14 Stellar Spots to Sip Wine in Vancouver and Clark County, Washington | Eater Portland

"This cozy bistro and wine bar, tucked in a strip mall near I-5 in Ridgefield, offers an extensive wine list featuring Washington wine, as well as pours from elsewhere, served by the glass or bottle. The bistro fills its menu with hearty classics, each with a few of Fuel’s own unique touches: The Tillamook grilled cheese can be upgraded to Fuel style with bacon and fig jam; diced hazelnuts, sweet dried cranberries, and bits of goat cheese dot the mixed greens that are drizzled in Fuel’s own lemonade vinaigrette for the house salad." - Rachel Pinsky

The Don sandwich was phenomenal. I ordered it exactly how it comes and it was delicious. I upgraded my side to the elk chili, which was also incredible. The addition of cheese curds was a nice touch. Service was great. The space could be a touch more refined given the price point of the sandwiches, and having nutrition info on hand would be a plus. Wonderful all in all, I would go back.

Ridgefield is blessed to have Fuel Bistro. They serve a variety of dishes, but the star attraction are their sandwiches. They're both savory and delicious. The hard part is choosing which one. After consulting with our waiter, I chose The Gunmen Melt. It has shaved prime rib, Gruyère and cheddar cheese, bacon, horseradish aioli, and spicy bacon jam on grilled garlic Texas toast. Hungry yet? It was fantastic. I would visit more often if Fuel were closer. Check out my profile for more great eateries and craft cocktail bars.✌🏼-VanPort Insider

Google
A big thank you!!! From a celiac not just GF person. Have eaten there before-food and service has been great. Learned I have celiac so went for lunch. Inquired about the chili(the server said there was no flour used but wanted to check if the beef broth contained wheat-while I was waiting got a text and had to head home to open the house for a service person so didn’t eat there today). Turns out it did sadly but that extra precaution would’ve saved me days of headaches and feeling unwell. I will be back feeling confident I can order safely.

Google
This was my first time coming to this place. I had heard about it from others. We had the Gunman Melt & the Monte Cristo, which was delicious with the soup of the day chicken pot pie that didn't disappoint. I gave it a 5 star across the board because all in all, this was a great experience with really good food. The only thing I could say that was a negative was the wait for the food was a bit long, which also meant the food wasn't as hot as I would've liked it. Regardless, I will definitely be coming back

Google
Very tasty sandwiches here. Loved the special Ruben with the outstanding tomato bisque. Also the Gunman melt sandwich is recommended. Elk chill is chill cookoff winner quality IMO. Great wine selections and some craft beers as well. Last but by no means least was the service. Very friendly and welcoming people here. Felt right at home. We will definitely be back. Highly recommended place for a outstanding sandwich, soup or salad.

Google
Quiet peaceful bistro location with amazing high quality Deli and Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches, Soups, Salads, and Elk Chili hidden in a corner plaza on the east side of the freeway off exit 14 of the I-5 in Ridgefield WA. The atmosphere is cozy and quiet and the food is top notch. To me this place is like a hybrid fusion of a Subway and Red Robbin combined together. Highly recommend trying it out if your in the area!

Google
Great Bistro with with a better than average selection of quality wines. I've been there a few times for lunch and find myself coming back. The food is always wonderful. There is a gift shop adjoining the restaurant that features kitchen and home decor items. One tip I can give you if you're going for lunch make sure to get there a little bit before noon to ensure a table.

Google
My wife loves this place. This has been her recent obsession. Food tastes great and is always fresh. Service has always been awesome anytime we dined in. I am so happy to have such a niche sandwich “bistro” in Ridgefield. With that being said this place is SIGNIFICANTLY over priced for what you get. I decided to do take out today for a late lunch and the Philly sandwich I purchased (same as pictured) was $18. In my opinion this is pretty darn steep for what it’s worth.

Yelp
Oh my god, this is the best sandwich I have ever had. I am eating the Lewis and Clark sandwich right now and it's so, so good. Yeah, they're expensive, but they're incredible.

Yelp
Very friendly little bistro with AMAZING food! The elk chili is outrageously good - a very hearty chili with an amazing taste profile. Probably the best I've ever tasted. Monte Christi sandwich was huge and perfectly prepared with a house made tasting raspberry jam that was perfect. I upgraded the side dish from the chips that are offered to a bowl of tomato bisque and I'm so glad I did - it was one of the finest I've ever tried, anywhere. Don't let this smallish place in a little strip mall fool you - it's haute cuisine. Very personable service. Spectacular experience!

Anna C.

Yelp
The chicken salad sandwich is THE best! I get the side of elk chili and it makes a perfect hearty but not too heavy lunch

Yelp
I love this place. They are lovely people. The setting is cozy but they are professional. Food takes a short time, even when busy. ANNNNND if I want a glass of wine or a treat, they have that too! They even have a super cute eclectic everything shop attached that brings back some childhood memories and always has something fun and surprising to find. Oh, the food is great too and they have my childhood favorite Monte Christo sandwich which is hard to find.

Yelp
Shared lunch with my mom today! Was great service and tasty food! We split the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. I got my half with a house salad which I thought was delicious & she got her half w/ the soup of the day Split Pea & Ham (not pictured) was also very good!

Yelp
Delicious food and wonderful staff. We each had the tomato bisque and shared the burrata plate. Yummy!! I wish they served cocktails so my girlfriends and I could have happy hour there, but they only serve cider, beer, and wine. Bummer!

Yelp
New find for us tonight. We will definitely finding our way back to Fuel in the near future. Very tiny inside and a few outside seats in front. Those will be great come summer. Crystal provided us with great service as well!

Yelp
Love this place. We got there last night at 6:30 or so they close at 7. I often feel bad about coming in so close to their closing time but we were greeted as though we got there much earlier. We felt welcomed, appreciated for being there and we were very well taken care of. Everything was perfect. The waitress I'm not sure of her name but she is just a bubbly beam of sunshine. The food and wine and beer was awesome! Thanks to all who make that place such a gem to come to. Thanks again. We'll be back soon.

Yelp
I love this place. I fell in love with it before I moved to the area. It's next door to a cute eclectic shop that you could get lost for hours in. I have a couple favorites here and so do my family. I've taken friends visiting from out of town to both the bistro and rare earth. It quickly wins them over every time. My sister is obsessed with their creamy mushroom soup. I started calling randomly to see if they had it. Then just leveled with the guy. "Hi. We are obsessed with the creamy mushroom soup. When is it next available?" Lol we came back the day he said it would be made and when we asked for a bowl he let me know it could be qrt size. Score!! Sis was happy with soup leftovers for a couple days. I love the hitman sammich but I usually ask for it low carb (over lettuce). I love the basil aïoli that comes with it. The tomato soup is a staple that's almost always available. It comes with a pesto drizzle over the top. Those are the three most often ordered items we get, but have tried a few other things. Pix included.

Yelp
Just had an outstanding lunch here with my wife. We split the prime rib sandwich with sides of Caesar salad and tomato bisque. This place is definitely a cut above. And we just happened to come in on Monday which was 1/2 price on bottles of wine. Service was intimate and our waitress got all of our details right. They also offered beers on tap and ciders. Definitely would recommend this to anyone looking for a gourmet meal. Ambience was dark with nice red walls and a faux fireplace. Check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
A few us went here and got some sandwiches, salads, and soups. The wait staff seemed outlandish, not very friendly. The food was okay. But what blown us away was the price and the portion size for everything was small too. We left the restaurant feeling still hungry and gipped. We ended up at another restaurant to get fed. We will not be going back to this place.

Yelp
So disappointed in this very small what is basically an over priced sandwich shop. Ordered food for pickup about 25 minutes before they closed. My order was simple a house salad with chicken and a bowl of soup. My order was ready when I got there with the exception of putting the soup in a container, which was no big deal but it wasn't filled all the way and it was a small container for $8.50! I pickup everything paid and gave a tip and when I got home I found that there was no salad dressing. So I called and they were of course closed and not answering the phone. I called the next day when they opened and explained everything and was told a salad would be waiting with dressing for pickup. My daughter got there when I said I would be in and staff had zero idea what she was talking about. $30 for a very small portion of salad and chicken and what was basically a can sized cup of soup was way too much to pay. The portion sizes are pathetic and the quality is not impressive. I'm thankful that Ridgefield now has good options for food that's reasonably priced so I would not bother with this place. You can get a huge salad at an upscale restaurant in downtown Vancouver for $18 dollars.

Yelp
Great food and the best service! Their turkey bacon with avocado is my go-to. So plentiful I always end up talking 1/2 home with me
google avatar

Gracie S.

Yelp
Had high hopes for this place, especially after seeing the price. At just over $19.00 with the tax, figured the sandwich must be huge. Wrong... the sandwich was so tiny that I laughed when I saw it. What a joke! The taste was good but not worth the price!!! What a RIP OFF.
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy little spot! Perfect for a warm lunch on a chilly day. They have a bunch of small tables but also a larger table for a bigger group. Our server was very nice. They did originally forget to place one of the salads but quickly got it made once we asked.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
This was a spontaneous decision and we were very pleasantly surprised! Right off the freeway - easy access. Cute little place. We sat by the little decor-only fireplace. Food was creative and very tasty. Our server, Crystal, was both friendly and professional. Glad to find it. Will go there again!

Sara E.

Yelp
My sandwich was amazing but very small for the price! If I am paying $17.75 for a sandwich I would expect to at least be full afterward. If it were about half the price I would order this every day. (Apparently also charge 50 cents extra for to go orders)
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
My wife and I went on Valentine's Day and had the Lobster with pasta and desserts. The food and service were excellent. If you want low key served with excellence I would recommend this place. Very quaint!
google avatar

Karly B.

Yelp
I have had food ordered out from Fuel but this was my first dining-in experience. My only complaint regarding the food (or this place, in general) is that the Tuscan pasta entrée that I ordered was a special and will likely not be on the regular menu. What a shame because it was *spectacular*! Arriving after the typical lunch hour made getting a table super easy and service was prompt and seasoned. This is a cute little place with a few outdoor tables. I'd be happy to bring anyone here for lunch!!

Joy G.

Yelp
Food was good but nothing fabulous, service was friendly, nice place clean and interesting artwork, but spendy for what you get

Yelp
The staff were SO rude!!! We will never come back and do NOT recommend to anyone. I very politely asked if I got chicken with my salad because it was so bad and chewy. The server Marissa (who asked that I use her name) said yes, and I let her know I did not want my salad because I couldn't chew the chicken. She offered to bring more chicken out and I explained that I was fine with just my side of soup. We got the bill and she charged us for the salad, which I asked to be taken off since I did not eat any of it. The manager had to approve it and he then came back to my table and asked me if I worked around the bad parts and tried the good pieces of chicken!!!!! I said absolutely not and that I did not want to be charged for something I have to "work around." He took it off and then Marissa got really fiesty after that-raising her voice, hand gestures. Terrible. We will never be back! There was another very nice server who was on her lunch and stepped in and admitted that Marissa was being ridiculous and she couldn't believe what she was seeing either. I feel bad for the nice staff who work in this hostile environment. *I should add that I did indeed try a few bites of the "good" pieces of chicken before I said anything to our waitress, but it was so rough and chewy! It tasted like chicken that was cooked the day before and then microwaved.

Yelp
Stopped in with a good friend - on the way to a concert. I haven't been in Ridgefield too many times - and found this spot via Yelp. The waitress ( I believe her name was Jessica ) was doing a STELLAR job from start to finish - with the load of people that were present. She was by herself, super busy, and still had a smile on her face! I enjoyed the local white wine I had - per recommendation. We ordered the pretzel sticks and cheese, the baked Brie and bread, and the Mamas Club Sandwich. The Baked Brie came in a mini skillet with hints of nut, and cinnamon - it was fantastic. The Mamas Club Sandwich was delicious as well. A smidge small in case you are feeling hungry! In a nice complex off the freeway!

Jesus R.

Yelp
Nice bistro with a good variety of drinks and fantastic food. Perfect for small appetites or those not looking for a heavy meal. Food was very nice. Good space and ambiance. Server was welcoming and attentive.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I've ever had was the Gunman Melt. This place was so good. Clam chowder and elk chili were fantastic. They were really busy and the service was slow, but very friendly and they were working super hard. Food and friendly staff made this a great experience. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
Fuel has become one of my favorite places to eat in town. The sandwiches are delicious and the elk chili is amazing!

Lois M.

Yelp
The food is great. Have been there several times. They skimp on staff and sometimes have 1 waitress for the whole,e room so service is very slow. I really like supporting local businesses but not going back. I like a leisurely meal but have felt like helping the poor waitress.
google avatar

Bruce V.

Yelp
Delicious! Try looking for Facebook in advance for really good food. It's near the I-5 freeway.
google avatar

Ariel M.

Yelp
Food service is great, they need some help with exhaust. They smoke out the little cafe. Besides that great place..
google avatar

Rebecca N.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches and I really enjoyed the chili. Please add fries to your menu though!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch after a birding expedition on the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge. It will be our new go-to for future bird watching trips! Best sandwich I've eaten in at least 3 years! Our group ordered the Lewis & Clark & Underboss sandwiches and the Three Sisters salad. All original recipes, and super tasty. The bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Meats, cheeses, and veggie toppings are shaved thin. Arugula! And unique sauces like fig jam and horseradish cream. Candied walnuts on the salad! Comfortable atmosphere. Service was slow, but it gave us time to chat and the food was definitely worth the wait. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
this food blew my mind!! omg, the food is amazing and the wine was delicious. new regular stop for me going to/from seattle.

Yelp
This post is way over due. Fuel is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. All of their sandwiches and salads are delicious. They use fresh ingredients and food is always very consistent. I love their grilled cheese with fig jam and bacon, comes with a creamy tomato soup and pesto drizzle (YUM). They have a great wine selection and half off bottles Mon-Wed! Beer on tap too! Service is always on point, Brandon is so attentive, professional and friendly. The staff always goes above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect! We love Fuel!!!

Tammy R.

Yelp
Friendly staff , food is really good especially if Brandon is cooking ! Love the menu and the Daily specials . Clean place and relaxing . They do have outdoor seating for warm weather .

Barry B.

Yelp
Food and service were both so good. My wife and I both tried the vegetable beef soup made with beer? So good! If it's on special, don't hesitate, just say yes please.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy Ridgefield has this little gem of a restaurant! The sandwiches are amazing. Service is great and so is the ambiance of the Fuel Bistro. I walked in and was greeted right away, the specials were explained to us so I went with the turkey with swiss and a cup of their mushroom soup - SO GOOD. The sandwich came with bacon fig jam, because I don't eat post the waitress suggested I do the pesto aioli - amazing!! I went with my father who informed me every soup he's ever tried from there - even the strange sounding soups were amazing. After moving out of ridgefield years ago I rarely come by long enough to stop to eat, I started taking riding lessons in the area and my mom still lives near by so I know I will be back soon! I have been telling literally everyone about this place since I went this afternoon.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Great food. Yummy wine! Fun space the person waiting on us was kind and courteous to everyone. Vibe is industrial chic!!! Highly recommend finding this place just off of I-5.
google avatar

Carrie C.

Yelp
A surprise at a strip mall! Atmosphere was cozy and my soup and salad were delicious. Pleasant staff.
google avatar

Rick B.

Yelp
We had the Three Sisters Salad and the Club sandwich prepared as a salad with lettuce instead of bread. Both were excellent with good quality fresh green lettuce not iceberg! Really good with balsamic dressing
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Super tasty sandwich! I got the turkey avocado club and it was awesome. It was also a big portion! The pickle was so spicy and vinegary and delicious. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

D L.

Yelp
Service was acceptable. Limited to a good selection of sandwiches, soup, and salads. Wasn't noisy so one can talk. Food was hit and miss. Gunmelt sandwich was a strange spicy/sweet, greasy sandwich. Caesar salad had tasteless dressing. Monte Cristo sandwich was good. Tomato Basil bisque soup was also good. Prices were in-line.

Norm B.

Yelp
Creative and fresh sandwiches and salads. Sneaky fun and sweet Elk Chili ! Lots of smiles and greetings that last all day ! Check it out and get "fuel" !

karla o.

Yelp
My daughter and her husband suggested that we go here for dinner tonight. OMG!!! Everything was amazing. My daughter and I shared a pretzel with cheese and it was delicious!!! We also shared the Gunman Melt sandwich. It was definitely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The bistro salad was perfect also! He ordered the Underboss sandwich and he loved it. The wine i ordered from Isenhower winery was one of the best wines I've ever had!! Service was great. Our only problem with the meal was that it was hard to choose what to order because so many items looked good. We decided we just need to come back again. And again...

Anita B.

Yelp
First time visitor last night and was very impressed! Highly recommend and will be going back

Rebecca B.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this amazing place right in our own backyard! Their menu is exciting, with new dishes and specials weekly, if not daily, as well as their standard soup, salad, and sandwich menu with great appetizer selections. The words the immediately leap to mind are GOURMET, UNIQUE, FRESH, FLAVOR, CREATIVE, AMAZING, and MORE PLEASE!!! Their breads are fresh, varied, and tasty, their appetizers are wonderful, and the sandwich selection has something for everyone with creative twists that take them to the next level! The soups are delightful and complement the salads and sandwiches perfectly! (soup flights offered on Sundays only) Again, the creativity, freshness, and preparation are gourmet level. They also have daily specials that can range from specialty burgers to unique pastas and flatbread pizzas, so their menu is NEVER BORING! Service is OUTSTANDING and the value is off the charts as the food is superb and worth the trip from anywhere in the region just to eat here! This WILL be your new favorite Bistro!!! *(Bonus tip: you can purchase jars of their wonderful spicy bacon jam in the restaurant! It's sooo good!)
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
Best sandwiches I've ever eaten in my entire life. If I could make food like this at home I'd never leave my house.
google avatar

Heidi B.

Yelp
We loved it here until they changed ownership and apparently the chef changed. The food is just mediocre now, sadly.
google avatar

Adriana L.

Yelp
I love comimg here. I had what king of sandwich I wanted in my mind beforehand (not your mommas club). When we arrived, the waitress suggested the special, shrimp risotto. I was hesitant about deviating from my plan, but I am so glad I did. It was delicious !!! On mondays they have 50% off on wine bottles!
google avatar

Jordan H.

Yelp
The prime rib sandwich ( believe it was the gun melt) and ceaser salad were very good. My girlfriend's Monte cristo wasn't bad either
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
The food here is actually pretty good. Prices are almost on the verge of asking too much. The wooden slabs that the food comes on is definitely unique but a little overwhelming. Bistros and cafes are supposed to use standard, neutral plates. Was here a few days ago and our waitress definitely didn't wash our menus after taking them from the table and then gave them to another party that came in. We also saw a member of the kitchen staff walking around with a large loaf of bread in his hand without wearing gloves. Our waitress also suggested to us that if we didn't like the pre-bagged chips that came with our sandwiches, to swap it out with another from their chip rack ourselves which is *super* gross and unsanitary in these COVID times. If this place were to improve anything, I'd start with painting the walls a lighter, off-white color with French vineyard accents. The walls are currently painted a deep red and black, making the interior of the bistro feel very small and dark. I'd also get rid of some of the tacky, unnecessary Americana decor on the walls. This is supposed to be a bistro, not Applebee's.
