Best Dishes Eater LA Editors Ate This Week: February 18 - Eater LA

"Operated by Argentine-born spouses Federico Labourneau and Maximillian Pizzi, this shop offers some of the city's best empanadas with a variety of fillings. The dough is perfectly seasoned, and the shop also serves Argentine-style sandwiches." - Eater Staff

Fantastic food and service! The potato tortilla with caramelized onion and the empanadas (especially the beef—to die for!) were incredible. The vibe is vibrant and the staff is welcoming. The only downside is the location. Walking from the shop to the History Museum, the neighborhood didn't feel very safe. I would love to see this fantastic Argentinan restaurant in a more central area, like downtown Santa Monica.

Okay …. Love this ethnic lil’ nugget! Food is delish! We had the empanadas and they were on point. How can I say this? Well I’m Argentine and this lil’ place made me feel at home. Flavors , sounds and atmosphere…took me back to my youth. The food is delish and the staff is super attentive and kind. This is a small business that has the potential for greatness. We will be back to feel back at home once again and again. Thank you Fuego 🔥

Google
We hired Fuegos LA for a last-minute catering need at our event, and they went above and beyond. They worked within our budget, offered a great variety of options, and communicated with us seamlessly throughout. The food was absolutely incredible—our guests were thrilled and enjoyed every bite! We highly recommend them and will 100% be hiring them again for future events.

Google
Wonderful food... The pink salad was amazing - you need to get it (the rice was unexpected and such a treat in it). Good variety of empanadas at a very reasonable price. They even sell frozen empanadas by the dozen. The staff were all friendly and professional. We will definitely be going back, especially for breakfast/brunch.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Went to Fuegos in LA with my friends to celebrate a birthday and we had the best time! We sang, danced, laughed — the staff was super friendly and made us feel so welcome. The milanesa sandwich was amazing!! And the atmosphere… honestly the best part. So fun and full of good vibes. Can’t wait to go back! 🔥💃🎶

Google
Absolutely phenomenal experience at Fuegos LA! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm hospitality and an inviting ambiance that perfectly blends modern LA vibes with Latin soul. The food? Next-level. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented — you can tell there’s real passion in the kitchen. The grilled meats were juicy and full of smoky depth, and the chimichurri? Addictive. Their wine selection is thoughtful and well-curated, pairing beautifully with the menu. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and everyone made us feel like part of the Fuegos family. Whether you’re a foodie or just looking for a great night out, Fuegos LA is a must. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
Could not recommend Fuegos enough! Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was incredible. Highly recommend the steak empanadas and the Tablita de Asado!

Google
I found out about Fuegos through a local block party and tasted the beef empanadas, which was a nice balance of flavorful seasoned beef in a soft pillowy and yet flaky dough. More recently I also participated in one of Fuego’s community events - Salsa Yoga, cacao ceremony and setting intentions to start off a beautiful Sunday morning. What a an amazing event. We stayed afterwards to try the coffee, empanadas, and brunch bites! For someone that loves empanadas and a potato tortilla (eggs, potatoes, and sweet caramelized onions, and seasoned with black pepper), it was a wonderful experience for a Sunday brunch. Cannot wait to enjoy more of this Argentinan treat right here in South central LA.

Yelp
Fuego in LA is such a hidden gem! From the moment you walk in, you feel the warm, inviting energy cool Argentinian vibes, friendly service intimate corner spot, delicious food and good wine selection. We sat at the bar and was welcomed by one of the owners, whose friendly service and recommendations made the evening even better. The dishes were full of authentic flavor, and the Malbec we shared was excellent and fairly priced. It's the kind of spot where you can relax, enjoy good food, and feel genuinely taken care of. Bonus -- Thursday nights are Tango lesson and dance. Fuego is more than just a meal; it's an intimate experience with great stories shared about the history of Argentina food. Highly recommend for anyone who loves great food, wine, and a little passion in the air.

Yelp
We came for jazz night it was super fun. Parking lot is decked out with ample amount of spacing. Dinner and some live music entertainment. Service was great, not too busy. If you like wine and outside seating this is the spot! Love the car that had the grill in the back. We had the empanadas which were delicious. Milanesa and alot of wine. good selection to chill. This food is pretty rare in la and the owners are super kind. Fun to chat with and hear their story. can't wait to go back with the gang!

Yelp
Unfortunately, I'm sad to say that my experience was far different than the others here. I placed a pick up order over the phone, the person I spoke to was fantastic and I was super excited to try a spot close to home. I actually didn't know about this place until my Amex platinum offered a special on restaurants who are part of the Resy network. I don't normally explore this side of town so I was enthusiastic about this place. I went on Yelp and the pictures looked amazing & the reviews were phenomenal. However, my experience ended up being opposite. First, I should mention that the area is still a bit sketchy. S LA is gentrifying but this area still has some time before any major changes. Their shared parking lot is super small so it's likely you'll have to grab street parking which should be easy in the neighborhood but I'm not sure I'd be too comfortable going late in the evening. For my pick up, I went to the side door which was open. I'm not sure what happened but my experience with service wasn't positive. They brought out the food and basically disappeared. I paid for the order on my own, checked to make sure the order was correct meanwhile everyone was running around, nobody checked on me, thanked me or said good bye. It was a really strange experience and quite off putting.. I've tried several different empanadas at various restaurants in the area and these were my least favorite. I've also traveled to Argentina and experienced the best empanadas in my life and these didn't compare. For the price point of $5, they were small and the flavors were just ok. I was also annoyed they provided one tiny container of chimichurri which was also just ok. I also got the ham/cheese medialuna which was like a mini croissant sandwich and it too was just ok. For those with a sweet tooth chocolate croissant with Dulce de leche, for $8, it missed the mark. I think my order was just thrown together and it looked messy which wasn't a good start. But based on other reviews, they seem to offer some nice events in the evening, service is good inside the restaurant and unsure if my experience was a one off bad day. But at the end of the day, it was my experience, I wasn't happy and unsure if I'll go back.

Yelp
Former coworker selected this place as a place to meet for lunch and it was a very surprisingly delicious choice. Headed to the shopfront that had the restaurant name, but it was in another shop. The service was super friendly and food was very tasty. It was an eclectic design pathetic, but not in a bad way.

Yelp
I've never been to Argentina, but now I really want to go -- everything about this place is pure magic. The food is incredible: order as many empanadas as you can possibly fit in your mouth (trust me). The steak was cooked to perfection and paired beautifully with my favorite side combo -- fries and arugula salad. The red wine selection is chef's kiss and complements every bite. I think I might've tried them all... thankfully, I took an Uber. The service was perfect - I kept them busy filling my wine glass. The ambiance is thoughtfully curated with fun design touches that create a warm, European-style coziness. There was a big birthday party outside having a blast while my friend and I sat at the bar -- such great energy all around. They also serve breakfast and coffee, so I'll definitely be back to check that out. Perfect spot for an intimate dinner, a fun night with friends, or a festive celebration. Absolutely loved it!

Entrana - skirt steak with chimichurri

Yelp
A true Hidden Gem! I absolutely LOVE this place ! This is the closest to home that I've felt since I left Argentina. They genuinely make the best empanadas in LA (Please try spinach and mushroom) and the vibe it self will make you keep coming back, I've been in several of their live music sessions and tango dancing nights ! The service is super warm and friendly, and the owners them selves will take their time to make you feel at home.

Yelp
I've walked by this place a few times and finally tried it tonight. We only got empanadas and drinks, but the menu has a lot more to it! The feeling inside was upscale and the service was friendly. We tried 5 different flavors of empanadas. My husband who is from Argentina and knows a good empanada said the beef empanadas smelled authentic and you just can't get chopped beef empanadas anywhere else in LA. Lots of other places sell you empanadas with mostly air inside or ground beef. Not here. Here there is lots of moist filling. Fuegos is great addition to the neighborhood! Convenient to the Expo/western metro stop. Fuegos is more proof that South LA is the new place you want to be.

Yelp
Watching the morning news and Fuegos la was being featured. I am born and raised in the Los Angeles and I am always amazed when I come across an unexpected gem. The food is fantastic, the staff is excellent, love the whole vibe of the restaurant and my Argentine wife felt right at home.

Yelp
This was a great little cozy spot with really great tasting food we came across while visiting LA from DC. The service was just as good, thanks to Max we had a great experience! This is a MUST TRY!

Yelp
Allow me to share my enthusiasm for this Argentinian restaurant, which is quickly becoming my favorite dining spot in LA. On my second visit, we indulged in buñuelos de acelga, empanadas, entrana, filet mignon sandwich, Dulce de leche ice cream, and their coffee (artesanal coffee, which is definitely a must ), and everything was truly delightful !!!!
google avatar

Jes A.

Yelp
Empanadas seems so easy, and yet you've most likely never had a good one. The dough was probably soggy and flavorless or the inside just bland. They're probably all shaped like mini tacos with no personality and maybe branded by whoever made them. Or maybe you've made your way to Fuegos and just been baptized in the way of the empanada. Now it all makes sense. Flaky delicious dough, insides bursting with flavor, with a chimichurri sauce to bring it all home. On top of that, there's a speak easy to take it all in at and the owner is just a wonderful man. Excited to welcome this place to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Fuegos, one of the newest restaurants in our area, has been endlessly talked up by all my neighbors. Lots of hype to live up to. I finally got a chance to try their food for myself -- and I BELIEVE THE HYPE. Max and Fede have managed to make the tastiest, savory empanadas I've ever had. And their wine selection and expertise have introduced me to so many delicious and unique varietals. We ate dinner just in time for their "jazz night," which only elevated the ambiance. I'm so glad that Fuegos is part of our community and I look forward to many years of good food, good company, and good stories. A+

Yelp
We recently catered an event at our firm with FUEGOS LA, and it was nothing short of phenomenal. The food was absolutely delicious -- a gourmet spread that included both meat and vegan empanadas, breakfast sandwiches, and a delightful assortment of desserts. Everything was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The food arrived right on time, giving us plenty of breathing room to set up for our 65-person breakfast event. It made the morning completely stress-free. Everyone raved about the food -- and people are still talking about it! I also want to give a huge shoutout to the owners, Frederico and Max -- they are just absolutely lovely and a true pleasure to work with. Responsive, professional, and so thoughtful with the whole process. I'll definitely be ordering from FUEGOS again -- they've officially become our go-to for catering. Highly, highly recommend! Yelp
They have the best Argentinian empanadas ! And a large variety of good wines especially Malbec ! Food is excellent and the owners are always welcoming! This place is a hidden gem, I for sure recommend and become a regular !

Yelp
I don't use the term Hidden Gem often, but this is absolutely what Fuego's is! They've got wonderful, creative and attractive empanadas that are handcrafted and made with love! My favorite is the hand cut sirloin and the vegan beef! They've got a bunch of great Argentinian sandwiches as well and you can dine in where they've got a great coffee and beer / Wine Bar that has a lovely rustic South American Decor to it. Big thanks for wonderful service and true South American hospitality! They also have a lot of cool wine tasting events as well as Tango classes. Just check the calendar!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious! I keep coming back for more and want to try all the empanadas!! The chimichurri sauce really ties it all together. They have a variety of drink offerings. But the empanadas are the star of the show! My favorite is the classic beef! The service is kind and thoughtful. They make sure you have what you need and then some! The ambiance is also stellar. The eating area is beautifully decorated and the music is amazing. I am so excited to come here again and again!
google avatar

Yelp
If you love Argentinian food - you HAVE to go to Fuegos LA! The empanadas are incredible! We had 8 family & friends last Sunday and everyone totally loved the food, wine, drinks & desserts! We bought a dozen empanadas to take home and are enjoying them as well!! Love Fuegos LA! FedI & Max are amazing owners!

Yelp
Amazing establishment! Super authentic and great workers! You cannot go wrong with any empanadas here all high end fresh and delicious! The wine was great Argentinian selection and the entraña was excellent! Will go back for more

Yelp
If you're in the mood for the best Argentinian empanadas in Los Angeles, Fuegos is the place to be. My top two contenders for my favorite empanadas at Fuegos are the hand cut beef empanada as well as the chicken empanada. Additionally, if you are in the mood for coffee, they have some great choices available. Fuegos is welcoming, and you are able to enjoy your food and drinks in a cozy environment. If you want magic, come to Fuegos.

Yelp
Impeccable vibes. The food is totally delicious, unlike anything else in the area. The owners are SO nice and welcoming, the decor is so chic and cute, the wine selection is great... so much to love about this place. Perfect for all kinds of moments - could be a cute date night, but also we've brought our baby to hang out and munch on empanadas for an early dinner.

Gabed D.

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant! The empanadas are amazing. My favorite is the Marguerita. Great vegetarian options too. Staff is very friendly.
google avatar

Bryce W.

Yelp
Best empanadas in LA! This new spot is a hidden gem. I had the hand cut beef, ham & cheese, caprese, and corn empanadas. All delicious, the crusts were perfectly flaky, thin, and not heavy. A cornucopia of flavors. My favorite was the corn - vegan with a unique flavor. The restaurant itself is really cool. There's a small walk-up counter that's easy to spot, and next door is the dining room tucked away in an old tattoo parlor. Has kind of a speakeasy feel. The owner Federico is super friendly and has an interesting background in the entertainment industry. He is very knowledgeable about Argentinian food and makes excellent wine pairing recommendations. I will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
Delicious and in a very cute setting. Very excited to have a little spot for happy hour in South LA! Great staff, very friendly. My only request would be they expand the menu a little or at the very least add a salad.
google avatar

Shannon F.

Yelp
Delicious empanadas with amazing chimichurri, served in a really cool wine bar space! They also sell take and bake empanadas which come in a really cute packaging and are perfect for parties and such. This is the exact kind of business we want and need in this south LA neighborhood, pay them a visit!!

Yelp
Wow, where to begin with Fuegos? We can't imagine living in South LA without Fuegos - the ultimate destination for community, and the most amazing food, drinks, and fun. Every time we go it's a vibe, dance party, and celebration all in one. The service is top notch, with Maximilian and Federico really pulling out all the stops, making us feel like it's our second home. The ham & cheese medialunas are to die for as breakfast and we love every empanada. You can even get some frozen to go - perfect for a late night snack or emergency dinner. Can't sing enough praises about Fuegos, you have to check it out yourself! A true taste of Argentina in the heart of LA.

Sherri L.

Yelp
Back at our happy place, and Fuegos never fails to surprise us with their fresh changes that brighten every visit. The outdoor dining area is bright and welcoming, and there's even a huge heart on the building that lights up, showcasing the love the owners pour into this place. It's not just about the food; it's about how you're treated and the warmth of the community that gathers here. You meet new friends, and honestly, it feels like a family that's always ready to embrace you. While many refer to the venue simply as Fuegos, I prefer to think of it as Max and Fede's place because it transcends the typical restaurant vibe; it's so much more than that. When I arrived, the atmosphere was already lively, with Fede putting coals to work for grilling Argentine beef, which is renowned for its exceptional quality. According to argentinebeefusa.com, it's considered some of the best in the world--free of antibiotics, with most of the production occurring on natural pastures and grasslands. This dedication to quality shines through in their menu items, from the Hand Cut Beef Empanadas to the Argentinian Style Burger and Lomito Sandwich made with Filet Mignon, all of which taste unbelievably ! I was especially excited to try the brunch items, particularly the medialunas, which I hadn't had in years. Back when I lived in Buenos Aires, I enjoyed them nearly daily with café con leche to kick-start my mornings. I'm so grateful to Max and Fede for bringing these sweet treats to Los Angeles. I was pleasantly surprised to find medialunas filled with dulce de leche, which surpassed my memories--these are truly so wonderful with their outstanding recipe. They also offer a ham and cheese version. Whether you choose them plain or filled, they are remarkable, but the breakfast empanada with chimichurri is an absolute must. I took a bite and had a "WTF" moment; it was beyond delicious! Next was the burger, which the hubby thoroughly enjoyed. The Argentine spices brought a depth of flavor to this incredibly rich, cheesy, and juicy creation. For me, the Lomito Sandwich was the winner. The BBQ grill touch on the filet mignon, combined with arugula, roasted peppers, and a perfectly crisp fried egg, created a bussin'-bussin' combination of flavors. All of this was in a ciabatta roll, and of course, it was served with fries and sauce. We couldn't resist having some wine, and Max was happy to share his favorite: a 2022 Los Bocheros Malbec. It's so smooth, with notes of plum, cherry jam, mocha, and cola, complemented by flavors of blackberry, chocolate, and coffee. We ordered another round! What I never expected was a scoop of dulce de leche ice cream, but Fede surprised us, and once again, I was blown away. This ice cream had incredible depth and intense flavor that felt remarkably fresh. I learned it's his mother's recipe, and I could taste the love. We love chatting and laughing with these guys and sharing stories. They mentioned that Phil Rosenthal visited and declared their empanadas the best he's ever had. While you might not take our word for it, you can definitely trust Phil! I can't recommend this place enough. I love seeing these guys, how they make us feel at home, how they serve the most amazing food, and how there are always unexpected surprises. Bookmark this spot and head over for breakfast, coffee, weekend brunch, happy hour, dinner ... or follow them to reserve your place at their next BBQ!

L L.

Yelp
When manager Maximilian answered my phone inquiry, he sold me. So friendly and forthcoming! We live over 10 miles away from Fuegos LA, but his honest answers to our MANY questions convinced us to experiment with dinner in a different neighborhood. We each got the complete meal for $55. The "vegan beef" meal was a hit with the meat-eater! The Argentina coffee is excellent. The desserts were divine. Chocolates-coated raspberry and an ice cream finished our meals beautifully. Cudos to Chef Federico!

Yelp
Awesome little restaurant tucked away near USC, phenomenal empanadas with an amazing dine-in section right next door to where you order. Rustic, clean, and charming, you'll love the fresh smell of sage and palo santo as you scarf down ham & cheese empanadas by the half dozen! The loaded fries drenched in chimichurri and polenta cheese is also a warm, satisfying stand out! The music selection is also great, caught myself "ooncin" to the beat more than once! Came here with a few other hungry friends and the food came quickly and efficiently for all us, the owners are stand up guys. Looking forward to visiting them again!

Yelp
My favorite Argentinian restaurant in town!!! The empanadas are unbelievable and the staff is very warm and friendly. Can't wait to come back for one of their tango nights

Yelp
The food was very good, ate in the parking lot-- which had great live music and a car-b-que.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and attentive staff. Most dishes were tasty, with fresh ingredients. A couple small things missed the mark, but nothing major. Definitely a place worth visiting more than once.

Yelp
came here for family dinner, and we're a mix of vegans and non-vegans. we got a beef and vegan milanesa sandwich, the regular and vegan burgers, the lomito sandwich, and like 4 or 5 empanadas. and everything was delicious! Max was awesome and really took care of us. top notch customer service!! the banana ice cream is sooo good -- you have to try!

Yelp
This empanadas are the best empanadas I've ever had. So flakey and fresh! Great atmosphere, like an old Argentinian bar. The empanadas were so good, I bought a dozen frozen to take home!

Yelp
I have been dining at FUEGOS LA for the past week. While I have been unhoused from the lockdown getting off the Amtrak train last month. This cafe has been feeding my body and soul with their Argentinian breakfast and dinner vegan-vegetarian friendly meals, fresh produce, imported cheese from Argentina and delicious local baked artisan bread. It's been keeping my blood pressure down and my appetite up for more, empanadas, pozeleta, arugula and pink salad, golden milk with oat milk and dragon fruit latte with coconut milk iced! ay mi dios! Incredible! Delicious
google avatar

Yelp
I would give this place 6 stars if I could! For the following reasons: - The service was delightfully friendly - The Empanadas themselves were immaculate and full of flavor. Don't skip on the chimichurri, it's a must - The wine pairings were perfect and very light and refreshing - The music played was fun to rock back and forth too and never became dull - The crowd was young and hip - And last but not least I would've killed a man for the dulce de leche ice-cream Overall fantastic hole in the wall, can't wait to come back

Yelp
This Argentinian restaurant has a great atmosphere, it makes you feel inviting, making it perfect for a relaxed meal with friends.

Yelp
Loved this place, would definitely eat here again. They hosted a tango night and we went to check it out. We ordered all of the vegetarian and vegan empanadas, 5 total and they were all sooo good and I'm picky as I'm Argentinian. The dough was flakey and light which is basically impossible to find anywhere other than home made and you can tell the ingredients inside are high quality.

Maria Angela B.

Yelp
This is one of the most authentic spots in LA. The food is a solid 10/10--my favorites were the Lomito Sandwich and the mushroom & spinach empanada. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the welcoming energy. The service is outstanding--they truly make you feel at home. I will totally be back.

Jose B.

Yelp
The moment you walk in, you're treated like family. The owners are amazing--genuine, warm, and welcoming. The atmosphere is so cozy and inviting, you'll find yourself wanting to stay longer. Great food, even better vibes. A true hidden gem! Thanks guys.

Yelp
The empanadas are delicious. Love that they have vegan and vegetarian options. Next door they have a speakeasy Wine Bar, the list features Latin American wines. This is exactly what the neighborhood needed.

Yelp
I'm so happy to have found Fuegos LA. The empanadas are the best that I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I tried one of every flavor and each one was as good the previous. Dine on the spot or take the frozen ones home for later. They give perfect home cooking instructions for your next event. To go sauces are also available and delicious.

Yelp

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this place. I recently attended a curated dinner at their wine bar and it was such an amazing culinary experience. Food was delicious, ragú ñoquis and carne empanadas were my favorites. The Argentinian wines were delightful. Loved the music and ambience. The hosts are super sweet and service was outstanding! Definitely coming back!
