this outside of Italy.

JG G.

Yelp
Great grocery store! Incredible selection of meats, cheeses, pastas,... Their prepared dishes are very nice,e.g.,osso bucco, lamb shanks, and given the amount of time it takes to normally prepare these, we'll worth the price. Great selection of fresh pasta, pizza dough, cheeses, oils, fruits and vegetables at very competitive prices. Their meats are a bit on the high side. Must go to place

Andrea B.

Yelp
I asked my fiancé to take me to Milano's after reading the one English review. He is of Italian descent, a native of Montréal and is a superb cook; I am a foodie and also an accomplished cook. We were both delighted by what we saw at this Italian grocery! The prices are very good, particularly for Montréal and the selection is amazingly good. With Marché Jean Talon just around the corner, it makes a terrific shopping excursion for a Saturday morning. (He said that just watching my face light up when I discovered something in stock that I had been searching for was fun.) The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. I can't wait to return!

Sam A.

Yelp
If you're looking for amazing Italian food items Milano is your heaven. I can spend hours wandering this store. Such great items. Love this place! Fair prices, fantastic service and exceptional items are in store for you.

Richard H.

Yelp
Fantastic Italian market. The deli and prepared dishes look delicious, and strolling through the well-stocked market makes me wish I had the opportunity to drop by a place like this in my own hometown.

Yelp
they had what I came for; the staff was courteous and helpful. glad I made the effort to go there!
