"Tonkatsu, seafood, vegetables—select the ingredients of your choice and the kitchen will prepare an original ‘mix fry’ just for you. As the name says, this is the ‘fry house’. Daytime fare consists of set meals of a variety of items. In the evening, multi-course prix fixe is the theme, with each morsel fried and served fresh. In a couple of unique twists, different types of breadcrumbs are used, depending on the main ingredient, and some items are fried in lard while others are fried in sesame oil. Chicken tenderloin is fried at a low heat carefully calculated to cook every part of the meat." - Michelin Inspector

Tonkatsu Fry-ya is located in a non-descript basement about a 5 minute walk from the station. Honestly, you'd never notice it unless are looking for it intentionally. Decor inside is quite simple and functional. The real focus is on the food--and that is simply wonderful! I got the lunch platter that allows 3 choices of meats. I chose the cutlet, beef hamburger, and roast beef. The meal included also a generous serving of fried chicken breast. Focus here is on serving exceptionally tender, flavorful meat. Breading is crispy but lighter than most tonkatsu restaurants. All of the cuts were served more rare than I expected. Even the chicken breast was slightly pink. In this case, I'll trust the expertise of the chef. The meats were the tenderest I've ever had. Michelin rating is well-deserved! We went for an early lunch and had no trouble getting a table. You may want to reserve for busy times. Set menu was 2600 yen.

Who’d have thought that multiple courses of fried dishes would make for a wonderful and varied dinner. Fry-Ya do, and they cook each and every dish perfectly. If you get a chance to, sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare each course with care and precision… timing the cooking of each course by the second, using an array of timers by the fryer. It’s in a basement but the restaurant itself is cosy, with friendly and attentive staff. Add it to the list if you’re in town.

I agreed with most of the favorable review comments on the fried foods served. The only negative comment is that we don’t eat chicken, and they won’t offer a vegetarian alternative for it. For me, I only need to taste fried foods once.

OCT 2024 Visited here for dinner and had the 13 course menu consisting of a variety of fried panko coated meat, seafood and vegetable dishes cooked and served one at a time, cabbage, salad sticks, pork shabu shabu, curry and dessert. Most of the dishes were tasty, panko was crispy and sticks perfectly, tonkatsu was great but surprisingly the chicken tenderloin might be my favorite. The fried mushroom and sea eel were also pretty good. The horse mackerel roll has potential but it has too much sauce and pickle, couldn't taste much of the fish. Least favorite was the pork shabu-shabu which was quite tough to chew. Overall it was nice to try a variety of fried panko dishes. However if you want to choose specific fried dishes then lunch will be more flexible and cost effective.

We went on a Tuesday night and there was no queue for 2 pax. I ordered a 3 piece set meal, and it came with salad, chicken cutlet, rice and miso soup. The salad and miso soup were really delicious. I personally really enjoyed the ebi and conger eel katsu. The handmade tartar (or egg mayo) sauce really complemented the ebi! Great service and great food at affordable price range. Would love to be back!

The place is very chill. We only had to wait a few minutes before we were seated for lunch. Everything was cooked with precision. It is indeed a very unique tonkatsu experience.

Stumbled upon this restaurant while exploring Takadanobaba and was surprised with the intimate seating inside. The place can accommodate 16 customers at a time and has 2 tables with 4 seats each. It was like we found a hidden gem as we were the only foreigners in a full house. We enjoyed our meal as we shared scallops, shrimp, tenderloin, menchi cuts. The 3 fry comes with a starter of salad and soup with a first “fry” chicken breast. The chicken was tender and not dry at all. We were also guided with the different sauces and their accompanying pair. We are happy with the service we received from our server who thanked us in our language. A first during our trip. This is a must try when in tokyo for the good food and service.

Really fantastic omakase course of fried food. Pork cutlet was to die for. Surprise dish for me was the Horse Mackerel sando. It deserves its Michelin Bib.
