Iconic Dishes in Philly | Eater Philly

"Philly’s Vietnamese community is one of the largest on the East Coast, originating from about 300 refugee families who settled in Philly in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The family that owns Fu Wah Mini Mart was one of those, and they’ve been serving banh mi since they opened in 1982. which they also refer to as Vietnamese hoagies in a nod to Philly’s love of anything in a long roll. They do a variety of different fillings, but try the tofu version, which became popular in the 1980s among hippies in West Philly, and has remained so ever since." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

The Best Hoagies in Philly | Eater Philly

"While debates rage over whether a banh mi is technically a hoagie (in our estimation, yes, absolutely), at Fu-Wah Mini Market in Cedar Park, you luckily don’t have to decide. That’s because the market sells an impressive list of excellent banh mi and hoagies, like Italian, salami, and mixed cheese varieties. It’s a local favorite for good reason." - Dayna Evans

BEST TOFÜ HOAGIE EVER! Only $6.50 and worth every penny. They’ve got a ton of other menu items. Also they have many different products (noodles, ice cream, fruits fresh produce and fresh bread) and household essentials. Owners are also friendly. Really lovely overall and good prices too. will definitely come back!

I’ve always felt my favorite banh mi spots were in north and south Philly. Oh my I’ve found another amazing spot located in the cedar park neighborhood of west Philly. Order the classic with pate and extra mayo, something about their mayo sauce mix, with every bite it got better and better 🤤🤤

Google
Tofu > pork I’ve had both but the tofu was so good I’ll keep getting that one Love this store and it’s quirkiness Edit: credit cards accepted

Google
Roast pork Banh Mi ALWAYS hits, and I love the items they stock their market with.

Google
Never a friendly experience with the store clerk. No one Who isn’t happy to be of service should work in the service industry. Food is underwhelming and overpriced. Hoagies are skimpy and flavorless. The store carries other good items, so I’ll stick to those. Good luck!

Google
A neighborhood favorite mini market with excellent deli sandwiches including the renowned Vietnamese Pork or Tofu Banh-Mi. Most basic grocery staples are in stock amongst the small isles.

Google
Char grilled pork (order extra cilantro) was delicious and smoky and satisfying!! Store was well curated, grab some giant fresh ginger root to bring home!

THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY. You're welcome. The ATM fee is $1.80, otherwise. A friend of mine raves about the tofu hoagies here. I've tried them a couple times now -- just under $5 for a sandwich is pretty good, but I wish it had more veggies. It's mostly sweet fried tofu, with a little carrot/daikon, cilantro, and a few big slices of jalapeno (which try as might, I cannot take a bite out of without burning my lips off --- you can ask them to hold the peppers but there's nothing to balance all the sweetness without it!). My husband likes the tuna salad hoagie -- it's double the size for $7 (unfortunately they don't upsize the tofu one, I've asked). The couple times he's had it it's been pretty soggy, tho. We're feeling so-so about the hoagies, but will keep going back because of the convenience/price. The market itself is very sweet. Loads of interesting organic, gourmet, and pan-asian grocery items, including dark chocolate candy bars, quality soba noodles, vegan meat substitutes, and baking ingredients. I haven't seen any organic produce here. Prices can be steep but it's nice to have this type of stuff in the 'hood. The outdoor seating area is pretty adorable, too.

Yelp
Upon the advice of a regular in the neighborhood, I called in my order for Fu-Wah Mini Market's Chargrilled Pork bánh mì "with everything", which includes jalapeños, and went in to pick it up. Midday on a Friday, there was street parking available nearby and I was told that there is a municipal lot behind the market. The market has some interesting offerings (e.g., unusual types of chips), service was quick ($10.00 CC minimum), and the bánh mì was tasty--great chew on the roll and delicious pickled veggies.

Yelp
Got a quick tofu bahn mi here. It was out in less than 5 minutes and tasted fresh and delicious! Great sandwich for just $7!

Yelp
The one thing you can't help but love about this local grocer is all of the support from the community and the welcoming atmosphere inside, no matter how crowded it gets! I called my order in on a busy Tuesday during lunch because I knew the line was going to be crazy. Lol When I arrive there were at least 15 or so hungry customers waiting for their sandwiches and other food items. The owner usually works alone at the front, so they are quite busy trying to answer the phone and running the registered at the same time. The food was still ready within a 15-minute window and just as tasty as usual. My tofu bahn mi was a tad dry but the bread and tofu itself were quite flavorful. I also ordered some sea salt chips to accompany the sandwich which was a great choice lol My favorite part was just exchanging some friendly banter with the owner who was honored to have the good problem of running the register and fulfilling orders over the phone.

Yelp
Quick and fairly priced banh mi! My banh mi had so much of their house made sauce, so I would order less if you're not into sauces. I got the grilled pork banh mi and the meat was deliciously marinated and well cooked! It had the perfect ratio of pickled veggies too.

Yelp
My go to in philly for BANH mi sandwiches. When I come over bridge from nj I like to treat myself somewhere if time permits. I Ordered the tofu ones for me and sis. Delicious, but could've used a tiny bit more of the mayo/spread they use. This location his a mini market as well, with lots of grocery items, fresh produce, frozen foods, drinks, cleaning products, pet foods, you name it.

Yelp
I've had tofu banh mi all over town and this was the most tasteless one. Came home and added mayo and balsamic vinegar for a jolt.
google avatar

Teddy E.

Yelp
I like the banh mi here, but I probably would not bother to come if it were not near my house. Chargrilled pork is pretty good. The main thing holding this back is that the roll is a pretty garden variety Philly hoagie roll compared to a really true banh mi baguette. Service is pretty surly, but if you call ahead, the sandwich will usually be ready so you can run in and out quickly.

Yelp
Banh Minh: 4.5 out of 5 My partner and I have been here at least 3 times now just for their Vietnamese sandwiches! By God this place consistently delivers. We've had the charcoal pork, classic pork, & roast pork, all of which deliver that nostalgic feeling when I eat it. Price is reasonable for what they deliver. I love the charcoal pork so much I ordered two sandwiches that same day! Service: 4 Out 5 Meh, not terrible. Cash register guy could be more friendlier. Overall: 4.5 Out of 5 Would be a perfect 5 but the cash register guy has been borderline rude all 3 times we've been here.

Yelp
I'm not sure if Fu Wah's banh mis are the most authentic or if people who grew up eating these sandwiches would like the ones here, but I certainly like them. I always order the chargrilled pork sandwich. The meat is what I like about the banh mi most. It has a smoky, sweet, savory flavor, and the meat is always juicy, and somewhat fatty. Idk it just tastes good to me! The Vietnamese mayo spread is also creamy and decadent (I sometimes actually sometimes ask for extra on the side LOL), and the crisp pickled veggies add some sourness and tang. They also fill the sandwich with a good amount of cilantro and spicy jalapeno slices that are always seasoned with black pepper! If you eat the sandwich fresh, the bread has the right amount of crustiness for my personal liking. For context, in general, I kinda like banh mi bread when it's on the crustier, more baguette-y side because... I just prefer that kind of bread for banh mis (as opposed to super soft roll-like bread). But if you let the sandwich sit too long before eating, and the sandwich gets cold, the bread can get reallyyyy hard... Like... scraping-the-roof-of-your-mouth level of hard... So I docked points off there! One of the biggest pros, though, is the convenience of this spot! I can call in an order, pick it up ten minutes later, and enjoy! FYI, they are cash only, but there's a vending machine inside!

Connor M.

Yelp
The banh mi here is so good, but the guy at the counter is so, so unpleasant. After this last time, when they also messed up my order, I really don't want to go back.
google avatar

Shantell P.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Vietnamese hoagies, and I'll probably stick to the wraps. Firstly, I like fresher breads. This bread was cut your gums crusty. Usually bread that tough comes with some sort of jam or spread. But anywho. You could get bitcoin while you wait on your crunchy salad on bread. The sandwich was very pricey considering the other nearby locations and they are cash only for the food but not for the other items. It was more of an inconvenience and I ended up stopping for Chinese food and giving my hoagie away

Yelp
This used to be my favorite bahn mi place. I was a regular from 2012-2016. But after a string of horrible experience, I haven't been back since. First, I got so sick after eating a hoagie here - had food poisoning for 3 days. Obviously, I thought it was a fluke since I didn't have any issues for the past 4 years. I went back as usual, but strike 2 - I found some strands of short, grey animal fur on my meat! Ok, but I've been coming here for years and never had an issue, so it still must be a fluke. So silly me, I still went back a few weeks later, and this time, I saw A RAT running around the aisles. A grey rat with rodent fur the same color and length as the kind I found in my hoagie previously. Well, that did it. I no longer frequent this place anymore. It was tasty and easy on the wallet for those 4 years, but due to cleanliness and sanitary issues, I haven't returned since.

Yelp
Dave and Tammy do such a good job at Fu-Wah. The Bahn Mi are great, especially their famous (in West Philly!) marinated tofu which you can also buy by the pint. The store itself is always very well stocked with excellent ingredients and if they ever don't have anything in stock, just ask Dave and he'll give you the lowdown on when it's going to be back in stock.

Kirsten T.

Yelp
I DoorDash and had a pick up order here it smelled so great I decided to come back and get something to try! The bahn mi was really greatly priced and they gave the tofu some extra care (this is rare). So good! Also great snack and drink options. Very friendly and quick service as well :)
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
Probably the best banh mi I've had in Philly. And only $6. You can't go wrong here. The staff were super friendly as well. Definitely will be returning when i happen to be in West Philly.

Yelp
I was craving a good vegetarian sandwich and after some serious googling, I stumbled upon this place. I kept seeing people sing praises about the Tofu Banh-mi hoagie sandwich. So I decided to check it out. It is a very unassuming little deli. And they're cash only. So, bring cash if you don't want to pay $1.50 to use the ATM in the store. I went in and placed my order of the Banh mi tofu hoagie at the counter and the guy didn't take my money then, so I wandered around the little market and waited for the sandwich crafter to make me mine. Ten minutes later, my sandwich was all wrapped and ready to go. So I paid for it and was on my way. When I got home and tried it. It blew my mind. The tofu was so flavorful and all the ingredients worked so well together and was a party in my mouth. I gobbled up my whole sandwich and was sad that it was over. All this deliciousness for $5. That is a win in my book. I will definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a delicious hearty inexpensive meal. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

Yelp
For a mini mart, this place has it going on. You can find some amazing speciality items like organics and plant based items. I especially like the little Korean bean cakes and tofu hoagies. The hoagies are FuWah's own spin on a Vietnamese hoagie: marinated tofu, cilantro, shredded carrots, and jalapeños on a torpedo roll. They are a neighborhood classic. I can remember getting these as far back as 2009, so I imagine they've been around even longer.
google avatar

Charlie E.

Yelp
Good for the price. Nothing special about the banh mis here, but there are the best in the area besides for places in Center City and Roxborough. Good meat, spicy jalapeño, crispy baguette for cheap. Mi n tea has higher quality banh mis, but they are double the price.
google avatar

Moira N.

Yelp
This place is so good I still go out to grab a tofu banh mi any chance I can get, even though I moved away from Philly 6+ years ago. Once I had an amtrak connection at 30th St that got delayed and I literally ran from there to Fu Wah and back to grab a sandwich and make the most of the delay- completely worth the effort. They have nice snacks and drinks and my favorite thai curry paste (Maesri) so it is always worth stopping by. I miss living near this place and these sandwiches at least once a month.
google avatar

Benjamin M.

Yelp
My favorite banh mi in Philly. I always try to get there after 12 PM for the charbroiled pork. The guy at the front counter can act like he is happy once in a while.
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
the charbroiled pork bahn mi is to die for ! super quick service and delicious as hell. guys working here and nice
google avatar

Max H.

Yelp
Could have sworn I already reviewed this spot considering how often I go here for a quick snack and hoagie lunch and maybe a couple grocery items, especially some really unique selection of drinks, sauces, various asian products. Not quite as affordable as the larger markets in south philly or other areas, but definitely convenient and great to have in the neighborhood:)
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
The bah mi hoagies are hands down the best in the city. I always get tofu with everything. However they do put jalapeños on them. Sometimes it's too much and you'll need to pick them off. Hoagies are cheap. Nothing else in the store is.

Charles E.

Yelp
Best value Banh Mi in Philadelphia. Vegetarian-friendly tofu option is available, but waiting for the chargrilled pork to be ready for the day is 100% worth it.
google avatar

India N.

Yelp
Lmao they are def rude as fuck but the food is still good. Once again I suggest the grilled pork with everything.
google avatar

Marissa R.

Yelp
This little hole-in-the-wall quickie store is not just your average hole-in-the-wall quickie store! It's something very different than your average convenience shop, and I like it! It's got everything from organic chocolates to clorox, and everything in between. I actually went here to try the "tofu hoagie" which I'd been hearing about for years. This is a vegan version of the traditional Vietnamese pork hoagie... with pickled carrots and our choice of spiciness. For $4, there's really no way you can beat this!
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
this is totally a west philly gem. I love this place. I hadn't been there in quite some time -- but I recently moved a WHOLE lot closer. They've renovated since I've last been there! They have an actual grocery scanner now (no ghetto cash register). They carry everything.. for such a small quaint convenience store. Anything from silk tofu, to firm tofu, to lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves and curry paste. They're lacking on the brown rice I like.. but that's okay. They seriously have a great selection -- but their prices are a littttle bit pricer than other spots -- but I'm all for supporting independent businesses :) Oh, and yes the tofu hoagie is great. Do it
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
I enjoyed my tofu Vietnamese style hoagie! A west Philly hidden gem . Didn't explore too much of the mini mart, but I saw Cafe du Monde brand coffee which made me reminisce about New Orleans. Cash only.
google avatar

Reilly L.

Yelp
IT'S CASH ONLY so stop bitching when you find out. and it's a TINY spot!!! so be patient when there's a bunch of ppl tryna order. the less than $5 tofu bahn mi is perfect in every way... and it's even better if u get the cheese on it. they also sell a ton of specialty asian foods, as well as fresh produce and plenty vegan options. perfect spot.

Sam M.

Yelp
It wouldn't be West Philly without the Fu-Wah Vietnamese hoagie (banh mi). They haven't lost a step lo the 15 years I've been coming. Great grocery store to boot.
google avatar

Mo L.

Yelp
I've pretty much had every bahn mi on the menu and they're all BOMB, but the chargrilled pork is my all time favorite. FYI it isn't available before 11am, but if you're not eating full on Vietnamese hoagies for breakfast like me, it's not a big setback. Fun fact: Owner of the Eagles Jeffrey Lurie met his wife Tina here.
google avatar

Aelita P.

Yelp
Best bahn mi in the city, hands down (sorry QT). Their grilled pork bahn mi is incredible: a ton of really juicy well seasoned meat with fresh cilantro, carrots, radish, and jalapeno. I had heard great things about their tofu bahn mi as well, and while it isn't bad, I wouldn't get it again unless I decided to go vegetarian. It just wasn't THAT flavorful. Fu-Wah also has a lot of yummy drink and snack options (including a lot of Japanese snacks/ice cream!!!!!) AND they sell a lot of random grocery items that you might want for asian cooking (frozen kefir lime leaves, thai curry paste, etc.) Awesome spot!

Caitlyn Q.

Yelp
Nice little store for locals and tourists. Great service and some awesome Banh Mi sandwiches.

Willa R.

Yelp
Such good tofu banh mi! And convenient snacks and household goods. I go here more than anywhere else - really don't know what I would do without Fu Wah.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Best mini grocery store in the world and customer service is stellar When you walk in it feels like an updated mom and pop store and Dave is the best knows where every item in the the store is!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
All my life I have more or less had a bad relationship with tofu. Aside from what I've had at Govinda's (which I highly recommend any day), all the tofu that I have had (and attempted to cook) has always tasted like cooked wet rubber to me. So I was kind of skeptical when I went in to try Fu-Wah's tofu hoagie that has earned a cult like status quo! But I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Of course the fresh cilantro, chopped up carrots, and killer sauce helped it out a lot. But I'll spare you the graphic detail of how quickly I ended up devouring it. And the best part about it is that it cost less than $4, making it the best thing to get when your looking for a good meal on a budget. Overall I'm impressed with Fu-Wah. It's a good spot to get cleaning products in a hurry, scope out some rare condiments, and it's a veggie lovers paradise. The people who work there are super friendly too. the lady behind the register was a class act.
google avatar

Will L.

Yelp
We were in the area wanting a snack and saw banh mi featured on the window as we passed by. Other than those signs in the window, it's really just a small convenience store. After walking in, we weren't even sure where to look for banh mi (above the cashier). I ordered classic pork with pate, and my wife ordered roasted pork. Prices were quite reasonable, and the banh mi were ready pretty quickly. Both of our sandwiches tasted great and had quite a bit of kick from the jalapenos! The mix of pickled vegetables and meat were great in both, and the bread was on the crusty side. Overall a good experience, and I'd go back for another! They didn't have the chargrilled pork sandwich this time, so I'll try that next time. They only take cash, but there's an ATM in the store if you need it.
google avatar

Shereen C.

Yelp
Update: In addition to the tofu hoagie, the chargrilled pork hoagie is also tasty. The meat is flavourful and they put a fatty mayonnaise-like spread on the bun. This one definitely seems less healthy than the tofu hoagie. Beware: Half the time we order the CHARGRILLED pork hoagie, we actually get the ROAST pork hoagie, which is rather dry and flavourless. When I'm not up for the risk (and I'm often not), I just order the tofu hoagie to be safe.
google avatar

Isabel R.

Yelp
Everyone said to get the tofu bahn mi, so I got the tofu bahn mi. Zero regrets, and I would get another one in a heartbeat. The tofu is season and cooked well, with a nice crunchy texture on the outside. And so affordable! Cash only. Come here on a nice sunny day and enjoy your bahn mi in Clarke park, only a short walk away.
google avatar

Kurt I.

Yelp
I will fight you if you don't like this tofu bahn-mi. *legal disclaimer - no I won't fight you, you're allowed to like whatever you want, but perhaps you should try someone else's tofu hoagie and compare. It really is quite inexpensive, fresh, and tasty. **Also note the market is a fantastic market, for fantastic market type things as well as many vegan options. *** I really had nothing to say here, I just like the asterisk. ****If they taught martial arts here, would it be the Kung Fu-Wah? ***** If they did indeed teach martial arts here, they would fight you if you didn't like their tofu bahn-mi.
google avatar

Kailey R.

Yelp
super convenient market right off of Baltimore Ave! the Banh Mi's are delicious with vegan options & sooo many snacks. there's also a grocery section with plenty of Asian staples & vegan items. Everyone who works there is very friendly
google avatar

Jeffrey N.

Yelp
The char grilled pork banh mi was absolutely DELICIOUS. Though I would've liked a slightly larger portion (the banh mi was very affordable however), the meat was packed with all the right flavors and left me wanting more. I am excited to come here again sometime soon.
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Tofu Bahn Mi is delicious! Freshly made to order, it always makes my belly so happy. I love that the store carries some staple Asian grocery items too.
google avatar

Lily P.

Yelp
Great chicken bahn mi! I go at least once a week for a little lunch treat. If you like green tea flavored stuff, you've gotta try the matcha ice cream sandwich!
google avatar

Herbie H.

Yelp
Such a West Philly gem. Not only do they have insanely delicious & legendary banh mi (my favorites are the roasted pork and the tofu variety), but they also have a treasure trove of grocery items (including a wide scope of Asian & Spanish goods.) The people behind the counter are super friendly and nice. Important to note that they are CASH ONLY, which is a bit of a bummer. It's the best kind of neighborhood deli - a mix of everything with some delicious sandwiches.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
We got the seared pork bbq bahn mi. Wow, this was great. The roll was very high quality. The meat was tender and extremely flavorful. The flavor is very similar to Korean Bulgogi. The price is quite good and the service was great. We went on a top-Yelp food tour the day we went here. This was the best of the best. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
Never had a better banh-mi or "shredded chicken hoagie." Always fresh. Always amazing. Love that I can also grab a Ritter Sport bar and a drink while I wait. I would gladly eat a fu-wah hoagie a couple times a week if I could.

Matt D.

Yelp
Delicious hoagies. Definitely go for the bahn mi! The tofu option is good. The chargrilled pork is delicious. The convenience store also has a great selection and also sells fresh fruit and vegetables.
